from nbc bay area, this is "today in the bay." well good morning everyone, it's 4:30e in the morning, i'm scott mcgrew. >> and i'm kris sanchez, laura garcia-cannon is off this morning. lots to get to, first let's check your forecast with christina loren. >> hey, good morning, chris, scott, everybody at home. another interesting day in the weather department. we have a better chance for some showers as we get into this afternoon. right now temperatures mostly in the 50s and 60s on our way towards the 70s and 80s. 83 for the south bay. 79 through the peninsula. five to ten degrees cooler than yesterday. the cooling trend begins and it'll ramp up through the weekend. right now here's mike and your

drive. >> good morning christina. good number of headlights, this is northbound 101 in san jose. it's looking good, it is a traffic tuesday, but over the summer months, that means there's no school, that's what we see, lighter volume. looks towards the rest of the south bay, construction is over here. cleared from 280 at 17, and that was about a half hour ago since that's cleared. northbound 87 at taylor, we have reports of a new crash there. there's an ambulance heading to the scene because the single car hit something in the center divide. possibly in the fast lane, stay over to the right. there's slowing on the sensors, that's about it for the south bay and the rest of your way bay. we're talking about construction over by the maze and something going on highway 13, for now back to you. >> thank you. new this morning, san francisco police investigating reports of an overnight home invasion robbery. police at the scene say it appears the suspects broke into the home by carrying off the

mail -- tearing off the mail slot on the door. the home near the corner of hartford and 19th street in the city's castro. no word if anyone was inside the home at the time or what was stolen. also new this morning, part of a bay area college campus taped off overnight so police could investigate a stabbing. it happened on the university of san francisco campus near golden gate avenue. campus police are not saying much about that late night stabbing yet, but a spokesperson did confirm that the victim is not a student. we don't yesterday know who that person is or what that person's condition is this morning. it is also unclear whether police took anyone into custody or what led to the stabbing. for the second straight day, administrators plan a -- demonstrators plan a protest. the group will picket outside the da's office this afternoon. 13-year-old andy lopez was carrying a replica rifle in a

santa rosa park in october when he was shot. the deputies shot lopez because he honestly believed the gun was a real ak-47 and in that moment, deadly force was testified. lopez was warned by an adult friend not to carry the replica. parents are still worried for the safety of their children. >> i have kids and i have teenager boys, you know, something needs to stop this. >> some said they wanted to see the deputy in jail. meanwhile the lopez family plans to file a lawsuit against the deputy and the county. today the san diego board of supervisors will vote on a law that could change mental health care in the city. laura's law would allow friends, family, doctors, or law enforcement officials to ask the court to force mentally ill people to get outpatient treatment in certain situations. potential patients must have

hospitalized or jailed for mental health issues twice in the last three years and have been violent toward themselves or others. the law was actually passed statewide back in 2002, but counties have been slow to opt in so far only a few have. the supervisors will honor airport plea employees who helped to rescue children from the wreckage of the asiana airlines crash last year. sunday marked one year since the plane crashed. within two minutes of the crash landing, several airport ploeps were on scene helping people from the wreckage. three teenage passengers were killed, another 187 were hurt. well new this morning, a classic who done it in the south bay, complete with a crime caught on camera and a criminal with a clever moniker. look at this video posted on the facebook page. in it you can see a woman right there bearing -- wearing bright yellow pants steal a sign from

the front yard in san jose. videos made the rounds on the internet. some have called the thief the banana hand bandit. >> that's illegal. >> it's very illegal. and there she goes. banana pants. >> don't wear yellow pants if you're going to do something wrong. the owner of a. to rated south bay restaurant that caught fire yesterday plans to rebuild and reopen. the michelin rated restaurant menresa caught fire earlier yesterday morning, we brought it live as it happened as breaking news. the fire caused about $300,000 worth of damage, mostly to the roof and the outside of the building. but the inside was damaged by smoke and water, and so the carpet and the linens will all have to be replaced. the fire started outside, it is still unclear exactly how. it is expected to be months before that restaurant reopens. firefighters in the north bay face another day of 100 plus temperatures and hot, blustery

wind as they work to surround the fire that's been burning since the fourth of july. the fire is burning southeast of lake baressa in yolo county. sofa no evacuations, but firefighters say 40 homes may be in the way. the fires burned nearly 6500 acres in less than a week. it is only 45% contained. happening now, powerful typhoon is forcing people across the islands in japan to seek refuge. right now wind gusts topping 150 miles an hour whipping up waves as high as 50 feet. hundreds of thousands of people living near the shoreline are evacuating the higher ground and the airports are shut down. one man missing, the storm is expected to hit the main city in just a few hours. forecasters say the typhoon which was downgraded from a supertyphoon is one of the strongest storms to ever hit japan. more than, most rather of the 50,000 u.s. troops in japan are

subtropical moisture hit the bay area and it's going to stick around for the next couple days. as we're still seeing that wrap around moisture come into this area, i think high pressure's going to keep it right where it is all the way through thursday, potentially. 83 degrees, sun and clouds for the south bay today, 79 along the peninsula, about 65 degrees, that's the only place you're really going to get a significant ocean breeze. in san francisco and right around the inner bay. and that's going to mean pleasant conditions today. 68 degrees and 88 in the tri-valley. let me take you through the weather headlines, preview of what's coming your way. cooler temperatures for today by five to ten degrees. better shower chance today than yesterday, and. ramps up even more so for tomorrow, then we're going to cool you off into the weekend. i'll show you your extended forecast, kind of a roller coaster weather ride to go on, that's in my next report. right now let's welcome in mike inouye, break for commuters because school's out for summer. yeah, it's probably going to continue for a few more days,

new in this morning, at least 16 people, four nato soldiers were killed in a suicide blast in afghanistan. this happened near clinic in the eastern part of the country. the czech ministry of defense says the four dead soldiers were from the czech republic. another soldier was badly wounded. two afghan police officers and at least ten civilians were also killed. the taliban is claiming responsibility for this attack. now to a developing story and people in the gaza strip are surrounded by flattened homes and destruction this morning following dozens of israeli air strikes overnight. the israeli army says operation protective edge struck 50 sites. hamas ruled gaza strips. the strikes are in response to a

barrage of rocket attacks against israel. there's also word that the military is mobilizing for a ground invasion as well. the tensions stems from the killings of three israeli teenagers followed by what appeared to be the revenge killing of a palestinian teenager. formal request from the president comes today. $2 billion to deal with the growing immigration crisis at the border. the president wants the money to spend on immigration judges and detention facilities to house an influx of thousands of immigrant women and children crosses into the united states. the president is headed to texas tomorrow, not expected though to visit the border. >> president obama evidently needs a wake-up call. and visiting the border and learning firsthand about the severity and causes of this ongoing crisis will be that wake-up that call. >> we have to take care of the children. we can't leave them in a

circumstance where they're not fed or taken care of or in safe conditions and we'll have to find some money, i guess, to do that. >> the united nations wants migrants to be given refugee status and protection. ford is recalling nearly 100,000 cars this morning. for that and the news, let's turn to martha counce, good morning. >> reporter: stocks fell on monday, investors taking profit on the back of the holiday weekend. retreating from all time highs. investors are weighing the start of earning season which starts tonight when the reports and whether the federal reserve may hike interest rates sooner than expected given the strong data on jobs. we're going to give data on consumer credit. it starts at 17,024 after falling 44 points, nasdaq at 44.51 after losing 34. and ford is recalling about

92,000 vehicles in north america including the 2013 and 2014 taurus. new york times reports a problem with the drive shaft could loss a driving function. but ford says its has h no injuries or accidents reported in association with it, scott. >> thank you. and now let's get a look at our microclimate forecast with christina loren. you see still a little warm today. >> little warm, little muggy. >> you know we like it dry around here in the bay area, we're dealing with that really intense heat yesterday. we got close to triple digits and definitely had to add that hidden humidity too. the equation, basically you get a feels like temperature that is much warmer than the true temperature. right now we have plenty of 60s out there, it actually feels like 70 degrees in livermore with that additional moisture coming in. so, let's talk about that, shall we? something that you don't traditionally see at this time of the morning j in july. we have showers that just

developed with on our radar. take a look at this, up in loren county where the clouds are so heavy, we're getting the wrap around moisture, actually a little bit of shower activity, use your windshield wipers for a minute or two. and a lot is verga, it evaporates before it huts the surface. really they're getting the activity in the southwest desert, yeah, in las vegas today they could see flash flooding from the same system that's bringing these very light little cells our way. for today, you're going to see a sky that looks like this, reminiscent of florida. added humidity for today. 80s in the north bay. 75 for the east shore, 83 in the south bay, and 79 degrees for today on the peninsula. so definitely stealing even warmer than the true temperature with that sticky,icy air mass overhead. the good news is as we get into late thursday and friday, hopefully we'll see an area of low pressure that comes through, knocks the high ridge of pressure out of here and that'll bring in drier air and cooler

temperatures. nice finish to the week. we're going to keep tabs on that for you. tricky forecast when you're dealing with the monsoonal moisture, back to you, scott and crash. >> thank you much. fish banned in a popular southern california beach following the great white shark attack we've been telling you about. a young great white bit a swimmer on the chest off manhattan beach. a fisherman hooked the shark, as the shark was trying to free itself from the line, that's when it latched on to this man. state officials, fish and wildlife officials studying that attack and potential threats to swimmers. all fishing at manhattan beach banned, at least for the next two months. a popular roller coaster at six flags, magic mountain in southern california will be closed for at least the day so that inspectors can look for damage. four people were hurt when the ninja coaster hit a tree branch and got stuck on the tracks with 22 people on board. at least one of the cars partially derailed. this all happened yesterday at the park in valencia.

it took crews about three hours to get the passengers down. luckily, no one suffered serious injuries. washington state is just hours away from open og its first marijuana shops with hundreds of people waiting in line since yesterday. high prices and shortages are expected. its been more than a year and half voters approved to legalize the sale of marijuana there. washington is the second state to legalize pot following colorado which did that earlier this year. the defense has rested in the oscar pistorius trial, closing arguments won't come until next month, court adjourned until august 7th. in the courtroom, pistorius's lawyer asked the court to keep in mind the defense was unable to call a number of witnesses because they refuse to have their testimony broadcast. prosecutors say pistorius shot and killed his girlfriend, reeva steenkamp on purpose after a fight last year. pistorius says he shot steenkamp by miss take, thinking she was an intruder in his home. disgraced los angeles

clippers owner donald sterling is expected to testify in court today about the $2 billion steal of his former team. a judge ordered sterling to appear in court this afternoon after he was nowhere to be found during the opening of the day trial yesterday. instead the first testimony came from a nooulgs who concluded sterling had alzheimer's disease. sterling's estranged wife made a deal to sell the clippers to steve balmer, the former ceo of microsoft. she came claims her husband was unable to act as administrator of the trust which officially owns the team. donald sterling was ousted by the nba for making racist remarks while he was being secretly recorded. live look at 4:51 at o.co. battle of bay round two tonight. last night it best team in baseball, the a's blaenged the giants 5-0. making it no doubt they are the best. everything going right for the a's on the field. off field, much different story. late last night the oakland city

council met booibd closed doors trying to figure out if the next move regarding the team's ten-year lease extension. the deal approved by the coliseum authority last week, but the city and the alameda county board of supervisors still needs to sign off on it. the city wants toucher financial terms. city councilman larry reid says he believes the a's will move to month teal or san antonio or somewhere else if the deal's shot down. last week major league baseball told the a's they can move immediately if the authority voted against the lease agreement. >> month teal, san antonio, san jose, that's a possibility, or no? >> probably not. it's hard to say with mlb and the rights, but definitely a city that doesn't have the a baseball team. >> all right, stay tuned. still ahead, kick starter campaign raises more than $35,000 all because of bun man's request for potato salad. that story coming up. wow, i'd like fries with that. looking over here, nice easy drive, low clouds not affecting
