we want to get to the top stories. the investigation into that deadly shooting rampage overnight in texas as one young victim who survived fights for her life this morning. nbc's miguel almaguer is at the scene for us. good morning to you. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. heart breaking this upscale and quiet community outside of houston testimony lone gunman has been ieflded as 33 ron lee haskel. he is behind bars. his rampage ended with help from the lone survivor, a 15-year-old girl he left for dead. a sweltering summer afternoon shattered by violence. a shooting spree at a home on leaf flat lane. the victims ranging in age from 4 to 39-years-old. >> it breaks my heart. i have been here 37 years him nothing like this has ever happened. >> reporter: police say the male suspect, who was going through a divorce, opened fire at the home of his siblings, five of the victims were pronounced dead at

the scene and one child died after being airlifted to a hospital. the lone survivor, a 15-year-old girl who was shot in the head managed to help police. >> she was coherent enough to tell us who did it, what he was driving and a street name of where the rest of the family lived. it was our understanding he was going to that location to kill more people there. >> reporter: police intercepted the suspect. this cell phone shows the dramatic 30-minute car chase. finally, he was cornered four miles from the crime scene. >> i guess he was looking for a way out of the neighborhood or something, he went straight for that cul-de-sac. they trapped him in there. >> reporter: over the next three hours, police tried to get the suspect to surrender. they even used two armed vehicles to sandwich his car cutting off 18 chance of escape. he gave up after sun down at the end of a dark day in spring

texas. the suspect had a court date today. he did not appear in court, though. there has been no motive for the shootingful as for that 15-year-old girl, she is still in critical condition. >> miguel, thank you so much. the immigration crisis remains center stage today as president obama wraps up a quick trip to texas. the president defending his administration's policy and pushing back against contradiction after meeting with texas governor rick perry. nbc national correspondent peter alexander is in austin, texas. good morning. >> reporter: willie, good morning to you. at the end of that meeting, both men agreed that the crisis needs to be ended quickly. president obama is in austin. he will be giving a speech not on immigration but on the economy and one of his critics rick perry is at the border telling me there is an open invitation to join him to see

what he calls a powerful display of a human crisis. arriving in austin overnight, president obama still close but still so far away from the southern border. late wednesday the president rejected criticism for not visiting the border, insisting he is well aware of what's happening there. >> this isn't theater. this is a problem. i'm not interested in photo ops. i'm interested in solving a problem. >> reporter: those followed a highly anticipated meeting with governor rick perry with a round table with local leaders. afterward the president said he was opened to perry's suggestions about how to handle the crisis, he would consider putting national guard troops there and urged coming to buy in on his call this week for nearly $4 become in emergency spending. . >> the challenge is, is congress prepared to act to put theory resources in place to get this

his fifth trip to savannah since september. >> that story breaking just today, reports of a major cyber attack targeting the u.s. government. there are reports this morning chinese hackers broke into the computer network that houdzs the personal information of all federal employees. let's get to nbc justice correspondent pete williams. he has the latest on this. good morning, pete, what is this all about? >> good morning. american officials say this happened in mid-march. an intruths into the federal government's office of personnel management. they say they were going after data of federal employees with high level security clearances, it contains financial information, job history and perhaps most interest any foreign contact itself. the files are used to conduct background investigations. government officials stay intrusion appeared to come from china. word of the hack attack first report bid the new york times comes as secretary of state john kerry is in beijing for an annual meeting with chinese on

and hamas. this is day three of the heaviest fighting in years. neither side appears ready to back down. israel continues to conduct airstrikes early this morning. palestinian officials say seven people were killed, including five children when a strike destroyed their home. so far, more than 3750 targets have been hit this week. lightning triggered a fire at a maryland middle school. it happened early wednesday night when adult education classes were going on. half that building was destroyed. fortunately, no one was hurt. a powerful and deadly mudslide caught on camera. take a look at this, a cascade of water, mud, trees, comes barreling down. >> that has swollen two nearby homes. one of the young boys died. three-and-a-half inches of rain fell in the area in just one hour. donald sterlings legal battle to prevent the sale of the los angeles clippers is

and storms down in the southwest. we do have flash flood watches in effect, especially around the four corners because when those downpours develop, they could flood out pretty quickly. high pressure is in control right through the great lakes. it will keep it really nice across the northeast as well. we will see temperatures in the 70s and lower '80s. here are those two slight risks, north dakota and south dakota and into north central nebraska. we could see large hail. yesterday in nebraska, we had baseball size hail. that's a look at the weather across the country. your local forecast is coming up in just 30 seconds.

you're watching "today in the bay." a very good morning to you, it is 7:26 i'm laura garcia-cannon. crews just put out a fire near the golf course in san jose. broke out about 6:00 this morning. you can see the smoke in the distance from one of the san jose cameras. investigators say the 50 by 50 foot fire broke out in a creek bed. this is the third fire in that area in the past few weeks. investigators are looking into the cause but people say there have been other incidents including propane explosions inside the woods near there. today dozen of pot shops are banning together to protest come next friday more than 70 cannabis clubs will be forced to shut down due to new city restrictions. those clubs will gather in front of san jose city hall to fight

i got out on a kayak, go close to the glacier, got inside in one of the ice caves under the glacier. i flew out on a helicopter over the glacier. guys, i even climbed the glacier if you can believe it. it's pretty amazing. beyond this impressive sight, there is so much to see and do here, among the many natural wonders, of course, the beauty of the wildlife here. i have seen everything from bald eagles -- it was like a bald eagle convention here in juneau yesterday, i've got to tell you. to the beautiful grizzly bears that inhabit the creek and the coastline here in alaska. i can't way to show you my "today takes off" adventure starting off in juneau alaska coming up in a little bit, right guys? >> doesn't it look good. she's wearing her coat. it's clammy hand season here.

we'll check in with you in a little bit. an arrest made in connection with a bizarre case in california, the mysterious death of a google executive. his body was found on his yacht last november. now a young woman is behind bars. here is nbc's mike taibbi. >> reporter: a first court appearance for 26-year-old alix tichelman. >> felony, manslaughter. >> reporter: forest hayes was a 51-year-old google executive and married father of five who police say met tichelman online and hooked up several times on his boat in the santa cruz marina. before google, hayes had been an engineer at apple. he was found dead last november 23rd and police say the yacht's surveillance video showed tichelman injecting hayes and casually cleaning up after he collapsed. >> she steps over the body, reaches over to the table and

all gone. >> reporter: police say tichelman admitted she's a long-time heroin user and prostitute, now an accused killer as well. formal arraignment next week. for "today" mike taibbi, los angeles. >> your wife breaks for his wife and kids. let's get a check of the weather from dylan. even though we haven't had a lot of rain in the midwest, we are still looking at a risk of flooding. a lot of the rivers are still in major flood stage. you can see these diamonds here, the red ones indicate major flooding. i want to point out st. louis where we're not seeing a whole lot of flooding right now. watch what happens as we go through the next couple of days. minor flood stage begins at around 29 feet. you can see by the time we get to this weekend, we should be up around 31 feet, just indicating that the river is going to start overflowing its banks before it starts to recede by the time we get into the middle of next week. we are looking at additional rainfall and any rain is going to make matters worse right through iowa, especially over

you're watching "today in the bay" in the. good morning everyone, 7:56 i'm scott mcgrew. l.a. dodgers attorneys floon appeal the verdict in the civil case surrounding bryan stow. after four weeks of testimony, nine days of deliberations, the jury decided the l.a. dodgers share responsibility for stow's injuries along with his attackers. they were convicted of assault earlier this year. the jury decided the dodgers should pay men and women $15 million. 13.7 for economic loss since stow will never be able to work again and will need constant care. another for pain and suffering. former team owner frank mccourt was not part of that jury decision. stow beaten in the parking lot of dodgers stadium three years ago now. well let's check your weather with christina. >> hey good morning, scott, good morning at home, we have some of the midlevel clouds here in san jose, mostly clear at this hour.

spring, texas. miguel, good morning. >> reporter: craig, good morning. we've learned many new details about this tragic shooting outside in this quiet suburb just outside of houston. we have, as you mentioned, the suspect's name, ron lee haskell, he'll have his first court date later on this morning. the 33-year-old is accused of killing six people including four children. police say he entered the home of a relative here in spring late yesterday and shot two adults and four children execution style. the lone survivor, a 15-year-old girl called police and warned haskell was on his way to a nearby home to kill more people. police intercepted him, that sparked a three-hour standoff leading to haskell later turning himself in. at this hour place say they have no motive in this shooting. the 15-year-old girl remains in critical condition. craig? >> miguel almaguer in texas, thank you.

homeland security chief jeh johnson takes the president's request for more funding before congress. the administration wants nearly $4 billion to stop, detain and process mostly underage immigrants from central america who have been flooding across the border with mexico. meanwhile, president obama is in texas where he met face-to-face wednesday with republican governor rick perry who has been blaming him for fail failing to secure the border. president obama said later he would consider deploying national guard troops to help. u.s. officials say they do not know if china's government was behind a major breach of federal computer networks. they say chinese hackers in march broke into personnel files apparently snooping on employees who applied for top secret security clearance. in beijing today, secretary of state john kerry said he had a frank discussion about hacking with chinese officials this week and he made mention of that new report. florida fish and wildlife officials say they now have proof that an orlando area man has been illegally feeding bears. they say this photo, that one

outside juneau. you're out of your mind up there. what's going on? >> i am out of my mind. it's been an extraordinary jam packed, action packed two days right outside here in juneau and mendenhall glacier. that glacier, i think you saw. you can't appreciate the beauty and how spectacular it is until you're up close or even on top of it. as you saw, i actually was able to climb some of it which was the scariest thing i think i have ever done. i tried a lot of things, but that was about the scariest. it has been an incredible trip here. there is so much to see and do, am hong the many natural wonders here as well, the extraordinary wildlife. coming up in just little bit, i saw everything from bald eagles to grizzly bears. we went to an area called pat creek. it is amazing the amount of wildlife there, and the grizzlies, we get pretty up-close. you'll see it in a little bit. meanwhile this great crowd from

a very good morning to you. it is 9:26 now. i'm laura garcia-cannon. defense attorneys say they plan to appeal the verdict in the civil case surrounding injured giants fan, bryan stow. after four weeks of testimony and nine days of deliberations, the jury decided the los angeles dodgers share responsibility for stow's injuries along with his attackers, louis sanchez, and marvin norwood. they were convicted of assault earlier this year. the jury decided the dodgers should pay stow nearly $15 million, $13.7 of that for economic losses and stow will never be able to work again. and another $1 million for pain and suffering. former team owner, frank mccourt, was not part of the jury decision. stow was brutally beaten in the parking lot of dodgers' stadium three years ago.

today, a crucial vote in richmond could give the chevron refinery a $1 billion facelift. last night, dozens made their feelings known at the city's planning commission meeting. some neighbors say they do not trust chevron to conduct clean and safe projects. the planning commission is going to decide whether to certify an environmental cleaning report tonight. if approved, it would allow chevron to move forward with renovation. we'll have a look at weather and traffic, a big mess on highway 17, after the break.
