7:02 am
cleanup of some of the crazy storms we had in virginia beach yesterday. it pretty much encompassed a five-block radius. we had wind gusts near 70 miles per hour. this happened around 3:30 yesterday afternoon. we saw 2 to 3 inches of rain in just an hour's period of time. and we also had reports of a tornado, although it hasn't been confirmed. there's a possible tornado but you can see from the damage with the treetops taken off there it was possible to be a tornado. on the flip side of that, out in washington state, about 250 firefighters are battling this blaze which is 0% contained. it has grown now to 18,000 acres. this is about two hours east of seattle in mills county. and we are looking at this to be a major concern because the heat is so intense out in that part of the country. temperatures are running about 10 to 15 degrees above average. and the brush is dry. there hasn't been any rain there for a long period of time. that is going to help fuel these fires.
7:03 am
we have excessive heat watches in effect saturday at 11:00 a.m. to sunday 7:00 p.m. throughout the entire weekend right in through here is where we'll see the temperatures 15 degrees above average. and the fire is up through here. it's one of several fires that are occurring in washington state right now. as we go through the weekend, 20 degrees above average in seattle. so it's that heat that is certainly going to make matters worse for the firefighters. and on the flip side of that-- that's three flip sides. on the flip side of that, we are actually talking about a polar vortex. a summer version of the polar vortex. >> thank you, dylan. i can't tell you how much i've missed saying polar vortex. thank you. >> dylan, than. we're learning more this morning about that tragic shooting in the houston suburbs that left six people dead including four children. and the teenager who survived is now being hailed as a hero. nbc's miguel almaguer has the latest on the investigation. miguel, good morning. >> reporter: willie, good morning. 33-year-old ron lee haskell will
