morning. you're looking at a live picture of san jose. rob, it looked a little bit overcast. we can expect a warmup. >> we'll get clearing skies. right now high pressure is squeezing down. low clouds this morning. we have misty skies across the golden gate bridge. here's a look at the low clouds in san francisco over to oakland. and into the tri-valley. and so this morning, everybody more or less seeing the same picture outside. mostly cloudy skies with the drizzle. then clouds on the coast and valley temperatures. climbing to the 80s and low 90s closer to the tri-valley. to numbers in the 80s in san jose. 58 in san francisco with patchy, low clouds coming up. we're talking temperatures in the upper 90s for a few spots tomorrow. we'll talk about that and other

changes in your sunday forecast in a few minutes. >> thank you so much, rob. well, this morning palo alto police are beefing up patrols at city parks. she managed to escape the suspect. when she tried calling 911 on her cell phone, she couldn't get through. the attack happened friday at 11:30 in the morning. this is not far from campus. police say a man approached the woman in the small neighborhood park and started talking to her. he then suddenly made aggressive advances towards the woman, fondling her and pinning her down as he tried to kiss her. she was able to shove him off, but when she tried calling 911 on her cell phone, the woman could not get a signal. she called police as soon as she could. neighbors who frequent the park say they are stunned by the attack but do often have trouble getting cell service in the area. >> i have to come out of my house and go across the road

sometimes to make calls. my calls cut in and out all the time. coverage is extremely bad. >> i've never heard of anything like that happening before. and it's a very safe neighborhood. i'm surprised anyone would try that. >> no question it's unsettling for the folks. the suspect is a middle eastern man between 45 and 55 years old. 5'3", 170 pounds with short, salt and pepper hair. on the run for six years, but now in custody, he is wanted on suspicion of child molestation charges in the midwest. detectives were checking vehicle registration papers when he realized they gave him a fake name and birth date. he was wanted on 2008 warrant from green bay, wis. he is now awaiting extradition

to wisconsin. yesterday protesters in the north bay blocked part of a busy bay roadway freeway. the group marched on highway 101 near the 3rd street exit in santa rosa where they were met by police in riot gear. pd briefly closed down the onramp until the protesters headed back to where the earlier protests had begun. the deputy shot lopez because he believed the pellet gun the boy was carrying was an ak-47. he is suing sonoma county and the deputy. a wildfire that threatened homes last night in contra costa county is now fully contained. this happened after a car struck o utility pole. about half a dozen homes were

evacuated. 80 acres burned in the fire. firefighters remained on the scene looking for hot spots. well, they took to the field one last time. and the greats pulled out the win. it was billed as the legends. and thousands of fans came out to say good-bye to the hall of famers and the historic stadium. christie smith spoke with the fan who is were feeling a bit nostalgic. >> reporter: when joe montana ran out onto the field, it was like old times at candle stick. ray watched his career from the start. >> it's fun to see him play. he still has the arm. he sfil has the voice. he'll always be joe montana. alongside greats like jerry rice, who scored quickly, just as fans expected. he's still got it.

30,000 of the faithful fans came to see the legends of candle stick. flag football with the enthusiasm of an nfl game, called the last football game to be played at the old stadium. former players said it was bittersweet. >> i love this place. when the winds start coming and the weather really got cold, all the guys who came here to play, and i'm like, guys, this is home for me. >> reporter: and for the fans it was a chance to thank the greats on the field for so many wins here. are you going to miss it? >> oh, yeah. i come to a lot of games here. >> christie smith, today in the bay. >> as for who actually won that game, in true candle stick park fashion, a dratmatic ending. joe montana rolls to his rice

and finds not jerry rice or dwight clark, but eddie bartolo for the game winning touchdown. joe cool said it was all by design. >> it was a fun time. i think everybody had fun. we had a plan at the end, but we didn't think it would work out. it's so fun. >> it's funny to think about for a minute. my kids can see it. this is where i did it. >> those guys are still recovering today in the ice baths. more details now. candle stick park has been the place for countless memories. here's a few that stand out. who can forget the cash zm dwight clark snares a game winning touchdown from joe

montana, leading the 49ers to the first super bowl victory. in october 17th, 1989. an earthquake struck san francisco just minutes before game three of the world series began. that lasted 15 seconds. and the beatles gave their final concert back in august of 1966. so many memory ps. they will not be forgotten. counting down to kickoff at the 49ers new home. six light rail stations are closed as santa clara county prepares to open up a new football stadium. that includes the great american station. bta is expanding the track through the corridor to try to handle the rush of fans to dom. shuttle buses are covering that parts of the line. regular service will resume on monday. coming up in a few minutes, we'll take you to levi stadium to get a preview of what's going on the menu.

later in the day. now israel continues its aerial assault in gaza, ignoring international appeals for a cease fire. now according to palestinian forces, israeli air strikes targeted gaza police headquarters and a branch in the city. gaza police headquarters completely demolished, and hours after the attack, fire was still burning in the rubble of the building. israel has carried out more than 1,200 air strikes to try to diminish hamas' abilities to fire rockets. that's a militant group that controlled gaza and said it would not be the first to cease fire. thousands of people turned out in san francisco to call for the end of israeli attacks. back home now. california may be the first

state to regulate pet insurance. a new bill would set clear guidelines for an industry that has no regulations. the state department of insurance has a spiking complaint about confusing or misleading pet insurance policies. assembly members approved the legislation unanimously. it is now awaiting senate approval. studies show only 1% of all consumers hold policies for their pets. much more ahead on "today in the bay." coming up next, a beer and a hot dog will still be a game day staple at levi stadium. wait until you see what else is in store for 49ers fans. could it be garlic fries? who knows what's in the works. we go on a guided tour. and we're seeing cloudy skies across the bay area, including san jose, with drizzle for your sunday morning. heat shields are compromised. we have multiple failures.

a bit of a hazy day right now to kick off your sunday morning. it's 7:15. a live picture of levi stadium. in less than a month @ 49 erz will have their first preseason game. levi stadium will hope in less than ap month. they say it will be cutting j. surely you care about the technological bells and whistles. scott budman got an early test of the new cuisine. >> that looks amazing. >> reporter: with just prepared lam curry and freshly cut fruit, willy wonka decided to get into the catering business and opened up shop inside levi stadium. >> and this is our main kitchen.

restaurant. scott budman, today in the bay. >> first game is going to be august 17th against the denver broncos. we are all excited. >> coming up quickly. >> your outdoor experience could really run the gam et from drizzly to hot. >> is right now all across the bay area, waking up to low clouds and misty skies. dublin seeing mist as well. ch 59 in san jose. 58 around the east bay. san francisco at 56 degrees. in the afternoon valley temperatures will start to heat on up. if you're going to head out to the giants game, should see temperatures in the upper 60s. but misty skies through lunchtime. and partly cloudy skies in the afternoon. the sea breeze will be ha little less strong for places inland.

that will weaken as the high pressure builds up. despite misty skies and a lot of fog in the bay area, not just in typical spots like san francisco and the north bay, but spreading to livermore and patches of low clouds closer to san jose. so in the afternoon, some of the preview of our temperatures, san jose climbing to the low 80s after the clouds break up. another location closer to 90. but look at those skies this morning. a lot of low clouds for the moment. another thing to watch out for more so tomorrow and tuesday is a slight chance of seeing summer showers coming to the coastal mountains. for this morning, it's all about the low clouds and drizzle. in the afternoon as the high pressure strengthens, that's going to boost the valley temperatures. 80s to low 90s in the forecast for the afternoon. and monday we have a high center

to the north. and the flow around it clock wise starting to pull up the moisture in the southwest. that will bring a slight chance of seeing thundershowers for the sierra. kind of like we had last week. monday you're seeing high clouds drifting on by. another wave of moisture for tuesday. so partly cloudy skies on tuesday. and then we'll see a stronger sea breeze that will bring the temperatures down. so today and tomorrow especially tomorrow, temperatures climbing up. monday, the warmest day of the week with value lie highs making a run at the mid to upper 90s around the tri-valley for tomorrow. today it looks pleasant. upper 60s closer to san francisco. and the numbers are starting to creep up.

downtown cooling quickly towards the middle part of the week and the the north y. afternoon we'll see temperatures eventually getting to the 80s after the low clouds break up. 87 in napa. pleasanton and livermore, closer to 90 today. temperatures mid 90s. upper 90s in a few spots. we get a few extra high clouds. perhaps not quite as warm there. right now tomorrow looks like the warmest day of the week. and temperatures cooling down approaching wednesday. that means low clouds and ocean air-conditioning towards wednesday and thursday. >> ocean air-conditioning. you can't beat that. coming up next, heroism in the bay area as one man redefines walking with a purpose. the incredible trek he's making to make awareness for the disease that took his mother's life.

a marin county man doing what he can to turn personal loss to public goods. it involves a former colleague of ours. ultimately he wants to help find a cure for ovarian cancer. but like any long journey, it has to begin with a single step. garvin thomas that has this morning's bay area proud. >> there is something about the rugged beauty of a place like this that makes it the perfect spot to be alone with your thoughts. john woody has been coming here a lot lately to do just that. alone, but not by himself. >> you actually do feel, you know, some sort of presence when you're around these areas. >> the presence is that of his

mother, karen. karen loved to hike the trails and woody loved to go with her. >> she was really a great person that instilled these values of having a good time and enjoying the moment. >> it was, though, exactly one day after enjoying one of life's best moments, woody's sister' wedding in october of 2012, that his father gathered the family for some bad news. karen had been diagnosed with stage three ovarian cancer. >> the wedding was beautiful. couldn't have been more perfect. mom and dad were dancing around. the entire family. right when it came out of my dad's mouth, i broke down. woody said he knew at that very moment this is how his mother would die. and this past may she did. the very next day woody was back in the headlands.

this time, though, with a plan. to put his grief to good use. he's now in training. woody is heading to the sierra to tackle the john muir trail. all 210 rugged miles of it by himself, but not alone. >> to see so many people coming to support the cause all over the world that i have no affiliation with, it's cool to see. >> more than 100 people have responded to his requests for donations to help search for a cure and spread the word about this little understood disease. >> the more we can do about bringing awareness about this horrible disease, the more likelihood to decrease the amount of mothers, daughters, role models and wives from dying every year.

it's hard to tell. also a quick look at levi stadium where the niners are set to kick off their season in about a month. good morning. i'm sam brock sitting with meteorologist rob mayeda. some folks waking up with clouds and drizzle. >> yeah, we're seeing it towards oakland and san francisco. all the the way through the tri-valley. passes of low clouds to the santa clara valley. for the morning, drizzle at times probably at 9:00 or 10:00. high pressure is starting to strengthen in the afternoon. that means we'll see a chance of upper 80s to near 90. mid to upper 60s there. 80s in san jose. near 90. by tomorrow, could get closer to

outside at night to potentially attract wild animals. just last week a deer carcass was found nearby. the white house has requested $3.7 billion to deal with the border crisis. a significant portion of the money would go into clearing up a court backlogged at preventing thousands of migrant children from being returned to their countries, is that really where the money would be going? this morning we dig into the numbers. >> the fury is pal able and growing with each arrival of buses filled with migrant workers and families. >> these are illegal aliens. they came across illegally. >> looking to calm tensions. the obama administration wrote this, a letter to house speaker john boehner asking the congress for quote, 3.7 billion to comprehensively address this urgent humanitarian situation. what will the money be used for?

josh says most will go to undocumented immigrants trying to rally the country. >> that's what a large chunk would be devoted towards. that's hiring judges and officials who could address the backlog that crept up in the recent months. >> reporter: instead of using the the whou fact sheet that gets money by the department receiving it, which is confusing, we created four basic categories and counted up the billions for ourselves. the first, temporary disdainment and the biggest pot. 2.5 billion. the a distant second, border enforcement, nearly 800 million and goes towards increasing surveillance and border security teams. foreign aid is tax for 300 million. that's money to reimmigrate migrants like guatemala, stamp out gang violence and educate

the population on the dangers of trying to sneak to the u.s. lastly, the $64 million question, how much of the 3.7 billion will be spent on the judicial process? the white house talks about $64 million. from hiring judges to alleviate the backlog of cases and legal representation for migrants. an immigrants rights advocate fears they are getting shortchanged. >> given that many of the children may have claims that are very complicated and time consuming and require a lot of legal expertise, it's imperative that they have lawyers who help represent them. and judges who are able to quickly hear their case adequately. >> and they are very happy about the billions of dollars that would go to providing more humane living conditions for undocumented migrants. spending most of the mown to clear up the jammed court

situation. the reality is less than 2% of the funds would go to judges and legal representation, making that claim wrong. moving on, some of san francisco's high end retailers suffered major losses yesterday after a construction crew broke a water main just off of union square. some of the luxury retailers and businesses had two feet of water in their basements. the financial impact at the high-end stores like chanel and jimmy choo is unknown. some stores had to close their doors p for the day. utility officials say a contractor is to blame for breaking the eight-inch pipe. the city could seek to have the contractor compensate the retailers for their losses. the greats of the sfwran 49ers hit the field again for one very last game at candle stick park. profootball hall of famers joe montana, jerry rice and steve young played alongside other retired star players in a game

of flag football. they played in front of a crowd of 30,000 fans. it's billed as the last football game at that stadium. one fan told us he followed joe montana since the start of his career. >> it's fun to see him play. he still has the arm. he still has the voice. he'll always be joe montana. >> probably still better than quarterbacks in the league right now. fans say it was bittersweet to see them go. but they're ready to see the current team play at the brand new levi stadium. this has been the place for countless memories. here's a few that stand out. who can forget the catch? dwight clark hauled in a game winning touchdown pass to lead the 49ers to their very first super bowl. and the earthquake struck san

in seattle. they look to add to a three-run lead in the eighth. and a spectacular throw to nail willy blumquist at the plait. and a couple of batters later, a three-run home run. the mariners beat oeblg land 6-2. the a's lead the angels by a game and a half. the giants hosting the diamond backs in a matinee game. san francisco starting pitcher pitched well. only giving up a couple runs. it feels two runs too many. that home run evened the series. their starting pitcher getting seven shutout innings in that one. and now much more ahead on "today in the bay." as california's demography changes by the year, state law mage ic makers taking action to get

more minority students into the political system. we're up next with both sides of the hot debate. good morning. i'm mike inouye. there's a lot to do on "today in the bay." let's celebrate by pointing out the bay area is home to two of the three towns in the entire united states. we'll start with san francisco japan town. they'll educate the town on calligraphy and the musical arts. artists from tokyo, chicago and the bay area. this is part of japan week up there celebration traditions. still a huge part of the japanese-american culture. and another japan town in san jose. this is going to be closed to cars and filled with boots for the annual bazaar. and later it's filled with dancers. that's tonight and tomorrow night. both nights. we remember it with joy and so,

california's legislative democrats are in a bind over affirmative action. two large blocks, latino and asian-american legislators

disagree upon what should be done on the rift in the massive democratic majority. larry gerston is joining us to sort this out. what's at stake in the discussion? >> a lot. it's really about higher education opportunities. they stand for the next generation and to understand the future, we have to examine the past. they banned college admissions in 1996. that time 40% of scholarships went to whites. about 10% to latinos. since then a lot has happened. california's demography has really changed. take a look at the breakdown today compared to 1998. whites from 58% to less than 39. 38.8%. latinos up to 39%. now the largest group in the state. asian-americans moving up as well. african-americans going down a bit. you put it together and the white population has gone down

20 20%. >> okay, you just laid out the demographics in the united states. now what about the demographics in the uc system. >> and that's where it gets dicey. uc admissions from fall of 2k0 14 are as follows. latinos 29%. whites 27%. asian-americans 36%. the largest block by far. african-americans 4%. the asian-americans are in much higher proportions than their population in the nation. now to the question of affirmative action. latino legislators would like it restored to increase the number of admissions. earlier this year, now it gets really interesting. the legislature came close to

placing a constitutional amendment on the november ballot. what would that have done? it would have reinstate d affirmative action. then asian-americans after a huge public outcry in the asian-american community, especially in southern california. they reversed the vote. they asked the proposed amendment to be left off the ballot. is it as simple as saying latino lawmakers would like to say affirmative action reaffirmed, brought back, reinstated and on the other side, the asian lawmakers would like things to stay the way they are. one raised reports based on how the race is index fld the uc system. is it that simple? >> we always want to avoid the word simple. but it gets down to the two groups. each one wants what they think is their fair share. what does it means in terms of

the future? >> short-term, this issue is under study, by the way. it's under examination, according to the speaker's office. that's a nice way of saying we're stuck between a rock and a hard place. asian-american students with outstanding grades feel legitimately they have earned their places. and latino representatives feel their number do not reflect the portion of the pop lax. that's a claim that can't be disputed. politically, this is dynamite. it remains to be seen if this dispute will pit some democratic legislators against some others and poison their majority. and if that's the case, sam, there could be serious repercussions in november.

>> could you argue there's affirmative action to try to benefit the people with lower means that could have direct correlation with race and boosting affirmative action? the low kalt community funding program, an extra 35% for english learners. and that's not affirmative action. the it's certainly a way of boosting up some groups relative to others. we're going to have to see how that plays out. >> and this issue has already been examined by the supreme court this year. how does that weigh in with what's going on in california? sp and examinened also in terms of school desegregation. all the things way in here. and they are fundamental. some groups believe no mearlt how you kit, we're not getting what we deserve. other groups say we're just fine. it's the story of american politics. >> it will be interesting to see how california voters will weigh

francisco. good morning. you see the view looking back to san francisco has got some mist there, too. and into san francisco, or off to the west around the golden gate bridge, you're seeing 56 degrees right now. and temperatures are not warming up a whole lot thanks to the low clouds, which will break up to partly cloudy skies a little bit later on.

the winds increase around 3:00 as they typically do. the sea breeze starts to rush on in. right now not too strong, the onshore winds. enough to push the low clouds in to livermore and fairfield. low clouds and drizzle, that's the first part of the story we'll see up to lunchtime for the bay areas. low clouds very thick on the coast where they'll be staying throughout the day. so around san jose, temperatures climbing to the low 89 -- 80s later today. 89 degrees as the low clouds begin to clear. the other sbregsing part of the forecast coming in late tonight on into monday paz we watch the surge of tropical moisture coming up out of the desert southwest to reintroduce a slight chance of summer showers to the forecast. not today. perhaps monday and tuesday.
