there's a cease-fire between israel and the gaza strip. more than 172 people are dead following several days of back and forth rocket fire. thousands of palestinians are leaving their homes and seeking safety in u.n. shelters. u.n. secretary ban ki-moon says it's in the interest of both sides to stop the fighting and prevent further casualties. nbc's ayman mohyeldin has the latest. >> reporter: from the skies above and the sea, israel is stepping up its campaign to destroy rocket sites in gaza. morning warning residents by phone and leaflets leave your homes or risk injury. in the middle of the night, thousands of palestinian families began leaving with little they have. some of the children barely had time to put on their shoes before escaping. thousands the u.n. said have already taking refuge at schools now used as makeshift shelters.

while some families fled the fighting, others mourn hose lost in it. overcome with grief, she lost three of her children fainted. mourners pray for the dead. 13 of them from one family. relatives of gaza's police chief who were targeted. the police chief survived but at least 18 others were killed, including ahmed's parents and four siblings. a palestinian child now orphaned by yet another war. for some, the violence has become unbearable. today, the u.s. evacuated its citizens with the help of the u.n. making the journey with this palestinian-american from houston, texas. they were here visiting relatives, but now too afraid to stay. do you feel bad about leaving gaza right now? >> very. i'm leaving, yet, my body is leaving. my heart is staying back home.

my heart's staying in gaza. >> reporter: an escape to safety for one american family that very few palestinians in gaza will have. >> that was nbc's ayman mohyeldin reporting. as the crisis on the border continues president obama is trying to foster support from governors across the country. health and human services secretary sylvia mathews burwell met with several governors on sunday. many expressed concern about the cost of hosting undocumented immigrants. many are pushing back against the president's $3.7 billion request to address the crisis. i'm joined by nbc's brian mooar in washington. brian, are we going to see a resolution anytime soon? >> reporter: well, that's the big question. here in washington whatever is done it has to be done quickly because congress is about to head off on its august break. with that clock ticking down, the white house is now looking to the states for help.

this vacant army reserve building outside of baltimore might have been a temporary shelter for some of the thousands of children streaming across the u.s. border. until residents and local officials said no. >> the bottom line is, the community doesn't want it. the representatives from congress don't want it. the department of health and human services shouldn't be looking at it. >> reporter: it's just one example of the pushback that the obama administration is facing as it tries to deal with the growing backlog of children and families coming into this country faster than they can be processed. >> there has to be a halt to this. that's what we want. >> reporter: on capitol hill, the house and senate racing to find middle ground in the days remaining before their august recess. >> when we see these children, we see the faces our children. we see the faces of our nieces, nephews. we see the faces of our community. >> reporter: while washington searches for a solution, the obama administration is looking for help from the nation's governors. at the conference in memphis, several of the governors

reportedly met behind doors with president obama's hhs secretary making it clear they're not ready to bear the burden uncle sam can't. lawmakers here are struggling to find a balance between speeding up deportation and caring for children and their families while still in this country. >> thank you, brian. some breaking news to bring you overnight. the mysterious odor has prompted the evacuation of 100 homes in southeastern pennsylvania. the fire chief says crews have not penpointed the cause of the odor yet. but they have gotten high readings of hydrogen cyanide. the centers for disease control called hydrogen cyanide a systemic chemical asphyxiant and exposure to it can be fatal and the red cross is on hand to assist the evacuees. it's about to be one of the biggest maritime operations yet today.

crews are beginning to tow away the "costa concordia." the 114-thousand ton ship has been resting on underwater platforms since it rolled upright or parbuckled. the cruise ship's final resting place will be genoa where it will be scrapped. the world cup has ended with a german victory. germany and argentina met for the second time in history in the final. and in an emotional match. scoreless in regulation, it went on to extra time there. and in the 113th minute, it was germany who finally finds the net for the only goal of the game. germany wins 1-nil to claim their fourth world cup title last won in 1990. tears of joy for some and tears of sadness for others but back in buenos aires, anger, argentinian fans rioted in the streets following the loss. they also tried to vandalized stores. reportedly more than 50 people were detained. the new agency reports about 20 people injured, 15 of them police. well, the polar vortex is

back. well, sort of. a polar invasion. >> sounds like a good term. >> bill will tell us all about it. what's the update here? >> that was the beg buzz last week. the beg summer cooldown was coming. polar invasion is what we're trying to call it. what it just means is that it's a very unusual weather pattern that's set up across the country. you're used to heat waves in july through the intermountain west. that's not exactly the big headline. temperature 20 degrees fwloe average. in some cases 30 degrees below average in the great lakes. that's very unusual for this time of year. in the west with all the cool air in the east, you know that that means you're going to be very warm. yesterday was a very hot day from phoenix to vegas all the way to boise. we're at 99 yesterday at medford. it's not right looping the coast. things have been weird. with high pressure sit waited over boys where i and salt lake city, everything is moving to the south from the east to the west. the opposite direction most storms do.

welcome back. over 1,000 california firefighters are working to contain the so-called bully fire. it's burned almost 4,000 acres. authorities say a man on an illegal pot cultivation site started it. the accused, freddy alexander smoke -- yeah, that's his real last name -- smoke. his truck's exhaust allegedly ignited dry grass near the marijuana plot. in florida, bad weather is blame for a power outage on disney's famed monorail. many passengers say it was a lightning strike. there were no reported injuries. police in indiana say a stolen mustang was going the
