penalty shootout. that would have been a weak way to finish. celebrating throughout germany this morning. >> all the shock of the people of argentina. >> the little kids crying. >> that's worse. >> let's get right to this morning's breaking news. the search for what is causing a very odd smell in skippack wnship outside philadelphia. it's forcing people out of their homes. nbc's ron allen is there. ron, what can you tell us? >> reporter: good morning, matt. haz-mat teams are on duty. it's a very mysterious situation. it has a lot of people very upset. it's also a potentially dangerous situation. all homes have this green notice on the door. telling people that a volatile or an organic compound has been found in the basement. those strong odors, a gas-like feeling, coming from the sump pumps of several basements. residents have been told before returning they should have their homes tested. they left suddenly and without much warning. >> as soon as i walked in the house i said you've got to get the kids out.

something don't smell right. >> reporter: that foul odor led haz-mat crews to evacuate residents of the fairlawn court homes last night. an investigation found strong readings for a chemical called hydrogen cyanide. according to the centers for disease control, often used for fumigation and industrial production of plastics, dyes and pesticides. rapid exposure can be fatal. >> as soon as i walked in the house with my meter, my meter went into alarm telling me they had high readings. as we went in each attached house, we kept getting readings. >> reporter: hydrogen cyanide is also said to be a by-product of fires. but there are no reports of anything burning in the neighborhood. in fact, the local fire chief says he doesn't think it's hydrogen cyanide causing the odor, but some other chemical. with so much uncertainty, everyone here is being extremely cautious. the gas can smell like bitter almond or old sneakers, but many people cannot detect it. >> they told us to open all our windows and we had to evacuate and stay outside until further notice. >> reporter: anyone experiencing headaches or nausea were advised

savannah. the israeli military said it shot down a palestinian drone that was launched from gaza. hamas has claimed responsibility for deploying at least three dronace. israel now is facing an additional security threat. that coming from the northern border. lebanon fired two rockets into israel before israel responded deep into lebanese territory. but here in gaza it is the palestinian people feeling the brunt of the ongoing violence. trapped with no way out. gaza skyline pounded again this morning. more than 40 targets hit by the military. sites it says are used to make, store, and launch rockets into israel. more than 20 fired into israel overnight. some intercepted by the country's missile defense system iron dome. israel's considering launching a ground invasion to stop the rocket fire. it's begun warning thousands of residents to leave their homes in the north of the gaza strip

or risk being injured or worse killed. the warnings have sent people escaping for their lives. we went to a neighborhood in the north today. many had already left their homes. on a street we found this man who stayed not only out of defiance, but because he had simply nowhere to go. thousands have begun taking refuge at u.n. schools now turned into makeshift shelters. others like this woman were 1 of 150 american citizens evacuated by the u.n. out of gaza. >> in gaza we don't get warnings. we don't get sirens. we don't have an iron dome like they do. >> reporter: she's safely out of gaza and now heading back home to houston, texas, with her family. lucky to be one of the few leaving the war behind. the u.n. says 17,000 palestinians have already moved into some of those makeshift shelters. they say up to 300,000 could be displaced in the event of a ground invasion. this is a race against time. diplomatic efforts are picking up.

afternoon, temperatures in the 70s again anywhere from 10 to 20 degrees below average. it lasts into wednesday. and then temperatures will start to moderate. however, we're also watching this cooler air as it comes in. it is also going to be pushing into a very unstable air mass. so as this cold front makes its way across from the great lakes into the plains, we have all this warm moist air coming in clashing with the cooler air with the polar invasion. then we have risks of storms from little rock into new england. today on into tomorrow. it shifts into the southeast with damaging winds, heavy rain. in fact, we've got flash flood watches new england all the way into the mid-atlantic states. that's because as this pushes in, we're going to look for a lot of heavy rain making its way in. some areas looking at anywhere from 3 to 5 inches of rain from

india there. >> you sure you saw flames? >> reporter: but witnesses saw it too. >> it was coming from here over. >> reporter: cheryl robert walking her dog snapped these photos. >> there's a huge jumbo jet over my head and it's pretty scary. i'm not used to seeing that around here. then we saw it do a hard turn. it was just circling. very scary. >> reporter: air india flight 144 bound for mumbai shut down one engine and turned back to newark airport yesterday. it landed safely but with tires blown. authorities said an engine temperature warning went off in the cockpit. >> first thing is you fight the fire, declare an emergency. you have procedures and training. >> reporter: yeah, all of the passengers on board were rerouted to their destinations, but now investigators will be looking at the engine to see exactly what happened. >> very scary. tom costello, thank you.

italian newspapers this morning report that the pope francis believes many in the church are pedophiles. about 2% of priests. a vatican spokesman says the interviewer didn't make an official record of the conversation and it was using he pope's words from his memory. tense moments as disney world where passengers had to be rescued from a monorail. passengers say a lightning strike was to blame, but officials couldn't confirm that. disney crews tried to restart the monorail, but were unsuccessful. crews evacuated everyone. some left through an emergency hatch on the roof and a fire truck. fortunately no one hurt. right here at rockefeller center, six people suffered minor burns when a camera on the top of the rock caught fire. embers fell onto the victims on

the observation deck. five adults refused treatment, but a child was taken to the nearby hospital. and fire crews are making little progress this morning on a huge wildfire burning in northern california. the fires now burned more than 3,700 acres and it's destroyed six structures. investigators believe it was sparked by the exhaust from a truck delivered by a man to a illegal marijuana growing operation. the man was arrested. more than 1,000 firefighters and aircraft are battling the blaze. uncle sam's newest recruit doesn't need food, water, or sleep. meet the legged squad support system. the robot can carry 400 pounds of gear relieving the burden from servicemen and women. it can follow squads through rugged terrain even adjusting its path to avoid obstacles. marines are testing it in hawaii. according to troops, much like a trained animal would. it looks like something out of star wars.

cruise ship is preparing for its final voyage. they're beginning the process of refloating the wreckage. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. it took two and a half years and more than a billion dollars, but finally if it all goes according to plan, the "concordia" will be towed away in a week's time. coming afloat one deck at a time. on monday the refloating of the "costa concordia" was finally underway. the last phase of the most daunting and expensive maritime salvage operation in history. last september the ship was rolled upright. the refloating will be just as difficult. 30 giant tanks filled with water have kept the ship stable. starting monday compressed air will be pumped in giving the ship the buoyancy it needs to float.

it will be moved away from the shore before it can continue. months of calculations came down to this. >> she's not pretty underwater. so there are a lot of cracks. we know some of them will get worse. we'll have to monitor them and see if they stop where we expect them to stop. >> reporter: the island's mayor says it's with vacation season, but can't wait for the island to go back to being the pristine paradise it once was. >> the important thing to remove the ship as soon as possible. >> reporter: the refloating operation will last a week. then the "concordia" will be ready to be towed away for its last journey to the scrap yard. the salvage team told us the operation is going well.

dangerously close. the latest to close its doors, trump plaza. the atlantic city beach and iconic boardwalk once vibrant with summer tourists and vacationers basking in the sun outside while inside high rollers are betting on a good time. gamblers, slots filling the air. but now a boardwalk mainstay is going silent. trump plaza which first opened its doors in 1984 will close down in september. they're giving notices to employees this week. and it's not the only casino set to fold. next month the showboat is expected to dock for good. and revel, one of the newer resorts, could close as well. it's a big hit for the struggling city. more than 7,800 jobs would be lost. a quarter of atlantic city's casino workforce. and it comes just three years after governor chris christie issued a five-year plan

promising $30 million a year in marketing to help the city rebound. but despite the pushing with the big bucks and the big names, new casinos popping up on the northeast could make it too crowded. >> we have many new casinos in pennsylvania too. >> i'll be exporting exclusively from atlantic city. >> reporter: the once bustling boardwalk whose life is on "boardwalk empire" has been close to bust before. john betts who has owned a starbucks in trump plaza for years says he's still betting on a.c. >> i still think the town has a lot to offer. it can be a viable place to run a business. >> reporter: a gamble some may be willing to take. so we got a statement last night from the american gaming association. and they say what's happening here in atlantic city is not saturation. that there are not just too many casinos in the northeast. they say restrictive regulations

issue now that's getting a lot of special attention because of the world cup. just like in the national football league, soccer players also face a very serious risk of concussion. and some say more needs to be done to protect them. here's nbc's stephanie gosk. >> reporter: in the world cup final, german player kristoff cramer took a jarring hit to the head. after a check from trainers, he kept on playing. 15 minutes later, cramer was physically helped off the field. soccer is a contact sport. concussions are part of the game. but former major league soccer player brian neymoff believes they aren't taking the problem serious enough. he suffered a career-ending hit. he hit you with his shoulder. >> at full speed. my head and neck whipped to the left and my body followed afterwards. >> reporter: he played the rest of that game and another three days later. >> the next day was the worst

back now at 7:42 as we look at montauk, new york. we start a special week-long special called shark watch. there's been an uptick in attacks. all week we'll be examining the science behind one of the most mysterious creatures on earth. let's get to kerry sanders in montauk where real-life events inspired the story of "jaws." so good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. you remember in the movie "jaws" there's a crusty fisherman who goes out for the monster shark. that legend actually gave way to real world shark contests. people will go out with rods and reels and try and land the biggest shark and haul it back after killing it and show it off. now as we fast forward, those

events have given way to something different which is catching and releasing. and it's all in the name of science. a fisherman catches a rare specimen. it's a tiger shark. one of the three most aggressive in the ocean. there was a time when all sharks here would be hauled ashore, trophies of man versus predator. but now for the second year running, recreational anglers invited scientists on their boats to attach satellite tags. their work to understand sharks is more crucial this summer as sightings including great whites like this one spotted last month off the jersey shore are increasing. it may be in part because scientists say the great white population in the atlantic is up 42% since 1997. >> i was blown away. i didn't think i would be bit. >> reporter: 14-year-old tristan durham was attacked in florida last week.

>> there he is. look at him. >> reporter: and over the july fourth weekend -- >> get out of the water! shark! get out of the water! >> reporter: -- a swimmer in manhattan beach was bitten by a shark reportedly trying to escape a fisherman's hook. so far this year in the united states, there have been 17 attacks. 14 of those off the florida coast. the shark tagging in montauk began last year. among those scientists are now finding is one named april. april a 103 pounder dillydallied off the coast of virginia, went no further south of north carolina. and pinged east of new jersey. traveling over 11,000 miles. beamer, a 200 pound blue shark traveled as far as maine before heading to costa rica before he was killed by commercial fishermen.

past week, people with kids say there's no way. there's no way you can forget about a kid, your own child in the back seat of your car. and then leave your child here as long as this gentleman allegedly did in georgia. how did it happen for you? explain to people who have kids, how could you do it? >> i ask myself that all the time. i don't have the answer to that, really. i love my daughter more than anything in the world. and i would have given my life for her in a moment. but something happened, a mistake, an accident happened and i live with it forever. so all i can do is reach out and try to do something good and tell others. >> doctor, you've worked with couples through this kind of grief and in this very situation like christie and brett have dealt with. what part of the brain is it that could allow something like

this to happen that you don't process or realize you left your child? how do you explain that? >> i've studied these cases now for ten years. in which you see good parents such as brett that forget their children. this has happened hundreds of times. i look for patterns. what's the common element in these cases? and you find the parent is following a well traveled route. when we do something out of habit, we activate a part of our brain that suppresses part of our brain used to remind us that there's a child in the car. an imaging study says when you do something out of habit, you actually forget things you had learned recently. and although it sounds a bit insensitive to compare remembering a child to remembering groceries, it's analogous to when you drive home and say you'll stop at the store and you forget. then you realize you have no
