winter in the middle of summer. with high pressure in the west and low pressure in the east, the country is riding a roller coaster of weather extremes. in minneapolis at the all-star game's home run derby, it didn't feel much like the usual hot july night at all. temperatures there dropped into the 50s. >> a little cold. a little brisk. at least for middle of summer. feels like an early fall down out here, but, you know what, i come here to have some fun at the all-star game. a little weather isn't going to hurt us. we're minnesotans, you know? we have been through a lot. >> it's cold for summer. >> cold. >> we came with t-shirts and shorts expecting july weather. >> bill will have more on those polar invasions in just a few minutes. stick around for that. breaking overnight, israel approved a proposed cease fire deal with gaza. this comes a week after heavy fighting in the gaza strip. so far hamas islamists responded

suspiciously to the cease fire deal saying they were not consulted by cairo. hamas continues to fire rockets this morning and has vowed the attacks will increase in ver oft and intensity. palestinians died in the rocket attacks. many of them children. secretary kerry will not push for et deal. he has been weighing whether to extend his visit. he will end his nine-day trip today. speaking in vienna right now, kerry said he cannot condemn enough the brazen firing of rockets by hamas after goodwill efforts to work on the cease-fire. he met with israeli officials claiming to have shot down a drone from gaza. hamas claiming to have sent several drones to carry out special missions deep inside israel. israel has not commented on whether the drone was armed.

for weeks we've heard about delays in care. now new accusations. compensation for vets filing claims for disability benefits to fight huge backlogs. the v.a. allegedly making tens of thousands of payments without adequate evidence those applicants deserve that money. patrick meehan commented on the problem. pooh we're seeing the exact same type of cooking the books on the benefits side of the v.a. as has been exposed on the health care side, and this is a whole new exploration of the management problems at the v.a. >> unless fixed, it could cost $371 million over the next five years. south african olympic blade runner oscar pistorius, well, he is currently on trial for the murder of his girl friend reeva steenkamp. he got into a scuffle, though, at a club over the weekend. pistorius's reps were quick to point out it was not a fight, as originally reported on social

media. reports say a man walked up to pistorius at his booth and began aggressively interrogating him about the trial. after a back and forth argument, pistorius asked to be left alone and left soon after. the defense wrapped up its case last week. there's a delay of one month so the teams can prepare closing arguments. dick cheney says the united states needs to spend more money on the military. at an event on monday cheney was asked what advice he would give to the next president. >> absolutely turn around the whole trend with respect to the wraits military. that ought to be our top priority. we're spending not food stamps or highways or anything else. number one responsibility as president is to defend the constitution of the united states. he is the commander in chief, and he is absolutely devastating the united states military today. we turn to the running of the bulls in pamp loana, spain,

community with like 103 temperatures in the middle of the summer. boise was 103. you notice fargo up there in the upper right. they only had a high of 69 degrees. that was it. the cool air missed the west completely. if anything, it helped makes things even hotter through the west. still a warm morning. we're still at 90 in the desert and the warm spot today will be from the medford area and over towards boise. interior sections of california. that's where the high pressure ridge continues. two different blue h's on the map. one from canada, and one is from the intermountain west and the desert areas, and it's completely different air masses. one is a polar cold air mass. one is almost like a desert air mass. we have a little bit of rain this morning around the vegas area. we're not expecting too much, though, around the grand canyon, and look at that today. 106 in bakersfield, everybody

welcome back on this tuesday morning. we saw the peak of the heat for you in boise and salt lake city. today we'll drop to the mid and upper 90s. not medford. 106 today. that could be near record highs for them. 80 in seattle. we're going to drop the temperatures a little bit in portland throughout the next couple of days. maybe two or three degrees per day.
