craig, good morning. what's the situation there? >> reporter: savannah, good morning to you. take a look at what happened. we're in the back yard of a house here on long island. that storm you mentioned completely uprooted this tree. 80-foot-long tree. miraculously, no one was hurt. no major damage, in fact, either. but this was the scene from maryland to maine. somewhere between 3 and 10 inches of rain fell and it fell fast knocking down trees, shutting down highways and roads as well. >> i looked and the 80-foot tree behind me was laying on its side, knocked down my back fence. now it's completely gone. >> reporter: in new york, heavy rains and gusty winds knocked down this 100-year-old tree in a long island back yard. the homeowner seth coslowe says he's lucky to be alive. >> my wife is four days overdue with our first baby. my neighbor had a baby four days ago. if this tree fell one way or the other, it would have been complete destruction. >> reporter: flood warnings are still in effect for northeast

massachusetts and southern new hampshire after severe weather moved through the area late tuesday bringing down trees and wires. >> there was plenty of wind. we scooped up the dog, our flashlights, and headed to the basement. >> reporter: storms also brought heavy rain, thunder and lightning to western and central connecticut. >> i've been here 20 years and i've never had anything like this happen. >> reporter: a lightning bolt struck the back of a house in waterbury and caused it to catch on fire. >> my son, quick thinking, grabbed the extinguisher and put the fire out. >> reporter: and in new jersey, about 13,000 homes and businesses were without power as the evening rush hour traffic slowed to a snail's pace across the george washington bridge. >> when we read the banner over the george washington bridge, it said 240 minute wait on the bridge. >> reporter: good news to report this morning. at about 6:16 a.m. samuel jake coslowe was born. eight pounds, one ounce. the good news mom and baby is healthy.

bad news, when dad gets home, there's work to be done. >> going to need a chain saw. >> little known sign of labor. the tree breaking. who knew. craig, thank you. >> they don't always show that in the baby books. it's a much different story out west where people are still struggling with the historic drought. late last night, lawmakers approved hefty penalties were made for homeowners who waste water. here's nbc's mike taibbi. >> all in favor. >> aye. >> reporter: this morning california's worst drought on record is also bringing record fines. with millions now facing penalties of up to $500 per day for a list of specific violations. among them, washing your car without a shutoff nozzle on the hose, unchecked runoff, washing down sidewalks or driveways. to catch water wasters, some cities are encouraging shaming reporting others violating the regulations. this woman who didn't want her

identity known said she'd be willing to turn over photos like these. >> this is just weeds. very sad. we're in a water shortage. we need to be aware. >> reporter: despite governor brown's plea for a 20% voluntary reduction in statewide water use, the demand has ticked up slightly from a year ago. mostly along coastal southern california from san diego to l.a. drought experts say conserving is essential common sense. >> it's okay to let your lawn suffer a bit until we get through this time. >> reporter: and it's not just citizens now on notice. water suppliers will face fines of up to $10,000 a day if they defy or ignore a court ordered conservation measures. again, this all takes effect in just a couple of weeks. august 1st statewide. and it'll be interesting to see where and how and how often the new rules will be enforced. >> mike taibbi, thanks very much. al, as we turn to you, obviously the storms get a lot of attention, but this drought is terrible out west.

>> worst on record. and there's no relief the next seven days. the reason for this is we have had the jet stream and ridge up to the north. big area of high pressure dominating. that high pressure has really just stayed in place. we continue to have this very warm air coming in. seattle today, 87 degrees. 11 degrees above normal. 97 in boise. 7 degrees above normal in fresno. as we move on into the day, those temperatures will continue to rise. tomorrow, pretty much the same thing. seattle, 82. fresno, cooling down a little bit. boise will see a high of 100 degrees. nine degrees above average. here in the east, we have big problems. the heavy rain and thunderstorms continue. right now they have a ground stop at boston logan international.

newark, delays of 30-to-40 minutes and counting. we look out wider. you can see the showers and thunderstorms making its way up the coast. flash flood watches and warnings continue. this stuff will start drying out, guys and we will see a break in all this heat and humidity in the east. no break for the heat out west until friday. >> struggling. al, thank you. we have breaking news from the middle east. israel intensifying the assault on gaza a day after hamas rejected the cease-fire. nbc's ayman mohyeldin is in gaza. ayman, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, matt. gaza health officials here say 205 palestinians have been killed since the attacks began including a 5-year-old palestinian girl. more than 1,500 injured.

and for the first time since this conflict began, an israeli citizen was killed. the injuries on that side as well continuing to climb. 23 israelis have been injured. overnight a sharp escalation. israel began targeting the homes of senior hamas leaders. four children were carried to the hospital. several people at scene of the explosion were badly hurt. we saw them bloodied. some suffering serious injuries. we fear at the hospital, four of the kids have died. >> ayman, any other attacks since the one you witnessed? >> reporter: at this particular point, not yet. there had been an exchange of rockets into gaza. it is extremely chaotic in the past few moments. >> we're obviously having some phone difficulties with ayman. the report is he witnessed an air strike and four children seemed seriously wounded.

after that, they were taken from the hotel where they were taken to the hospital where he is. we will have more information. now to natalie with breaking news this morning. >> terrifying moments on a flight from south africa to hong kong overnight. 20 people injured when the plane ran into severe turbulence. nbc's katy tur is in london with reaction from passengers. katy, good morning. >> reporter: natalie, scary moments in the sky overnight. south african airlines flight 286 on its way to hong kong experienced severe turbulence over kuala lumpur, malaysia. of the 165 onboard, 20 of them were injured, including three crew members. look at this picture a passenger posted to instagram of a hole in the overhead compartment. he wrote, worst flight ever. crazy turbulence sent people flying everywhere. guy next to me made this hole with his head. lots of passengers with bumps and and scratches and a few serious spinal injuries. i'm all good, but i'm terrified.

another woman on board told me the turbulence hit while the fasten seat belt sign was off and that she was flung into the aisle. the pilot deemed it okay to keep flying and the plane did land safely three hours later in hong kong where paramedics were waiting. imagine that, three more hours in the air with oxygen masks hanging down and a hole in the overhead compartment and two people seriously injured on board. natalie. >> my goodness that is crazy. at least ten people were killed when a powerful typhoon hit the philippines. typhoon rammasun caused widespread power outages. the eye of the storm passed south of manila today. more than 370,000 people were evacuated from their homes. hundreds of people took shelter inside town hall. there are new questions this morning on how much general motors actually knew about their defective ignition switches linked to at least 13 deaths. according to a report in "the new york times," gm told federal

authorities it could not provide answers with the crash that killed 25-year-old gene erickson. but a month earlier a gm engineer had concluded in an internal evaluation that car had most likely lost power disabling its air bags. it's just one of three cases of fatal crashes in which gm said it had not assessed the cause. the nation's aging infrastructure is about to get a financial boost from congress. lawmakers in the house voted overwhelmingly to extend highway funding with nearly $11 billion. a similar bill in the senate. measures to increase taxes. transportation will be cut by 28% on august 1st unless the senate and house can come to an agreement. a man is behind bars this morning after police say he broke into the kennedy compound tuesday night in massachusetts.

police said the 53-year-old man told them he was inside the home because he wanted to talk to a member of the kennedy family. and he also said he was looking for the singer katy perry. at least one person was in the home during the break in. the suspect will be arraigned this morning. and a close call for the pilot of a pontoon plane in alaska who narrowly missed landing right on top of a humpback whale. take a look here. just before the plane hits the water, the pilot then pulls up and lands safely a few feet later. you can see some water from the blowhole coming up there. the pilot said he didn't see the whale. he was reacting to the commotion by people on shore. saying pull up. whale! >> that would have been terrible. >> i'm glad i wasn't in alaska when that happened. let's show you what we have going on for our friends out west. a warm day in seattle.

good morning, i'm meteorologist christina loren. a very interesting forecast to tell you about for today. temperatures overall are going to drop off five to ten degrees where we ended up yesterday and humidity going to decline as well. 80 for the south bay. 78 on the peninsula. hit 70 degrees on the east shore i have to tell you, wind will increase. grab the jacket on the east shore. yeah, 66 in san francisco, with cool breeze all day long. >> thank you. we've got a young driver in the family, you'll want to listen to this next story. a lot of teens are driving the cheaper cars with little safety. now the insurance institute for highway safety has compiled a list of recommended used cars specifically for teen drivers. let's get to tom costello who's following that this morning. tom, good morning. >> reporter: did your parents buy you a new car and if so was

it a clunker or solid car? turns out teens killed in car crashes are more likely to be driving smaller older vehicles that don't provide the best protection in crashes. it's a rite of passage for millions of teenagers every year. first the permit, the license, then the new wheels. but research suggests that teenagers are far too often driving cars that simply aren't safe enough. in a new report, the insurance institute for highway safety warns parents they could be sacrificing safety for affordability. 28% buy small cars that don't offer good crash protection. more than half the vehicles for teens were 2006 or older lacking the latest safety technology. and even more, 2/3 of family hand me downs were 2006 or older. what should parents of teen drivers be looking for? bigger and heavier is safer. stay away from high horsepower engines and electronic stability control is critical.

>> it's compared to seatbelts in terms of the reduction and risk. teens should not be driving a vehicle without electronic stability control. it's a must. >> reporter: because teens are already at risk, the insurance institute says it's worth paying a little more. it recommends two tiers of affordable vehicles. first those under $20,000. large cars like a buick regal 2011 or later. a mid-size could include the honda accord and sedan. the small suv like the tucson. the toyota sienna. among those under $10,000, the large cars like the acura rl. small suvs like the ford escape. and minivans including the kia sedona. another big challenge, making sure the car you're buying for your teen has not been involved in a major safety recall. amber rose was the first death associated with the chevy cobalt and the ignition switch recall. her air bags failed to deploy. >> i miss her very much. there's nothing i wouldn't give

to have her back. even for a day. >> reporter: the advice? check carfax and the federal registry to make sure any used car you're buying has not been involved in an accident or a recall or crash. >> we urge parents to think about the high death of teen drivers and try to spend a little more. >> reporter: meanwhile, adding a teen to a married couple's insurance means insurance goes up by 79%. teenage boys are more expensive than girls. the premium increase are for 16-year-olds up 96% for 16-year-olds. >> thank you very much. >> i can't believe i'm three years away from this. it's scary. it is. major league baseball held its annual all-star game last night. of course gives fans a chance to honor all of baseball's all stars. but last night especially derek jeter who's playing in his final season. he did not disappoint. nbc's joe fryer is at target field in minneapolis. joe, good morning to you.

"today in the bay" is being held in a santa cruz county jail on $1.5 million bail. prosecutors say surveillance shows tichelman injecting hayes with heroin and she gathered her things before stepping over hayes. his body found the next day by the captain of his yacht. the case has led police in georgia to re-examine the over dose death of tichelman's former boyfriend. so far she's not been charged in that case. also today, a judge will hear final arguments in the battle over public access to martins beach.

>> reporter: were you able to speak with your husband? she is living every parent's nightmare, her attorney said. the first public comment since she stared in court, watching her husband face murder and child cruelty charges in the death of their 22-month-old son cooper. investigators are looking into what role, if any, she may have played in cooper's death. she has not been named a suspect and is not charged with any crime. but approximate police testimony raised questions about her initial reactions when she was told cooper had never been dropped off at day care the day she died in in font of several witnesses she states, ross must have left him in the car. >> her attorney is firing back blaming the media that have fostered a poisonous atmosphere in which leann a's every ward, action and emotion or failure is scrutinized. in much the same way, the press unjustly harassed and hounded

tkpwhraoef in private. . lisa bloom is "today"'s legal analyst. we are hearing from the mom, albeit words filtered through her attorney. what jumps out at you? >> there is no denial at all that she had any involvement in her son's death. there's no anger at her husband for having left her little boy in the car, either negligent gently or intentionally. there's no response to the specific issues that have raised eyebrows about leanna. her inappropriate comments, strange behavior. nothing on that subject. >> on that subject, part of the statement says dealing with her grief has become more difficult as the days go on. however, in large part because of constant speculation and in you endoin the media. it has fostered a poisonous atmosphere in which her every word, action and emotion or failure to cry in front of a

car, is some hidden media. has there been some unfair speculation here. >> there has been some of that. the real focus has been her comment to her husband at the police station just after her son's death. did you say too much? her telling the police that she did a search for how long a child can be left in a hot car. and her strange statements at the day care center went to pick up her little boy they weren't there and she said, well, he must have been left in the car. >> it was clear the mom was not in the car at the time the son died. are police working with her or around her to tighten the case against husband. >> that's standard operating procedure. go to someone with a lesser role, try to get information on someone with a greater role. that would be ross harris. i'm sure they're leaning on her. she has an attorney. that's the appropriate thing to do when you're the judge of

back now at 7:41. we're learning more this morning about a frightening break-in at the home of sandra bullock. tamron has the latest on that story. >> good morning, everyone b. police say the suspect in this case believed he was the father of sandra bullock's son and the oscar winner had to make a quick decision when she saw him inside her home. the newly obtained search warrant details the encounter between sandra bullock and her stalker james corbett who she spotted walking by her bedroom door. on the morning of june 8, bullock was awakened in her los angeles mansion by a loud banging at around 6:00 a.m. she thought it was coming from an open window. in the 911 call she reported seeing a male wearing a dark sweatshirt with dark pants in her home and that she'd looked herself inside a room where she remained until police arrived and corbett was taken into

custody. >> having covered sandra bullock for a number of years, i know she is very well protected and always with security. and i know that her home is also very well fortified. and so he had to go to great measures to get in there. >> reporter: as the suspect was being arrested, he began screaming sandy, i'm sorry, please don't press charges. the investigation report also says that at the time of the break-in, corbett had a notebook with photographs and handwritten letters to bullock that read in part, i will forever be thinking of you and louis my son as you are my wife by law, the law of god and you belong to me and me to you. bullock's son was not at home at the time of the incident. >> clearly a very deranged man. this was before anyone knew anything about the weapon. >> reporter: corbett was unarmed when he was arrested at the mansion. authorities later found a cash of illegal weapons at his home.

the big one over here ten feet long, are not aggressive. so even though they're not aggressive, i've got a safety diver here with a pole to keep them back and i'm going to keep my fingers in just so they don't mistake my fingers for a squid. as we know, there are all types of sharks in the ocean. some like these which they say are not aggressive, but there are those that do go out and sometimes they will attack. it may be the scariest word in the english language. >> shark! >> reporter: while the movie "jaws" is a big reason for that, in real life sharks cause panic. >> get out of the water! >> reporter: steve robles survived an attack a week ago. >> i started trying to pull it off of me. >> reporter: on tuesday he and other residents demanded a ban on anglers at the manhattan beach pier. it's believed lures bring them

maybe. because it didn't -- just kind of bit and let go when i hit it. didn't shake or anything or come back. >> reporter: which is lucky for c.j.'s friend connor who jumped right into the rescue. do you think twice about getting in the water these days? >> no, i mean, we still go out and spear all the time. >> reporter: that may be the biggest surprise. c.j. and his friends say they respect sharks, but they're not afraid. so you have a shark attack you on the worst day of your life, and now years later you don't even have residual effects? >> no. just the scar. >> reporter: and a hell of a story. >> yep. >> reporter: the experts say what you should do is to avoid that shark activity is not get in the water at early dawn or at dusk. to try to avoid expressive splashes. because as you're splashes around, a shark nearby may think that's a fish in distress. and that to a shark means food.

>> reporter: and soon she was hooked. >> i might have been a bit of an addict. i used it a lot. >> reporter: and she's not alone. fitness tracking devices count everything from steps, exercise, and calories. even how much sleep you get. >> kind of took over my life a little bit. >> reporter: some days cory said it showed she walked almost 35,000 steps. that's more than 15 miles. burning nearly 3500 calories. with all that exercise, fitbit calculated she could consume 2900 calories a day. double the recommended amount for someone cory's size. she says she started gaining weight. >> i exercised all day so i could eat as much as i wanted. and it didn't work. >> not all calories are created equal. >> reporter: a nutritionist said fitness trackers don't account the quality of calories, even stress. >> we want it to be simple. as long as we hit the calorie goal to lose weight. but unfortunately it's more

complex. >> reporter: and no fitness gadget can account for the differences in body types. >> two women who are the same height and weight may have drastically different calorie requirements if one is a bodybuilder whereas if the other recently gave birth. >> reporter: fitbit told nbc news it lets people customize their calorie burn goal nutrition to providing an automated one. this is for people who hit plateaus or who have slower metabolisms than we might estimate. other variables to consider, make sure you're logging food properly, wear them consistently, have a food plan, and weigh yourself on a consistent basis. as for cory, she said she quit using her fitbit eight months ago. she is eating healthy and is losing weight again. look, let's break this down. for most people these bracelets are fantastic. they are wonderful tools to help you stay in shape and lose weight. and if you have one and haven't found success with it yet, it

when you start to tackle subjects like these, do you think you're going to find a lot of people saying talk to the hand? >> we haven't so far. i think that, you know, our goal is to really give people the right story. and sometimes the real story isn't out there. so i think this gives them a chance to kind of set the record straight if that's the case. but -- >> i've always found celebrities want to talk about what they want to talk about. when you want to talk about what you want to talk about, they're not so willing. >> that's true. but they have real big passions and real concerns as well. whether it's jennifer garner and halle berry talking about protecting their kids from the pap r p pap rotcy, there are going to be topics that they are going to want to come in and talk about. >> i think most people realize by now you are multi-faceted. you write, you produce, you interview. have you ever thought about leaving the entertainment side of things behind and just going off and being a producer of other genres? >> it's so funny because i started wanting to be a producer.

washington bridge. trees down, power lines down, a lot of folks without power. and airports were just paralyzed for a good portion of the day. >> so is the polar invasion over? >> this was the cool air moving its way into the warm, moist air mass. it's hanging around, but it's starting to moderate now. but it's been crazy. then we've got the drought out in california. worst drought ever. one estimate $2.2 billion in losses just in agriculture alone. water restrictions, fines as out of august 1st. california will be the first to levy fines for water wasters. as much as $500 a day for individuals. as much as $10,000 a day for businesses. >> you pay the price. >> they take it to people asking to drought shame their neighbors and other businesses. you see people wasting water, post it online with the

#droughtshame. >> they shouldn't be watering their lawn or washing their cars. >> and then you've got these wildfires out in washington state and oregon with temperatures way over what they should be. into the 90s and 100s. that's going to moderate. it's calming down after today, but it's been a wild week. >> all these are connected in some way? >> the jet stream out west is up to the north. they have had no rain on the west coast. and it's warmer than usual. unfortunately no relief in sight now. >> well, switching to another topic and a scary subject, remember last month we reported the break-in at sandra bullock's home. now we're starting to find out more about what happened when she came apparently face-to-face with an intruder outside of her bedroom door last month. according to newly obtained search warrants, they describe the encounter between bullock and her alleged stalker james

corbett. and in the affidavit you learn the details apparently he broke into her home a little after 6:00 in the morning. she saw him walking right outside her bedroom. that's when she had the presence of mind, thank goodness, to lock herself into her bedroom. she called 911. she alerted the police. they were able to get there and take him into custody. fortunately her baby son -- he's no longer a baby. he's a toddler now. he was not there at the time, so thank goodness for that. but corbett was arrested. apparently when he was being arrested, he then started screaming sandy, i'm sorry, please don't press charges. and police discovered on him at the time as well he had a notebook with handwritten letters. he claimed in that notebook to be the father of the son and to be her husband. clearly a man who has a lot of issues that he's dealing with. and apparently when police investigated, they went to his

home, they did find a bunch of machine guns and other armed weapons as well. so he's currently in custody right now under arrest. due back in court -- >> he's out on bail right now. >> how is that possible? >> it's stunning, but he's got $2 million bail. usually you pay -- well, if you bond out, 10%. if you have a family member that puts up a home. he has mental health issues which is a complicating factor in some cases. but he is out on bail. he's got a court date coming up. to natalie's point, to have the presence of mind. and she was at a vulnerable point that she was in the shower and she got out of the shower according to the information available. and she heard a loud sound. and suspects that he was in the home for some period of time. >> that's frightening. >> isn't that frightening? >> and apparently in the writings in the notebook, he had alluded to the fact he had been there before. you don't know if he had been

scoping the place out. just incredibly frightening. >> terrifying for her. think about that young boy. thank goodness he wasn't there. terrifying. we're glad that guy is caught. some happier news, derek jeter. make no apologies he's my man. >> just your man? >> i'm a yankees fan. he's my man. in his 14th and final all-star game. he got a couple of standing ovations as you can imagine. and in true derek jeter form, stepped up with the biggest spotlight on him, hit a double in his first at bat and a single in his second. he was 2 for 2. this is a classic jeter hit, by the way. right down the right field line. after he was pulled from the game, he walked back to the dugout and hugged every last one of his teammates on the american league all-star team. every coach, every trainer, every pr guy. everybody in that dugout. >> just a class act.

>> they turn it on. >> we took the test. we were all hybrids except for willie. >> willie's a warrior. >> willie the warrior. >> i don't remember being a warrior. >> here's the five questions. and we'll go through them. number one, how would you rate your tolerance for pain? low? medium? high? i mean, who line likes pain? >> no one likes pain but it's about the amount of dopamine you carry in your brain on a regular basis. thinkers carry a high level. they don't have any more room for more dopamine. so they can't have that extra burst to help abate the pain. whereas a warrior who has a lower threshold, they can have that burst and it sort of carries them through. >> okay. what did you guys put? do you remember? >> i put medium because i don't like shots. >> that's kind of like hybrid. having been through childbirth, high. >> the ultimate. >> let's look at another question. before an important job interview, you always feel "a," nervous, "b," energized, or "c,"

anxio anxious? >> so again, for the thinker, they like to -- they're strategists. they like to have predictable situations. job interviews can be unpredictable. so a warrior tends to do better in that. but for thinkers who like to have that predictability, they can take steps to get some predictability. like figuring out what they're going to wear beforehand. having some control over the situation will really help a thinker in those impromptu situations. >> did we all answer energized on that? >> yeah. >> all right. i love this. where do you do your best work? bathroom was not one of the options. quiet, bustling environment or somewhere in the middle. doctor, you say there's no right or wrong answer with that. >> there's no right or wrong answer for any of these. what's important is simply that you understand yourself. how do you react to stress, and then you use your strengths. >> yeah. i'm somewhere in the middle. a little bit of something going on around me. number four, think back to the last time that you were in a potentially panicky situation. for example, your car broke down

or you got stuck in an elevator. how did you react? i guess people under pressure, those who thrive i guess are going to deal with that situation a lot better than those who don't. >> absolutely. they're going to interpret it in different ways. they're not going to think i'm in trouble. they're going to say what can i do? warriors will jump in because they're reactive. and thinkers, in that moment of panic, can take a step back and just check in and say, have i been in this situation before? on a scale of one to ten, where can i rank myself and what can i do about it. >> how do you prepare yourself if there are ways. just kind of anticipate? >> i think it's about preparation. it's about sort of running through the steps in your mind. so for a thinker, create a strategy. that's what thinkers do. and so you play it to your strengths. there is no right or wrong answers, dr. lombardo was saying. >> what if you were giving a presentation and the boss asked you something you're not prepared to answer.

manslaughter. she's accused of injecting forrest hayes with heroin on a yacht, and leaving him to die. prosecutors say surveillance video shows tichelman gathering her things before calmly stepping over hayes. at this morning's hearing, a judge refused to lower her $1.5 million bail. several of her family members in the courtroom did not want to comment. now, this case has led police in joishlg to re-examine the overdose death of tichelman's former boyfriend. so far, she has not been charged in that case. we'll have a look at weather and traffic coming up after the break.
