from nbc bay area, this is "today in the bay." well good morning everyone, 4:30, it's a thursday, i'm scott mcgrew. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. first let's check the forecast with meteorologist christina loren. >> good morning to you. really mild out there to start the day. temperatures this afternoon, very comfortable. coolest day of the week ahead. right now the 53 degrees to start in oakland. 59 in half-moon bay and 61 degrees here in san jose where we are only going to top out at about 79 degrees. we have a great looking weekend coming your way as well. we'll show you your forecast in moments. right now though, let's greet mike inouye. good morning, it's thursday. >> good morning, thursday

morning. look at dublin over here, westbound 580, majestic than that i guess. good drive here. we're talking about westbound 580 with construction, we don't see the flashing lights this morning, but crews are still clearing the area. a little yellow there, speeds are down from 56, there's no construction zone there. we'll track that, no incidents reported either. we did have slowing off the dublin great. and overnight there was a crew, looks like the vehicles may have been skewing the data. watch for flashing lights. slow down again showing up. the cone zoneses is where you want to watch for the crews. meanwhile the bay bridge and east bay approaches, smooth drive except for the right side we have a slowing approaching the cash lanes. there was over the last few minutes one closed. we'll send it over to you. we have a developing story in the middle east. israeli officials say at least

three mortars were fired from gaza is couple hours into a five-hour humanitarian cease-fire. so far no reports of injuries or damage. earlier, israel's military said it would respond firmly and decisively if hamas militants launched any attacks while the fighting was supposed to be on hold. it started at midnight which meant to the give the u.n. time to deliver food, water, and necessary supplies to palestinians in gaza. israel agreed to temporarily stop air strikes despite catching more than a dozen hamas militants tried to sneak into israel through a tunnel overnight. a number of palestinians were reportedly killed. so far, more than 2 20d people have been killed in the cross border fighting. now the cease-fire is set to end in 15 minutes. we'll be keeping an eye on it and bring you updates throughout the morning. we are learning new disturbing details about a bank

robbery, high speed chase, and shootout ended with three people dead. three men armed with ak-47's stormed a bank of the west yesterday. they took off two bank employees and a customer as hostages. offices gave chase through lodi on freeways and surface streets, and the suspects shot at them the entire time. 14 cruisers hit with bullets. the the two bank employees were either thrown or jumped out of the suspect's car. they're expected to be okay. officers finally able to shoot out the tires on the car. >> it also preliminarily appears that one of the gunman used the third and final hostage as a shield. >> and in the end, that bank customer and two of the suspects were dead. police moved in to arrest the third and only living suspect. there is some question this morning particularly from the family of the hostage that was killed whether police acted quickly enough and whether the shot that kriled the hostage came from the robbers or from

the police. >> wow, quite the scene there. it is 4:33. a 53-year-old is accused of breeching security and posing as a tsa agent. he reportedly got past the security check point in the international terminal on tuesday. and pretended to be an agent. investigators say he was drunk when he directed women into a private screening area and patted them to down. so far, he's only been charged with a public drunkenness but could face more serious charges including false imprisonment. the parent was a freshman too took his own life filed a lawsuit against the school saying police should have done more. they confronted him early one morning in february as he returned to his dorm. he was said to be drunk and upset. upset enough that the officers advised him to seek memt but didn't think -- mental health, but didn't i had he needed one at the time. the lawyer for the family

telling the mercury news no one from the school checked on him the next morning. the university so far has not commented. this is the second case of negligence filed against the school this year. the first filed by a student who was reportedly the victim of a hate crime on campus. four students charged pleaded not guilty. attorneys for the survivor of the deadly big rig crash on highway 17 will file a lawsuit today against the trucking the client still in critical condition now. the driver of the truck was speeding on highway 17 last thursday when he crashed into ten cars, killing a santa cruz man. attorneys say the truck was hauling too much height and the trucking company failed to properly train that driver. also today, we're expecting to learn whether prosecutors will file charges against the santa rosa mother accused of attacking a 12-year-old boy at school. the boy was allegedly bullying the woman's daughter. delia garcia bracketer was

investigated in may, she grabbed a boy by the throat. her attorney says she did confront the boy but never touched him. of a private investigator says the boy choked himself. take a good look, santa clara police hope this video help them find a teenager seen here in the long sleeved black shirt. they say he robbed an 11-year-old boy at knife point, and took his bike. this is video of the alleged suspect and his friend inside a 7-eleven near washington elementary school last week. police say the robbery happened shortly after the suspect left the store. happening today, the commissioner of the nfl will roll out the welcome mat and leave the stadium. $1.2 billion, 75,000 tons of steel and four years in the planning have come down to this, finally time to cut that ribbon. >> certainly been a long road. and in a matter of hours, the 49ers will be one step closer to

here, namely parking, especially when you've got great america right next door. and then four years ago, voters here passed measure j to help fund supposed to be a $937 million stadium, the price tag guy to $1.2 billion giving fans a state of the art facility that can seat 68,500 people, complete with those large video screens over both end zones, rooftop guard within solar panels and one of the most diverse choices in stadium food, yes, the hamburgers and hot dogs, along with lamb. major league soccer will start there first. that's going to be august 2nd. the first pre-season for the 49ers will be against the broncos here august 17th. and the first regular season game, that'll be against the bears, september 14th, and just think in a couple years from now, we're going to have super bowl 50 here hosted here in the south bay again at the brand new

17 and the rest of your bay overnight road work starting to pick up about 5:00 in most of those spots in your commute direction. there's no problem for the commute as far as most of your travels around the bay will focus on this route, approaching the bay bridge, smooth drive, watch that right approach as we talked with the cash lanes. coming off of the bridge, there was oil spilled eastbound 580 away from that area around cutting boulevard. westbound we're seeing a little flow kicking in right now. commute and also the flashing lights that are picking up oil on the right hand shoulder may be a distraction. there's the golden gate bridge, into and out of the north bay and into and out of san francisco. >> looks good, thanks. the head of general motors is back in the hot seats. what senators really want to know about the faulty ignition switches. new meaning to sticker shock, the bay area city with an average home price of $1 million. and bring the children here. the new push by south bay lawmakers to solve the growing immigration crisis at the border. join nbc bay area and

two major energy firms and a pair of financial institutions. the increase economic pressure is designed to end the insurgency in eastern ukraine that's believed to be backed by the kremlin. local answer to a national crisis, south bay lawmakers want thousands of immigrant children to come to the bay area. the south bay congressional delegation sent a letter to federal authorities saying the children are welcome in santa clara county. yesterday, san jose church packed up boxes with donations for groups in southern california helping the undocumented families. protesters and towns like murrieta greeted them at immigration centers. since october, thousands of kids and mothers have traveled from central america to the u.s. illegally. general motors ceo mary barra will be back on capitol hill. she'll answer more questions about the recall. they want to know more about the

million of car recalls. it's lirnged to more than a dozen deaths. since barra was last in washington, new documents have been uncovered showing gm was fully aware of the flaw. the hearing comes one day after a bim was introduced making it a crime for corporate officers to hide dangers posed by their products. $1 million, that's the median price of a home in san francisco. a new report released by data quick says the median price paid last month for a new or existing home or condo in the city is $1 million for the first time ever. experts say that's because there's little available and cash buyers are will be to pay whatever it takes to snatch up property. median price for the bay area, $618,000. speaking of the real estate market foreclosure rates are at the lowest they've been in years for that and the rest of the news, let's talk to mary thompson, she's live at cnbc

world headquarters, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, scott, as you mentioned more good news about the u.s. housing market. u.s. foreclosure activity dropping in june to the lowest levels since the summer of 2006. that's of course before the housing bubble burst. market watching realty track says foreclosures and auctions dropped 2% in may and 16% from a year ago in june. they say it should continue through the nirs half of next year. foreclosures have reduced the supply of homes on the market and of course that's pushing up prices. the higher prices in the bay area as scott just mentioned. posty day on wednesday, dow notched its 159 record close of the year. the dow rising 77 points, closed at 17,138. nasdaq added nine to close at 4,425. investors were cheering earnings from intel and more merger news. time warner joumped on word that they rejected an $80 million takeover from rupert murdoch and

fox. morgan stanley just started with earnings once you exclude charges, they beat endless forecasts. amazon reportedly testing an ebook rental service. borrowing from the models for online movies and shows. it gives subscribers access to 600,000 titles on any device from 9.99 a month. publishers are worried that book subscriptions, this kind of model may push their customers away from buying the books outright. of course for a veracious reader, it could be nothing but good news. >> sound like fun. mary thovrnson, thank you. there is a way to download books from the library. >> is it? >> it's cool, so it's free, but it's overly complicated. >> okay. maybe they'll clear that up as well. let's see if the skies are clearing. check in with christina. >> we have an overcast start to the day which is a good sign for cool temperatures this afternoon. 63 degrees in san francisco. 63 in oakland to start, and 62 degrees in mountain view.

meanwhile we're at 59 in half-moon bay to kick off your thursday here in san jose. so when we talk about on shore flow, it mean twos things for us. mostly cloudy morning, overcast starts, then we get that cool ocean breeze in the afternoon. and that's what you can expect for today, but we have a really thick marine layer out there. watch out for a little driz this will morning at the immediate coast. we're going to clear out all those clouds before lunchtime, a really comfortable day still seeing a little bit of that midlevel cloud cover, but definitely cutting it off from yesterday. we'll see about a third as much as that low cloud cover, excuse me, the cloud cover as yesterday. than means the humidity is really dropping off. as we head through tonight, sun will set at 8:30. a lot of people like to take off early and enjoy the weekend, taking off friday. if that is you, temperatures will be in the mid-70s in your inland valleys to low 80s, and we're going to hold on to the sweet stride as we get into your friday. santa cruz tomorrow, 70 degrees. comfortable out there. at your local beaches and not

that. the alameda county water district holding a public hearing in fremont to consider fines and drought surcharges to reduce the cost of water. that meeting starts at 6:00 tonight at the water district's board room. meantime a panel of experts in palo alto will discuss the drought and the future the bay area water supply and its cost. that's at 6:30. 4:51, overseas, clean up efforts are under way after a powerful typhoon swept through the phileppines. people are picking up tree and sweeping debris off the streets. widespread power blackouts and flooding forced hundreds of thousands to evacuate. 38 people died, at least eight are still missing. now that typhoon is headed towards china where heavy rains have already killed nearly 20e people -- 20 people. the call girl accused in the death of a tech executive says she didn't do it. alix tichelman pleaded not guilty to the manslaughter kmarges yesterday. a judge also refused to lower her bail from $1.5 million.

prosecutors say video shows tichelman injecting forest hayes with lethal dose of heroin on board his santa cruz yacht last fall. prosecutors say a murder charge could depend on the findings of a renewed investigation into the death of tichelman's former boyfriend in georgia. he also died last year from a heroin overdose. pretty incredible story out of the south bay to tell you about. morgan hill woman is alive because of a freak coincidence. >> car crashed in front of heidi crosser's house. her firefighter husband called 911. moments later, heidi collapsed and suffered a brain an yourism. crews responding to the crash were able to rush her to the stanford medical center. >> we find of feel like this is the story of miracles and the miracle started that night. >> now doctors say having that ambulance and paramedics nearby saved her life. over the past few weeks, she's undergone multiple surgery. her road to recover have i going to be a long one, but doctors

live look this morning at o.co coliseum. this stadium the center of a heated and complicated debate. here's the latest. last night the oakland city council approved a modified version of the ten-year lease agreement to keep the a's at the coliseum. the council said it made minor tweaks to the deal already approved by the coliseum authority earlier this month. the a's though not happy with the changes. if the organization agrees to the modified deal, it would then go to the alameda county board of supervisors for final proovl in a couple of weeks, but it's not clear at all if the a's are going to agree. >> it keeps going back and forth. one we will continue to watch. watching the roadways this morning, still early, 4:56, everybody yawning, stretching, getting ready. >> including us. >> exactly. at least we have no one bumping into things. we're looking at camera, shaking around a little bit, you'll be shaking around if you are atop a roof in emeryville holding on to a pole, that's about it.
