from nbc bay area, this is "today in the bay." right now as the world comes together to remember those killed when malaysia airlines flight 17 was shot down, ukraine and russia are pointing fingers. good morning everyone, it's 4:30, i'm scott mcgrew. >> and i'm kris san chess in for laura garcia-cannon. more on that story in a moment. first we begin with breaking news here at home. car crash in the south bay that killed at least one person and injured four others. happened just before 2:00 this morning on highway 101 at lawrence expressway right on the border of sunny vail and santa

fe. alcohol appears to be a factor in this early morning crash. >> reporter: yeah, sthaert, good morning, we are told that one of the victims who survived this was celebrating her 23rd birthday, and that is why these passengers and driver were out for the night. we are told alcohol is a factor. i'm going to step out of the way, or rather we'll show you video. according to the chp, they were coming off the 101 northbound on lawrence expressway off ramp when they lost control and flipped. what we are told is a honda accord. one of the people was ejected from the car, two of them were taken to the hospital at stanford and one was taken, two were rather taken to valley medical center, but a female in her 20s was killed in all of this. and again we are told the driver is believed to have been drunk during this crash. eventually he will be charged with a dui and eventually likely be charged with a vehicular manslaughter. as we come back out here live,

the outramp will be closed until 7:00 a.m. hopefully not any later than 7:30 according to the chp. that is the latest here. from sunnyville, i'm derek shore, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much. let's check in with mike inouye. the impact got at least one off ramp closed. >> that's right. that's the lawrence expressway from highway 101. we'll get you located in the south bay and talk about your work around here. derek's talking about the deadly crash that happened overnight. we expect that closed for two hours from now. the camera is right where the arrow is. we're going further north at the bordered. as kris mentioned, right here, north 101 getting off the expressway, you use bowers or great america parkway just one exit prior. you'll exit south on to bowers then take scott boulevard over to arkes where it changes names. you can use central expressway, light volume right now.

again 6:30 when we expect that to reopen after the deadly overnight crash, but derek is on shore and he'll give us those updates. i want to show you the bay bridge toll plaza because as 429 we check the live camera showed up backups on both sides of the fast track lanes. now it's just the cash lanes. you see usually we have two of those closed in the morning. still what's going on right now. still another 20 minutes until they open all cash lanes maybe go off to the right if you can, back to you. the world mourning the los of -- loss of 300 people whp that airliner was shot right out of the sky. rescue workers, policemen, even off-duty coal miners combing through the wreckage near the ukraine, russia border. why the u.s. is trying to figure out if any americans are among the dead, we still don't know. ukraine and russian rebels are pointing fingers. for more on the latest

developments, let's turn to stephanie chuang, stephanie. >> reporter: yeah, good morning, scott. ukraine's separatists rebels announced that found most of the black boxes from malaysia airlines flight 17. malaysia will send more than 60 people to the crash site. it's unclear if they have accessed it yet. that is because the scene is controlled by those considered to be the prime suspect. the plane left from amsterdam to kuala lumpur. three hours into the flight, controllers lost contact with that plane, and then came reports of an explosion in the sky above ukraine. very close to the russian border. where that missile came from remains a mystery. ukraine is accused pro-russian separatists. the rebels deny it. and russian president vladimir putin says he blames ukraine saying it is responsible for the wreck in the region. >> northeast likely it was one of the separatists, because don't forget, they shot down a

ukrainian plane. >> i think there's going to be held to pay, and there should be. >> reporter: the wreckage scattered for miles, 298 people were on board. most of whom were from the the netherland other malaysia. this morning a ukrainian officials says the bodies of more than 178 # those on board had been located and will be taken to a government-controlled city north of the crash site. as mentioned, we don't know if any americans were killed. so that is a big question this morning, but authorities are still working to confirm the nationalities of still 20 people who were on board. back to you guys. >> stephanie, we'll look to you for updates, thank you. also dozens of aids researchers and activists are among the dead. the group was headed to one of the largest international meetings on aids being held in melbourne, australia this weekend. the former president of the international aids society was also killed. he was from the netherland. also among the dead, gordon thomas who was the world health organization's spokesperson

based in geneva. president obama spoke with ukrainian president yesterday after the crash. mr. obama told him u.s. experts are willing to help. we should find out later today if the ntsb will travel to the crash site, which remember lies inside disputed territory held by pro-russian forces. there's concern evidence on the ground will be tampered with and there was unconfirmed reports of looting yesterday. well if you're traveling overseas, how do you know if your pilot is taking you over potentially dangerous air space? you could always just call the airline and ask. also make sure you know which airline you're actually going to fly on each leg of your journey. and there's flightaware.com, and it allows you to see the path traveled. the pat traveled the same path every day for the past week. earlier this year, the faa banned u.s. carriers from flying over the disputed areas between russia and ukraine. but other countries and airlines

make their own decisions. >> it's up to the airline to tell pilots, their own pilots we're not going to go there. we're going to take a longer route to avoid the area. that's what the faa did with the u.s. carriers. the question is why the malaysians continued to fly that particular route. >> flight records show the airliner was at about 33,000 feet when it was struck. more details about the missile the u.s. believes shot down that plane. it's called buk. it has a range of up to 70,000 feet, far higher and this the 33,000 feet that jetliner was flying. it takes a well-trained crew to operate the system. the buk was developed by the soviet union in the 50s. defense experts believe ukrainian forces abandoned those buk launch whers they retreated from the area and that's how the rebels potentially got their hands on them. meanwhile, renewed search

for the missing airliner, the other malaysian airliner, flight 370 disappeared back in march. new search is set for next month. nearly 250 people were on board. experts believe it went down off the coast of australia in the southern indian ocean. so far searches by air and sonar scans of the ocean turned up nothing. malaysian airlines have been under heavy scrutiny since the plane vanished with the government providing few answers as to what happened. stay with us for updates on the investigation into the crash as they happen. our coverage continues online as well, nbcbayarea.com. developing news in the middle east as israeli troops march into gaza. it is a major escalation in the conflict in the region which had been limited to air strikes. new video shows israeli forces crossing into gaza already in the first day of the ground conflict, at least 19 palestinians and one israeli soldier have been killed. the move comes after a ten-day air war between israel and

we're looking at the great america parkway, that is the one to worry about, lawrence expressway is the one right here. let me show you the video. we have video of the crash scene. the off-ramp looks like a car went off the roadway, overturned, one person is dead, number of others are injured. derek shore is on scene following this investigation, but that will remain closed for another couple of hours. let's go back to the map. now i got ahead of myself, scott, scott turned to arkez. and take you back into the area. traffic is very light right now, and if it does clear and reopen by 6:30, we should be just fine for the friday morning commute. you know about that off-ramp that's closed, meanwhile the rest of the bay looking nice. and the bay bridge toll plaza, well it was confined over to this left side approach. and now we have that. looks like one of the additional lanes is open. we have one cash lane that's closed. crews are clearing. west 580 to east 80. back to you. >> thank you, mike.

will start cloersing down cannabis clubs throughout the city as tough new restrictions go into effect. about a third of the pot shops will be ordered to close today with more shut downs expected in the coming months. among other things, the new rules to where shops can operate and some restrictions make it impossible for existing shops to stay open. yesterday was the last day for protesters to gather signatures for referendum in an effort to get the rules overturned. restaurants suppliers cicso will have to pay for unsafe food storage practices. nbc bay area investigation last year discovered the trucks dropping off raw meat and milk and other pairishable foods in unrefrigerated sheds. it would be delivered to schools, hospitals, hotels. our report triggered an investigation which filed the lawsuit against the company, the company agreed to settle with the state for $19.4 million. in a statement, the ceo said, we

will accept responsibility for the break down in our system in california. we've taken this opportunity to improve our practices. a burlingame limo company will not have to pay as much for its involvement in a deadly fire on the san ma day you bridge last year. the california public utility reduced are its fine against the company from $20,000 to just $5,000. the fine stems from the deadly fire in may of last year that killed five women on their way to celebrate their friend's wedding. state senator jerry hill called the decision an embarrassment to the state of california. >> the public utilities commission has been so complacent in their relationship with business. it's almost as if they're partners with business rather than regulating business. >> a statement said in part, chp is responsible for vehicle inspections and enforcing the state vehicle code was unable to determine if the vehicle exceeded its weight limit.

82 on the south bay on saturday, 79 on sunday. upper 60s for san francisco, same for the east shore, tri-valley, not too hot this weekend and temperatures will be a touch cooler on sunday than what we're expecting out there for your saturday. we'll tell you what's going on across the bay area and there is a lot to go over. first, i'm going to send it back to you and the rest of the top stories of the day, scott and kris. happening now, a massive typhoon is bearing down on china and vietnam. wind and rain started pelting southern china as the typhoon has left a trail of destruction across the phileppines. 54 people were killed and hours ago it was upgraded to a supertyphoon. the storm is expected to hit on the island, a popular tourist destination. chinese state media says this may be the strong toast hit the area in 40 years. major storms to major wild fires. now there are more evacuations this morning for communities in washington state where a cluster of wild fires continues to

spread. four separate fires started on monday, they are now combined into one large one. a local sheriff says at least 35 homes are burned to the ground and that is this is the worst fire he's seen it in 30 years. and back here in california, the wild fire burning in shasta county can the be called deadly. a body has been found in the burn zone. investigators say it appears he was trying to escape the flaps. the fire started a week ago, its burned more than 17 square miles. evacuation orders in the area have been lifted. still ahead, any minute, we could find out if federal investigators will head to ukraine. an update on that deadly crash, coming up next. and a live look, look at that crystal clear view of the lights and the golden gate bridge, beautiful. they have to move the cones for the morning commute. being friday, we should is have a lighter one. we will talk about the closure in the south bay and further east coming up. nbc bay area wants to help
