"today in the bay." good morning and thanks for joining us, i'm kris sanchez, laura garcia-cannon taking a snooze this morning. >> i'm scott mcgrew. update to breaking news, police say alcohol may have been the cause behind this deadly crash in sunnyville overnight. at least one person was killed, four others injured. this happened on 101 at the lawrence expressway off-ramp. "today in the bay's" derek shore live at the crash scene, and derek, investigators say it was a night out of partying and simply turned deadly. >> reporter: that's right, scott. chp, this many hours later still on the scene here, investigating on the off-ramp. they say it happened just after 2:00 a.m. on this lawrence expressway off-ramp off the 101 north. now police say a honda accord was exiting the expressway at a very high rate of speed, was not able to keep with the curve and lost control. flipping into the embankment, a woman in her 20s was killed and four others were taken to area

hospitals. we're told this was actually a celebration, one of the injured passengers we're told was celebrating her 23rd birthday. >> the surviving female passenger, it was her, last night was her 23rd birthday. we assume that they were coming back from a celebration. also, at the scene, it appears that nobody inside the car had their saebltds on -- seat belts on. >> reporter: at first because of the violent crash, officers say they weren't 100% sure of who the driver was. at this point, they have identified that driver, a male who was taken to the hospital to be treated for injuries, and was likely drinking, possibly drunk during this crash which of course will bring charges of at least dui and if not, some sort of manslaughter charge out here. as we come back out here live, the off-ramp will be closed until at least 7:00 a.m. chp says they are working as quickly as public to get it back open. that's the latest, derek shore, "today in the bay." >> derek, thank you. let's bring in mike inouye.

that off-ramp will be closed for quite some time, how's it affecting the commute? >> we just got the update, instead of 6:30, derek says 7:00 now. half hour as they've pushed it back. you're asking how that affects folks on the drive. we have a crash, and i'll cover that in the full traffic report, here's northbound 101, the lawrence expressway off-ramp will be closed until as derek said, 6:00, closing pass the scene because you see the closure. folks using lawrence expressway taking it south or maybe the gym, we have bowers avenue. great america parkway and powers, that's your alternate. and better lit up and well known signage there as you travel south to get you around back up to the lawrence expressway. we'll track that, but so far, no slowing. >> back to you. this morning new details out of ukraine where crews are trying to identify dozens of victims from the malaysia air flight shot down. emergency workers, police officers, and even civilians are now searching through the wreckage as we speak. witnesses say the the crash site

is sprawled out, nearly six hours away from the main wreck ablg site. this is proof that the aircraft broke up before it hit the ground. >> 298 people were on board, the u.s. government says a surface to air missile struck the plane as it was flying 33,000 feet above the ground. u.s. officials still trying to figure out where that missile came from. investigators from around the world are on their way to ukraine to see damage for themselves, and stephanie chuang monitoring the situation, tell us the latest you're hearing. >> reporter: yeah good morning scott and kris, the key point is about access to the evidence. in the last half hour, we have learned that pro-russia rebels are changing their tune. first they found most of the blook boxes from the flight. now a leader is saying no black boxes have been found. again, very different. now the wreckage scattered from miles around. there's a lot of debris to dig through. the question is still where did that missile come from. and this morning, russia's foreign minister spoke saying

it's proven than ukraine deliberately trying to attack russian territory. russia could carry out sfrieks back, but he added it appeared to be an access from unprofessional ukrainian operations. ukraine's saying there's no chance the missile used came from the ukrainian military. >> this was a miss take, and therefore more likely -- mistake and therefore more like lay separatist shoot down with modern equipment they didn't understand. >> what should we be doing against the separatist assuming that's who fired this missile? >> reporter: there were 298 people on board, most of whom were from the netherlands as well as malaysia. the bodies of more than 180 of those on board had been located and they will be taken to a government-controlled city north of the crash site. authorities still working to confirm the nationalities of at least 20 passengers, and we don't know if any of them were americans. so that's obviously top priority as well. >> thank you very much, steph. well dozens of world

renowned aids rernlers and activists were also on board that plane when it went down. than includes joep lange. he was from the netherlands. also among the dead, glenn thomas who was a world health organization spokesperson based in geneva. the group was headed to one of the largest international meetings on aids being held this weekend in australia. family members gathered at the airport in amsterdam and were quickly whisked away from reporters to a hotel. their loved ones on flight 17 were from all over the globe. malaysia, germany, the u.k., but most of them on board, 154 people were from the netherlands. one woman holder her baby was supposed to be on that flight, she was late and just missed it. >> i'm feeling physically sick. i'm just thinking, i feel like i've been given a second chance.

>> the woman said she is grateful that she will see her family again. if you are traveling overseas, how do you know if your pilot is taking you over potentially dangerous air space? for that, let's turn to "today in the bay's" nannette miranda who is live outside sfo. some of us take for granted that our airline is going to take the safest route, that's not necessarily true. >> reporter: that's right. and the wake of the shoot down, malaysia airlines said on its website that it'll be taking alternative routes on flights to and from europe and it appears the other airlines are taking similar steps. back on april 3rd, the faa and the international civil aviation organization warned pilots of quote the possible existence of serious risk to the risk of international flights. then last week ukrainian officials warned pilots to not fly above eastern ukraine between 26,000 and 32,000 flights. malaysia flight 17 was shot down at 33,000 feet. radar data shows singapore

airlines were within 256 kilometers of the malaysia jet when the missile hit. but not long after that, many airlines avoided the area. the flight goes over questionable areas call the airline and ask and know which airline you'll have on each leg because many airlines partner with other airlines on certain routes. flightaware.com is an additional resource showing the path traveled by previous flights. >> it's up to the airline to tell pilots, their own pilots, we're not going to go there. we're not flying this route. we're going to take a longer route to avoid this area. that's what the faa did with the u.s. carriers. the question is why the malaysians continued to fly that particular route. >> reporter: some aviation experts believe cash-strapped malaysia airlines took the route over ukraine to save min. it's the short -- money. it's the shortest route from kuala lumpur to amsterdam and therefore saved on fuel cost.

today and also beautiful conditions for those of you who live or work in the tri-valley, pleasant today. 84 degrees, pleasanton living up to the name. let's check your drive and see how good you're doing in that department, here's mike. overall, standard. good right now, but we will focus on the south bay where we have this, the closure of the lawrence expressway off-ramp from northbound 101 because of a deadly crash that happened overnight. we'll show you video, derek shore is out there, he's reporting the update, they don't expect to have this open until 7:00 a.m. because inform deadly crash. the car went off the roadway. you see there's no guardrail there and so the investigation continues there. back to the maps once again, you have your alternate because you heard me, you can get off one exit early, bower south to scott. back over to lawrence expressway. we don't have a lot of slowing there. we don't have a lot of businesses on lawrence expressway, that is a popular cut through between 237 and 10 #. keep that in mind possibly until 7:00 a.m. crash 880 at alameda, but it's over on the shoulder. crash west 580, greenville, a

now to the crisis in the middle east where israeli troops are now in the gaza strip. illumination flairs were shot over gaza city overnight where nearly two million palestinians

lived. the flairs ewe used to help israel know where to target. israel says the military so fast necessary, claiming militants are using tunnels to sneak up and attack israeli towns. troops are going into gaza to route out the tunnels dug by hamas in georgia accident happen. it could last as long as two weeks. the israeli army released this video overnight showing a tank entering the gaza strip. in it you can hear a commander telling the troops, quote, your nation is behind you and the terrorists from hah has are -- hamas are ahead of you. i have trust in you, go ahead, good luck. the fighting is intense, israeli's defense forces say that it has struck about 100 targets in the gaza strip since midnight. among them, nine tunnels and 15 rocket launchers. since this ground operation began nearly 20 palestinians and one israeli soldier have been killed. hamas promised to make israel

pay for this attack. in the past ten days, israel has carried out more than 2,000 air strikes in gaza. this is the first time israel has sent ground troops in in nearly five years. quick update to the top story this morning. malaysian airlines flight shot down over ukraine flying over war torn eastern ukraine when it went down yesterday. all 298 people on board are presumed dead. pro-russian separatists control that region where the plane went down. they say they have recovered, maybe the plane's black boxes and are considering what to do with them. the u.s. officials believe the plane was brought down by a russian surface to air missile. but it's not clear who fired it. the situation in ukraine and the unrest in the middle east has sent stock markets tumbling. could be another volatile day on wall street for the latest, let's turn to havrpton pierceson. >> hey scott, we do have futures

are going to have that thick fog, that really strong on shore flow right at the immediate coast, but hey, inland, we are going to get the benefits of all that low cloud cover, westerly flow coming back. for us, it means the cool ocean breeze, natural ac stays on. comfortable weekend coming your way. then next week, we are going to warm you up, but gradually. no major extremes coming your way. your temperatures are going to stay rather level. we hit that sweet stride. 7 along the peninsula. 74 on the east shore and 66 degrees, that's it today in san francisco, but that's not bad. and even out in the hot spots in the tri-valley, temperatures are only going to be in the mid-80s. so right about at average for you. as we get into this afternoon. live look at oakland, here shows you we actually have a pretty clear sky to start, that's going to change as we progress throughout the next few hours and that onshore flow intensifies. if you want to head out of town this weekend, couple notes for you heading down into southern california should be okay. if you wanted to hit tahoe, we have a couple things to point

we're watching this north 101, the closure at the off-ramp, you'll exit once before there. to get over past a deadly crash. the investigation continues there at the off-ramp, and derek shore continues with his following of that. he'll give us the update at 7:00 a.m. for the latest on the opening for that ramp. the tri-valley typical build over here, crash at greenville is on the shoulder as to the distraction out pot of pass. and watching roads and rails, no delays reported. we just picked that to show you guys, back to you. >> mike, thank you. learning more about 19-year-old jamie ramos. the man accused and arrested for his role in a deadly bank robbery and chase and shootout in stockton. in this video, you can see him being led in handcuffs to a patrol car. his capture came after an hour long high speed chase with police. he and two other suspects who were killed, are all documented gang members. meanwhile, two of the three hostages either jumpedthe car or were thrown out during

the chase. the third was killed. now days later, the community trying to make sense of what happened. >> i don't understand why this ha to happen. why she had to be the one to have this happen to her. >> she went into the bank to make a quick transaction as her 12-year-old daughter waited in the car. san jose will close down cannabis throughouts city as tough new restrictions go into effect today. about a third of the pot shops will be ordered to close today with more shut down in the coming months. among other things, rules limit where pot shops can operate and pot owners say that the restrictions make it impossible to stay in business. yesterday was the last day for protesters to gather signatures for a referendum in an effort to the get those rules overturned. well it's 5:22, new hope in the efforts to keep the a's in oakland. what the team's owner is now saying.

you're watching "today in the bay." and a live look for you at o.co. the coliseum authority meeting in just a few hours to talk about the lease extension. this will be the first meeting since oakland city council passed an amended agreement. the amended lease agreement isn't sitting well with a's owner lou wolf, but apparently he's willing to give the changes a look. that is a much different attitude from a few days ago when the a's said a majority of the changes were unacceptable. wolf said his change of heart comes after connell woman rebecca capland called him and zd him to take a look at the deal. he tells the times he is willing to move forward and is still looking at a new a's ball park in oakland. speaking of the a's, the team will spend the weekend celebrating the 25th anniversary of its 1989 world series win, that's the one where the a's beat the giants. today there will be an autographed session.

for laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm skoout mcgrew. top story of the morning, investigators trying to figure out who shot down a commercial plane over ukraine. almost 300 people were killed. emergency screws were still on scene trying to recover all the bodies. we'll have a live report in just a few minutes. we're also keeping our eye on the middle east. israel invading the gaza strip overnight. more than 100 air sfrieks and near -- strikes and nearly two dozen killed. the latest on the violence inless than ten minutes. but first we start with breaking news here at home. deadly crash overnight is slowing down the early morning commute. at least one person was killed, four others injured. this happened at highway 101 at lawrence expressway's off-ramp on the border. sunnyville and santa clara. derek shore is live at the crash scene, alcohol may be to blame, but you were saying no one was wearing seat belts. >> reporter: that's right, and because this is being called a criminal investigation, chp being very thorough with that

investigation, and keeping the off-ramp shut down at this hour. now officers say sadly the people in this car were out celebrating a birthday, on their way home when they crashed. investigators believe some time after 2:00, the honda accord was exiting 101 north on to the lawrence expressway off-ramp but was apparently going very fast, unable to maneuver the curve, lost control and flipped. killing one woman in her 20s, four other people sent to the hospital. no one had their seat belt on. >> this is a criminal investigation, speed is definitely a factor, and unfortunately at this time, alcohol is a factor also. >> reporter: officers say the group was celebrating one of the passenger's 23rd birthdays, it's unclear where they were coming from. she is among the injured. not the victim who passed away. as you heard the chp telling us, they believe the driver, a male, was not sober at the time of the crash and say he will likely be facing charges. now the off-ramp is shut down,

remains shut down until at least 7:00 a.m., and we'll give you more information now with mike as he takes a look at traffic, mike. >> thanks derek. as you just heard derek say, the off-ramp at lawrence expressway off of northbound 101 expected to be closed until 7:00. this could affect your morning commute. let me get you located here northbound out of san jose. san jose is the first spot that shows a slow down. you can get around it right now by taking one exit before you get there. prior to there, great america parkway to bowers, back on to lawrence expressway, and they it gets you past the scene. there aren't major google, ya hoob -- yahoo, further north of here and the like, again that's in sunnynyville. at least until 7:00, we'll track it, back to you. now to the tragedy in ukraine. families all over the world remembering loved ones lost bh malaysian air flight -- when malaysian air flight 17 was shot down. wreckage is spread over a number of miles.

emergency crews scouring the area looking for the 12 flight recorders that were on the plane, hoping one of them can offer more answers. "today in the bay's" stephanie chuang joins us now, and stephanie, new updates coming in throughout the morning. >> reporter: good morning, scott. pro-russia rebels said they found most of the black boxes from malaysian airlines flight 17. in the last hour, a leader said they had not found any black boxes. although we are hearing that rescue workers reportedly found two. malaysia says it will send more than 60 people from the crash site. it's still unclear whether international investigators have accessed it yet. this scene is controlled by the separatists rebels who many consider to be the prime suspects. the question of course, where did the missile come from? ukrainian foreign minister reportedly says his country did not have those missiles in the area and said none had been seized by rebel fighters in recent weeks either which would point the finger at the missile coming from russia. but vladimir putin puts the blame on ukraine says it is

responsible for the unrest and fighting in the region. >> most likely it was one of the separatists, because don't forget, they shot down a ukrainian plane. >> if it is results of the separatists or russian actions mistakingly believing this was a ukrainian car plane. i think there's going to be hell to pay. >> most the passengers on board were from the netherland or malaysia. >> reporter: the bodies of more than 180 of those on board had been located and will be taken to a government-controlled city north of the crash site. we don't know if any americans were killed still. although authorities are still looking to confirm the nationalities of 20 of people who were passengers. >> stephanie, so many tragedies in that bali book sitting on the ground breaks my heart. there's a woman, she's had an uncredibly lucky twifs fate. this is not the only malaysian airlines flight where she lost somebody. also where somebody disappeared.

>> reporter: it's incredible, kayly lost her brother and her sister-in-law when flight 370, the one that vanished back in march, got so much coverage, still a lot of mystery there, she's learned now that her step-daughter was one of the passengers on flight 17 who was killed. so of course, as you can imagine, the family just in incredible grief. family saying this has raped thinker guts out again, scott. >> awful. stephanie, thank you for bringing us updates. we are also learning dozens of world renowned aids researchers and activists are among the dead. the group was heading to one of the largest international meetings on aids being held in melbourne, australia, this weekend. the foormer president of the international aids society was also killed. he was from the netherland, also among the dead, glenn thomas, he was the world health organization's spokesperson based in geneva. more details now about the missile that the u.s. believes shot down that plane. it's a sophisticated missile system called buk.

it has a range of up to 70,000 feet. far higher than the 33,000 feet the jetliner was flying. takes a very well-trained crew to operate the system. the buk launchers developed by the soviet union back in the '70's, but they remain in use across the region by both sides. defense experts believe ukrainian forces might have abandoned buk launchers which they retreated from the area, and perhaps the rebels got their hands on them. so if you are traveling overseas, how do you know if your pilot is potentially flying you over dangerous air space? you can always call the airline and ske. but make sure you know which airline you'll have on each leg of your journey, then visit flightaware.com. than allows you to see the path traveled by the previous flight. for example, the plane that was shot double traveled the same path every day in the last week. coming up in 30 minutes, nannette miranda will have more details on what you can do to stay informed while you're in the air and on the ground.

plus why the pilots of the shot down plane thought they were safe flying over that part of ukraine. a burlingame limo company will not have to pay as much for its involvement in a deadly fire on the bridge last year. the california public utilities commission reduced its fine against the company from $20,000 to just $5,000. the fine stems from the deadly fire in may of last year that killed five women on their way to a wedding party. jerry hill called the decision an embarrassment to the state of california. >> the public utilities commission has been so complacent in their relationship with business, it's almost. they're partners with business rather than regulating business. >> the cpuc released a statement saying in part of the chp, which is responsible for vehicle inspections and enforcing state vehicle code was unable to determine if the vehicle exceeded rather its weight limit. meanwhile, the san mateo district attorney found there

the plane crashed in eastern ukraine, u.s. intelligence officials say malaysia airlines flight 17 was shot down by a surface to air missile. the crash site is said to cover a number of miles, it's in disputed territory controlled by pro-russian separatists who say they had nothing to do with it.

"today in the bay's" brian moore is live in washington, president obama has offered brian, the services of the ntsb and fbi, good morning. >> reporter: scott, the latest word, the ntsb could announce if it's sending a go team to eastern ukraine. that is just one level the united states government is operating on right now. first of all, trying to figure out whether any u.s. citizens were aboard, confirming that, offering the services of the ntsb and the fbi. but intelligence may be the key here. u.s. satellites reportedly picked up a missile launched and tracked it right to impact. the evidence and analysis could be critical in making a case to the world. what will washington do if russia was involved, if the pro-russian separatists were involved, weather it's a -- whether it's a mistake or not. john mccain best summed up the move here in washington. while officials are waiting to see, he says if it was the separatists, if it was the

been limited to air strikes. new video from overnight shows israeli forces crossing into gaza, already in the first day of the ground conflict, at least 19 palestinians and one israeli soldier was killed. the move comes after a ten-day war, air war between israel and hamas. israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu says they're targeting a network of understood ground tunnels used by hamas. the ground invasion is not overthrowing the group. they stepped up the attack after hamas refused to have a ceasefire. a new $72 million high-tech water plant is opening up in alvito. the purification center will produce billions of gallons of purified, recycled water for santa clara county. right now it can only be used for things like watering the grass at parks. water officials hope to double the use of that kind of water over the next decade.
