we'll check in with meteorologist christina loren in just a few minutes. for your microclimate forecast. first to a developing story, secretary of state john kerry will arrive in cairo this morning where he will push for a ceasefire between israel and hamas. the number of dead in the gaza strip now more than 500. violence peeked yesterday as more than 70 palestinians and 30 israeli soldiers were killed including two israeli americans. among the two people killed, two americans who were serving as soldiers in the israel defense force. family and friends gathered in southern california last night to remember max stineburg. he was a sharp shooter in the military, 21-year-old from texas was also killed. meanwhile, one neighborhood in gaza where more than 70 people were killed yesterday worked through chaos. on the drive in the city, nbc cameras captured survivors trying to get out with whatever they could. of course gaza is totally isolated, so there's nowhere for them to go.

even so, they are the lucky ones, the morgue is if illed to capacity -- filled to capacity. both sides of the middle east conflict have strong support here in the bay area. yesterday thousands of people rallied for peace. >> we want peace. that's what we want. we to stable, quiet, for our people, quiet will be met with quiet, wed don't want anything from gaza. >> massers can and you're like what can i do about this? we come to the protest to show our emotions and solidarity with the palestinian people. >> at one point, the rally marched down market street. people were carrying boxes made to look like coffins. turning now to the deadly plane crash in ukraine, the bodies of the victims are in the pros of being moved, taking -- process of being moved, by train cars. access is being limited. we are joined, a vote to try to get access by the u.n. set for today. >> unfortunately, it appears this morning that it continues to be limited. the access to that major crash

site. now we are expecting the u.n. security council to vote later today on a resolution to demand international access to the huge debris field which is still under the control of pro-russian separatists. the same group of rebels suspected of shooting down the boeing 777 down in eastern ukraine. bodies of 298 victims of malaysia flight 17 are in the process of being moved. brought to refrigerated taken cars parked in the nearby town. the associated press is also reporting cranes have been brought in by rebels who are moving parts of plane wreckage and retrieving the black box hampering any forensic investigation. the australian prime minister says the rebels must step aside. >> there's no doubt that at the moment, the site is under the control of the russian-backed rebels. and given the almost certain

copability of the russian-backed rebels in the downing of the aircraft having those people in control of the site is a little like leaving criminals in control of a crime scene. >> meanwhile secretary of state john kerry said yesterday on the morning talk shows the is receiving information that points districtly at the separatists -- directly at the separatists behind the attack. >> we picked up the imagery of this launch. we know the trat jekt ri. we know where it came from. >> a bit of positive news, the dutch prime minister saying that some experts have been given access to the victim's remains in attempt to identify them and get them back to families. again we are expecting that u.n. security council vote a little bit later on today. >> all right, derek shore, thank you so much. meanwhile the brother of one of the men spoke to nbc, drew ryder of minnesota lost his brother and sister-in-law in the tragedy. the couple were on a trip through europe and were flying home to australia on malaysia

air flight 17. he didn't know the couple was even on the flight until he got a call from his ung. >> he could hardly speak as you can imagine and said your brother and sister-in-law were on that train. incredibly outgoing, veried a venn chour reduce, wanted to conquer the world. yavon kept him in check if you know what i mean. they were just so suited for each other. >> the couple is survived by children and five grandchildren. we'll continue to cover this story all morning long, crews are continuing to search the rescue, the wreckage rather for the remain of the missing, but as derek points out, the wrong crews will have another live update in less than a half hour. new this morning, police are investigating some sort of attack in san jose that sent one man to the hospital, but officers say the scene was so chaotic, it's too early to tell whether it was a stabbing or a shooting. it happened overnight near eden

avenue. investigators say when they got there, they found the victim on the ground and think he or she may have crawled from an apartment complex. police say they have not arrested anyone, and do not have any good leads at this point. starting today, some people living in one bay area county will have to pay more for water. "today in the bay's" bob redell live in alameda county, bob, this is weird because it comes as the agency admits that people are doing a good job of conserving water. >> reporter: you are correct. the alameda county water district asked its more than 300,000 customers to cut back on their water usage because of the drought, and they did. they cut back by 20% of a as you can imagine, the revenue went down because people weren't using as much water. the district now has a budget short fall of $15 million, so starting today, customers will have to pay extra for their water to help make up the difference, something that the board passed last week.

the graphic will give you a good idea what have break down is. customers who live in houses, they won't pay anything extra on the first 15 units of water, anything above that, up to 30 units will be billed an extra $1.48 per unit, and above that $2 per unit and businesses and apartment dwellers, they'll pay an extra 40 cents, six cents per unit regardless of how many units they use. reporting live here in alameda county, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> all adds up, thank you very much, bob. let's join christina loren with a look at possible free water coming out of the school. >> only for parts of the bay area, only for parts, unfortunately, scott and kris, good monday morning to you. it's the north bay, we'll throw in all of those wine crops. desperately a place where we need it. i can tell you right now as we head throughout the day, we're welcome down with -- almost done with this. let me show you what we are expecting. as we head through 6:20, right after 6:00 a.m., all the

moisture is going to press north up to heelsburg, and then as we head throughout the morning hours, it'll continue to push north and fall apart. we have had some pretty decent rainfall totals, especially in tahoe and yosemite. there was flash flooding yesterday. driven by the thunderstorms. as we head throughout the day today, very slight chance of thunderstorms, better chance of the stray cells, little rain showers to come through over the course of the morning, then by about 10:00, we're going to close that window, and you can open yours up, we'll have air quality as a result of that coming through. over mount hamilton, looking down at this beautiful city, san jose this morning, beautiful start here. little bit of low cloud cover, but really, not much. enough to keep us cool later today. 81 degrees is the forecasted high here in the south bay. i want to give you a preview of where we are headed. for the next couple of days, we're going to hold on to temperatures just a little bit below average. and then we're going to boost those numbers right back above average and potentially bring in the tim digits through your

weekend. we'll talk about what's causing these changes and i'll let you know who picked up the most rain over the course of the weekend into this morning. might just blow your mind. first, let's check your drive, mike inouye. >> prepare for your mind to be blown. i did mess up though, shocker, no, we're looking at eastbound instead of it westbound. update came in, it's eastbound 70. not towards the benicia bring, but away from it. car went off the roadway, wedge is what i'm hearing. no major injuries. something may be wedged down in a gully and they have to pull it out. meanwhile the bridges moving smoothly from the north bay to the east bay, and no problems through the east bay. easy flow of traffic. we'll take you over towards the city as san francisco is southbound 101 at par, reports of a slowing there. speed around the bay look really good. here's a nice shot of west 580 coming through the el charro area, typical pattern already.

vta is going to hold a pair of meetings today and talk about the future of transit in santa clara county among the topics, bart extension to san jose and express lanes on 237 and 101. both meet lgs take place at the santa clara city hall council chambers. second, 5:30 this evening. cal train is getting an upgrade this morning and it'll be music to riders ears. >> stephanie chuang joins us live in san francisco, crews given a pa system a much needed boost. >> reporter: yeah, that's right, good morning, scott and kris. and cal train saying this isn't about the customer experience, but it's also about safety. now we're at 22nd street station here in san francisco, and work is set to begin at 1:00 in the morning, by the time we got here before 4:00 it wrapped up. improvements to the pa system starts at this station, and then goes south. so next is south san francisco station and then sunny valley

and finally nor san jose. that last project in the south bay is set for completion in late december or early january. it was back in 2009 when a report revealed that the pa systems at these four stations were both unreliable as well as inadequate. not only has it impacted the customer experience, but cal train says the pa systems are of course used to provide critical service and safety information. in addition to, you know, passengers not being able to hear announcements. now the work again begins today. here at the 22nd street station in san francisco, crews from 1:00 to 4:00 in the morning. hours of work for the other three stations are set to run from 7:00 in the morning until 5:00 at night. that will span six months. and also back here at the 22nd street station, there's one other improvement. there are no visual message signs to tell you what train, where it's going, what time. that's something else that's headed here, again, like you said, music to the riders ears of course. live in sfraebs this morning,

today. he is expected to attend a pretrial conference this afternoon. witnesses say last september he drove over a mother while she was laying on the grass with her baby at halle park. investigators say the man then just drove away. the child was not hurt. he was fired from his job, he has pleaded not guilty. china suspended operations at a shanghai company accused of selling expired chicken and beef to mcdonalds and kfc. the company was reportedly selling meat to mcdonalds and yum brands, they run kfc and pizza hut. it reportedly supplied at restaurants in china. yum brands and mcdonalds say they stopped orders from that company and are current ligating. no word on how long this has been going on or if anyone actually ate the expired meat. one of the richest men in the world is calling for a shorter workweek. dominic chu live with that and the trading, good morning, dominic. >> reporter: good morning, scott. so futures are lower this

morning as scotts come off a rocky week last week. they fell sharply remember on thursday on that geopolitical news in ukraine and the middle east. but friday's rally pushed stocks back into positive territory, it's a huge week for the corporate earnings story as a dozen dow stocks and more than a quarter of the s&p 500 are going to report results. dow rising 123 points on friday to 17,100 and the nasdaq adding 68 points to 4432. like you said the world's second richest man says we're doing it all wrong. carlos flem, he's calling for a three-day workweek. now the mexican media mogul says instead of retiring at 50 or 60, we should work longer, but take more time off. now the 74-year-old believes that the world would create really a healthier and more productive work force but doing sufficient hours. he is putting his money where his mouth is, at his phone company, he's implemented a voluntary plan where employees who are eligible to retire can

continues to grow. # 5 degrees in oakland. 234e6 san francisco, and so does the population of this great state of california. here in the bay area, we have the best weather across the entire nation over the weekend, we're going to hold on that that weather for the next couple days. we're going to get rid of the muggy conditions and the shower activity which really impacted places on the east side of the bay area and the north side over the weekend. although we did have showers this morning in san francisco and yesterday that was the case as well. places in tahoe picked over an inch of rain over the weekend. and that is a significant total. i've already been tracking showers, probably more days this month in july than all of april. which is really good news for us here in the bay area. keep the hillsides nice and moist and that fire threat doesn't become as significant later on in the week though, high pressure builds in, we dry out, and that's when we are watching for that. really watching the showers right now. they're headed north, about 6:00, they'll be in heelsburg, same thing for windsor, then throughout the day today,

temperatures are going to be comfortable. just like yesterday, just a little bit warmer. 81 degrees through the south bay, 68 degrees today in san francisco, getting into the next couple of days, you can see here staying level. significant climb between wednesday and thursday. you'll notice this in the extreme east bay, then friday and the weekend, closer to triple digits as high pressure takes control. overall, first three days through wednesday, perfection, mike inouye, over to you. perfection to traffic, thanks christina. what a letdown. it's not so bad. not perfection, but nice. southbound 101 right around paw, i told you there was a accident report and slow lanes. slowing south of the 280 transition. we'll let you know. meanwhile the approach to the bay bridge and the nice easy drive, no backup at the toll plaza. we'll show you the volume of traffic. couple of cars waiting right

now. looks like they have to reopen one of the cash lanes, that's about it. i'll bring the camera around to make sure there's no other issues. we'll show you where the build starts coming in towards the dublin interchange, slowing, no big deal. you have your build out of the west 84 as you head in towards the yay, we have that traditional slowing for that portion in through livermore and sunol, smooth drive there. rest of the bay pick your path, easy drive. you're close to the speed limit around the bay, and good stuff, including the dumbarton and san mateo. new video just in, at least 100 homes evacuated after a train derailed in wisconsin overnight, spilling several thousand gallons of diesel fuel. it happened about 35 miles northwest of milwaukee. the city's fire chief says three engines and ten rail cars derailed. two people were hurt, they're not seriously though. preliminary reports show one of the companies trains was going south when it hit cars on

another train. firefighters are hoping for cooler, damper weather moving into central washington that will help them contain one of the biggest fires this state has ever seen. more than 150 homes have now been destroyed and one person has died because of this fire. firefighters say the man suffered a heart attack while trying to save his home. days of lightning strikes sparked four separate wild fires, they then merged into one monster inferno covering 467 square miles. that's two and a half times the size of the city of the entire san jose. bay area red cross volunteers are now in washington helping people who lost their homes there. many of them had little or no time to collect their things before being told to leave. home is teetering on the edge of a sink hole in florida. the home's owner allowed back in to collect things. this is her front yard, 50 miles north of tampa. it's about 40 by 40 feet. nobody hurt. crews will be out to check the

sink hole and decide what to do about it. hollywood is being remembering james garner this morning, the 86-year-old actor was found dead in his los angeles home late saturday night. police say he died of natural causes. garner is best remembered as the dry witted gambled in maverick, but also found success as a smooth talking private eye in the rockford files. later years, he touched a new audience for the notebook. he was a korean war veteran and a purple heart recipient. >> i did not know that. 5:22, the vet that shows a fur's -- bet that the shows a father's confidence does not go unrewarded. the story you have to hear.

keeping things nice and cool to start this morning. shark! >> the movie jaws was all about sharks driving swimmers away from the beach, but it turns out at cape kod, sharks are driving them to the beach. there are shark t-shirts, jaws is playing at the local movie theater, boat tours taking people into the water. great whites are like the area because there's a large population of gray seals. some shops report sales revenue have increased five fold. >> scary once, but now it looks silly. >> yeah, see through the lenses 25 years ago. speaking of 25 years of age, rory mcilroy is one of the young toast win the british open. that is something his father was counting on. >> ten years ago, rory's father placed a bet that his son would win the british open before he turned 26. putting down 200 pounds on 500-1

drops as folks are driving around in that neck of the woods. we'll check in with christina loren in just a few moments. developing now in the middle east, secretary of state john kerry will arrive in cairo this morning, he'll push for a ceasefire between israel and hamas. the number of dead in the gaza strip now more than 500. violence peaking yesterday as more than 70 palestinians and 13 israeli soldiers were killed including two israeli-americans. one a california native, max stinburg lived in los angeles. last night friends and family held a small vigil until southern california to honor the young man. he volunteered to join the israeli army last year. the family traveling to israel later today to lay him to rest. we'll continue to follow developing news out of gaza. in ten minutes, we'll go live to washington with what the white house is doing about the crisis in the middle east. and turning now to that deadly plane crash in ukraine. international investigators still only have limited access

vigil will be held tomorrow to commemorate their lives. 20,000 people showed up yesterday morning to participate in the aids walk in san francisco. it is the states largest aids fundraiser. organizers say the walk is usually bitter sweet because it celebrates advances made against the disease, but also remembers those who have been killed by aids. some people we talked with said this year was especially difficult, and dedicated the walk to the memory of those who died on board malaysia airlines flight 17. we will continue to update this story throughout the morning, keep you updated on any developments in the investigation. meanti meantime, head to nbcbayarea.com for the latest information. surviving suspect from last week's bank robbery and shootout in stockton will make his first court appearance today and prosecutors plan to charge him with triple murder. the new charges will make 19-year-old jamie ray moes eligible for the death penalty. it may include 22 counts of attempted murder of a police officer, investigators say at least one bank robber who died

in the gun battle robbed the very same bank back in january. two suspects were killed in this case along with a hostage in that hour-long chase. after last week's robbery. new this morning, man is recovering after he was shot in the head several times in loren city. this happened near donohue street and drake avenue. that victim understood went surgery last night. -- underwent surgery last night. but it's unclear the condition this morning. after the victim was shot, he actually walked a block or two before he got help. no word on a motive or nor whether investigators have a suspect in mind. talk about a frustrating weekend for people living in one bay area apartment complex. water's been out since friday. bob redell live outside the apartments in pleasanton, they're having their own kind of drought. >> reporter: they are, not the kind anyone wants to have to go with. it went out at 2:00 on friday. the waterline broke here at a spring house apartment, saw stone ridge drive, fairly large complex, appears to have roughly

300 units here. and according to people we spoken to, residents here, there were workers trying to fix the waterline. they actually did have it fixed at one point yesterday on sunday for about an hour, but then it busted again. so they are again in the same situation, no water, and its been frustrating because of the apartment complex according to a couple residents, given on a gallon of water, they've been going without showers. some have been going to pool, getting water from the pool and putting it in the toilet to flush the toilet. and of course, the issue of when is this going to finally be resolved? they stopped work last night leaving residents wondering when are we going to get water back on? how's your wife holding up? >> she's mad. because of the water. but like i said, we're staying with our friends and take a shower there. >> reporter: how much longer can you do this before you -- >> a couple days.

that's it. >> reporter: now as daniel flores was on his way to work this morning, and he did say that he's enjoyed living here at the spring house apartments in pleasanton for the time he's been here, but of course this has been very frustrating. we did try to reach the management on site, and their corporate headquarters outside of the state, but as you can imagine, it is afterhours, all we received were anxious machines. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> all right bob, thank you. sticking to alameda county, today's the day water price goes up for customer rs of the alameda county water district. people there did such a great job saving water in the drought. it meantless water for the water agency. than caused a short fall. bottom line folks, they are raising your rates. and now, meteorologist christina loren has some sprinkles in the forecast, but probably not enough for those folks to turn off sprinklers altogether. >> maybe up in the north bay you're okay to do so.

loren county this morning, you picked up.05 of an inch which is a fair amount. and enough to keep your lawn nice and moist for today. also we have a strong onshore flow coming in and the fog will generate drizzle tomorrow as well. everywhere to the south of the golden gate bridge and even in the east bay at this point, that shower activity has subsided, but look at this, petaluma still getting decent rainfall here. all of this is heading north toward santa rosa throughout the next half hour. we'll be tracking the showers for you as long as they're on the radar, but that is going to be very short lived. as we head throughout about 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. expecting a clear radar. right now san francisco, beautiful start to the day. pacifica showing you that iconic fog, still though the coastal mountain holding back the fog throughout next couple of hours. we'll see the fingers of fog roll over the coastal mountains. onshore flow is returning and that means the bay area weather pattern will be more like usual as we head throughout the first threw days of the week. san jose, look at this, shaping

a story developing by the minute in the middle east. palestinian health official claims israel tank shells struck a central gaza hospital killing four people, wounding another 60. this news coming down within the last ten minutes, official says the shells hit the administration building, the icu, and the surgery department. "today in the bay's" danielle lee is live in washington d.c., and danielle, secretary of state john kerry is headed to cairo hoping to broker a peace between two sides, but when you're talking about hitting a hospital, that's got to escalate things. >> reporter: kris, it really is a tense and concerning situation right now. and we're expecting secretary of state john kerry do arrive -- to arrive in cairo shortly. the goal here is to investigate as you said a truce. as we see now, two weeks of fighting. and as the death toll climbs, we've seen video of the damage from one air strike into the gaza strip where more than two dozen people from the same family were taken out.

hundreds of palestinians killed. tens of thousands have fled their homes. israel has also lost troops 18, as well as two civilians and among those killed two americans fighting on what have of israel. israeli army released video what have they say are militants trying to access israel through these tunnels that they're trying to close off. they've been trying to close off these tunnels to protect israelis who have also been under the constant threat of missiles and living in fear. the goal here is to try to get a ceasefire, right now israel is willing to agree to the terms that were brought up in november, 2012, but hamas is still not willing to do so. so there's growing concern here in washington, even as the administration supports israel, defending itself about the growing death toll and the impact that that's really going to have. live in washington, i'm danielle lee, kris back to you. >> thank you, we'll continue to monitor, danielle. happening now, typhoon moving across asia this morning leaving destruction in its path.

2 people are dead, four others missing in vietnam after flooding and landslides. nearly 2,000 homes have been evacuated. now the same typhoon killed at least 77 people in the phileppines last week, 17 people in china over the weekend. new this morning, virgin atlantic flight from shanghai to london was forced to land in siberia. spokesperson for the airline says the plane had a technical issue, landing as a precaution. one of the 300 passengers on board is american screen writer dustin lance black. he posted this video on facebook showing the plane dumping fuel. this is a normal thing that happens before an emergency landing. right now the plane on the runway being examined, virgin atlantic says the passengers are being taken care of by the cabin crew. happening today, cal train begins work on improving its public announcement systems across the bay area. but it's about more than improving customer service, it

really does come down to improving passenger safety. "today in the bay's" stephanie chuang is live in san francisco where the work began early this morning, stephanie, it has been very difficult for folks to hear those announcements. >> reporter: you know what kris, good morning to you, spoken to a few passengers this morning, it is early. all of them said the pa systems is okay, but they are excited about one thing that is coming to this station here, the 22nd street station. i'll talk about that in just a bit, but work was here under the bridge. conduit work from 1:00 in the morning until 4:00. they wrapped up early. work to improve the pa systems. and that work begins at that station and goes south to the south san francisco station before sunny valley and finally in san jose. the last south bay project set for completion in late december, maybe early january. now back in 2009 when a report revealed that the pa systems at these four stations were both unreliable and in adequate, and not only has this impacted the customer experience, but cal train says of course the pa

systems are used to provide critical service and safety information and announcements. at 22nd station, cal train is also installing visual message signs, and that is what riders we spoke with this morning say will make a big difference. >> the visuals pretty important. it's nice to have that. that lets you know if you're going to be on time, not on time, things like that. >> reporter: now the work begins today at the 22nd street station as mentioned here nor san francisco. crews worked from one to 4:00 in the morning and that'll continue. the hours of work for the other three stations are different. they're set to run from 7:00 in the morning until 5:00 at night. again the visual message signs heading here to the 22 nt street station and that's what people say is going to help them catch those trains for them in the morning. live in san francisco, stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much, stephanie. let's join meteorologist christina loren, at least in the north bay, chances for sprinkles. >> yeah.

temperatures are going to stay mild. 66 in san francisco, your high today around 68. north bay, 61 degrees in santa rosa. you're starting out the day, 66 degrees in redwood city and here in silicon valley, 64 degrees. this is what we're working with throughout your afternoon. those showers are going to continue to move to the north out of the bay area, and as they do so, we're going to see a really nice piece of stuff today. good air quality, especially in the places that receive the most moisture, heelsburg, almost a.01 of an inch whereby we're going totally that up. tahoe accumulated over two inches of rain. the best total i had came in just south of lake tahoe near kirkwood, and that was 2.13. over two and a tenths inch out there were and that's significant for this time of year. 76 on the east shore. 68 in san francisco. here's the deal, we stay nice for the first three days through
