critics. we'll hear what he's saying in a moment, but let's begin with the crash scene in ukraine. more bodies recovered overnight but what will come of them. keir simmons has the latest on that. keir, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. a forensic team is here now and say they should be able to move the bodies from a train station today. even as they arrived, more fighting broke out at another train station nearby. you'll have to wonder how they'll examine debris like this in such a vol tatile area. the victims have been taken to a train station. they will be able to move them today. four full days after the crash, huge pieces of aircraft metal are still unguarded.

these are luggage compartments. nearby people's bags appear to have been opened. this morning the international outrage is growing. >> it is an absolutely shambolic situation. it does look more like a cleanup than a forensic investigation. >> reporter: from the scenes we've witnessed, what recovery there is is just basic. . a car and rope they're trying to haul some wreckage out of the water. they bring an old fire truck and the only crane. most of the bodies have been recovered. this man from minnesota lost his brother and sister-in-law. >> very outgoing and aded adventurous. >> reporter: he speaks of forgiveness. >> everything does happen for a reason. so that's again why we feel we can forgive those that did this. >> reporter: the pro-russian

rebels accused by some of shooting down the plane seized the black box. they will hand it over, they say. two miles away at another crash site are family photographs found in the wreckage alongside teddy bears. belongings of a grieving relative in the world somewhere might want. locals said grief like this should bring people together. instead the pro-russian rebels and the ukrainian government is accusing each other of disrupting the investigation. and you really think every day clues that might be here may be going missing. >> keir simmons, what a scene in ukraine for us this morning. thank you. >> and the tragedy is spurring the already tense relationship between the united states and russia. overnight putin responded. foreign correspondent andrea mitchell has the latest.

good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the downing of mh-17 has dealt another severe blow between the united states and russia. as they say there is evidence that implicates russia that they provided the missile and trained the rebels who used it. the propaganda machine of vladimir putin has been firing back at the u.s. issuing a video statement saying russia's sported separatists should provide access to the crash site. it comes amid the leader to do more to help the investigation. >> this is a moment of truth for mr. putin and for russia. >> reporter: on "meet the press," secretary of state john kerry ratcheted up the pressure on vladimir putin saying intelligence picked up convoys carrying heavy weapons crossing into ukraine in recent weeks. >> we picked up the imagery of this launch. we know the trajectory.

we know where it came from. we know the timing. and it was exactly at the time that this aircraft disappeared from the radar. >> reporter: kerry blasted putin's government for not cracking down on the separatists. >> there is drunken separatists piling bodies into trucks. >> it's about the entire international community demanding that the proper access to this site is made available. >> reporter: putin's henchmen have denied any involvement and the powerful propaganda machine shifted into high gear with russia blaming ukraine's military for the jet's destruction. one even sniped at the u.s. on twitter. quote, the white house has found guilt before any investigation. just like saddam hussein and his weapons of mass destruction. so now we have promises from putin this morning, but he has made promises before for peace in ukraine.

whether he delivers this time remains to be scene and whether europe will stand up to him is the big question. >> andrea mitchell, thank you so much. david remnick is the editor of the new yorker and has covered russia extensively. good to see you. we heard vladimir putin overnight saying to separatists let the investigators into the scene. can't he do more than that? doesn't he have control over them? could he end this right now. >> of course he has control over them. and we've gone through a situation now where the scene has already been violated. bodies taken to a train station for some reason. all kinds of violations. and he's saying the right things now, but quite late. and now people have to act on them. look, the horrible thing has already happened. this is a horrendous, horrendous incident that could lead to further violence and we hope that it doesn't. putin is the singular actor and

he has to act now to set things right and has to stop this aggression in ukraine. >> u.s. officials are saying this is putin's moment of truth. but what's he likely to do? this is somebody you watch very closely. is he going to dig? or will he distance himself from the separatists? >> i think in some ways he set off this frenzy. remember that his annexation of crimea caused his ratings to go through the roof. >> in russia. >> but he's in politician in russia. his ideology has gotten increasingly conservative. he's released a nationalist fervor. it's up to him to rein it in and up to his media to rein it in. i think you can't imagine what you see on russian television which is how everybody gets their information in russia. he has unleashed this and it's up to him to tap it down, to

settle things down. >> what would motivate him to do so? it's really europe that has been reluctant to go hard after russia in terms of what's happening in ukraine. >> well, what's incumbent is in the world economy his growth rate is now zero. it's almost zero. and it's almost as if he has stirred up this fervor as a way to cover this over. i mean, his popularity in the old days was based on enormous rates of economic growth. he doesn't have that anymore. if he wants to be integrated into the world economy, he has to start behaving like an actor on the world scene. >> always good to get your perspective. thank you very much. send it over to carson. >> thank you. now to the ongoing violence between israel and hamas. two americans are among the dead on the israeli side. and secretary of state john kerry is heading to the region to push for a ceasefire.

nbc's richard engel is in gaza city. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, carson. secretary kerry is headed to cairo to try to revive an egyptian cease-fire after the deadliest day yet. over 110 palestinians killed. at least 13 israeli soldiers killed. two of them u.s. citizens. the bloodiest day of the two-week conflict started when israeli troops in gaza ran into trouble. several soldiers were killed when the vehicle was destroyed. israel pushed deeper in gaza, but lost two troops. palestinians say israel then unleashed hell. pounding an eastern neighborhood

with artillery. palestinians describe a massacre. bodies in the streets, a journalist killed, a medical worker too. his colleagues grieved in gaza city's main hospital where the morgue quickly filled up. palestinians say israel's fire was indiscriminate. more than 70 palestinians killed in one neighborhood alone. thousands of civilians have fled the area and many came here to the hospital to check on loved ones, but it is too dangerous to go back to the neighborhood so they sleep in the parking lot. both sides bury their dead in a conflict that shows no signs of letting up. also overnight, israel bombed the house of a palestinian militant killing him and at least 27 members of his extended family. that happened in the southern gaza strip. savannah and carson, back to you. >> all right.

richard engel reporting in gaza city this morning. be safe, you and your crew. meantime let's turn to natalie. huge fire in washington they're dealing with. >> massive fire. and fire crews are hoping cooler temperatures in washington state and calmer winds might help them get a handle on that massive wildfire. nbc's jacob rascon is there with the latest in alta lake. good morning. >> reporter: natalie, good morning. conditions today are better than they have been for a week and the fire is now burning in an area where there are no more homes. but that is the good news in a week the governor called unprecedented in washington state. the largest wildfire in washington state history has now devoured 300,000 acres of the cascade mountains. destroying more than 150 homes leaving entire neighborhoods desolate. on the front lines, hot shot crews struggle to gain control. erratic winds only making conditions worse. >> sometimes it'll pick up and

get some pretty heavy gusts. sometimes it'll just die down to nothing. >> this was the basement. >> reporter: in alta lake a power outage forced the smith family to quickly evacuate hoping to return when electricity was restored. >> we never believed it was going to jump the river and come over here and do this. >> reporter: in the town of pateros, this church is one of the only buildings left on the block. just up the road, corner stone church doubled as a shelter for some members. some like tom handcox, now homeless. >> i tried to save it. >> reporter: an emotional journey for scores of families including many here in alta lake. they won't have water or power for at least a month. fire crews look ahead to rain in the forecast later in the week. >> that'll be good news and welcome there. jacob rascon in washington state, thank you. a small plane crashed near sedona, arizona, sunday killing four people and sparking a brush

fire. hikers reported seeing the plane crash, but it took fire crews a couple of hours to reach the scene because of the rugged terrain in the canyon. the fire has burned at least 25 acres has not been contained. another weekend of deadly violence in chicago. at least 40 people were shot, 4 killed including an 11-year-old girl who was shot by a stray bullet inside a chicago home on friday. shmiya adams was at a sleepover with six other kids when that bullet came through the bedroom window. police are still searching for a suspect. more than a hundred homes are evacuated in wisconsin sunday after a freight train derailed. officials said about 5,000 gallons of diesel fuel spilled from the engine as the train came off the tracks. hazmat crews were called to the scene. two were taken to the hospital but are expected to be okay. it's not easy to say i'm sorry, but a dog named charlie sure has found a unique way to

do it. it all started when charlie stole a stuffed animal from his human sibling. then the baby starts to cry. and charlie has a guilty conscience. not only did he bring that toy back but about every other toy he could find in the entire house. including a video game controller. >> there you go. >> charlie even gave the little baby a kiss. let's not smother the baby, charlie. >> next up he's going to bring a plate of bacon or something. >> yeah! >> all the bones he's buried. >> dad has him well trained. >> thank you. hello, mr. roker, back from your adventure. >> that's right. we've got a lot of heat to talk about. it's been kind of cool for parts of the plains, but that is changing rather quickly. we're looking at all this warm, moist air that is funneling up into the plains. behind it we've got cooler drier air. you know when you put those two together, that is not good news. first of all we've got heat advisories for minneapolis.

this entire area, eight states the heat index is going to feel like it's between 100 and 110 this afternoon. add to that the slight risk of storms from minot to minneapolis. but within that there is a moderate risk for very strong storms from bismarck, fargo, aberdeen. could see tornadoes out of this. and a lot of rain anywhere from 1 to 3 inches of rain. so there is the potential for flash flooding from the dakotas into northern minnesota. we'll get to your local forecast in the next 30 seconds. hey. i'm ted and this is rudy. say "hi" rudy. to undocumented immigrant children in southern california today. over the past week, people have been dropping off clothing and toiletries at guadalupe church in san jose. those donations will go to children and mothers who have been greeted by protesters in murrieta. they crossed the border in hopes of escaping violence in central america. i'm meteorologist christina loren, has sprinkles early, but now they withered away. >> yeah, they're just watching one area at this point, it's up in the north bay, the showers are quickly clearing, hey in santa rosa, you might find a few drops out there on your car, if you parked outdoors, use your windshield wipers. stockton with fog at this point. downtown san francisco, beautiful start to the day, plenty of low clouds to go around. in antioch, this is a great sign for you, the low clouds made it all the way through the delta, and as a result, it's going to be gorgeous today and mostly cloudy, here in the south bay, gorgeous sunrise coming your way

with first lady michelle obama. >> looking forward to that. let's begin this half hour with a large sinkhole that's opened in a florida neighborhood forcing at least three families out of their homes. kerry sanders has the latest. kerry, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. you can see how massive this sinkhole is. geologists are still evaluating whether this sinkhole is going to grow or whether it is stabilized. geologists say this part of florida is accustomed of seeing sinkholes. but still they come without warning and when it does happen, it can be scary. >> mother nature seems to have a plan of her own and i'm not happy with it. >> reporter: and who would be? a sinkhole roughly the size of half a football field and three stories deep opening up just feet from your front door. >> i never even heard of a sinkhole back home in ohio. >> reporter: that's because

they're not as common in ohio and other parts of the country as they are in february. still a sinkhole made news in kentucky when it opened inside the corvette museum. it became the museum's unexpected new tourist attraction. museum officials are now conditioning keeping part of it intact. but because of florida's geology, it has more sinkholes than any other state by far. about a year ago one took down this building in a resort near disney world. terrified guests ran to safety. no one was injured. and it's rare, but they can be deadly. last year this sinkhole near tampa actually swallowed a man as he slept in his bed killing him. his body was never recovered. melissa cox just moved into this neighborhood a month ago. does it make you nervous at all? >> yeah.

all right. this morning on rossen reports, a consumer alert for propane grills. jeff rossen is here with more. >> timely story. we've shown you this before. unbelievable video from earlier this month of a massive explosion as this taco truck in philadelphia just blew up to pieces. 12 people were injured in this. five of them critically. investigators say a leak in the propane tank was to blame. and when we saw this, it got us wondering. many of us have barbecue grills in your back yards. we probably used them this weekend like me. so could something like this happen at your home? experts say yes and it happens all the time. they're about to show us this morning how quickly things can turn deadly. a fire ball in your background. a scary blast that can literally

knock you down. and experts say it happens more often than you'd think. 7,000 gas grill fires every year. many from leaking propane like this. you're watching a fourth of july nightmare in progress. byron bends over to light his propane barbecue and then the explosion. his body is engulfed in a wall of fire. >> i looked at my arm and seen the skill skin burn off here. >> reporter: he left the propane on too long building up inside and igniting. home surveillance cameras rolling as he runs to the swimming pool to put himself out. moments later the paramedics arrive and rush him to the e.r. >> i got second degree burns all through here. my face and hair caught on fire. >> reporter: and byron isn't alone. these dangerous explosions are posted all over youtube. to find out just how powerful a

blast can be, we set up a demonstration. with minnesota firefighters standing by, we opened the gas valve to simulate a leak. i can actually smell the propane right now. after just a few minutes -- >> three, two, one. >> reporter: you see that fire ball? that could be you standing at the grill. take another look. a giant ball of fire erupting from the grill blowing the doors open, shooting out of the top, and look at those flames out of the bottom. what's the most common mistake people make when grilling? >> they turn on the gas, put the cover down, hit the igniter. >> reporter: keep the lid open before you light it. >> yes. and don't let it build up and don't put over the top.

another thing is soapy water test. check your hose make sure there's no bubbling. >> reporter: if you see it bubbling, that means there's a gas leak. >> that's right. you need to replace it if it can't be tightened up. >> reporter: grills are safe if used properly. simple tips so this doesn't happen at your next barbecue. and experts say there's even more you can do. here's the takeaway for you. if you keep hitting the igniter switch and the barbecue doesn't light right away, don't keep hitting it. don't do that. shut off the gas completely. wait three to five minutes before trying to light it again. if the gas is built up, that will help it dissipate. keep your grill at least three feet away from your house. that way it doesn't spread around if there is a fire. if you look at the grill and propane tank, there are instructions on the side. follow it to a t >> or just order in.

rail cars. but want greater access to the site. most of the bodies of the 298 passengers and crew members have been recovered as outrage intensified over the downing of the amsterdam to malaysia air flight. they presented what they called powerful evidence that pro-russian rebels shot the plane down. now an emotional plea from a father who lost his only daughter on the downed plane. now he's begging world leaders like putin and president obama to pay some respect to the lives lost. here's nbc's katy tur. >> reporter: as some memorials grow and others begin to fade away, tears are turning into anger. >> my one child. she was my everything. gone. >> reporter: hans deborst was on the plane with her mother, stepfather, and half brother.

sky. hans de borst of netherlands. today john kerry will be pushing for a ceasefire in cairo as the death toll grows in gaza. more than 500 palestinians have been killed in the two-week offensive. more than 60 of them sunday in the first major ground battle. at least 20 israelis have died including two soldiers who were also u.s. citizens. last night the security council demanded an immediate end to the fighting. two new york police officers have been assigned to desk duty after a man died due to a choke hold. eric garner was being arrested when the father of six was taken down as you see in this video. he later died. the emergency workers who responded have been placed on

this is an nbc news special report. here's savannah guthrie. >> good morning, everyone. welcome to this nbc news special report. we are awaiting a statement at this hour from president obama on the situation in ukraine. four days after the downing of malaysian airlines flight 17. as you know, 298 people perished when that plane was shot down. just this morning, a new team of investigators arrived at the crash site. let's go right to nbc's national correspondent peter alexander on duty at the white house for us this morning. peter, good morning. do you have any preview of what the president might be saying this morning? >> savannah, it's likely the president will address both ukraine and the situation in israel and gaza right now, but the focus of his remarks will

certainly be on ukraine and he will, we are told, give an update to the american people on the situation taking place right there. it's likely the president will add his voice to that chorus of new pressure that is growing on vladimir putin, the president of russia, right now with new calls taking place, including a u.n. security council resolution to be voted on later this afternoon for access and a full international investigation at the crash site. the president will likely echo the remarks of his secretary of state, john kerry, just yesterday who he has now dispatched to the middle east to focus on that region as well. savannah. >> stand by there. let's go to andrea mitchell, nbc chief foreign affairs correspondent. we have seen the rhetoric ratcheted up against vladimir putin. what do you expect the president to say? do you feel like they're going to try to put more pressure on president putin. >> john kerry ratcheted up the rhetoric. president obama has tried to leave some running room. it will be interesting to see

whether he does. the president is coming out. >> walking out of the south lawn from the oval office. expected to speak in a few moments on the ukraine situation and may hear him address the violence unfoflding in the middle east. >> good morning, everybody. i want to make a brief statement about the tragedy in ukraine. before i do, though, i want to note that secretary kerry has departed for the middle east. as i've said many times israel has a right to defend itself against rocket and tunnel attacks from hamas and as a result of its operations israel has already done significant damage to hamas' terrorist infrastructure in gaza. i've also said, however, that we have serious concerns about the rising number of palestinian civilian deaths and the loss of israeli lives. and that is why it now has to be our focus and the focus of the international community to bring about a cease-fire that ends the fighting and that can stop the

deaths of innocent civilians, both in gaza and in israel. so secretary kerry will meet with allies and partners. i've instructed him to push for an immediate cessation of hostilities based on a return to the november 2012 cease-fire agreement between israel and hamas in gaza. the work will not be easy. obviously there are enormous passions involved in this and some very difficult strategic issues involved, nevertheless i've asked john to do everything he can to help facilitate a cessation to hostilities. we don't want to see any more civilians getting killed. with respect to ukraine, it's now been four days since malaysian airlines flight 17 was shot down over territory controlled by russian-backed separatists in ukraine.

over the last several days, our hearts have been absolutely broken, as we've learned more about the extraordinary and beautiful lives that were lost. men, women, and children and infants who were killed so suddenly and so senselessly. our thoughts and prayers continue to be with their families around the world who are going through just unimaginable grief. i've had the opportunity to speak to a number of leaders around the world whose citizens were lost on this flight, and all of them remain in a state of shock, but frankly also in a state of outrage. our immediate focus is on recovering those who were lost, investigating exactly what happened, and putting forward the facts. we have to make sure that the truth is out and that

accountability exists. now international investigators are on the ground, they have been organized -- i've sent teams, other countries have sent teams. they are prepared, they are organized to conduct what should be the kinds of protocols and scouring and collecting of evidence that should follow any international incident like this and what they need right now is immediate and full access to the crash site. they need to be able to conduct a prompt and full and unimpeded as well as transparent investigation. and recovery personnel have to do the solemn and sacred work of recovering the remains of those who were lost. now ukraine president poroshenko has declared a demilitarized zone around the crash site. as i said before you have international teams in place prepared to conduct the

investigation and recover the remains of those who have been lost. but unfortunately, the russian-backed separatists who control the area continue to block the investigation. they've repeatedly prevented international investigators from gaining full access to the wreckage. as investigators approached, they fired their weapons into the air. separatists are removing evidence from the crash site all of which begs the question, what are they trying to hide? moreover, these russian-backed separatists are removing bodies from the crash site. often times, without the care that we would normally expect from a tragedy like this. this is an insult to those who have lost loved ones. this is the kind of behavior that has no place in the community of nations. now, russia has extraordinary influence over these separatists. no one denies that.

russia has urged them on. russia has trained them. we know that russia has armed them with military equipment and weapons, including anti-aircraft weapons, key separatist leaders are russian citizens, so given its direct influence over the separatists, russia and president putin in particular, has direct responsibility to compel them to cooperate with the investigation that is the least that they can do. president putin says he supports a full and fair investigation and i appreciate those words but they have to be supported by actions. the burden is now on russia to insist the separatists stop tampering with the evidence, grant investigators who are already on the ground immediate full and unimpeded access to the crash site. the separatists and russian sponsors are responsible for the safety of the investigators doing their work.

and along with our allies and partners we will be working this issue at the u.nited nations today. more broadly as i've said throughout this crisis and the crisis in ukraine generally, and i've said this directly to president putin as well as publicly, my preference continues to be finding a diplomatic resolution within ukraine. i believe that can still happen. that is my preference today and it will continue to be my preference. but if russia continues to violate ukraine's sovereignty and to back these separatists and these separatists become more and more dangerous and now are risks not simply to the people inside of ukraine, but the broader international community, then russia will only further isolate itself from the international community and the costs for russia's behavior will only continue to increase. now is the time for president putin and russia to pivot away

from this strategy they've been taking and get serious about trying to resolve hostilities within ukraine in a way that respects ukraine's sovereignty and respects the right of the ukrainian people to make their own decisions about their own lives. and time is of the essence. our friends and allies need to be able to recover those who are lost. that's the least we can do. that's the least that decency demands. families deserve to lay their loved ones to rest with dignity. the world deserves to know exactly what happened, and the people of ukraine deserve to determine their own future. thanks. >> thank you. other actions -- >> that was president obama speaking from the white house south lawn. clearly stating to president putin it's time for him to step up. he made the argument that putin has control over the separatists who are currently controlling the crash scene in eastern ukraine and said it is time for

them to step up, allow access, encourage a transparent investigation. he said, quote, that is the least that they can do. let's go to kier simmons in the region, left the train station where we understand many, many of the bodies have now been put into a refrinnge rated train. there's word that perhaps that train will be allowed to leave. what have you seen in terms of what the president talked about of the investigators to do their jobs there? >> savannah the president talked about a demilitarized zone. it doesn't feel like one. we're driving from an area where we've been told there's fighting breaking out. we saw on the way there armored personnel carriers filled with pro-russian militia armed to the teeth and so it doesn't feel like a demilitarized zone and that is the problem for investigators who might come here. in terms of the bodies, i spoke today to the leader of the forensic team who has just arrived here and he says that they hope to move those bodies on that refrigerated train

today. i asked him, when they would be able to get them back to relatives. he simply didn't know, savannah. >> kier simmons in that part of the region. let me turn to andrea mitchell who is still with me. seems the purpose was rhetorical to drive up that pressure on russia to do something about these separatists that the u.s. and other western allies have said he very much controls. >> well, the fact is that putin put out a video clip for the first time today responding to the international outrage saying that international observers should be let in and so it was time for the president to respond and frankly there have been a lot of criticism over the last few days he hadn't been muscular enough. this was the most forceful the president has been, challenging putin to deliver on his promises but as you point out, savannah, it is rhetorical because what will be the next step? sanctions, more sanctions? the international community has yet to respond. >> and of the separatists themselves, the president said what exactly are they trying to hide? andrea mitchell in our washington newsroom, thank you.

>> purple pose bro kad. >> for people watching, what was the relationship you played? the manager. james called him pop. this was more than a business relationship. >> colonel tom and elvis, colonel tom left elvis 8% and encouraged the use of the drugs to keep him going. ben was in the bernie category of agent. loves his clients. always wanted them to do well. enjoyed their work and artistry. so they had a symbiotic relationship. a bit of a father/son relationship. he was a sympathetic figure and one that james took and downloaded from him and became one of the greatest black entrepreneurs in the history of the show. >> and then the business helped him make that connection. >> james was a great businessman and got it right away.

once he figured the rules out and the way things were done and the systems, he turned them to his advantage, increased profit. that was all from him. >> tell me about the first time you met had him. was it the first time you cast him in "blues brothers." >> i saw him for the first time at esquire show bar in '78. you could sit there and have a drink and the dancers would dance down the bar. so when the cape was dropped on him in "please please please" that was a transformative moment for me and my five friends that squeezed into one of the mother's mustangs and drove down there. when they dropped that cape, it was everything. it was theatrical, funny, there was music. it was just consummate entertainment. he was a great entertainer. >> you considered him a friend until the end. what was james brown really like? >> well, he was a little paranoid.

because so many people had been trying to screw him since the beginning of his life. so he -- it took awhile for him to trust you. but he was funny and always playing kind of little pranks with his staff. tricks and pranks and stuff. you know, i guess he was just a showman and a great band leader. he was so much fun to be around. >> you hear about actors who get it. but to get mr. brown and the dancing and singing, he seemed to transform into james brown. >> i didn't have to squint to imagine it was james sitting there? he had his voice and cadence and the way james spoke. this was not a duplication or impression. this is a fine young actor embodying a role as actors should do. >> that's a great team.

octavia spencer playing his mom. >> i get to be in this cast, so privileged to be in this cast with these tremendous actors. it's something i can be proud of and tell my children they can show up to this one. >> let's switch gears a bit. we just came off the 30th anniversary of "ghostbusters" last month. >> we owned the city here. >> what's one of your fondest memories of that? >> we were stealing shots all over no permits or nothing. we were just walking along at the library. and people, they didn't know who we were. they weren't even reacting to us. >> normal new york. >> it was great and thought this is just going to be a great experience. then we went to madison avenue with the rigs on and it was pandemonium there. here we were with the packs and the tube, that green tube we had there. you know what that's for? you see a ghost, you get scared,

sometimes you lose it. >> that's what that was. got it. i thought you weren't scared about anything. what about "ghostbusters 3." >> it looks like we'll be in preproduction in the spring, from what i hear. >> all right. we'll check in tomorrow. i want to ask you about the late great james garner. you worked together in "my fellow more than." >> we did. what a classy guy. >> tell me about him. >> he was gracious and generous and young talent and young people coming up. no pretentiousness there at all. i got to work with him and jack lemon there. he was a first class actor and man. he'll be missed. you know, he was working almost there to the end there. did something a couple years ago. >> good to see you dan. all the best. you can check out "get on up"

it back. >> good idea. 6:00 a.m. phone call nobody wants. >> absolutely not. we're starting off with this malaysia air crash. and just the more you hear about it, the worst it gets. western investigators finally get to the crash site this morning to help identify the bodies. and then we hear this horrific story about bodies being stored in refrigerated train cars. >> i think it just compounds such a tragic story already knowing that this is a crime scene that essentially extends for miles and miles. and, you know, people's belongings are being rummaged through. there are reports of looting, people taking credit cards. and of course the bodies themselves being removed and taken care of in such a tragic disrespectful way. as john kerry said this morning on "meet the press," he talked about drunken separatists rummaging and pillaging the area

and taking the bodies. >> take a listen to what he had to say. >> we picked up the imagery of this launch. we know the trajectory. we know where it came from. we know the timing. and it was exactly at the time that this aircraft disappeared from the radar. >> so we still don't have definitive proof about who's responsible for this thing. obviously you have pointing to -- >> pro-russian rebels. >> that's right. so there's a lot of pressure now being put on vladimir putin. he's pushing back. he's saying in a video statement that russian-backed separatists should provide access. >> in the international community, meanwhile, you have ten nations where there's suffering. people and families of victims of ten nations at least that we've been able to identify thus far -- >> and the black boxes. >> exactly.

a lot of questions about where the evidence is going and who's taking care of this. it seems like it's basically out of control. >> and no end in sight. so we'll continue to watch this. but the idea that these families, their loved ones are being treated in such a horrific manner. even in death, it's just really outrageous. >> onto a different subject. if you're in the market for a new doctor, what do you usually look for? >> somebody i want to be very good looking. >> yeah. that's the criteria for al. >> and a good speaking voice. >> a lot of people look for good bedside manner. i'm one of those people. and whether or not their insurance is accepted. that's the first. do you accept my insurance, and how well am i going to get along with this doctor? apparently there's a new survey that was taken and they found that 22% of people say -- only 22% say they're confident they can find information to compare the quality of local doctors

saying information on the quality of doctors is not easy to find. i certainly agree with that. i think i like a lot of people usually trust the people that you know and ask for a recommendation. i remember when i was looking, you know, when you're having a baby you're supposed to get a pediatrician, go check them out first. before you have the child. i remember just interviewing a couple paid trigs and not really knowing what to ask. it comes down to who's the one who seems to be, first of all, closest to me in proximity. and somebody i think i might like or has a good bedside manner. >> a good combo would be somebody qualified who you like. >> and qualifications also, you know, for say you have an illness, you want to make sure you're getting the right treatment for that illness. >> really likable but doesn't know what he's talking about. >> he's such a great guy.

he knows so much about other things. summer stress? feeling a little stressed out, perhaps? >> surprised by this. 1/3 of us in the u.s. are more stressed in summer months. >> i think that's true. i'm more stressed in the summer months. traveling a lot. >> yeah. you do. >> and the kids are home. so it's not as easy, you know, because usually they're at school and somebody else is taking care of them. >> i don't know -- i think we're slackers. we don't do anything really fun. the kids are at camp, so they're gone. it's like school only with arts and crafts. >> exactly. >> i'm still making nicki's lunch in the morning. he's gone, gets back, still goes to tae kwon do. >> so you're less stressed. >> i'm less stressed. courtney's out of the house

man. anyway, shall we look at what's going on right now. a lot of heat and a lot of humidity getting itself together in the plains. so we're going to see this warm, humid airstreaming up into the plains today. we've got cool air, here's what's happening. we have this heat. over eight states, heat advisory. basically what it feels like. it's going to feel like 100 to 110 by the afternoon. you get that heavy -- that colder air coming in and so we've got a risk of strong storms today from minot to minneapolis. but a strong risk of severe weather later this afternoon into this evening. we could be seeing tornadoes out of them. dangerous thing about this is a lot of this activity will be happening late tonight into the overnight hours when you can't see what's coming. so make sure you stay tuned to your . 9:11. thank you, al. good morning more to you.
