construction eastbound, road crews show up in the taillights, away from us in dublin but i don't see it this morning. note, lights smoothly around el charro. look at your map, out of the altamont pass between greenville and vasco road. seeing slowing towards speed sensors. two center lanes blocked and maybe eastbound as well. electrical work going on in center divides and no emergency work goingen, unexpected. it should clear by 6:00 but they have approving to thereby as late as 8:00. not planned for that late. it does, it will cause a big backup. we'll track it. the south bay, peninsula, into the city, smoothly. you have information about someone in town? >> that's right. president obama is actually waking up in san francisco this morning. air force one touched down at sfo late last night. there's a strange sight. there was no one to greet him at

the bottom of the stairs. mr. obama's in town for a fund-raising trip. "today in the bay's" stephanie chuang live where the president is staying. president obama taking heat about the timing of his visit, given what's happening around the world right now. >> reporter: that's laura. especially with conflicts unfolding across the globe. but as you can imagine, a lot of security here at the int intercontinental hotel. we're in the soma area of san francisco. so you can see, there is a strong security presence here. there's also, we've got shots from the streets around the hotel where the president has been staying overnight. they've been blocked off. the president, as you mentioned, arriving at sfo around 9:30. there was tight security. president obama's visit to the bay area is to raise money specifically for the democrats who are campaigning for congress in this year's midterm elections. but this, as the israel/gaza

conflict continues and aftermath of the malaysia airlines plane shot down continues to unfold. political analysts we spoke with say mr. obama has a duty to handle both roles as leader in foreign affairs and as a fund-raiser but republicans counter he should be focusing solely on critical international matters. >> i would say that right now is a particularly inopportune time weep have a war in israel and america under attack by russia. >> he's the leader of the democratic party and parties need money to buy tv time, to successfully campaign. he's helping out the congress in this case. >> reporter: the president came to the bay area after a fund-raiser in seattle before heading to l.a. next he makes a stop this morning at four seasons hotel in san francisco for a house majority pack event at 9:20 this

morning. live in san francisco, stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." after that event, the president will head to a fund-raiser at the loss altos hill homes of judy and george marcus. judy inducted into the hall of fame last year for her philanthropic work. for $10,000, you can eat lunch with the president and take a photo with him. nancy pelospelosi, anna eshoo a steve israel will also be there. along with supporters come protesters. they will be in los altos hills trying to get the president to stand up for net neutrality. they think access to the internet should be un restrires and equal to all. feeting an fcc proposial allowig providers to offer faster speeds for a fee.

where the president goes, we will go. we'll cover president obama's visit through the day. head to nbcbayarea.com for updated information. president obama sends secretary of state kerry to tel aviv. he'll meet with leaders there, try to broker a peace deal. it comes as faa is banning american carriers from offering commercial flights between u.s. and israel. overnight, israel continued to pound the gaza trip with rockets, one which knock down a building. protesters pelted israeli soldiers with rocks and threw molotov cocktails before running for cover. most fighting concentrated around gaza city but ambulances cannot get in because it's too dangerous. so far ten ambulances have been fired upon, and one medic has been killed. the last time this medic went in, he says he found a woman barely alive who had been buried under debris from her home for two days he and his crew took

her to the hospital but doubt she'll survive. more than 630,000 palestinians and 29 israelis have died. two planes carrying bodies of those who died when malaysian airline flight 17 was shot out of the sky should arrive in the netherlands any minute now. early this morning in ukraine, uniformed men carried plane wooden coffins with the bodies inside, loaded them on to the planes. another plane carrying the black boxes arrived in the uk hours ago. the data will be evaluated. u.s. intelligence officials think the plane was shot down over ukraine by accident but russia denies its supporters were involved. the u.s. says there's plenty of evidence to prove they were. >> there were ample social media accounts to indicated that a system that appeared to be missing one specific missile was being transported back across the border from ukraine to

russia. there were also social media accounts of separatists shooting down an airplane. >> international investigators saw the six-mile debris field for the first time yesterday. they say there's no security. appears some debris was moved and altered as well. closer to home, new this morning, workers at house of liquors in san leandro received a surprise when a truck crashed through the wall. firefighters had to clear that building with boards before they could get that truck out. the driver went to the hospital but only has a preindication. the store was open at the time but no one inside was hurt. investigators are not sure if the driver had any liquor of her own before she got behind the wheel. tonight the district in charge of pinole valley high school will do if a temporary school isn't done on time. the temporary high school is supposed to accommodate students while the new school's being built. it was supposed to be finished by the time the school year begins august 18th.

but now district leaders say it might not be done until mid-september. the old school's torn down to make room for $125 million facility scheduled to open in three years. 4:37. san jose police department relying on community service officers to help offset its ongoing police shortage. the department hired 25 officers who will mostly give police officers help by writing reports and responding to minor crimes. they will help with noninjury car accidents and crowd control at certain events. the community officers will wear light blue uniforms distinct from traditional officers and carry pepper spray instead of guns. they'll hit the streets after completing eight weeks of training. starting pay $52,000. 4:38. we lost some of the humidity and moisture in the air. it's looking more fair. good morning, christina loren. >> good morning to you, scott, laura, everybody at home. you know what, it's going to be really, really nice today. we're going to bring the temperatures way up as of tomorrow but this morning,

starting out mild. plenty of 60s. you're at 67 degrees, for example, in san francisco to kick off the day. we still do have a little bit of moisture hanging around the bay area, not a lot but enough to which we're getting radar return at this point. only in san francisco. as we head throughout the morning hours, this is our only chance to see monsoonal moisture creep in. we'll rule that out by 10:00. temperatures, oh they're going to be so nice. 79 today in san jose. around 75 peninsula, where it's still lark in la honda. this weekend, we have such unusual ocean currents out there the weather offshore, santa cruz, it's really mild. the ocean itself, the water, 67 degrees this morning in the water. we'll tell you why coming up. cool stuff happening out there. first, check your drive. mike inouye. >> we're going to start here, looking at bay bridge. a beautiful view. i'll show you on the speed sensors as well, beautiful flow of traffic across the bay bridge, that's westbound 80

you're watching "today in the bay." >> very good morning to you. wow, isn't that a gorgeous live look outside this morning? look at the reflection on the water. that's the bay bridge there. gorgeous start to our day. 4:44. new video to show you this morning. scary situation for passenger as board a chicago-bound plane. the flight had to make an emergency landing in columbus, ohio last night after smoke started coming from the cargo hold. the southwest airlines plane landed, the emergency slide deployed, and 49 passengers and 5 crew members managed to jump out safely. the plane is out of service until inspectors can figure out what caused all of that smoke. president obama not the only political heavyweight in the bay area today. former secretary of state hillary clinton will be in oakland for a community meeting with local leaders and family. clinton was in silicon valley earlier this week.

she took part in a two online question and answer sessions, one at facebook, one at twitter. she'll be promoting the group too small to fail, which focuses on helping children succeed. a senate committee will meet in washington to talk about what the country needs to do to feed children while at school. congress approved standards for lunches in 2010. they require districts to provide more fresh fruit, vegetables and whole grain. last may a separate committee voted to allow some districts to opt out of the new standards. schools that do not have enough money to follow standards can get a waiver from the federal government. facebook will announce earnings later today. let's turn to seema mody live at cnbc headquarters. >> good morning. futures flat after stocks were up on tuesday, lifting s&p 500 index to a new record. the s&p, which is the broadest

measure of the market's performance, now 17 points away from breaking the 2000 mark. a lot of eyes on the milestone number. tame inflation, progress in the housing market a focus for investors. we get numbers from boeing, facebook. dow rising 61, nasdaq up 31. apple reporting higher quarterly profit. apple sold more than 35 million iphones with strong demand from china, ipad sales fell. apple expected to introduce two new iphones and a smartwatch this fall. stub hub said thieves got access to 100 customer account who buy tickets for events. hackers didn't break through security. they got info from breaches at other websites. the manhattan district attorney's office will hold a news conference and reports say arrests are expected.

we head into your weekend and probably for next week as well. this is our last day of unseasonably cool weather across the bay area. want to show you what's going on on the radar. less active than 24 hours ago but getting pops of green out there. we do have some low clouds really start to thicken up at the coastline. that's great news for us. onshore flow will keep temperatures down today. 79 today in the south bay. 75 on the peninsula. comfortable conditions there. 74 for the east shore. 67 degrees, really, really nice day. that's on the ocean side of san francisco. if you're waking up with us on the bay side, or you work on the bay side of san francisco, that's where you're going to get 70 today. let me show you the trend. overall temperatures are going to jump by ten degrees between today and tomorrow. then we'll stay warm for friday, saturday and sunday. temperatures above average. let's talk about what else is above average. that's your water temperature just offshore. look at these temperatures.
