good morning to you. i'm meteorologist christina loren. overcast start over the oakland hills. want to show you what it look like over the santa clara valley. beautiful sky here. our last unseasonably cool day. we'll crank the heat starting tomorrow and it's going to last for quite some time. we'll get into the minutes. commute starts to build, look at this oakland and 880. the president's visit caughting issues for some drivers already. we have a live look outside at san jose. wednesday, july 23rd, this is today. very good morning to you. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm scott mcgrew. president obama in the bay area, a whirlwind trip. it's controversial with critics arguing the president should be dealing with big global issues

instead of fund-raising. this morning, we have team coverage. mike inouye will take a look at president's motorcade and how it affects traffic. bob redell will join us in los altos hills for a look at high profile fund-raiser. let's begin with stephanie chuang live in san francisco's soma district where the president is waking up. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, scott. that's right. it's a three-day west coast fund-raising trip and this is the second stop the bay area. the president is staying at intercontinental hotel down the street here where he stayed many times before. here at howard and 4th, a strong security president sense. in the last half hour, police and secret service have stopped a couple of vehicles including one elevator maintenance company conducting a thorough sweep for a few minutes before letting the driver through. the president here to raise money for the democrats, specifically for those campaigning for congress in the midterm election.

as the israel-gaza conflict worsens and the aftermath of the malaysia plane shot down continues to unfold, republicans are criticizing the president for the timing of his trip. our political analyst counters mr. obama has a duty to handle both roles as a leader in foreign affairs and fund-raiser for his party. >> he may be a lame duck, but a lame duck with a lot of ability to raise a lot of money for ducks that aren't lame, particularly those in congress. raising money for congressional candidates and the democratic party. >> right now is an inopportune time a serious war in israel and america under attack by russia. >> reporter: president obama touched down 9:20 last night. from the of the first west coast stop in seattle and heads back to sfo to fly out to l.a. for the next fund-raiser stop and the final one during the west coast trip. next up, house majority pac event at four seasons in san francisco and that starts at

9:20. stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." >> thank you. live to bob redell, live in los altos with a look at president's second stop of the day. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning to you, laura and scott. president raising money for congressional candidates, this fund-raiser taking place later this morning around 10:15 here in los altos hills at a private home, the private home of george and judy marcus. george marcus, a major democratic fund-raiser, found of real estate brokerage firm. and also expected in attendance, nancy pelosi, congresswoman anna eshoo, and steve israel, who is chairman of the democratic congressional campaign committee. this is not a cheap event to attend new york surprise. ticket prices range from $10,000 to over $30,000. 10,000 lunch and a photo with the president. for 32,400 the lunch, photo, access to a vip reception. now while these supporters are

dining with the president, other people who agree with the president on many issues will be speaking out against him. activists from moveon.org and other progressive organizations will be protesting the fcc's attempt to kill net neutrality. protesters want to pressure the president to keep access to the internet unrestricted and equal but the chair of the s.e.c. is threatening to do otherwise. >> the danger of a two-tiered setup where some information moves faster than others and only corporations have the ability to take full advantage of the internet, the federal communications commission is currently considering a proposal that would end net neutrality and we think it's very important that president obama come out strongly in support and make clear that the internet should be treated where everybody has access. >> reporter: the protest between

9:30 and 11:00. not clear how large a protest right now the moveon.org spokesperson who you heard from says they've got 30 to 40 people who rsvp'd. live in los altos hills, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you. the presidential visit going to tie up traffic as well. >> as it usually does. mike inouye. >> it's because of the president's visit, the presidential motorcade and security, as stephanie talked been let's show you, at the intercontinental hotel, where they are located 5th and howard. over there the four seasons hotel, first stop 9:20, watch mission, market, third and fourth. that's a perimeter. not far from the intercontinental but that will be a security issue and local traffic right in the middle of the morning commute. toward the second stop, midday over bob told you about los altos hills, marcus home or estate or i don't know, i've never been invited over, but 101 or 280 the two routes taken unless they go by helicopter,

which has happened in the past, but if it's a motorcade on the freeways, either of these, closures and overhead. you should see the overpasses with security, that will be a distraction for folks. later on back to sfo for the third stop, departing early and then out of the area. this will not affect the south bay. maps and then we'll talk about the traffic flow. in the city, more traffic coming. . bay bridge metering lights coming on, slowing at oakland side. getting into the city i see a normal flow of traffic off of the bay bridge and in toward the area fourth, fifth, howard by the intercontinental where there is security. the peninsula drive moving right there, predictable pace for 101 and 280, still too early because they're not traveling out of the city. south bay typical. north bay, slows through san jose. 680 past to elm rock. slowing towards the merge with guadeloupe parkway and 101. right at 680, everything moves quickly to the right hand shoulder but it's a distraction.

slowing that kick off quickly. takes a little bit of distraction to slow speeds. talking about the metering lights being on. end with two live shots one of palo alto easy flow of traffic but away from us. traffic from university to the embarcadero area where there's oftentimes construct slowing down a bit but volume's okay so far and 101 through san jose, talked about that build. i showed you the orange and this is what's going on now. smooth flow of traffic so far. president's visit not likely to affect the south bay or the east bay. good stuff. >> just the city. >> just the city to the peninsula. >> speaking of going outside, you mentioned bay bridge out there. take a look right now. as we glance, look at the sun coming up. gorgeous view out there. check the forecast with christina loren. good day to head to the beach. >> really, really great day to head to the beach. temperatures aren't going to be unseasonably warm. in fact, quite the contrary for today. you will notice full deck of low clouds at beach until lunchtime.

but after that, low clouds will burn off. you saw from tiburon, same sky over oakland hills, even in san jose, getting low clouds this morning. and, yeah, the beach, reason why it's great because of wart temperatures are in the upper 60s now. basically if you're headed out there, even just dipping your toes into that water, notice a difference. but i can tell you, it's not warm enough to where you can go out and just start swimming for a long period of time. you still want to watch out because you could get hypothermia but one of those rare occurrences in the bay area. mt. hamilton showing you a beautiful sky this morning. as we head throughout the day, temperatures going to climb out of the 50s and 60s where we are now into the 70s. spectacular day coming your way bay area. choice conditions for the presidential visit. he might reconsider moving here instead of rancho mirage, another great city.

you're watching "today in the bay." >> welcome back now. taking a live look, what a spectacular shot we have for you this morning. you can see that marine layer moving in from high atop mt. hamilton, has not yet made its way over to the santa clara valley but it will throughout the next couple of hours. we'll show you progression in addition to telling you about fantastic weather coming your way. microclimate forecast in moments. 580 westbound, more cars are going in the commute direction. we're watching for slowing because there's a new crash reported right around that dublin interchange. looks all right from the shot but i'll show you on the maps how things are shaking out. >> thanks so much, christina and mike. a look at today's top stories. in hours president obama will be leaving his san francisco hotel on his way to the four seasons for the first of two fund-raising events in the bay area today. he'll head south for a private lunch at los altos hills home of

george marcus. >> hillary clinton also in the bay area this morning. she'll be in oakland visiting the children's hospital oklahoma research institute promoting the group too small to fail. a liquor store in san leandro cleaning up this morning after a truck slammed into it overnight. happened at house of liquors on manner boulevard. firefighters had to secure the building with boards before they could get the truck out. the drive went to the hospital, no one else was hurt. now to the latest on the malaysian plane shot out of the sky. ukrainian government says, two of its military fighter jets have been shot down in the eastern part of the country. we do have new video just into our newsroom, shows pro-russian troops talking about how they just shot down two ukrainian jets and now want to capture the pilots. the video does, as you can see, appear to show one jet burning

on the ground. no way to verify the video yet. this is youtube video, it's not independently verified by nbc news. now before the jets were shot down, the bodies of flight 17 victims were loaded on to two ukrainian military planes for the first leg of their journey home. >> it's quite possible that many bodies are still out there in the open, in the european summer. >> now the plane's black boxes are now in the uk, where the data will be evaluates. 6:15, another developing story this morning. flight cancellations into the airport in tel aviv remains in effect this morning. in the meantime, u.s. secretary of state kerry has hit the ground running, trying to broker a cease-fire between israel and hamas. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez joins us with a fast, evolving story. >> watching developments on self-fronts. start with the faa ban which remains in effect for three more hours but we know at least one

european carrier is already extending their ban for another 24. this is new video of john kerry arriving in tel aviv to try to broker the cease-fire. his flight, not affected because he traveled by military plane. a u.s. and international commercial flight into tel aviv canceled by u.s. and some european carriers, after hamas rocket hit near the ben gurion airport. overnight, explosions lit up the sky over gaza city as israel launched air strikes once again there. one air strike hit a home, but no one there was hurt. a different story in the southern gaza city of rafah where people were picking through remains of a shelled out home. officials at a hospital said tank shelling killed four people and a bank was also badly damaged. now since the fighting began, on july 8th, more than 600 palestinians have died and the united nations estimates that 3/4 of them were civilians. 29 israelis have died, 2

civilians among them. before heading to israel, secretary kerry spoke from egypt about the cease-fire proposed by egypt, now supported by the u.s. and israel, but rejected by hamas. >> we're here working because we have seen too much bloodshed on all sides, including the death of two american citizens. >> now this is also new video this morning of more palestinians fleeing their homes. that's amid israeli strikes and shelling. at least seven people killed in this city. the united nations refugee agency reports that more than 118,000 palestinians have fled their homes and are now staying in 77 u.n. shelters. also new this morning, speaking at a united nations human rights commission, the high commercial said there was a strong possibility that israel had committed war crimes in gaza but at the same time she was condemning what she called the

indiscriminate firing of rockets into israel by militants into the gaza strip. calling on all sides to observe humanitarian law so the rhetoric ratcheting up as secretary of state is on the ground in tel aviv this morning. >> everything ramp eting up. well, on a happier note, let's check your forecast. live out to san jose check out our live cameras there. isn't that pretty? christina has a fantastic forecast on the way. >> we have president obama in town and it's going to be really nice. i'm wondering if he's going forward with a special report from here in the bay area. if he does, we'll have it right here on nbc bay area this morning for you. 6:18. live look at radar. pretty active at this point you can see where the showers are coming down in the north bay, really this is the only spot that we're watching and the activity is light. definitely about an eighth of what we had to deal with at this time yesterday morning. but we still have those low

clouds. they are coming in, morstead ily as well, which is an indication of onshore flow is increasing and that means a gorgeous day shaping up. unusual around the bay area for the past couple of days and this morning we have humidity out there, oakland hills showing you mostly clear but little bit of fog this morning. you can see through it, it's transparent at this point. 6:00 to 10:00 a.m. the muggy feel willing continue. between 10:00 and noon, beautiful sky on the way to the bay area. cool ocean air will pick up as well. home from work, building breeze like yesterday. winds pick up. temperatures in the 50s and 60s now. we are on our way to the 70s. 79 in the south bay, 73 on the east shore today. and 67 in san francisco. so let's get to the big weather story. and that is the fact that we're are going to jump between today and tomorrow. 79 today in the south bay. 87 tomorrow at 90 in san jose by

friday. and then once we get into it, we're going to stick with this unusually warm pattern through wednesday of next week. but it's a give and take. look at your temperature friday in san francisco. 78 degrees. that's a beach day. let's check your drive. here's mike. >> we're looking over toward the maze, emeryville cam are. berkeley curve smooth. we see slowing west 580 off of 24. typical pattern form wednesday no big problem off the berkeley kuf curve. the traffic flow, easy drive no major issues on the approach. that's great. metering lights on. backup for the bay bridge approach heading in towards san francisco. remember the area around the intercontinental, including 4th, 5th, mission, affected now by security and closures. rest of the east bay, not a problem on the approach. over toward the tri-valley and coming off of 238 for the castro valley y.

southbound 880 slow after a crash cleared from hayward. over to the peninsula, here, west 580, crash over on the shoulder right at dublin interchange that kicked off slowing but nothing dramatic. we see your drive building out of the livermore and dublin area. live look there, shows you dublin as far as westbound 850, volume of traffic holding. starting to slow down after el charro. san jose, northbound routes 101 with slowdown here. from 680 and 80 allen rock and closer to oakland road, we may have a small brushfire on the side. it's out of the roadway but a crew arriving and may be smoke. tracking that closely. back to you. >> thank you. other breaking news this morning, 6:21, 51 people were killed after an emergency landing goes drastically wrong in taiwan. new details coming up.

breaking news. reports of a deadly plane crash in asia. a taiwanese news agency says the plane crashed during an emergency landing outside the airport, on an island just west of mainland taiwan. 51 people are dead, according to that news report. seven more are hurt. we are continuing to update this. we'll update you with more information as it comes in to the newsroom. 6:24. the police department rely on community service officers to

offset its ongoing police shortage. the department just hired 25 officers who will give police officers help writing reports and responding to minor crimes. they'll also help with noninjury car accidents and crowd control at certain events. the community officers will wear light blue uniforms, distinct from traditional officers and carry pepper spray instud of guns. they'll hit the streets after eight weeks of training. pay $52,000. those in charge of the pinole high school will talk about a temporary school scheduled to open isn't done in time the temporary high school is supposed to accommodate students while a new school is being built. it was supposed to be finished in time for the school year which begins august 18th. district leaders say it might not be done until mid-september. the old school is being torn down to make room for $125 million facility scheduled to open in three years.

follow-up of the day, people in one pleasanton apartment complex waking up to showers and flushing toilets this morning. a happy change after five days without running water. water restored at spring house apartment complex yesterday afternoon. the property manager says, a pipe burst underground, took five different plumbers just to fix the job. more than 300 units were affected but no doubt things smelling better this morning. >> ? san francisco voters will decide whether people have to pay more for sodas. the board of supervisors approved putting the measure on the november ballot. the two cents per ounce tax would raise more than $35 million a year, most of that money would go towards health and nutritional programs. still ahead, president obama waking up in the bay area. and so is a woman who could take his place in office. we'll tell you what is bringing them both here. >> plus, open for now, but for

go to trade school. another company says it's in big trouble and they have to close. bryman college filed for bankruptcy according to the oakland tribune. bryman has campuses in san jose, hayward, san francisco. it's not clear how long the school will remain open at all. biohealth purchased bryman last year from corinthian college when it was called everett. corinthian's money troubles continued forcing the company to put most schools up for sales. facebook will report second quarter earnings after the bell. the company's stock has jumped 170%. analysts hope -- have big hopes for facebook, hoping to hear about a big increase in revenue. apple in focus, the company reporting higher quarterly profits, sales fell shy of wall street's estimates. apple sold 35 million iphones, strong demand in china. ipad sales fell second straight quarter. apple expected to introduce two

[ horns ] >> horns sounding this morning in the mediterranean sea, sending the "costa concordia" off on its final voyage. the ship will be towed to the northern italian port where it will be scrapped. more than 2 1/2 years ago the ship ran ground, capsized killing 32. the captain of the ship is on trial for manslaughter and abandoning his ship before everyone was evacuated. he has denied wrongdoing. new video, scary situation for passengers aboard a chicago-bound plane. the southwest flight had to make an emergency landing in columbus, ohio last flight after smoke started coming from the cargo hole. the plane landed, the emergency slide deployed and 49 passengers

water to the california coastline. now our winds have been out of the south recently, the southeast. and as a result of the recent pattern, our warmer, warmer waters, ocean currents coming up, california current bringing temperatures into the mid-60s, just offshore which is unusual. talking about hypoterma possibilities earlier. you can get in the water, you don't want to stay in longer than 10, 15 minutes you can get in, it's not going to be comfortable, but if you're a surfer you're into 65 degrees in the water in santa cruz. something cool. i like to tell you about that whenever it happens. 79 in the south bay. 75 peninsula. 68 san francisco. comfortable day on the east shore. 71. north bay, abundant sunshine. 83 degrees talk about air quality. another benefit of having showers roll through. good to moderate air quality.

so far ten have been hit, one medic has been killed. in the two-week long conflict, more than 630 palestinians and 29 israelis have died. another developing story, two ukrainian fighter jets were reportedly shot down near the site where the malaysian passenger plane was shot down. kris sanchez joins us with proof of how dangerous and unstable this area is. and the impact, kris, on the path. >> what we know, the two ukrainian fighter jets shot down as the ukrainian government reports increased clashes in the area. it is rebel-held area, about 20 miles from that main malaysia flight 17 crash site. those are the jets that can carry a pilot and a co-pilot, and there are early reports that the crews ejected but no confirmation yet. new video into our newsroom that

shows pro-russian troops talking about how they just shot down those two ukrainian fighter jets. and now want to capture the pilots. the video appears to show one jet burning on the ground but no way to independently verify the video yet. the youtube video has not been independently verified by nbc news. new video this morning of two planes carrying 200 bodies of the victims of malaysian airlines flight 17, arriving in the netherlands. we have live pictures as folks are starting to be seated for ceremony that will begin what is a national day of mourning. the bodies were loaded on to two ukrainian fighter -- ukrainian jets -- cargo planes early this morning for the first leg of their juourney home. the soldiers carried the caskets on to the plane that was again going to take them to the

netherlands. those planes landed this morning. now the victims are expected to arrive this morning. le be identified and later today, again, more ceremonies follow. it's a national day of mourning. now monitors from the organize for security and cooperation in europe visited the site with wreckage from the airlines flight. right now, though, it appears that only 200 victims have made their way home, there are 98 remaining at the scene. and the australian prime minister fears they may not be recovered. >> it's quite possible that man many bodies are in the open, in the european summer, subject to the interference and ravages of heat and animals. that is the predicament in which we found -- we find ourselves.

>> again, 298 bodies remain at the crash site. it is in rebel-held territory and now with the downing of the two ukrainian fighter jets, it just gives an indication of how difficult the investigation is. these monitors here at a different site, not held by those russian rebels. russia denies that its supporters in ukraine were involved, but the u.s. says there's plenty of evidence that they were behind it. and that it was a mistaken hit on what the rebels thought was a transport plane. only the ukrainian government is commenting on the downing of two ukrainian fighter jets. again this happening as the victims are arriving back on their home territory as their nation is in mourning. scott? >> kris sanchez, thank you. it's 6:57. new this morning, workers at house of liquors in san leandro received a late night surprise when a truck crashed through the wall.
