touches down on a day of mourning there. nbc's katy tur is in endhoven. >> reporter: good morning, matt. the plane landed moments ago. a trumpet will sound off and that is marking a moment of silence and i will not be able to talk. the first plane in the background, the australian c-17. the second one, the dutch, c-130. the australia plane was carrying 24. the dutch plane 14 bodies. after they land. they will taxi and park next door, the doors will lower and military music followed by a minute of silence. the prime minister and king and queen are attending. the bodies will be unloaded in three waves. after the moment of silence,

they will be taken to another location to haversham where the identification process will begin. matt. >> katy, some of the victims, the identification process, will be a long and difficult one. the families will have to wait to get the remains of the loved ones until that process is complete. >> obviously, the netherlands paid a heavy price. we will check back in with katy in a lit. we have breaking news. pro-russian rebels are accused of shooting down two fighter jets. nbc's keir simmons has that story. good morning to you, keir. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. this has happened near the mh-17 wreckage in that direction. we saw two fighter jets from ukraine in the air. then this youtube video, unverified by nbc news, appears them being shot down. you see a white plume of smoke

and then burning wreckage strewn around. the pro-russian separatists are saying things eerily similar to the mh-17. let's try to find the black boxes and the pilots. there were four crew on board. we can hear ukrainian jets in the air. we think they are looking for them, too. we heard shelling in the last half an hour, savannah, perhaps two explosions. >> that we need any reminder this is an active war zone you are standing in. keir, i know investigators were back there today. what are they finding? >> reporter: they have been looking at wreckage like. this this is the plane's tail. look how much it is in tact. you can see down here how it is ripped away from the main body of the plane. in that direction is the nose of the plane. in that direction is the fuselage. you get the picture that the

whole thing seems to have broken up in the sky. potentially hit by this missile that itself breaks up in shrapnel. you can see where there are marks where the shrapnel appears to have hit it, savannah. that is what the investigators are looking for. mostly, they will want to try to take this away from the area during this war to a place to examine it. the question is will they do that? >> keir, forgive me, it seems strange you are allowed to get close to the wreckage. is that still not secured? >> reporter: it isn't at all. we are being careful. we are walking around it. we are not touching it at any point. it is completely open. there is pretty much no one here right now. no inspectors, no separatists or militia. there is so much to look at, savannah, in a wide area, they have to go to different places on each day. that gives you a picture of how

long this inquiry will take. >> keir simmons at the crash site. thank you. in the wake of the violence in the middle east, the faa has suspended all u.s. flights to israel. a move that angered israeli officials and something that secretary of state john kerry will have to address after he flew there overnight. nbc's kate snow joins us from tel aviv. >> reporter: good morning, matt. secretary kerry is here to meet with israelis in tel aviv as well as the u.n. secretary-general and he'll also go to the west bank where he'll meet with palestinians. all in an effort to broker a ceasefire deal here. in the meantime, the israelis are upset with america to keep the flights from coming in and out of the aircraft. airport. ironically one of the only international flights leaving tel aviv this morning is bound for ukraine where the malaysia air jet was shot down. canceled, canceled, canceled.

your flight? >> no. our flight is okay. >> reporter: but a lot of americans are stuck. >> my flight got canceled. i'm on a waiting list. >> reporter: this man is trying to get home to brooklyn. clara fisher just wants out of here. >> every flight is canceling. it's just something seriously wrong. >> some of the rockets hamas is firing come too close to comfort to the ben gurion airport for those american air carriers. >> reporter: here's what prompted all the american airlines and many european carriers to stop flights in and out of tel aviv. yesterday a rocket from gaza hit this house just a couple miles from the airport. we're lucky, he says. my daughter and her kids weren't home. look what they've done, his wife cries. i wish they'd all die. overnight and into this morning, the israeli shelling of gaza continued with more civilian

casualties including a 7-year-old girl hit by a shell. israel says palestinian militants are still trying to tunnel into israel, like they did here on monday. they came right over there, yeah? this man and his unit just part of the massive israeli operation along the gaza border. despite the fighting going on down south, israelis admit it is safe to fly. former new york city mayor mike bloomberg is actually on his way here now. matt, the faa is not deciding to extend the ban, but delta will not be flying here anytime soon. also the same goes for air france and the two largest airlines of germany. matt. >> kate snow in tel aviv.

thank you. and you are falling a deadly air crash. >> the plane has crashed making an emergency landing carrying 58 people. nbc's tom costello is in the washington bureau. tom, what can you tell us? >> reporter: it is about 10:00 p.m. in taiwan. this happened off the main island of taiwan near magong. we are told a plane, an atr-72, a twin engine touurbo was makina flight into the area. a typhoon hitting with heavy wind and rain. the plane tried to make an emergency landing or make a botched landing attempt and go around. that did not go well. when they tried to land at 7:06 local time, in inclement weather, they lost contact with the tower and apparently crashed.

47 dead and as many as 7 injured. this is a domestic flight from one taiwanese city to another. this plane crashing on an island off the main island. back to you. >> tragic story there. tom costello there. thanks. a southwest airlines flight from baltimore to chicago made an emergency landing in columbus, ohio after a warning light indicated smoke in the cargo hold. 54 passengers and crew members used emergency chutes to evacuate safely. wetter and cooler weather has helped make progress against the largest wildfire in washington state's history. with more rain in the forecast, they hope too much moisture there doesn't lead to flash floods. the carlton complex fire has burned more than 250,000 acres. more than 2,100 firefighters and support crew are battling the flames. more than two and a half

years after it capsized off the italian island of giglio, the "costa concordia" is making its final voyage. 14 vessels will tow the ship to the port of genoa at the pier in italy where it will be broken up for scrap. the ship will move almost at a walking pace and is expected to arrive at port on sunday. 32 people died when it struck a reef and capsized back in january of 2012. and a recall to tell you about of baby cribs. the manufacturer is recalling 14,000 cribs. according to the consumer product safety commission, the top rail can detach and pose a hazard for the child. the sparrow cribs between

january of 2007 and january of 2014. chrysler is recalling 800,000 older model jeep suvs for switch problems. it is the second recall this year. the engine can switch off if the driver hits a bump and killing power steering and setting off the air bags. the recall effects the 2005 and 2007 jeep cherokee. a huge honor for singer billy joel. the piano man will receive the gershwin prize. it honors individuals for lifetime achievement in popular music. in a statement, the library of congress called billy joel, quote, a story teller of the highest order. we agree with that.

here is a whale of a tale. a pair of kayakers wouldn't soon forget. this happened off the coast of argentina. they saw a couple of whales. they paddled. they got too close because one of the whales swam under them and lifted their kayak out of the water. you can see they are a little bit startled there. but otherwise they were okay. eventually the whale goes on its way. >> i noticed that whale has a patch of dry skin. >> can you imagine? that would be terrifying. >> good thing you are wearing a wet suit. we are talking about more severe weather in the northwest. the president declaring washington state a state of emergency because of the wildfires. they are getting a lot of rain ♪

>> as we talked off the top, police in new york city are investigating a security breach at the iconic brooklyn bridge. someone managed to scale it in the dead of night and replace the large american flags with bleached out ones. nbc's ron mott is on the story this morning. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning to you. the brooklyn bridge, it's one of this city's most prized possessions. you can imagine there were people upset seeing two white flags flying over this bridge instead of the red, white, and blue. flaggate has unfolded in new york city. old glory has been returned to her perches hours after a pair of mysterious white flags were taken down. and that's got a lot of people asking questions. for starters, post-9/11, how could anybody climb the heavily guarded brooklyn bridge, pass locked gates, and put up two white flags.

>> no matter what the motive was, that is a matter of concern. i'm not particularly happy about the event. >> at this time it appears it has no particular nexus to terrorism or even politics. >> reporter: police say it began at 3:10 a.m. when security cameras recorded four or five people crossing the bridge. at about 3:30 the lights illuminating the flags on the brooklyn side flicker off. 12 minutes later the lights on the manhattan side go dark. at around 5:30, as the sun was coming up, construction workers noticed the flags had turned white. this shows part of caper. one moment the flag lights are on, then off. this embarrassment for the city comes as mayor de blasio vacations in europe. which has brought criticism and adds to other security slip ups. both at one world trade center. last fall, three men climbed to the top of the tower and

his wife for going overboard in expanding the 10,000 square foot house. reportedly in the same neighborhood as madonna and bruce willis. >> hi, i'm michael moore. >> reporter: ever since his 1989 documentary "roger & me." >> you think it's dangerous hanging out with guns in a bank? >> reporter: and other documentaries, moore had built a blue collar anti-capitalist image. >> i am one person. this is a movement of millions of voices. >> reporter: slamming the 1% at this occupy wall street protest. the new court documents reveal moore and his now ex-wife shared properties in michigan and new york. the detroit news reports the couple owned nine total. no comment from her lawyer. and moore's attorney would only say the couple has mutually and amicably reached a divorce settlement. >> smart for him to settle this matter.

even if he could have gotten more money, it is important to his public image that he not be bickering with his wife of 20 years and having all of that dirty laundry exposed. >> reporter: already exposed what some in the small michigan town feel is a contradiction. for "today," goout gabe gutierres, nbc news. let's get a check of the weather from al roker. >> it's a hot steamy mess and it's going to hang that way for 24 hours. then we have this front push through and things get cooler. this upper level ridge really dominating out west. but the jet stream takes a dip. until we get that front through, it's going to feel like 95 degrees in new york city, 96 in hartford. but behind the front, look at this. traverse city, michigan, 12 degrees below normal. same in detroit. then out west where the ridge bubbles up, las vegas is going to be 110 degrees today.

>> reporter: good morning. i'm standing in what are about 50 mile-per-hour winds right now. that's far less than the 70 mile-per-hour winds of just a category 1 hurricane. let me take you outside here and you can see the wall of wind is created by these 105 fans. they can crank it up to 120 miles per hour. and it's those sort of intense winds that created the damage to this manufactured home. but it may surprise you as to why. when hurricane-force winds take aim at a home -- >> increasing wind speed to 100 miles an hour. >> reporter: -- it doesn't take much for it to begin to fall apart. at just 81 miles per hour, this manufactured home starts to fail. and as the wind increases to 100 miles per hour, the roof rips off. watch it again in slow motion. engineers at the insurance institute for business and safety say it's not the

manufactured home that's the problem. it's the carport attached to the home that created the opening that caused the roof to fly off. when hurricane charlie hit florida's gulf coast in 2004, inspectors found 80% of the damage to manufactured homes were because of those add-ons like carports or patios. >> we see winds getting under those and pushing up. they can tear open the house. >> reporter: test engineers here have tested traditionally built homes can be just as vulnerable. but proof it is possible to build a stronger edition of the manufactured homes. you've got a post against the house. >> what it does is hold the roof of the carport down next to the house. so we don't have the full force of the wind in the house. >> reporter: that properly built

kerry says some progress has been made towards ending 16 days of warfare that's left hundreds of people dead. meantime u.s. and european airlines are standing by their decision tuesday to cancel air flights to israel because of safety concerns. the faa later issued its own 24-hour flight ban. the israeli government protested the the actions which came after a rocket fired from gaza landed near tel aviv's ben gurion airport. a southwest airlines flight from baltimore to chicago made an emergency landing overnight in columbus, ohio, after a warning light indicated smoke in the cargo hold. 54 passengers and crew members used emergency chutes to evacuate safely. the plane was taken out of service while crews searched for the cause of the smoke. a huge honor for billy joel, the piano man will receive the prize for popular song. joel is just the sixth recipient of the prize.

back up for awhile. but then it was taken down again. there's no confirmation if it's facebook taking it down or not. but one woman apparently found her photo on the site, she told us i'm thankful i have enough confidence and self-esteem. i love myself big or small. if i knew the person, i would tell them it didn't bring me down. i'm still me. thank goodness she has that attitude. the faces are not blurred on the site, but we showed you some of the photos blurred out. we have reached out to facebook as we mentioned. and they say the page violates their community standards. they allow users to speak freely but take action on all reports of abusive behavior directed at private individuals which looking at that, i would say it is. >> it's disgusting. and you wonder about the kind of person who takes the time and energy to build a page to shame people like that.

>> dr. davis and dr. loker. good morning. good to have you here. lots of good health headlines this week. let's start with this interesting study that found a possible link between vasectomies and prostate cancer. can you explain this? >> this is out of the clinical journal of oncology where they surveyed 50,000 men. of these 50,000 men over a 12-year period, 6,000 were diagnosed with prostate cancer. what they noticed was there was a slightly includesed risk of more aggressive cancer in men with vasectomies. they don't know why this was the case. there was a very small increase. and some proposed it could be cell changes in the prostate or hormonal changes to the prostate because of the vasectomy. but it's unclear. as of right now what to do, i wouldn't do anything. i think more research needs to be done. i think vasectomy is a very

family-based decision. you should stick with that until there's more reason why. >> okay. let's move on to our next headline. this is a terrible story about the dangers of caffeine powder. we had this story in ohio where a teenager died after using it. what is it? >> it's perfectly legal and you can get it on the internet. you know how teens are always trying new things. and if you think about it, jolt has about 280 milligrams of caffeine. a teaspoon of this has 1600 milligrams of caffeine. if you dissolved it in water, you're getting a huge dose of caffeine. it can cause anxiety, seizure, erratic heartbeat, arrhythmias. cough fine toxici caffeine toxicity is a serious thing. kids don't think about that. >> and they're also inhaling it

headlines, chrysler is recalling older model jeep suvs for an ignition switch problem. the engine could shut off if a driver's knee bumps the switch out of the on position disabling the air bags. the recall affects the 2005 to 2007 jeep grand cher key and the 2006 and 2007 jeep demander. there may be a link between pain of childbirth and postpartum depression. those who had an epidural were less likely to feel depressed. pain management may be key in reducing postpartum depression even if it's through non-medicated ways like meditati meditation. this is according to a study cited in the l.a. times. researchers tracked more than 7 million people for up to 42 years and they found that people
