morning. >> "today in the bay's" kris sanchez joins us now, this is a flight that disappeared over what some people are saying is hostile territory. >> certainly the faa thinks it is hostile territory. it disappeared about 50 minutes into a four hour flight. it disappeared from the radar, communication with that crew stopped near the algerian border. the associated foreign press sighting an unnamed air algerie company source reports it was asked to make a detour because of poor visibility. look at the map though, it is an area where the source says the plane goes from burkina faso to algeria and that's where communications stopped. it goes over the shah hair ra desert and over maly, a country in turmoil since an attempted coup three two years ago. it is an md 83 that looks like this one. it's operated by air algerie but

owned by swiftair. that airline put out a statement saying there is no communication with the aircraft on board the plane are 110 passengers, six crew members of which two are pilots and four are flight attendants. at this time, company emergency personnel are working to find out what happened. looking again at that map, sources say it was a routine route, but one that the federal aviation administration, the faa considers to be a potentially hostile route where civil aircrafts are at risk of encountering antiaircraft fire and air defense missiles. to be clear, we don't know what happened yet, but comes a week after malaysian airlines flight 17 was shot down over hostile territory over ukraine, so that certainly adds to the intrigue and certainly people just want to know where this plane is. >> right, it's so strange what's been happening. >> very tough time for travelers. >> exactly, we'll keep checking on the story constantly. also developing now in the middle east, four hours after

the faa listed its ban on u.s. flights to israel, hamas fired rockets into tel aviv. the iron dome it was fired into. the faa imposed a 20 hour ban after a rocket landed near the airport on tuesday. it was supposed to last through this morning but was lifted late last night after the faa decided it would safe enough to land in tel aviv. this morning residents surveyed the damage from the overnight air strikes, before the sun came up, 29 more people were killed, including six members of the same family. so far in that conflict, more than 720 palestinians have been killed, along with 35 israelis. secretary of state john kerry is in the middle east. he's reported some progress towards a ceasefire, but a top israeli leader says a truce in the coming days is unlikely. to add to the trouble, israel is transferring power.

today, there will be a new president. he's in strong opposition to creating a palestinian state in that country. also developing, armed officers guarding the noor re january borders, that threat involves people fighting in syria, but isn't clear if people behind the threat are in norway or trying to get in. information came from out the country. investigators do not know the specific targets or dates, but think it's planned for the next couple of days. apparent copper wire thief dead this morning. investigators say he was electrocuted right in the act. "today in the bay's" stephanie chuang joins us live in oakland. this is a factory stephanie that's been targeted, but been vacant for quite some time. >> reporter: that's right, good morning to you, scott. this area if i could describe it, 100,000 square foot empty building next to a 250,000 square foot. what used to house the american steel building.

sop a very industrial and abandoned area. if you look at the map, it's in west oakland at west grand and mandela parkway. it was around about 9:00 last night when more than a dozen oakland police officers, as well as medic ace reporting lived at the pacific pipe company responding to report of an electrical shot victim. the man was found electrocuted, pronounced dead at the scene. he suffered major burns consistent with handling live voltage wires leading police to believe that he had been trying to steel the copper wiring there in the vacant building. presumably because its been empty for years, the man may not have thought that the wires would carry any current. still unclear where and how he got electrocuted. we do know copper thefts have been on the rise across the bay area. for example, one this year happened at the san jose vta station. santa clara county sheriff's office sent out this picture of a man who they suspect of stealing more than $10,000 worth of copper wire. that was on january 31st, and

it's nationwide according to the national insurance crime bureau. they've tripled to 33,000 almost from 2010 up to 2012. that's up three times to a few years early. stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." >> stephanie, thank you. it is 5:06, police are looking for witnesses in a potential knockout game attack in palo alto. happened a week ago near university avenue. the victim was crossing the street when a man walking in the other direction suddenly punched him in the side of the head knocking him out. suspect ran off and passer by helped the victim to the police station. officers say no similar cases have been reported in palo alto, but the knockout game in which people randomly punch strangers has been popular elsewhere around the country. police want your help finding an accused identity thief wanted for crimes in two counties. this man, matthew robert claire it is a suspect in a number of burglarie burglaries, car thefts, identity

thefts in monterrey counties. he's 5'5". hopes of bringing the olympic games to the bay area. "today in the bay's" bob redell joins us live at levi stadium in santa claire ka this morning. the home could be used as one of the olympic venues. >> reporter: yes, laura, assuming or region wants to host the olympics in 2024, then assuming that the international olympics committee were to choose us as the host. the thing is the u.s. olympic committee hasn't even decided yet if it wants to submit a u.s. city for consideration, but if it does, it has whittled down its choices to four cities. four places in the united states. what's happening today, representatives from the four cities mainly san francisco, los angeles, boston, and washington, d.c. will be meeting the u.s. oc at its headquarters in contradiction representing the -- colorado springs.

now this meeting is strictly informational, it's to go over the cost and details of submitting a bid. for instance, where would the events be held. those are some of the details. san francisco olympics would be region wide, levi stadium would most certainly be a venue. not clear if at&t park or other arenas and stadiums in the area would play a role. let's say the u.s. decides to submit a bid, it must select one of the four u.s. cities early next year. the international olympic committee would then make its decision in 2017. other international cities thought to be vying for the 2024 games, doha, paris, istanbul, and rome. reporting live here in santa clara, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> let's go bay area, thanks a lot, bob. let's check in with meteorologist christina loren with a look at the forecast, though today's double duty for christina. >> yeah, thanks for making me feel so excited about it.

59 degrees in half moon bay. double the duty, the same pay. 61 degrees in san francisco. you know what, i get to live in the bay area more importantly, i get to do weather in the bay area. so i kind of have the best job in the entire world. 62 in concord, scene 64 degrees in oakland. all right, let's talk about something that's so awesome and you're only going to be able to see it for a little while longer. i want to show you this live picture of san jose. you can see what's left of the moon by the way, another super moon on august 6th. don't forget that. look at this spot up here, that my friends is venus. and you can see it out there this morning. yeah, check your stargazer apps, got to love that we have it this day and age. you can still see it. and that'll be the case for the next ten minutes or so. so walk on outside if you didn't see it, and yeah, beautiful, beautiful start. it's nice and clear. five to ten degrees warmer today. that is the one thing that people probably aren't going to be that happy about. temperatures are going to start to reflect the summer time heat that we're so acustomed to in

the bay area. whr we get the heat waves, the summer so far only lasted five or six days. this one could go on for ten, maybe even 15 days. we're talking about 10 to 15 days potentially of above average weather. and for us that starts up today. 91 degrees in the south bay. we are going to lose that humidity. it'll be that try heat we're used to, but it'll be hot out there. 89 degrees on the peninsula. 85 on the east shore. we had it so nice lately i don't want this to catch you offguard. be ready for a hot day. great news is your beaches, you can get relief out there. . all right, let's switch gears, also your morning drive, we are accident-free at this point. and i can tell you, we have a little construction to talk about, and disabled vehicle as well. westbound 580 at flinn, stalled car in the middle lane there, that is creating some significant backups at this time. there's a crew on the scene getting ready to clear that out, however, this could slow you down. you want to give yourself a little extra time in that area.

you're watching "today in the bay." good morning to you, 5:14 right now. well that's a pretty look outside. kind of an ominous look. little mix of the clouds, the fog, red light there, san francisco, nice start to our morning. it's 5:14. new this morning, the government says we've collectively saved a total of $9 billion of health insurance premiums because of the affordable care act. now the report also says last year alone consumers saved almost $4 billion. it says that number will go up once millions in refunds come through. the government says 6.8 million people are due to get an average refund of $80. under a new rule, insurers have to spend at least 80% of the premiums people pay on patient care or provide a refund.

major makeover this morning, fire square, it's trying to rebrand itself. four square trying to shift away from checking in at locations and helping people instead find things close to them. the goal is basically to be a stronger competitor to yelp and google. let's keep an eyes of shares of facebook this morning. shares jumped after hours in trading. we are live at cnbc headquarter rs with the latest, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, scott. we'll get to facebook, but let's look at the markets because futures right now higher after what was a mixed daddy on wall street earnings will definitely be in focus. we heard from apple and boeing yesterday. s&p 500 index, broadest measure closing at a record high for the 26th time this year, so a lot of focus on the s&p 500 which is also closing in on 2000 in major market milestone that traders have on their radar.

inland valley spots. south bay, we're going to get a taste of the 90s. we been in the 80s for the past ten days, you'll notice that difference. 91 degrees for the south bay today. 89 on the peninsula. 85 for the east shore, and 78 degrees in san francisco, a beautiful day shaping up for you in the city by the bay. that heat will come on stronger through tomorrow in the city, you're talking about temperatures in the mid-80s. you'll be in the low 80s by saturday, great beach weather this weekend. and we're still holding on to that warm water. we'll talk about that coming up in my next report. that's the weather story we're going to dive in into. right now let's switch gears and talk about your drive, mike has the day off, he will be back, i promise you that much. as you can see here, in red on the map, we're looking really good. this could catch you offguard, westbound 580, we have that stalled car there blocking the middle lane and delays are stacking up. it'll take you about 10 to 15 minutes longer than normal. keep that in mind. otherwise whereby we're looking

complete use of as a member of of the public is the public safety components of this building. >> the district argues the building will be used as an emergency center. coming up toont, the final plans of the project suggest otherwise, and the implications it has for thousands of special districts across the state operating with little oversight. that's tonight at 11:00 on nbc bay area. san francisco is changing its human resources rules after supervisor had an affair with an aid. right now hr polts requires employees to notify a supervisor if they are romantically involved with another employee in the workplace. the trouble is john abbalas did not have a supervisor and had no one to report to. according to the chronicle, the city is changing the follows members of the board of supervisors report any affairs to the clerk of the board. the palo alto fire department bringing another ambulance in in hopes of rebranding itself as an emergency medical service. according to the weekly, the department is responding to a

survey completed in may that suggests residents think emergency medical services are more important than fire suppression. the fire chief told the paper the department is still committed to training employees to fight fires, but it'll also begin devoting more resources to medical training. the fight continues to keep a peninsula ymca open. tonight members of the page mill facility will have a special meeting with a ymca of silicon valley board of directors to discuss the closure. them the board to extend the lease at facility and reconsider its decision to close. the ymca says the closure has to do with money because the current location needs millions of dollars in repairs. well it's 5:22, new members only spot opening up at at&t park. we'll tell you about it. >> made me think of the jacket.

"today in the bay's" kris sanchez is following the story for us, kris, plane just vanished mid-flight. >> reporter: right, no disstressed calls that we can report this morning, but we know it was about 50 minutes into what was supposed to be a four hour flight when it disappeared from radar and communication with that crew stopped near the algerian border.

now the burkina faso transporter said the pilots asked for a change of course because of a storm. the flight was departed from burkina faso when communications stopped it. goes over the shah hair ra desert and mali. the plane is an md 83 that looks like this one. it's competitored to be a workhorse of a fleet operated by air algerie, but owned by swiftair. this morning, that airline, swiftair put out a statement reading up to now, there is no communication with the aircraft. on board the plane are 110 passengers and six crew members of which two are pilots and four are flight attendants. at this time, company emergency personnel are working to find out what happened. looking at that map again, sources say it was a routine route, but one of the federal aviation administration, the faa considers to be potentially

hostile going over mali where civil aircraft are at risk of encounter fire and air defense missiles. to be clear, we don't know what happened, but this comes a week after malaysian airline flight 17 was shot down over hostile territory over ukraine, but now we are starting to hear rumblings that perhaps it crashed. we're also hearing that there were storms in the area. we're going to collect some of that information, we'll bring that to you next time we see you. >> thank you. also new this morning, one man dead, another critically injured on a car crash. highway 101 santa clara, happened around midnight. this is near the parkway. while the car was on northbound 101, it couldn't make a turn, it flipped, and flipped five times. the passenger died at the scene, the driver taken to stanford hospital where life -- with life threatening injuries. all northbound lanes were closed for three hours, but open right now. it happened around 101 that's

seen two other deadly crashes just in the last week. it is 5:32, and today we could hear from the man accused of intentionally starting 13 fires in san jose. patrick brennan waived his right to enter a plea in april. he might enter one at a hearing today. he's charged with a ten counts of arson and three counts of attempted arson. prosecutors say he admitted he knew there were people in most of the buildings before he set them on fire. because he is a history arsonists and sex offender, prosecutors say he faces several life terms in prison if convicted. apparent copper wire theft turned deadly. a man died after trying to steel copper from a vacant factory. development area because of the empty buildings. pacific pipe factories, 100,000 square foot vacant factory. in west oakland at west grand and mandela parkway. police officers as well as medics arrived which as graffiti all over it, all around it. responding to the report of an electrical shock victim. the man was found electrocuted and pronounced dead at the scene. he suffered major burns consistent with handling live voltage wires leading police to believe that he had been trying to steel the copper wiring and of course presumably because of the factory has been vacant for years, he may not have thought wires would be carrying electric current. we know copper thefts and attempts have been on the rise across the bay area and can be dangerous. last fall, uc berkeley got national attention after an explosion on campus. that was later linked to copper wire thieves who used equipment to steel copper lines. one person was hurt and 20

people had been trapped in elevators. we know that the copper prices have been on the rise, trading at $3.20, and that's up about four times in value compared to just ten years ago. live in oakland this morning, stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." >> stephanie, thank you. investigators are dusting a shotgun and shells for fingerprints hoping to figure out who left a loaded gun at an elementary school. it was found at lincoln elementary by children on tuesday. police think gang members stashed it there for easy access to it later. it's a new thing gang members are doing so they're not caught with their weapons in their possession, but still have them around tos you. they call them community guns. >> the marbles rolled under the building, saw what they thought was a gone, they went home, this occurred last night, they told their mom about it. mom said just tell the staff in

the morning. >> i'm in shock. the kids come to play, they will think it's a toy. and a tragedy's going to hit us right there. >> dangerous. the neighborhood is known for gang activity. happening now, police searching the south bay and pence last for this man with dementia. he walked away from a hospital yesterday morning. his name is henry scott, he was last seen walking away from stanford hospital. he does have dementia, also high blood pressure, police say scott takes buss in san mateo and santa clara county, they're asking bus riders to look out for him. six flakes discovery kingdom should be back open today after a small grass fire shut down part of the park. it started just outside the park yesterday afternoon. ember from the fire landed on the roof of the thriller gorilla ride. it was not in operation. it will remain closed until it is inspected and found to be safe to operate.

several other attractions were shut down temporarily as well. the good news is no one was hurt. big vote today for people hoping to preserve scenic parklands and wildlife habitat around silicon valley. the santa clara county open space authority is thinking about putting a new tax on the november ballot. this $24 per parsele tax would raise money over 150 # 15 years. it would expand open space reserves. if the agency puts the measure on the ballot, people in san jose, santa clara, campbell, and milpitas. >> there are some people places in the bay area, i can't get over the sunrise this morning, christina. >> yeah, and you had venus behind you for a little while this morning. that was pretty cool. baby, she's got it. 61 degrees, i'm talking to you scott mcgrew. 64 in oakland, and of course i'm referring to laura garcia-cannon.

morning to you, oakland, and o.co. we'll get to baseball news in a minute. but we have developing news, new rockets fired into israel overnight. the latest violence coming just hours after the faa lifted flight restrictions into tel aviv's airport. secretary of state john kerry working towards some kind of ceasefire. tracy potts live on capitol hill with the very latest, good morning to you. >> reporter: hey scott, good morning, that ceasefire's not coming fast, while kerry says they've made steps forward, they're identifying what the israelis and palestinians are going to require, the minimum just to get the rockets to stop so they can deal with the other issues. now speaking of rockets, five more came down early this morning in israel, one just two miles from the airport where the faa just allowed flights to resume from the united states, no word if that will affect their late night decision to lift that ban on u.s. flights, u.s. flights going into and out of the airport.

we do know that those flights, some carriers are scheduling to resume those flights today. also in israel, the united nations is condemning an israeli rocket that they say hit one of the united nations schools in gaza. it was being used as a shelter for about 1500 people there. and there were staff there as well when that happened. still no diplomatic solutions to ending the violence between israel and the palestinians. secretary kerry still overseas working on that. >> all right, tracy potts, thank you very much. in the men time, students from san jose state will hold a peace vigil tonight to honor those killed in the conflict. it's part of the national day of action. the vigil will begin at 7:00 tonight, san jose city hall, similar events will be taking place today across the country. now to the latest in the malaysian plane shot down in ukraine. two more dutch military planes carrying remains of some of the victims will arrive in the

netherland this morning. it's the second round of victims to arrive. yesterday, two planes carrying 40 wooden coffins arrived. and thousands of dutch lined the 60 mile route as the bodies were driven from the airport. the u.s. state department says up to 100 victims may still be missing. well 5:45, christina loren doing double duty today, meteorologist and traffic as mike gets a well-deserved break. >> yeah, he doesn't take much vacation time. he deserves it. what's funny is we're both going to be in hawaii at the same time. i can't tell anybody, that's a big secret. 5:45 now, yeah, you have to love the bay area. a lot of people like to come here this time of year. and they're going to get spoiled for one more day, maybe. it just depends on where you're going to be. those microclimates making a big impact over the past few days, the separation between your coastal communities versus those inland, 10, 15 degrees at best. today the 25 to 35 degree spread take place which means if you

want the cooler weather, you know where to go, head west, young man, head west. as we head throughout the day today, these numbers are really mild out there. at the coast, it's even going to be warm in san francisco, and half moon bay when you hit the mid-70s. that's when the locals complain about the heat. it is one of those days you'll get the 70s in half moon day. that heat really cranks, it's going to peak tomorrow. high pressure will be strong tomorrow. and here's the deal with the heat, we're going to stick with it for quite some time, you'll notice that. temperatures after today don't fluctuate all that much. we'll get a taste of summer that lasts. heat surges today, getting into tomorrow, about three to five degrees warmer, then over the weekend, it's going to be on the hot side. you'll get great beach weather and warm ocean temperatures still. we're going to talk about that just one moment. 91 degree in the south bay today. 85 degrees on the east shore.

78 degrees in san francisco, unseasonably warm there. and even warmer as we head through tomorrow, you'll be in the 80s in the city. 77 degrees on sunday in san francisco, and 74 for monday. even as we take a little bit of the heat off, it's still going to be rather warm out there. the 90s in the south bay, oh yeah, that's toasty by our standards. 5:47 now, let's look at your drive, mike has the day off as we told you, you know what, everybody behaving out there. we don't have any serious crashes to report at this point. still have that sluggish drive. this is the only place where it's going to take you maybe 10 to 15 minutes longer than usual to get through westbound 580 at flinn. stalled car, middle lane, it is cleared at this point, residual delays, but yeah, you're backed up for five to ten minutes longer than usual as more people hit the highway, this is a bad spot anyway, it's just one of those mornings you could be a little bit late to work if you don't account for this. otherwise, we'll keep you updated, everything looking good out there, back to you for now. 5:47, new details this

morning, investigators say stormy weather caused a taiwanese airplane to crash on a small island yesterday killing 48 people. that crash happened while the plane was trying to land during the tail end of a typhoon. the official ruling comes as relatives of the victim travel to the island to identify they're loved ones. they include 46 taiwanese and two french medical students who were interns in taiwan. ten people did survive. it took almost two hours for an arizona inmate to die. joseph rudolph wood was put to death by lethal injection yesterday. it was supposed to take about ten minutes. he gaps hundreds of times after the injections and didn't die until 1:57 minutes later. arizona's governor ordered a full review of the state's execution pros. this is the third botched. inmate in ohio took 26 in january and oklahoma died of a

heart attack when the drugs didn't after they were not administrated properly. long man beach does in the regret killing a woman who said she was pregnant when she and another man broke into his home. >> she says don't shoot me, i'm pregnant, and i shot her anyway. >> 80-year-old tom greer said he got home tuesday night to find the couple ransacking his home. they tackled him, but he got away and got his gun. the couple ran out the back door, but greer tracked them to the alley behind his house and shot the woman. as she lay bleeding, greer says she begged for her life and he fired anyway. the man got away. >> i shot her so that's going to leave a message on his mind for the rest of his life. >> greer was treated at the hospital for severe shoulder injury and a collarbone injury. long beach police say they're still investigating and have not said whether greer will face charges. it's unclear if, at this the point, the woman was actually pregnant. well california wine collector will be sentenced

today for selling up to $20 million worth of fake wine. rudy canawan was convicted in december. he manufactured fake bottles of wine, sold them as vintage wine. he's expected to serve 11 years in prison. he will be deported once he's freed. it's 5:50 right now, president obama is in los angeles this morning to meet with college students. president arrived in southern california yesterday afternoon, he'll visit a community college later today to talk about the importance of job driven skills training. specifically for health care jobs. he plans to talk about the economy. president obama's arrival in southern california almost coincided with another less predictable arrival. take a look at this video, posted on instagram. it shows a pregnant woman in labor who couldn't cross the street to the hospital because of the presidential motorcade. it's unclear exactly how long she waited, but police say shed eventually made is to the

hospital in time. for that one, i hope so. its been a while. before headed to los angeles, the president was in the bay area for a whirlwind fund raising trip. pair of fundraisers, one at the four seasons hotel, the other one at the home of real estate mogul george marcus. they vet the about a million. his trip was not without criticism, protesters say the president should not be out raising money with so many international issues to handle. representatives from the bay area will be in colorado today making case to bring the olympics to the bay. the olympic committee hasn't decided if it wants to submit officially a u.s. city for consideration, but if it does, it's whittled it down to four places. san francisco, los angeles, boston, and washington, d.c. today representatives from those four american cities meeting with the committee in colorado springs. here's a list of the representatives from the bay
