know that. it left about 1:17 a.m. local time. it disappeared 15 minutes into the flight from radar. the transport minister says the plane asked to change routes because of a bad stand storm in the airline. the airlines says half the passengers were french. it was an older mcdonald douglas plane built in the mid-90s, we believe. flying over mali, where they are firing in the north. they don't believe anybody on the ground has the fire power to bring down a commercial airliner. two french fighter jets based in the area have been now dispatched to try to locate the crash scene, niger has sent crash planes to search the area. this was operated by a spanish company, swift air. it has a relevant tiverly clean record with five accidents since 1977, two of which caused a

total of ten deaths. again, for the sign of this plane flying over west africa, 110 passengers on board, a crew of six. >> i'm sitting here with al roker. he tells me there was some severe weather in that area. were there no distress calls or transmission to shed light on this? >> reporter: not yet. but this is in one of those areas in the world, west africa, where you don't sometimes have the best tracking of aircraft. you are right, what was described to us was a very big sand storl in the area. >> all right, tom cot tell lo, thank you very much. the debate over the death penalty raised again, a lot of questions asked after a convicted murderer in arizona took nearly two hours to die byletal injection, a process that should have lasted a few minutes. we have the latest on this story, halle, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, arizona's governor wants a

review of this execution. a district court is ordering the state to preserve evidence. witnesses described the scene during the hour and 57 minutes it took to execute joseph wood. >> we hear a deep snoring sucking air sound. this went on for more than an hour-and-a-half. >> reporter: family members of the victim see nothing wrong with what happened in there everybody is more worried about, did he suffer? who really suffered were my dad and my sister when they were killed report. wood has been on death row since those murders in 1989. his lawyers appealed, the combination used in an execution that took 25 minutes in ohio in january. >> why did the state use those same two drugs for mr. woods' execution, i don't know? >> reporter: the aclu wants executions put on hold. governor jan brewer says while

she is concerned about the length of the execution, it was legal. for jeanie brown, she was waiting for years to have her family's killer put to death. it was simply two more hours waiting for justice. >> this man deserves it. i shouldn't call him a man. he deserves everything he had coming to him. >> reporter: remember it was a botched execution in oklahoma this spring that set off the debate about usingletal injection, in that instance the person was announced dead after 43 minutes. >> thank you. meanwhile, more victims from malaysia air flight 17 are being returned to the netherlands this morning. another emotional scene after wednesday's homecoming for the first time, it is believed it is a national day of mourning. katie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, patt, 74 more victims have just landed at the airport. they have been given much of the same pomp and circumstance and ceremony as the victims were

it came to a dramatic end with a highway chase on foot. >> reporter: the chase began when the pair, carrying a rifle and handgun carjacked a subaru with three passengers still pence. it was the first of several vehicles they to steal during the nearly hour-long pursuit. >> the male and female got out of the car and took the vehicle by force. >> reporter: the two fled on mountainside on colorado's i-70 highway. the fe pail suspect, later determined to be a minor, quickly gave up and was taken into custody. the man still armed with weapons, kept going, eventually breaking into a home an busting through the garage door in another stolen car. minutes later, the suv gets stuck in mud. the suspect hops a fence and points his gun at drivers along the highway, it was then that an officer with the help of a good samaritan wrestled him to the ground.

shanesha taylor will disappear if she keeps up her end of a deal with prosecutors. >> this is a beautiful resolution to a very long, very hard journey. >> reporter: taylor was at a job interview in scottsdale, arizona, when she left her two sons, a 2-year-old and 6-month-old alone in her suv. police say both kids were in the car seats in the back, the vehicle was unlocked, the keys in the ignition, the windows rolled down about an inch. they were alone for 38 minutes and the temperature inside the car was over 100 degrees. >> my concern at that point in time was the safety and well-being of the children. >> reporter: the kids were okay, but that mugshot along with taylor's story that she couldn't find a babysitter stirred compassion. supporters raised nearly $115,000 for her. >> this is not a crime of child abuse. this is a crime of desperation. >> reporter: last week prosecutors agreed to drop the case if taylor finishes a parenting program and puts the donated money toward a trust

when did you see them? >> i saw them monday. get to see them every week end. we definitely have a lot of family time in a short two-day span. >> they must miss their mom. >> yes, yes. >> we know the circumstances. take me back to march 20th. you're going for this job interview. you three kids. you couldn't get a babysitter. you said this job was crucial. money is tight. it was a turning point for your family. but at the same time you went for this job interview you had to know that it could be hazardous to leave your children in a hot car. take me through the moment of decision. >> um, it wasn't necessarily a moment of decision. it was planned out beforehand and the plans fell through. i actually had a sitter scheduled, and that person wasn't available or just -- i guess they flaked on me, is the best way to say it. >> but then there's still a moment of decision to either cancel the job interview or go through with it. and that moment of decision went

how for you? >> it was a moment of desperation. it was me knowing my family was in crisis and knowing that i had to make a choice between providing for my children or caring for my children. >> i think the discussion that has been prompted centers around a central question. despite the circumstances, did you act reasonably and responsibly, how would you answer that question? >> that's a difficult question because it's making a choice out of desperation. it's choosing what is the best option, what is the best thing for me to do in this particular situation, be able to provide food, a roof, clothes, shoes for them or take this moment and care for them. >> so what you're saying to me is responsibility in that context is in the eye of the beholder? >> exactly. >> the money that's been raised

here, shanesha, $115,000. what are you going to do with that money? >> it's going into trust accounts for the children. >> matt, part of the deal we were able to negotiate and get the charges dismissed, we're able to have a trust fund for ms. taylor and her kids. her kids will be taken care of for the rest of their lives and that's a great thing. >> inadvertently i think, shanesha, you have become the face of the working poor in this country. so what is the message to others who find themselves in similar circumstances? >> the message is i understand your family is in crisis, but reach out, seek that help. i do understand that there are holes in the governmental system, that they don't necessarily have the funding or the programs available to help you, but there are other sectors. there are the non-profit sectors that have stepped up to fill those gaps and make sure that families in crisis are being taken care of. so just reach out. >> we asked our viewers what they thought about this

the person flaked out at the last minute. this caused a big issue. others did sympathize with her plight. she is somebody who is trying to make a better life for her kids and got in a bad place. >> you think, well, maybe you should have rescheduled the interview. i don't know. but if you're desperate, you though, maybe you're not thinking clearly at the time. >> i'm sympathetic to her story certainly, but i think parents, anybody who has a kid, the safety of your child comes first. and i know that job was important and maybe a long time coming and she needed it. my gosh, you think about what could have happened those two kids, the car over 100 degrees. she thought she would be in there 15 minutes. extended to almost 40 minutes. that's when the situation got more dangerous. thank goodness the kids are okay. should point that out. you have to take care of your kids first. >> here is what happened with the case. the district attorney, the prosecutor said he's going to dismiss the child abuse charges.

if she was successfully complete parenting and substance abuse treatment programs. she has been asked to establish an education in child care trust fund account for both of her children because, by the way, a the lot of people hearing this donated money and they actually raised $115,000. so that money is part of the plea deal will go towards the kids. by the way, she originally got the job. but once this got into the public, she lost the job. >> she is only seeing the kids on the weekend. very complicated for her. al, how about these tweets? >> we've all flown with our kids. an agent didn't like a tweet a man wrote about her certificase. southwest has this a-list priori priority. he was a-list but the kids were. he said you can board but your kids can't.

this question tricky to answer. my initial response is to say your son needs to be taught how to respect women and your daughter needs to be taught how to respect herself. and the reason i say that is because so often, it's boys who are leading girls to a place that maybe they're not ready for but they -- boys have been taught they need to rush through ifr stage in order to be cool. they are trying to rush your daughter to a place that she may not want to go so quickly. that being said, everyone knows a young woman who can be a bad influence on a guy. it's not like your son is completely off the hook. ultimately you have to teach both of them to have that jewel skill of both being able to go after what they want and have fun and flirt but also being able to respect themselves and their own standards and learning that it's not cool to move as quickly as possible. actually one of the things that will make them unique is if they don't give into peer pressure that everyone else is -- >> yeah, be different. >> smart. good advice. >> i think we even have somebody

hoda down to 16 days before she turns 50. today we bring you simple diet changes to help you lose that womanly waistline because it's happening because you sometimes eat these things. >> while some forces biology are out of our control, our food choices can make a huge difference in how and where we gain weight. here is nbc news health and diet editor madeline burgstrom. where does this go on the list? >> the lobster roll for you is a smart indulgence. it's not about deprivation. you want to have it, and there's very little mayonnaise. that's a little bit. >> i could have another bite and call it a day. >> tell us about what's happening. >> in midlife it's not your imagination that you put on weight more easily because two things happen. first is your metabolism slows. that means the same calories you ate at age 30 to maintain your weight you need about 200 calories fewer at age 50 to maintain that weight. it becomes harder. secondly, we all know that

dropping estrogen is an issue in midlife where it changes the cascade of all the hormones make it easier to get that fat in the middle when you eat more calories. the best way to combat that is to make some xhart choices. you don't have to gain that weight. >> back in the day when we were younger, we liked mashed potatoes and pasta. >> who doesn't love a nice starchy. it gives thaw mouth feel. you can swap out a few things. first you can use spaghetti squash. >> which i love spaghetti squash. angel hair pasta or zuchini linguini. >> i'm still eating my lobster roll. >> it's really good. both of them are going to be really great. it gives you that texture of having a starch. >> it tastes butter where i. buttery, but not butter in them. >> condiments is my shortfall. >> sneaky condiments.

even a table spoon of barbecue sauce can have 30 calories or so. we just slosh this on. regular mayonnaise will be a high calorie choice. try to swap out salsa or mustard. very low in calories for a little spice or even hot sauce. don't go fat free with things like mayonnaise because there's no flavor. you'll add more, and it doesn't do anything. reduced fat gives you that mouth feel effect and that mouth feel is so important because you can't be deprived or it's not -- >> i tried to switch the mustard because i love ketchup and mayo and all those creamy things. >> dips and dressings that we all use really every day. even with a big salad. you know, one no-brainer is to use greek yogurt instead of sour cream. when you follow a recipe for oil and vinegar, if you don't want to use this balsamic, do things like just reverse it. instead of two-thirds oil, just dump this in, just use one part oil and two parts vinegar. or just use all vinegar if you like. >> some of you use bottle

dressings. take something like ranch dressing, and just add some buttermilk. >> buttermilk. >> that's what ranch is based. instead of having a big fatty dress, create your own lower fat version. >> doesn't buttermilk have a lot of fat? >> it's low fat. >> i didn't realize that. >> the buttermilk is not fatty. it's a strange term for something that's low in fat. >> what about drinks? >> drinks are a big calorie sink whether it's nonalcoholic juices or todayas or a fruity alcoholic cocktail. what you want to do is swap out for something that you like. some sparkling wine. you can have club soda and dump frozen fruit right into that, or just have a splash of juice into your sparkling water. just downsize your drink. avoid the things that have no limit. even a 12 ounce bottle of regular beer, 150 calories is good. it's all -- >> it just adds up. >> it adds up, and you won't really feel that you have having calories. >> the salty snacks. >> salty snacks. salt and crunch is really important. when you think about any of these fried things, you want to get away from that and think about how to bulk up your taste

with air and fiber and water. something like popcorn will be good. even some vegetables that you have some low fat dip is going to be good, or make your own whole grain peitas without all the fad. >> you can bake it instead of fried. even mix and match. >> just quickly, the last thing. >> who wouldn't like frozen desserts? to avoid some of these things, get something that's calorie controlled. frozen yogurt on a stick or make your own, and fruit that has just a drop of chocolate on it is really satisfying and -- >> bananas with chocolate. >> oh, that's good. >> bananas are so satisfying. this really helps. grapes right out of the freezer. >> that's the best thing to do. >> grapes and cherries are really good to do. >> awesome. >> thanks, darling. happy summer. >> surprise, we have a webtastic video that will bring tears of joy to you. >> first this is "today" on nbc.
