hottest day of the year so far. heat coming on strong for the entire bay area. we will see that summer sizzle over the weekend as well, spectacular beach conditions, and some warm water out there. we have a lot to go over this morning in your microclimate weather forecast. and let's take a live look outside at san jose, good morning san jose, friday, july 25th, this is "today in the bay". from northbound bay area -- nbc bay area, this is "today in the bay." good morning everyone, thank you for joining us, i'm scott mcgrew. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. we're talking about what a hot start it'll be to the today. christina loren joins with us a look at that forecast. >> hey, good morning to you. 5:00, happy friday, thanks for waking up with us. i want to help you get out the front door if you're headed off to work right now with a couple bullet points. number one, it's going to be hot out there. number two, it's going to stay hot for quite some time, in fact above average temperatures on

the way, potentially for the next 10 to 15 days. i just to want make sure you're ready because we've been spoiled. 62 degrees in san jose right now. you're waking up at 63 in san martin, and 54 in half-moon bay where you're going to get up to the upper 70s today. half moon bay forecast high 77 degrees. meanwhile 87 in santa cruz. so if you want to check that out, see how it feels, you're going to get a very small window to do so, but we're still getting those warm temperatures. those are your tide temperatures for today. i can tell you right now, the time you want to avoid being outside is going to be between about noon and 5:00 p.m. that is the hottest point of the day. and we're talking about 102 degrees in the north bay. 90 degrees on the east shore, 99 degrees in the south bay, and the hot spot, 108 degrees as we get into this afternoon in antioch. we'll tell you a little bit of a drop off for tomorrow, what else is happening across the bay area as well.

that's coming up in just a little bit, right now back to you, scott, laura, and the rest of the top stories of the day. top story still heat, beating the heat may be harder than you think. nannette miranda may be bearing bad news. >> reporter: good morning, one park worker tells me in his 14 years on the job, he's never seen two beaches closed at the same time. here at shadow cliff in pleasanton, the southern portion of the beach has been shut down due to e. coli concerns. drought conditions here pushed geese from the once green lawns to the beaches where they've been going to the bathroom into low level water. over at lake in oakland, the problem is potentially dangerous, toxic algae in the water. now blue, green, algae blooms are not new, but the high levels detected there last week are. >> we have blue-green algae bloom for a few days and a week,

this has been going for three weeks. we don't know why this is happening. people can get stomach ailments and skin rashes from it. >> reporter: oh, don't want that. with the weather so nice yesterday, the beach closures did ruin plans to take a dip, but people took it in stride and enjoyed the water from ashore. they agree the precautions are better than swimming in tainted water. tests are being done at the cliffs, you can check with the park district to see if the southern portion has been reopened. the northern portion has been unaffected and remains open. nannette miranda for "today in the bay". ick. >> thank you very much. be sure to check nbcbayarea.com for the latest weather conditions, just click on that weather tab. now developing news, new strikes in gaza city overnight. israeli aircraft hit dozens of

homes inside the gaza strip. officials say among those killed, the leader of a militant islamic jihad group and two sons. troops are also fights on the ground. israel sl considering a pair of ceasefire proposals. one would call for five day truce, allowing both sides to negotiate new terms in the region. the fighting caused a number of european airlines to coopsle flights into tel aviv. air berlin cites security concerns. a missile landed just miles from the airport. the faa is currently allowing u.s. flights to fly into the airport. another developing story, journalists with bay area ties are reportedly being held in iran. the washington post reports jason rirks rks zon is one of four being detained. he has dual american and iranian citizenship. his wife was also taken into custody. two freelance photographers have been detained, but we do not

know who they are. and it's not clear why they're being held. well no survivors. that is the word from france's president this morning after the air algerie plane crashed in mali. french troops arrived at the crash site overnight. removed the black boxes. there was a rainstorm when the plane went down. team of french aviation experts also combing the site for clues. the remains were located on the border between mali and burkina faso. 116 people died in yesterday's crash, most of them were frerge citizens. the remains of more victims from the malaysian airlines flight 17 on their way to the netherlands. the bodies at the crash site continue to be found more than a week after the disaster that killed 298. this is the fourth plane to fly out of ukraine with remains. one left wednesday, two others on thursday. armed pro-russian separatists continue to control the crash

site, but australian officials say a true investigation cannot be conducted until the site is handed over. australia's working to send 100 police officers and some defense force personnel to the region to help a dutch-led team secure that site. it's 5:06, police in stockton are looking for a tuberculosis patient who is refusing treatment and could be infected. he was diagnosed and told to quarantine himself in a motel room. that's where a health worker would deliver medication, but crews never showed up. health officials are worried because he comes from a part of mexico known for drug resistant strains of tb. can spread through the air when an infected person coughs or nese sneezes. as a judge decides whether public can access a beach, the state coastal commission is adding a new wrinkle. they are asking the public to

fill out declarations saying they've used the private road as if it were public. if enough people fill out that declaration showing public use over the past five years, the court could establish a continued right of public access. that means even though a billionaire ownings the road, he may not have the right to block it from the public. sfrooemt getting a makeover. the city will hold a special ground breaking ceremony tonight to celebrate the start of construction on the city's new downtown area. nearly $6 million grant will help fremont transform its downtown area to something that looks like this. it'll begin with street improvement on capitol avenue and create a new commercial section downtown. so make sure attendees don't go hungry, it'll coincide with a weekly food truck event. >> sound good. well let's check your roads as we check in with christina, double duty for mike this morning. >> double, double duty. you know what, mike is so kind to me, he knows fridays are lighter than normal, and you know what, that's the kaes right

you the same hot temperatures. we'll look at that in a moment. for this morning, we're going to focus right now on the mild start and what's happening out there. we've got some pea soup fog to tell you about right at the immediate coastline. high pressure comes in, forces everything down, and that low level moisture will be visible, at least for the first few mours of the day. then it's going to burn off rapidly as we have a big ridge of high pressure coming in. it's going to burn off all that cloud cover by about 9:00 a.m. mostly clear over the entire bay area. so that's the deal for today. sun coming in early. low level fog, beautiful afternoon at the beach, but hot inland, hottest day of 2014 so far. and even after the sun drops off, temperatures are going to be really, really mild. if you have not yet invested in a fan so far this summer, might be your time to do so in the city. we're going to hold on to hot weather at least for the next five to ten potentially, ten days. oh, it's going to be hot out

there. and i can tell you right now. i'm looking 15 days out. i'm hoping area of low pressure breaks that trend. 99 for today. 97 degrees on the peninsula. it's about 90 degrees in the east shore area, 85 degrees in san francisco, and 102 degrees out in the north bay for today. this weekend, temperatures will drop off label the for tomorrow, but staying hot, you want to make chose plans to hit the beach. here we go. here are your numbers. 92 degrees on sunday in san jose, 76 degrees meanwhile for san francisco, and let's switch gears and talk about your drive because overall, you know it's going to be hot. you don't know what's going to happen on the roadways when you leave your house this morning. everything is pretty mild. we told you earlier about this situation on 17 involving a rock slide or mudslide. southbound at summit, right now the delays are starting to ease. there's a crew on scene working to get that cleared up. hopefully that won't be a factor here throughout the next 15, 20 minutes. we will be here to let you know. 101 at 280, looking really good.

same for 101 at university through palo alto, and 880 through fremont stacking up in both directions, still an easy drive. we'll keep you updated, back to you. one of the top judges on the west coast is coming under fire this morning for his comments about an executions, capitol punishment, and whatnot. alex kaninski is on the court of appeals in san francisco. told the chronicle it's time to face up to how brutal executions are, bring back the firing squads. he claims lethal injection, when used properly, and it hasn't been lately, makes it seem as if it's a fast and easy procedure. he says in reality, they're brutal, savage events. the comments come after another questionable execution, the third this year, arizona's execution director says wednesday's execution was not botched in the inmate was never in pain, but it did take joseph wood nearly two hours to die and

he gaps and writhed the entire time. state attorney general harris says it's too soon to know if arizona's execution will have affect on california. she says it's too soon to tell if the state will appeal a federal judge's recalling which called the state eats death penalty here in california unconstitutional. harris says she's unsure if any executions will be done inhumanly. this was a change one, bizarre case in southern california, turned out to be nothing more than a kind gesture. investigators looked for the person who left these porcelain dolls outside the homes of little girls. out dolls resemble the girls of the home and didn't come with a note. late last night investigators found the person responsible, it was a woman who goes to church with most of the families. apparently she was just trying to be nice. bay area city is making one hit it list, probably not in a good way. the real estate blog movoto named palo alto the snobbiest

five men are in the hospital this morning after what appears to be a large fight in san jose. what police are telling us, coming up. critical drill taking place at san jose state. why you could see extra police officers on campus, next. and a rare occurrence, but here in the bay area today, san francisco will be warmer than los angeles. it's going to be a hot day here, hottest day of 2014 so far. we're waking up in the 50s and the 60s, some cities as high as 108 degrees today. your full forecast in just moments. >> as long as it's not hotter than arizona, but yeah, 10e 8 in the -- 108 in the bay area, a lot of people don't have

air-conditioning. enjoy your cool start to the morning, it's beautiful, friday, july 25th, this is "today in the bay". from northbound bay area, this is "today in the bay." very good morning to you, thanks for joining us, i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm scott mcgrew. let's check that microclimate forecast with meteorologist christina loren. each forecast is slightly difference in that it's slightly hotter. >> slightly hotter, and the further you get away from the bodies of water, the hotter it gets. you can count on some really hot conditions in the sacramento valley, but for us, 108 degrees in antioch, very hot, and we typically see this happen maybe one to two times per summer. hopefully this will be one and only time, but i can tell you, now that we've entered into the stretch of heat, it's going to stay hot for a while. sizzling weekend inland. beautiful beach conditions coming your way. temperatures this morning are mild. we're going to get that sun to

rise at about 6:05, we'll show you the low level fog wherever we can pick it up. as we get into this afternoon, it'll be gone. in fact we're expecting the low clouds to be finished, completely gone by about 9:00, maybe 10:00 a.m. today. you can see what happens when that is the case. 99 degrees, cut off the offshore flow in the south bay. 97 for the peninsula. 85 in san francisco, and 102 degrees in the north bay. hot spot, as per usual out in the tri-valley, they will get into the 105 to 106 degree range out in places like pleasanton and livermore. i like to put things in perspective for you. today in san francisco, 85 degrees the average is 66 degrees. today, los angeles, 84 degrees, it's going to be warmer here and yeah, new york city also getting some warm temperatures this time of year. now they have the humidity as well, but 83 degrees in new york city. so some of the biggest cities across the entire nation showing hot temperatures for today. we'll let you know how long this is going to last.

investigators in san jose trying to piece together what led to a big fight that sent five men to the hospital. broke out near darwin and bermuda ways around 11:00 last night. this is right next to overfelt high school. officers say three men were stabbed, two appeared to have been hit in the head by some kind of object, probably a bat. as of now, police say it's really unclear who are the victims and who are the suspects. >> we do know that two groups got in a large fight. there were several weapons involved. we don't know if both sides had weapons or if one side had weapons. both sides had injuries consistent with being struck or stabbed with weapons. >> all five men are expected to survive, but police say those who were hit in the head are undergoing tests to make sure there's no brain damage. san jose man who was stabbed and shot earlier this week has died. investigators who were called to loma verde drive found a victim, he died yesterday. officers have a suspect in custody. this is the city east 20th homicide this year.

5:34, developing in the middle east, piles of rocks and rubble, allest that left this morning after three 30 homes were struck overnight in gaza. one of the air strikes reportedly killed a hamas leaders and two sons. 15 other sites were reportedly including a hamas military command post. one rocket fired from gaza got past israel's missile defense system and struck and empty house. yesterday was a deadliest day in the conflict over the past 18 days with more than 100 palestinians killed. many were at a united nations run school that took several direct hits. it had become a shelter for civilians. israel's security cabinet is considering international ceasefire proposals today. one calls far five day humanitarian trust. first look at the wreckage this morning from the air algerie plane that crashed in northern mali. this is new video just in. it's not terrific, but this is coming from a long way away. this is from a french broadcaster, there's the debris

field. the president of france says his soldiers have recovered one of the black boxes overnight. fran swa also announced this morning all 116 people on the flight, many of whom were french are dead. he says even though bad weather appears to be the cause, authorities are not yet certain exactly what happened. the passenger plane was owned by swiftair and leased by algeria's flagship carriered. disappeared after an hour from taking off from burkina faso. today international investigators are making their way to ukraine to examine the wreck ak of malaysia airlines flight 17. bodies still being pulled from debris, more than a week after the plane was shot down near the russian border. all 298 people on board that plane killed as well. many of them dutch citizens. pro-russian separatists control the area, they've been hampering investigators attempts to access sites. police say the driver who ran down a man in san jose did

it on purpose. the victim was walking in the south part of the city when the suspect began chasing him in his car. the victim took off running, but the suspect followed him into a nearby shopping center and hit him with his car. it happen in the shopping center parking lot near roth and branden. the driver sped away and the victim taken to the hospital with nonlife threatening injuries. police say they have no idea why the driver went after the man. police officers armed with rifles and wearing bullet proof vests will storm san jose state university for a drill, an active shooter training drill today. the martin luther king jr. library will be closed until 1:30 this afternoon. people in the neighborhood should expect to see lots of officers, maybe even hear fake gunfire. state university system requires are its schools to have these drills every five years. this one was actually scheduled for the last week of may, but then it was postponed after a real life gunman opened fire near uc santa barbara killing six people, including three from the bay area. it's 5:37 right now, the sun

you're watching "today in the bay." welcome back everyone, it is 5:42, three central american presidentss are in washington today, pointing the finger at the u.s. for the recent influx of children crossing the border without their parents. congress is in gridlock over how to deal with it. tracy potts joins us live on capitol hill this morning, are lawmakers going to get anything done before the summer break? >> reporter: very unlikely. i mean they've got about another week before they go on a month long break. in fact it's a little longer than a month. republicans are meeting today, but within the party, they've got some differences over how to

deal with this big influx of kids and parents coming across the border, just in the last year. moderates to want beef up bodder security, conservatives want to leave it up to president obama and not give him anymore money to deal with this. meantime, the president does meet with the head, the leaders from effectively salvador, guatemala, and honduras, that's where most of these kids have come from. and they're going to be talking about how do you stem the flow of immigrants coming across the border? those leaders, here on capitol hill yesterday, telling lawmakers that instead of putting their money into border security, they should put it into the central american economy so people will have jobs, and there will be less drug trafficking and less violence and people will want to stay home instead of coming north to the united states. those meetings are happening today. we'll follow them for you here. >> sounds great, thank you very much, tracy. well it's that time of year again when the smell of garlic, cooking garlic as opposed to

just the garlic growing fills the bay area. >> you smell it in the south bay. all because of the annual garlic festival. it actually starts today. bob redell joins us live already down there in gilroy. what are the chefs cooking up this morning. >> reporter: can you say it with me? fire in the hole. there we go. all right. that's how you cook calamari out here at the gilroy garlic festival. they've been doing this for 46 years. they'll be doing this all day. today, tomorrow, and sunday. cooking five to 6,000 pounds of calamari, 3500 pounds of scampi, and pyro chefs like kevin, put a dash of garlic in there. looks like white wine, spices, and of course this is what everyone comes here for. they've got a ton of this stuff here. this is the garlic here from, man, you can smell it, smells good. the stuff from gilroy. and they'll be putting garlic on

the time that you really to want bulls eye for staying inside today is going to be between about noon and 5:00. and if you don't have an air conditioner, tonight will be balmy, but if you play your cards right, you can beat the heat. go ahead and shut the blinds in your home before you leave, also between the hours of 12:00 and 5:00. don't add heat to your home. it's good not to use those heat appliances like the drier and the dishwasher for example until after that sun drops off. and about 8:30 at night, that's when we're going to cool you off significantly, especially at the coast. 85 degrees in san francisco. temperatures are really comfortable for us. the first parking lot of the day -- part of the day, and san francisco this afternoon, 85 degrees. by lunchtime, that's about the time you really to want start to head indoors in junior inland hot spots. you can probably stay outside. heat's not too unbearable for today. still 85 in the city. this could be a new record. we'll have to let you know thu shapes up. let's switch gears now. after i serious incident to tell you about.

we told you about this earlier this morning, but reportedly at this the point, they have a canine unit headed out here. this is san mateo bridge headed westbound. crash blocking the middle lane. we're going to find out what's going on here and bring you the information. that's a bad spot for a crash. we will let you know. may be better off taking the dumbarton bridge, metering lights still off here. heavy volume through livermore, not too bad for a friday. and san mateo bridge, still light, but we are expecting this to change. stick with us, we'll get you to work on time, scott and laura. it is 5:48, investigators think a fourth person was involved in that deadly bank robbery and chase in stockton, and they're willing to pay for information leading to an arrest. the fbi, bank of the west, and crime stoppers are offering $50,000 for anyone who can help them catch the fourth person. last week, three men barged into the bank, took two tellers and a customer hostage, and got into a gun battle with police. two of the suspects and one hostage were killed. the third suspect was arrested.

investigators think the fourth person to drop them off at the bank that day. prospects filed new charges against state senator leland ye. in addition to the additional charges, ye is also charged with a reasonable care tiering -- racketeering. replacing the initial indictment with a new charge. ye and accused chinatown gangster raymond shrimp boy ciao are central figures. san francisco professor accused of taping students while going to the restroom is out on bail this morning. he is not working right now, but he recently taught accounting at the university. he was arrested on wednesday. student reportedly found a camera hidden in a tissue box in the bathroom. investigators say he invited students to his apartment in november. and that's something that's confusing to students. >> i don't know how i would react to that. that's really surprising.

it is 5:55, officers will be keeping a close eye on highway 101 once levi stadium opens, especially after three deadly crashes on the same stretch in less than a week. the most recent crash happened wednesday night. a speeding bmw flipped five times, killing a passenger and seriously injuring the driver. 24 hours before that, a motorcyclist was killed at the same spot trying to pass a big rig. and last friday, sunny valley woman died when a car she was in crashed. the area is between lawrence expressway in great american parkway right where the stadium is located. chp says there's nothing that appears to make it more dangerous than other parts of the freeway. they also point out, three crashes, the three crashes involved speeding and alcohol. well it's 5:56, local journalists has been detained in iran overnight. we'll tell you what we've learned coming up next. plus the new hip color according to one bay area water district. the push to save water coming up. and fire up those grills,
