meteorologist christina loren, how hot will we get? >> 108 degrees, scott and laura. that's antioch, but i can tell you, we haven't seen that so far this summer. the next couple days, although we will drop temperatures considerably tomorrow, especially at the coast, we are going to stay above average. and so, the dog days of summer, which we were able to bypass until now, have officially arrived here in the bay area. and we are waking up nice and mild. you know what, even though we're going to see the hottest temperatures inland, my main concern this morning is for people in san francisco who don't have air conditioners, same for those along the peninsula. you want to the make sure you are aware of the fact that it's going to be mild overnight. temperatures this morning in the 60s, tomorrow morning, we're expecting these numbers to be in the 70s. it's going to be a balmy night. we will shave like i said, five to ten degrees off your highs from today as we get into tomorrow. we're not going to be in the oe pressive heat for much longer. just one day. 99 degrees in the south bay. the peninsula's at 97 degrees,

east shore is 90 today. 85 for san francisco, hot spot out in the tri-valley, we'll see a high of 106 degrees in livermore. like i said before, 108 degrees is the forecasted high in antioch. here's the best thing we have to tell you about what when it comes to the beach, not only the best temperatures there, but also our ocean currents are still really warm. look at the water just offshore, monterrey, 65 degrees. we're going to hold on to that, maybe for one to two more days. winds are swifting and we'll -- shifting and we'll see the cooler ocean water return. traffic alert on the san mateo bridge, we'll be back with an update, back o you scott and laura. beating the extreme heat may be harder than you thought. >> nannette miranda is live in pleasanton with where a popular beach is shut down, good morning, nannette. >> reporter: good morning, one east bay regional park worker says in his 14 years on the job, he's never seen two beaches closed at the same time. here at shadow cliff in

pleasanton, the southern portion of the beach has been shut down due to e. coli concerns. the park district says drought conditions have pushed geese from the green lawns to the beaches where they've been going to the bathroom in low level waters. over at lake timscow in oakland, the problem is toxic algae in the water. now blue-green algae blooms are not new, but the high levels of toxins detected there last week are. >> usually have a blue-green algae bloom for a few days to a week, and this one's been going for three weeks. we don't know why this is happening. people can get stomach ailments from it, and they can get skin rashes from it. >> reporter: well you don't want that. with the weather so nice yesterday, the beach closures did ruin some plans to take a dip, but people took it in stride and just enjoyed the water from ashore. they agree the precautions are better than swimming in tainted

ceasefire proposals. one would call for a five day truce allowing both sides to negotiate new terms. the fighting has caused a number of european airlines to cancel flights into tel aviv. air berlin both cite ongoing security concerns. earlier this week, hamas missile landed just miles from the airport. the faa is currently allowing u.s. flights to fly into the airport. it is 6:05, another developing story, journal wis bay area ties is reportedly being held in iran. the washington post reports jason rizzon is one of four being detained. he has dual american and iranian citizenship. his wife was also taken into custody. two freelance forever photographers have been detai takened. it's not clear why they're being held. new morning, police officers looking for the person, or people, responsible for the beating and stabbing of numerous victims overnight. the fight broke out near darwin and bermuda ways around 11:00

last night. this is right next to overfelt high school. officers say three men were stabbed, two others appeared to be hit in the head by an object, maybe a bat. they're all expected to survive. nobody is in custody. not clear if the police know in fact who it is they're looking for. officers will be keeping, excuse me, close eye on highway 101 once levi stadium opens, especially after three deadly crashes on the same stretch inless than a week. the most recent crash happened wednesday night. a speeding bmw flipped five times killing a passenger and seriously injuring the driver. this hours before -- 24 hours before that, a motorcyclist was killed trying to pass a big rig. and last friday, a woman died when a car she was in crashed. the area is between lawrence expressway and great america parkway right where the stadium is located. chp says there's nothing that appears to make that area anymore dangerous than other parts of the freeway, and they also point out all three crashes involved speeding and alcohol. in the men time, we have the

situation on the san mateo bridge, we're going to bring in christina loren who's doing traffic for mike, what's the latest? >> well we just know it's police activity, but at this point, i can tell you delays have doubled. and we are getting that information, we have calls right now going out to california highway patrol, which you can actually see in the middle of the bring here, but what you'll really notice from the live picture is the fact that this is really, really slow. now these are your westbound lanes here. trying to get over to the peninsula this morning from the east shore, you'll be much better off if you take the dumbarton bridge, you'll notice here, we don't have heavy delays from this camera on the eastbound side, but as you can imagine, there are onlooker delays due to this police activity, and yeah, we have reports of a canine unit on scene. so something is happening over here. we're going get the details and bring them to you as soon as we have them confirmed. we like to get everything confirmed first. what else is can slow you down? tahoe this morning or sacramento, this could slow you down, this is eastbound 80 at

everywhere. the president of france says investigators will turn to one of the planes black boxes recovered at the site to pinpoint what happened. all 116 people on board were killed. police officers armed with rifles and wearing bullet proof vests will storm san jose state university for a drill, active shooter drill today because of this, the martin luther king jr. library will be closed until 1:30 this afternoon. and if you live in the neighborhood, do expect to see lots of officers, maybe even some fake gunfire. disgraced state senator leland ye faces new charges this morning in addition to bribery, money laundering. prosecutors are charging ye with racketeering as well. orange is the new black, but -- >> yeah when it comes to the drought, brown is the new green. that's the slogan santa clara valley water district is launching today. it's part of its new campaign. the goal is to encourage people to let their lawns go, a little brown this summer. the district says half of all

garlic calamari. 3500 pound of scamp ri. that's why they have the pyro chefs out here. there you can see they have of the sauce there. looks like its got garlic in there. here comes the actually garlic itself. i'm going to pull this bucket out here from underneath steve's feet. they have literally 2,000 pounds of this garlic here. everything here is garlic. and not only garlic scampi and calamari, you have garlic bread, garlic fries, garlic ice cream. have you had the garlic frog legs. >> i have. >> and? >> marvelous. anything with garlic is marvelous. you know that. >> reporter: garlic chicken, everything tastes like chicken. >> yeah. >> reporter: what about the kettle corn? >> oh yeah, absolutely. >> reporter: garlic water melon. >> have you seen it? >> i would imagine they probably soak it in garlic. >> reporter: how much sunscreen do you wear when you're out here on the gar may alley? >> quite a bit. we have a big tub back here someplace, and we lather up

>> and that is how the roof works, all right bob redell, live -- >> he couldn't hear me. but it is going to be a hot. >> reporter: i couldn't hear you. >> that's okay buddy. i'll text you in a minute. it is hard to hear, so you know, we're talking about the heat because it's going to be one of the hottest days of the year. christina's checking that forecast as we take a live look outside downtown san jose this morning. >> but bob did confirm that the roof is not on fire. right. the roof, roof, and what a roof it is. 6:17 now, and laura brings up a really vapid point, if you're one of the people head the out to the garlic festival, you might be dropping water all over yourself as you're out there. it's actually a good idea to go ahead and plan on the heat. and that is one of my techniques. i like to get my clothes nice and wet, then kind of just, you know, cool off, walk around a little bit, get that wind moving because always you want to do whatever it takes to keep cool. temperatures are going to be

warm out there. and really warm, not just a little bit. this is going to come on strong today. 64 degrees in livermore. another great tip is to try to park in the shade, and yes, definitely tonight. count on a balmy evening. if you have a fan, you want to pull it out of the closet, tonight's going to be hot. you can see that from the live picture of tiberon. golden gate bridge, you can make out the top tour here. i want to show you san francisco. taking a live look here, beautiful shot over hayes valley this morning as the sun comes up, cloudless sky and temperatures hot as a result. 102 degrees in the north bay. hottest day so far this year for the south bay. 99 degrees. we haven't hoit 100 in san jose just yet. that could be the case for today. 90 degrees on the east shore, 85 degrees in san francisco, and the big winner when it comes to the heat. 106 degrees out in tri-valley, meanwhile, 108 degrees for places like antioch. it's going to be toasty out there. tomorrow, we'll take five to ten degrees off of your highs from

police say the driver who ran down a man in san jose did it on purpose. the victim was walking in the south part of the city yesterday afternoon when the suspect began chasing him in his car. the victim took off running, but the suspect followed him into a nearby shopping center and hit him. it happened in the shopping center parking lot near roth and branden. the driver sped away. the victim eventually taken to the hospital with nonlife threatening injuries. police have no idea why the driver went after the man. one of the top judges on the west coast coming under fire this morning for controversial comments he made about the death penalty. he is the chief judge of the ninth u.s. circuit court of appeals in san francisco. recently told the chronicle it's time to face up exactly to how

brutal executions are and bring backfiring squads. he's claiming lethal injection makes it seem very fast and sure procedure like putting animals to sleep he said, but in fact, they are brutal, savage events he said. the comments come after another questionable execution, the third this year. arizona's execution director says wednesday's execution was not botched, and the inmate was never in pain. some witnesses don't think that's the case. it did take joseph wood nearly two hours to die. california attorney jury room harris says it's too soon to know if arizona's execution will have any effect on california. happening today, president obama is back in washington to meet with leaders of three central american countries to talk about the situation at the border. the presidents blame the u.s. for the influx of undocumented immigrants in texas. they say people are fleeing violence in their countries and american drug dealers are keeping central american cartels

moments. and a live look at the opening bell this morning. there's the bell on the nyse over ant nasdaq as well. >> chicken. >> today's july 25th, it's friday, this is "today in the bay". from nbc bay area, this is "today in the bay." a very good morning to you, thanks for joining us, i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm scott mcgrew. live look at the san mateo bridge, this is the hayward side where traffic has backed up slightly. there are police on the other side of the bridge with canine units looking for four men. they were involved in a hit and run crash on the bridge about an hour ago. police do think these men are hiding nearby or at a nearby hotel or maybe in the marina. police and canine are looking for the men involved in that. do avoid the area if you can. right now investigators are

trying to pinpoint exactly what caused an air al jeer plane to go down in mali killing all 116 people on board. it comes as we're getting our first look at the wreckage. "today in the bay's" tracy potts joins us live from washington, d.c. this morning, and tracy, weather appears to play a role, but it's too early to rule anything out. >> reporter: right, they haven't ruled out terror, they haven't ruled out some sort of missile from the ground, but they are leaning towards either a technical problem with the plane, or a weather problem. that's because the last they heard from the pilots, he wanted that plane rerouted because they had heavy rain. the wreckage has been found. identified both on the ground and in the air. in fact a french drone pinpointed that wreckage overnight. it was not far from the site, not far from the border of the country where it left earlier that day. and it turned out not to be, they think, a situation that was

involved in some of the discord that's been going on on the ground there. 116 people on board that plane. they don't believe there are any survivors, in fact in a briefing this morning, french president said no survivors, but they have found one of the black boxes, that's been sent off for analysis. today, the french military is on the ground, they've been in the region because there's been so much unrest there. they're helping with this investigation. they had about 100 soldiers brought in, 30 more vehicles being brought in today to secure the crash site to look for some of the wreckage and the evidence to preserve that evidence and of course, to try to recover some of the victims. laura. >> tragic, thank you very much, tracy, live from washington. meanwhile the remains of more victims from malaysian airlines flight 17 are on their way to the netherlands. bodies at the crash site continue to be found more than a week after the disaster that killed 298. this is the fourth plane to fly out of ukraine with remains, one

marina on the other side. we continue to monitor this situation. we'll keep you updated all morning. it is 6:39 right now, teenager in india is recovering after having more than 200 teeth pulled from his mouth. >> yeah, the 17-year-old apparently has a rare condition which a tumor grows under the gum, creates smaller tooth-like growths. it took a team of dental surgeons seven hours to remove the 232 dent calls last week. he'll be okay and doctors say this is a world record number of teeth removed from a person's mouth. >> i would say. okay, here's a gesture, people thought was creepy. >> yeah, but it turns out the person behind it was trying to be kind. here it is, someone left these little porcelain dolls outside the homes of little girls in orange county. and the dolls resemble the girls in the homes, but didn't come with any notes. late last night, investigators found the person responsible, it was actually a woman who goes to church with most of the families who was just trying to be nice.

forecasted high, 85 degrees in san francisco. and it's really hard to believe that we just had measurable precipitation roll through the bay area earlier this very week. sop we're starting out really mild, temperatures mostly in the 60s. and we want you to be very well aware that this heat really isn't going anywhere any time soon. we're going to be above average all weekend lock, into next week as well. i want to show you a live look, beautiful start, good morning in tiburon. overall, nice and clear, low cloud cover earlier this morning. that is starting to fade fast. as a result, we're going to hit about 102 degrees in the north bay for today. hot conditions out there. 85 degrees in san francisco, 90 degrees on the east shore for today. 97 on the peninsula, and a hot day coming your way, san jose, 99 degrees for us. so all things in perspective, right? doctors are -- dodgers are playing the giants who are back in town. that game tonight on northbound bay area, it's going to be hotter here than it will be in los angeles today.

shadow cliffs in pleasanton, for now it's closed because of the e co. sly concerns, you can blame the drought on this one. the park district says the dry conditions have pushed geese from the once green lawns to the beaches where they've been going to the bathroom into low level waters. beach goers say the precautions are better than swimming in the possibly tainted water. over in oakland, the lake's problem is potentially dangerous toxic algae in the water. blue-green algae blooms are not new, but the high levels of toxins were detected here last week. >> been with the department for 14 years and we've never closed two beaches at the same time. >> we brought sandwiches and drinks and we're going to have a picnic. and look at the water. >> reporter: now swimming in that algae can cause stomach aches and skin rashes and who wants that? the beach goers yesterday were happy to enjoy the water from ashore. whiem that's a burm when the

hanks christina.now, scott and new morning, police officers are looking for the person or people responsible for beating up and stabbing numerous people overnight. it happened last night near darwin and bermuda way. police got there just before 11:00 and found five people either stabbed or beaten. all the men were taken to the hospitals. investigators say one of them might die. no one is in custody, and it's not clear if police even know who they're looking for. happening today, police officers armed with rifles and wearing bullet proof vests will storm san jose state university for an active shooter training drill. the martin luther king jr. library will be closed until 1:30 this afternoon. and people in the neighborhood should expect to see a lot of officers, maybe hear some fake gunfire. the state university system requires that schools to have drills every five years. this one was originally scheduled for last week of may, but it was postponed after a gunman opened fire near uc santa

barbara, killing six people, including three from the bay area. san diego high school teacher has filed a complaint against a san jose police department claiming he was the victim of abuse. this is newly obtained video of the scuffle which happened back in may. the teacher, nathaniel howard was visiting the bay area when it happened. he was questioning the way police were treating his friend when they threw him to the ground and struck him with a baton. he told us he was in town to give a commencement speech at san jose state. department officials did not comment other than to say they're looking into it. prosecutors filed new charges against state senator leland ye. in addition to the charges, ye is being charged with a racketeering, federal prfrts filed a superassading indictment replacing the original indictment with a new charge. ye and accused chinatown gangster raymond shrimp boy chow are central figures in the case.

san francisco work lers start on an art project with a purpose. on market street between fifth and 12th streets. crews will begin painting red lanes on the road, designed to designate between transit-only lanes and lanes that are opened to all drivers. now, they're going to get a new paint job to make it clear. some red lanes exist elsewhere in the city. construction on governor brown's $68 billion high speed rail project going on as planned, at least for now. according to the mercury news, state appeal's court upheld the proposed route, the railline would take that would connect the bay area to the central valley. several bay area cities argued that route through the pass would hurt the environment. the state argued it was exempt from california environmental protection because the project is being overseen by the federal government. the court decided the project could get through the pass, but it still has to follow state rules. if it does happen, i hope it happens in our lifetime.
