from nbc bay area, this is "today in the bay." well good morning everyone, 4:30, it's monday once again, i'm scott mcgrew. >> and i'm kris sanchez. laura garcia-cannon is off. lots to get to this morning, first let's check your forecast with meteorologist christina loren, good morning, christina. >> good morning kris and scott. happy monday everybody. we have a really interesting forecast. i know it was hot all weekend long. and it is going to be hot again today, but, in addition to that heat, close to the triple digits once again, we're also going to incorporate some showers this morning. we have a lot to go over, first let's check your drive, here's mike inouye.

>> good morning. before 2:00 in the morning, we've had this going on. on the side of the road, on its side is a big rig truck carrying # 0,000 pounds of bananas. and that's a problem. i don't know about the driver. we haven't heard about any major injuries. two lanes are blocked. westbound commute direction for many of the viewers this is not a problem. we'll show you where this is on the map. you're jamming up as you approach greenville, by the time you get to vasco road, everything is clear. bad news, they won't clear until 7:00 or 8:00 a.m. that is going to be a problem getting there. most people don't car pool however. we're looking at livermore which mare bear benefit from that and keep the dublin interchange lighter later in the commute. 7:00 or 8:00 until the two lanes are expected to be cleared around greenville. the rest of the bay normal. after i crash in the north bay to tell you about. coming up, back to you.

>> thank you, mike. tense hour in san jose as crews work quickly to put out a fire near a propane depot. on the other said of the interstate from san jose state. cruels had to shut down the interstate in both directions for about 20 minutes and evacuate the neighborhood for a while. investigators say fire started outside the propane facility in some trees, and quickly made its way towards dozens of tanks. >> we could smell the property pain and hear the propane coming out of the tanks. what we had is a high concern that is if all they caught fire or exploded, it'd be a large explosion or a bomb in the heart of the city. >> crews managed to symptom the flames before some exploded. some were burned though. investigators still trying to figure out how it all happened. we are expecting a major announcement this morning, and it has to do with pge and the deadly gas line explosion four years ago.

"today in the bay's" bob redell joins us live. this announcement comes as new public relations efforts come forth. >> reporter: good morning to you, kris, yes, later this morning, around 9:00, the mate your of san bruno and colleagues will stand on the steps of the public utility commission in san francisco to announce what actions the city will take after it obtained documents showing what they say is illegal conduct between the cpuc and pge. they're in the process of determining how to penalize the utility for the gas pipeline explosion that killed eight people and destroyed san brew knee neighborhood nearly four years ago. that raises the question of how can the puc be impartial when it comes to calculating the penalty in that explosion. for example, among the 7,000 documents the city obtained is an e-mail from michael peevy,

this is an e-mail he sent to pge giving them pr advice on how to handle the federal indictment against the utility. >> what that showed me is that three and a half years after the explosion and fire in san bruno, the relationship between pge and the puc which should be at arm's length is as close as possible and close as it has always been. >> reporter: that was state senator jerry hill who represents san bruno who plans to join the city. now pge released a statement quoting here, we're committed to conducting ourselves in an ethical manner at all times. we will review all of the e-m l e-mails involved to ensure this high strnld was upheld. yesterday nbc bay area news reached out to the cpuc. it said it complied with information requests, but did not weigh in on other accusations. again that news conference being held by the city of san bruno at the steps of the cpuc later this

morning. taking place at 9:00. reporting live here in san bruno, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> we'll be watching, thanks bob. east bay state senator into construction problems on the new bridge. mark says yet to be released senate investigative report says caltrans accepted substandard work. he wants outside experts to examine the foundation for defects. some issues have been publicized in prior reports. a state senate hearing is scheduled for next month. developing now in the middle east, u.n. security council just wrapped up an emergency meeting where it urged israel and hamas to reach a cease-fire that will hold. this weekend, both sides agreed to two separate cease-fires ahead of a major muslim holiday. although the official temporary truces were broken. it was a relatively quiet night, but early this morning, israeli

jets again pounded three hamas sites in gaza after a rocket was launched at israel. the strikes followed an almost 12-hour pause in the fighting which is now in its 20th day. so far, more than 1,000 palestinians and more than 40 israeli soldiers have been killed. this morning, hundreds of people in northern california waiting to find out if their homes made it through the night. crews making progress against the sand fire. this is burning near sacramento, more than 500 homes are still threatened this morning. the fire started friday, it's already burned almost 4,000 acres. ten homes have been destroyed along with seven sheds and shacks. right now crews have about half the fire surrounded. 30 firefighters from the bay area are on the front lines of that sand fire including many of the south bay. working with eight engines and a bulldozer. equipment usually designed to protect other counties, but the division chief for cal fire south bay operations says, we are still protected. >> we still have adequate

firefighting resources to mitigate any threats that might come. if needed, we can call for mutual aid outside the media. >> they had to call for backup in san jose. the threatened -- that threatened six homes. they asked for help from surrounding units. they also managed to put that fire out before it spread. today prosecutors will try to convince a judge that there is enough evidence to try a man accused of pretending to be a police officer in order to sexually assault undocumented immigrants. san francisco police say jeffrey buga dressed up like a cop and lured central americans to his home. once there, he allegedly made them perform sexual acts, threatening them with deportation if they reported anything. he pleaded not guilty to the charges earlier this month. his preliminary hearing is set to begin today. his bail has been set at $2

million. former state senator leland ye's political consultant is presenting a statement today. jackson is named in the federal corruption and organized crime indictment. he is accused of funnelly campaign contradictions to ye -- contributions to ye. several hurt, one killed in alight storm. 20-year-old man died after he was struck by a lightning bolt at venice beach. several other people in or near the water were hurt. they touched down in the middle of the afternoon. it's a crowded beach. witnesses say the screw grew dark without warning. >> the loudest clap of thunder i've ever heard in my life because it was so close. i thought it was like a bomb almost. >> all the sudden you heard this crack, this giant bolt up in the

sky, i'm from the midwest, we see lots of lightning. >> 13 other people were injured. one critically. about the same time as venice beach was being hit, a 57-year-old man was hit on catalina island. >> lived down there for a couple years, never saw lightning at the beach. >> meanwhile i'm from the midwest and i would run like heck if i saw lightning near water. >> bizarre story. christina loren joins us now with the forecast, but isn't that unusual? >> actually, this time of year, i'm from southern california, i've went through this every single summer while i was growing up. but that monsoonal moisture playing a factor. here's the deal for us today, guys. it's coming our way. we have a chance of thunderstorms and showers right here in the bay area in addition to the heat that we're really not going to get rid of for today. we're starting out in the mid-60s. 61 degrees in san francisco. high pressure firmly in control. this is what's really initiating that heat. as we continue through the day

today, even though temperatures look mild. 81 degrees, not bad in the east shore. you're going to have to factor in the humidity. it's going to feel about five to ten degrees warmer than the true temperature out there, and that humid city going to -- humidity is going to increase throughout the day. who has the best chance for seeing showers today and who might measure when it comes to the precipitation. righ now though, let's welcome mike inouye. thank you for holding down the fort, always getting the traffic out when i'm occupied. looking out over here, this will occupy morning reports. the slow down, not in livermore, it's coming into the livermore and the eastern edge of the city. westbound 580. two lanes blocked. your commute direction, so you're jammed out of the pass approaching greenville. before greenville, overturned big rig on its shoulder and blocking two lanes for the debr debris. they have to clear that and right at 7:00 a.m. is what they're looking at there. crash where we're talking about in the north bay.

look at the scene that we're watching in livermore. two westbound lanes of 580 are closed because of this big rig that is overturned. no word on the condition of the driver, but we do know that that load was full of bananas. so there is a cleanup under way and again, two lanes of westbound 580 closed. two huge comic book conventions are clashing over the right to the famous name comic-con. the lawyer for san diego comic-con issued a cease and desist letter to organizers of utah's salt lake city, salt lake comic-con demanding they stop using the name. attendees will incorrectly assume that it is affiliated with the one in san diego. this demand is baseless and forgive louse says a -- frivolous says a lawyer. $9.2 billion sale to albertsons.

at the headquarters in pleasanton. it's not a done deal yet, the federal trade commission will have to prove it. because of the deal, they are moving from pleasanton to idaho where albertson's is headquartered. the safeway 150 safeway stores will shrink and focus on more locally sourced and custom branded foods. let's go to jackie deangelis, live at cnbc world headquarters this morning, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, scott. while we are watching stocks closely it morning, of course we watched what happened last week, stocks closing lower on friday to give us an indication of where we go from here. that's how 123 points closing under 17,000, and small cap 2,000 index closing down for a third straight week as well. dig bay for -- big day for earnings today. watch for the reports. meanti meantime, jack lou publishing an

op-ed urging congress to close inversion. they are when a company moving its tax home overseas and its becoming quite popular lately, especially in the last few months, it's a way for company to lower tax rate. we need to reform the business tax code to make the u.s. economy more competitive and says that he hopes that congress will pass anti-inversion legislation as soon as possible, back to you. >> all right, thank you much. and now let's get back to our weather and traffic. we'll start with christina loren, good morning. >> good morning. you two made it through the hottest weekend of summer so far. it was bad. >> i'm wining. >> what do you do with the kids when it gets too hot? >> the hose, but not too much. >> i like that, very, very good. cautious optimism there. why can't i ever say san francisco that the hour? san francisco, i've called it everything. 60 in concord. 6 # in san jose and 59 in san

martin. so for today, here's the deal, not quite as hot, but more humidity. so you're probably not going to notice the difference. it's going to be a scorcher out there for today. and we're actually picking up measurable precipitation just to the south this morning. mostly moving up towards the area. you can see the batch of rain, it is charging along here and it's going to go to the north baby around 2:00 p.m. you can see it's going to travel about 200 miles or so over the course of the next few hours getting our first showers here in the bay area. not expecting much, but enough to wear, you'll notice that stickiness in the atmosphere. and the temperatures are going to feel about five to ten degrees warmer than the true temperature when you add that additional moisture as a weight to it. 70 degrees in san francisco. 48 on the peninsula, and 89 degrees on the south bay. feeling more like 99 degrees when you factor in the humidity. it's going to be hot even though the temperatures don't reflect

that humidity. as we get to the end of the week, we'll see significant changes. i wanted to show you this, as the winds shift back to the southeast, up comes that warm current. the temperatures in the ocean are still in the mid-60s. if you didn't get a chance to get throughout over the weekend and enjoy this unusual water trend, well you still have an opportunity to do so for today. as we get to the end of the week, wind will shift again and we will have that cold water returning to the pacific just offshore by about wednesday. that's what we're expecting. when that happens, also we're going to lose that humidity. it'll feel a lot more comfortable, back to about average. just above average for thursday into friday. overall, holding on to the 70s all week long in san francisco. so getting a little bit of a treat there at least for now, back to you, scott and kris. >> thank you, christina. new this morning, six students who survived south korea's ferry disaster says the ship's crew never tried to help them. students are urging the court to punish the ship's crew which escaped first and abandoned the passengers as the ferry was

sinking. the captain and ship operators did not appear. they face charges ranging from homicide to negligence and abandoning ship. more students are expected to testify tomorrow. and take a look at this, a luxury train carrying tourists tipped over in thailand. two people were hurt. nearly # 0 passenger -- 80 passengers were on their way from singapore and bangkok. australian officials say it's too dangerous to enter. it forced a team of dutch and australian police officers to postpone a trip to the crash site. officers were going to collect evidence and recover remains yesterday, but ukrainian armed forces launched a major onslaught against pro-russian separatists in the area in an effort to gain control of the crash site. today, governor brun will -- brown will meet with religious and rip lomatic leaders to talk

about immigration reform. this picture was taken shortly after the governor arrived in mexico city yesterday. he originally was headed to mexico to work on business opportunities and to talk about climate change. later today, he will host a delegation of some of california's top businesses and political leaders. his economic trade mission may lead to changes in the way california and mexico do business. last year there were more than $60 billion in goods and services coming back and forth across the border. 4:51, replacing the handshake, something doctors say is a more high againic -- hygienic way to greet people. they found out our handshake. the golden gate bridge has been prepared for the morning commute. the cones have moved. scott, we'll talk about our handshake later on, coming up.

you're watching "today in the bay." welcome back. giants, i do try to love you, i really do try. struggling the first day in the playoff race. dodgers completed the sweep last night with a 4-3 win. the giants lost four in a row and are now a game and a half back in the nl west division race. g-men hope to turn things around tonight against the pirates. game time, 7:00, watch the action here on nbc bay area. and after the game, they have the running wild with bear grills as well. you've seen all the tv commercials for it. should be pretty cool.

>> sounds good. and in just a few hours, president obama will pay tribute to a popular bay area singer. linda ronstat will receive the national medals of arts. san francisco native already has 11 grammy's and a tony award and was inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame earlier this year. locally though, she's known for her contributions to her community including a number of years as the musical director of the san jose heritage festival. greeting people with a handshake may not be safe. doctors suggesting a better solution. >> yes, new research says the fist bump may be more hygienic than when you greet your doctor. researchers found the handshake transmits ten times a. bacteria. experts say hands off approach
