from nbc bay area, this is "today in the bay." well good morning everyone, 4:30 in the morning, i'm scott mcgrew. >> and i'm kris sanchez in for laura garcia-cannon. breaking news to start this morning, heavy police presence in the downtown area of san jose. >> "today in the bay's" derek shore just got to the scene near plaza decesar chavez, tell us the latest here. >> reporter: over the last couple minutes, this has turned fatal. someone died. it was originally a stabbing. i'm going to steb out of the way. we can take a look at this very big scene. we're on park avenue where south mission intersects.

you can see police have the entire intersection shut down in between is plaza decesar chavez, and we believe that is where an altercation took place and one man was stabbed to death. scanner reports show that that man may have been stabbed in his neck and back. as you can see, south market is shut down at park avenue which will affect people getting in and out of the downtown dor competitor here -- corridor here. again, reports are that one man has been stabbed to death. he was reported to have been taken to a local hospital and was pronounced dead there. as for a suspect being in custody. that is still yet to be known. we are waiting for an update for san jose police. one man stabbed and traffic affected here on south park avenue and south mission. latest here from downtown san jose, derek shore, "today in the bay." >> derek, you'll be out there all morning to check out the latest. and now let's look at your

forecast in case you're headed out the door, christina loren joins us. >> hey good morning, another bizarre weather day for the bay area, but you know kwha, temperatures were bearable yesterday. today we'll get more of the same. still dealing with showers on the radar. not a lot to show you, basically wherever you're headed this morning, five to ten minutes at the same time of windshield wipers. we expect more to get in as we progress throughout the morning. we will be tracking the showers. nonetheless, temperatures looking good for today. we'll dive into the forecast and tell you about heat coming in later this week. first your drive, here's mike inouye. good morning, we're looking at this shot of 101, watching the headlights off in the distance, let's look at this the. we had reports of a crash. car reportedly hit a deer that's just past where we can see with our camera. i don't see flashing lights or slowing on the sensors. we're watching for any related police activity on the shoulder. again, that's there.

derek shore just reported from downtown san jose as well, right now south market is closed between san fernando, that takes you past park. there's a bank of america there, there's a tech museum, local landmarks. traffic control there. opposite side of the park from the fairmont. you're passing westbound around highway 24, it has eased up, overnight construction crews may be on the move there and the rest of the bay looking smooth. we'll talk about oakland coming up, back to you. new this morning, vta investigating a possible deadly crash involving one of its trains and a pedestrian. it happened just before 1:00 this morning at 85 and coddle. bus bridge was put up to take people around the accident. everything's expected to be running normally by the commute. the pedestrian taken to the hospital, not clear if he or for that matter she will survive or what exactly happened. also new this morning, two people were rushed to the hospital overnight after a van

being chased by police hopped the cur, and hit them. it happened overnight at post and jones street in the tenderloin district. that's where stephanie chuang is in san francisco this morning where the two people were taken, you're outside san francisco general where the two folks were taken. how are they doing this morning, steph? >> reporter: good morning to you, kris. not sure. we do know that at least one of the six people injured was injured very badly, in fact, that this person suffered life threatening injuries. as you mention is here at sf general. that person being one of two pedestrians hit last night. it was at post and jones as you mentioned. at 10:15. again monday night. that's when san francisco police had actually tried to pull over that van for a traffic infraction violation. that was at post and larkin. a couple of blocks away, but apparently the driver took off. now sfpd says there was no police pursuit in this, but it

was two blocks later when the suspect ran a red light and collided with the taxi. that impact sent both vehicles up on to the sidewalk and into two people who were standing there. at least one of them again badly hurt, suffering life threatening injuries. the taxi driver did have a passenger. the two of them did get hurt, but nonlife threatening injuries. we also know that the driver of the suspect's vehicle. that van tried to run boarding a 38 geary box, but police did catch him and they took him into custody. we also understand there was one other person with the suspect, not sure if police were able to get that person right away or if they tried to flee. but the other thing we do know this morning is that the van was stolen. we are expecting police to give an update later this morning. now live at sf general, stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much. san jose police spent the night collected evidence at the scene of a deadly shooting, investigators hope it'll help them find the person who opened

fire around several children. this happened yesterday afternoon on grammar c place on 680 and san francisco bay. several children were playing in the street. man who was walking along the road was killed at the scene, but it's not clear if he was the target. investigators aren't sure if the suspect was walking as well, but they did find a gun at the scene. police say the area is known for gang activity. police say graffiti in the neighborhood marks the street as gang territory. >> every other night there's some kind of fighting, shooting, drinking, fireworks. getting really tired of it. and nobody seems to do anything about it. >> that was san jose's 21st homicide of the year. and just the 22nd with a few minutes ago with the stabbing. the identity of the victim not released. police have not given us any information about a suspect either. developing now in the mideast, gaza's only power plant

was shut down overnight after it was hit from shells from an israeli tank. palestinians are now dealing with power outages. it is the middle of the afternoon now, but last night we saw the heaviest bombardment of rockets since the conflict began this month. that was video of rockets hitting a building that houses hamas's tv and radio network. israeli war planes pounded other areas of the strip with bombs and flairs all night, turning the dark sky orange. before the sun came up, 32 palestinians were killed bringing the total number of dead on both sides to nearly 1200. representatives for federal express will be in a federal courtroom today to answer to charges that the overnight delivery company was involved in a prescription drug conspiracy. the company is charged with a knowingly delivering medical drugs and pain killers to people without prescription. authorities say fedex worked on behalf of illegal internet farm sis.

now in a statement, a fedex spokesman said the company is innocent and plans to plead not guilty. the former san francisco state professor accused of secretly taping students while going to the bathroom is scheduled to make his fers appearance in court today. mark landis is currently unemployed but taught accounting at the university. he was arrested last week after a student reportedly found a camera hidden in a tissue box in the bathroom at his apartment. he faces 156 misdemeanor counts of invasion of privacy. strike teams are outside yosemite ready to fight of flames to fight off a fire that's out of control since saturday. it has burning 2600 acres. at least one home has been burned and other buildings are in the fire's path. two campgrounds evacuated, fire burning on the western edge of yosemite. only 5% contained this morning. it is 4:38 now, time to

check our forecast, and wondering if the firefighters are going to get relief. >> probably not today kris and scott. good morning to you. we have this monsoonal moisture around. we're going to look at that. let's focus in on what's happening right here right now, and that's showers that could impact your morning drive around the bay area. now these are coming from the south. moving to the north and really impacting the south bay. i can also go in so tight on the showers. i can show you exactly where they are. we have that technology here at northbound bay area. you can see right now, right over 101 where it comes together with 85 in the south bay, that's where you're using your wipers. also up in the north bay, along 101 from petaluma to santa rosa. watch out. little wet weather headed your way. that'll be the case, but basically all morning long we're going to see the renegade shours as i call them because they're hard to pinpoint and i can tell you they're very fast moving. although it's nice to get rain-cooled air. 55, patchy fog in the north bay

right now. 64 on the peninsula. temperatures today are going to be warm yet again. we're still talking about the mid to upper 80s. no 90s in the forecast for today. i'm still going about 89 degrees in the tri-valley. not too bad, but it's going to feel warmer than the true temperature because we'll keep that humidity going. i'll let you know who we lose that humidity and we have changes to tell you about towards the end of the week. first let's check your drive and say good morning to mike inouye. good morning, we have a situation, i is that true crash as we take it to fum screen. you're looking at just off in the distance, flashing lights, van hit another vehicle that was over at toll plaza and the way chp reports is that someone's pinned between the vehicles. this is a big concern right now. the bridge crews should help out soon. we don't want any further crashes, we're going to track this carefully. right now the light volume there is okay. concern for the person reportedly pinned there. oakland, i told you to look at that the 880 past the area. that's showing a good volume of traffic. this is an early start, tuesday

he was reported missing sunday when he got separated from his hiking group. he spent the night with rescue crews. he'll be air lifted out this morning. we doo not yet have word on his condition. san francisco's supervisor wants to help retail employees get better work schedules. eric marble introducing the retail worker's bill of rights. it is designed to protect workers, particularly part-time employees who often have inconsistent schedules and reduced hours. he partnered with groups to introduce that bill. toyota urged to recall one of its best selling cars. jacky deangelis with the details, good morning, jackie. >> reporter: good morning, scott. well consumer reports its urging toyota to recall older model camry hybrid because the power brakes could fail. the decision to only repair cars brought in by owners doesn't go far enough since it has acknowledged defects in a crucial safety system. the problem affects the 2007 to

2011 camry. meantime futures lower this morning after stocks ended mixed on monday as investors considered economic data, earnings reports, and the federal reserve meeting which starts today. the fed of course may discuss the timing of future interest rate hikes and that is of concern to investors. look for it today on consumer confidence that could move the markets. and the dow rose 22 points yesterday to close at 16,982. snapping a three-day losing streak. nasdaq going to 4444. t mobile dropping the price on family plan at the latest shot at at&t. under the limited time offer. family of four can get unlimited talk, text, and up to ten gigabytes of data for under $100 aen month. it isn't shared among family memberings. there's no early upgrade options something that they do offer. there's always a catch, a back to you. >> there is a catch, no free

lunch. thank you much. we've heard the warnings about tank beds and skin cancer. this morning a new voice is joining the conversation. u.s. surgeon general released a report saying too much exposure to indoor and outdoor uv light is a major cause of skin cancer. the report also mentioned that uv radiation is completely avoidable. several states have banned indoor tanning by minors, including california, and earlier this year, the fda announced it would require labels on tanning beds, warning against the use by anyone younger than the age of 18. well let's talk about your outdoor uv and kristina loren -- christina loren this morning. >> brought to you by common sense. good morning to you. we have a good looking day shaping up. shower activity out there right now, but this is actually going to help to keep our atmosphere on the cool side. overall, temperatures today ramping up to the upper 80s and the showers will stick with us for the first part of the day,

but as of of this afternoon into tonight, we'll see stronger onshore flow. the cool ocean air welcome back across the board. even to the extreme east bay. right now shower activity to the south bay. also up in the north bay, petaluma, use your wipers this morning and all of thez tracking towards santa rosa. get ready for that over the course of the next 15, 20 minutes. overall, not a lot of shower activity. not enough to watch your car for today. temperatures are going to be really mild. we're in the 60s headed towards the upper 80s. peninsula's in 83 degrees and 68 degrees for today in san francisco. so here we go. your temperatures aren't going to fluctuate all that much as we head throughout the next couple days. what will happen is we're going to get rid of all that midlevel moisture. it's going to feel a lot better, but that above average heat's going to persist potentially new mexico the 10th of august. now that we're into it, the dog days of summer, we're holding on. overall though, no extremes, no triple digits here in the south bay. just the upper 80s to low 90s

all the way across the board. you're going to get the 70s in san francisco still getting those warm ocean currents. we'll show you where that's changing though in my next report. right now back to you scott and kris. cdc this morning warning about the deadly e bow la -- ebola virus. two american health workers have been diagnosed. its killed 650 people in liberia since february. it can take nearly three weeks for symptoms to appear and health officials in the u.s. say they're doing everything they can to keep that disease from crossing the atlantic. >> outbreak highlights the need for us to enhance our efforts around global health security every we in the world. >> the state department is not restricting travel, but the cdc does warn people to avoid contact with those who have been hite house says the u.s. and the european union will place new sanctions against

russia. the u.s. has accused russia of ramping up its troop presence along the board we are ukraine and sending heavy weapons to pro-russian separatists. u.s. says separatists in eastern ukraine are responsible for shooting down that malaysia airlines plane earlier this month. it'll target the financial, energy, and military sector. john kerry meets with ukraine's foreign minister today. that meeting with pablo quintkon is scheduled this morning. they are expected to discuss the downing of the malaysian airlines flight as well as the ongoing conflict in ukraine. secretary kerry on sunday called for an immediate cease-fire in the conflict zone as well as negotiations amongst all sides. tsa turning to crowd sources in hopes of making security check points more appealing. they said come up with a way to meet all requirements while improving the experience for passengers. not all fun and games.

you're watching "today in the bay." welcome back. now looking live at o.co coliseum at 4:55, the alameda county board of supervisors will vote this morning on that new lease to keep the a's at o.co. the board is expected to approve the deal which has been approved by the oakland coliseum authority and the city council. well from the big to the little. little leagues from several countries will be buzzing around the bay area today. >> hundreds of players, umpires, and baseball fans filled the streets of livermore yesterday for the start of the little league world series intermediate decision. 11 championship teams from around the world a taking part of the tournament including one from san ramone. last year the series brought in close to 40,000 people.
