camera. and good morning to you, i'm meteorologist christina loren, tracking showers on the radar. you know what, our radar is so awesome. we can pinpoint things right to the street level. we're doing that for you this morning, also, chance for thunderstorms today. a little heat in the forecast. those numbers coming up in just moments. and a bay bridge toll plaza, three vehicles, one pinned between two of them. we're waiting for paramedics to arrive and huge impact on the approach to the bay bridge. we'll show you that progress coming up. and at 5:00, we look live outside, downtown san jose. it is a nice start to this tuesday, july 29th, this is "today in the bay." from nbc bay area, this is "today in the bay." good morning, and thanks for joining us, i'm kris sanchez in for laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm scott mcgrew. we have breaking news, we begin with that. police have closed off a part of downtown san jose as they investigate a deadly stabbing.

crime scene tape can be seen near south market and park. that's near plaza de cesar chavez. dark shore is -- derek shore is there, what do you know? >> reporter: this is the 22nd homicide in san jose so far this year after a man died. i'm going to step out of the way and you can see the large police presence here at south mission and park avenue here in downtown san jose. according to police, this all started with a 911 call, just about 2:15 a.m., reporting that five to six people were attacking someone near plaza de cesar chavez. by the time police arrived, they would find a man stabbed. he would later die. we do not know if the suspects at this point are in custody. homicide detectives are responding to the scene and will, of course, be giving us updates as we get them. south market avenue is blocked off at this hour. southbound, at least, is blocked off. it'll be affecting traffic as we come back out here live, again,

all we know at this point is a man was stabbed, scanner reports show that he may have been stabbed in his back and his neck, and he died later at a hospital. five to six suspects reported, but if any of them are in custody, that's unclear. that's the latest, i'm derek shore, "today in the bay." >> all right derek, thank you. new this morning, six people were hurt, one gravely as a car running from police in san francisco ended with a crash. it happened overnight at post and jones streets in the city's tenderloin district. "today in the bay's" stephanie chuang is nearby at san francisco general where two of the victims were taken, and you say one of them again hurt very seriously. >> reporter: that's right, good morning to you, kris. six people were hurt and all taken here to sf general. one of the pedestrians was fighting for his or her life. as you look at the scene. you can see there's a lot of police tape and debris all over

the sidewalk there. san francisco police say this all began around almost 10:20 last night when they tried to pull over a van for a traffic infraction violation. that was at post and larkin. but the driver took off. now afpd says there was no police pursuit involved, no police chase, but second later, a couple blocks away, the suspect did run a red light. and that was when the suspect collided with a taxi. that crash sending both vehicles up on to the sidewalk at post and jones. hitting a person who was walking there as well as a person on a bicycle. both of them were hurt. again, one of them, at least one of them very seriously. the taxi driver and a passenger were injured, but with nonlife-threatening injuries. the driver tried to run boarding a 38 geary bus, but police caught him and took him into custody as well as a second person. both of them were also taken here to sf general just in case. we don't know who they were, where they're from, but we do

know that the van they were in was stolen. for now live in san francisco, stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." >> thank you, stephanie. prosecutors have filed voluntary manslaughter charges against a northern california man suspected of starting a fire that killed one person. the man's name is freddie smoke. he's already been charged with a marijuana cultivation and accident tally starting a fire in connection with this month's 4,000 acre fire in shasta county. investigators say smoke started the fire while delivering supplies to an illegal marijuana grow, but he posted bail before crews found out the remains of a man who believed to have died in the fire. so that's why they expanded the charges. san bruno city leaders want the head of the california public utility's commission fired because of what they call an inappropriate relationship with pge. the city wants michael peevy to remove himself from any decisions or discussioning involving are the 2010 pipeline explosion. it is asking governor jerry brown to remove peevy from the

commission and they're also asking for a new fine against pge for inappropriate communications. in one private e-mail sent to the puc, a pge signs off with love you, thanks. with pge and peevy's office say they are taking the matter seriously. police in alameda asking for your help to get help from a prowler. this is from tape from a home. the man wandering there. he asked the homeowner if he worked on vehicles. the prowler left the property. if you do recognize this man, police would like you to give them a call. meteorologist christina loren joins us with a look at the forecast. and we see lots of color there behind you. >> yeah, limit pop of -- little pop of color on a tuesday morning. 61 degrees in oakland. 63 in san jose, and 61 to kick off the day in kahn cord. temperatures overnight, bearable. you'll probably be able to get

to sleep by opening up the windows. tonight, same deal, not too hot which is really good news for those of you waking up with us in san francisco. a lot of you do not have air conditioners, and so we have good news for you. they are going to rebound back to our averages. i want to show you though it's not very average. showers on the radar yet again at this point, i feel like i tracked showers more in the summer time than all winter long. this is right now. up in the north bay, you're going to find a pretty good batch of rain here. centralized right over petaluma, all of this is pushing over toward napa. and i'm tracking this by the minute for you this morning. we're expecting this activity to make its way into sonoma by 5:18, great news for grape growers out there. here's what we're working with today. tear fair game for a -- fair game for a shower or two. we're headed towards the 80s. although it's going to feel warmer than the true temperature yet again today. 82 on the east shore.

83 degrees along the peninsula and 88 here in the south bay. the big story is, humidity's going to drop off dramatically. we'll get that on-shore flow back as we head into the end of the week. i'll break down that forecast for you coming up rights now, let's check your drive. its been bus kbrip it's a traffic tuesday, but it's still early, mike. yeah, we have this big crash that blocked all your lanes that just cleared. we have the traffic break blocking all lanes except for your three right lanes. that's why things are backed up on the berkeley curve. the approach now looking smooth. early backup and as christina said, traffic tuesday, heavier volume. i've moved the camera, we have a nice smooth drive, but the burst of traffic heading to treasure island will mean the potential for other slowing. we're going to track the bay bridge carefully right now. we have the backup we're talking about off of the curve now. slow on the straightaway from

west grand all the way to the toll plaza itself. no metering lights on, but we have the sorting itself out coming out of the maize as well. the earlier crash i've been showing you has cleared. and the injuries sounds like someone's foot was pinned. but the rest of the crew has cleared the area. now another issue, this is bart system. reporting 15 to 30 minute delays for some of the trains over there getting out of fremont. and that's going to quickly recover as the rest of the system goes, continues on time. folks heading out of fremont and richmond were delayed because of track maintenance. only that route. the rest of the system reporting on time. rest of the transit systems are on time as well. rest of the approach, slowing approaching the toll plaza off the east shore freeway. typical as the construction crews clear from most of the areas, no problem against the bridges. we have your typical slowing come og ut of the livermore area, look at the blue over there, christina's talking about the showers and potential for wet roads. we are registering there that on our system. we might have wet conditions

hodge kins lymphoma. he did accomplish that in alamo this past june. according to his mother, he's doing wonderful. second wish, to live the life of an investment banker. and that's when the make a wish foundation stepped in. they flew him out to new york city, you might be able to catch a glimpse of trey when he helped ring the closing bell on nasdaq yesterday. and this morning as i speak, he is on the floor of the the new york stock exchange where he's rubbing elbows with the very people he apyres to be like. piz son is -- her son is smart, built computers from scratch. he obviously finished high school while dealing with disease. his interest in wall street developed his senior year. >> i just to want see him smile. and be motivated after a really rough year of missing out on a whole lot in his senior year. this is going to be, this is the icing on the cake for him. and now that he's done with

you're watching "today in the bay." welcome back. public meeting will be held today for anybody wanting to know more about the new law allowing undocumented immigrants to get driver's licenses. ab 60 was passed this year. if you want to find out more about it, you can see it right there on your screen. caltrans auditorium on grand avenue a in oakland meeting at 2:00 this afternoon. new affordable housing complex opens today in san francisco's south of market neighborhood. building at 474 natomas street. it has 60 units with rent under $1600. they are in high demand as you might imagine. more than 2800 families applied for the new farmts. today's grand opening ceremony

starts at 11:00 this morning. city college of san francisco making one last effort to keep its accreditation. the school has applied for restoration stats. that would give administrators two more years to fix issued identified by the accrediting commission. the commission voted to revoke the school's accreditation last summer. a judge however issued an injunction, that'll keep the school accredited until a lawsuit filed by the city can go to trial, but that happens in october. a new study suggests that roughly one in every three people you pass on the street has debt in collection. the urban institute study found about 35% of people with credit records have been reported to clegss for -- collection for debt that averaged $52,000. nearly half of the people in las vegas and texas have been taken to collection. the study found in san jose, fewer people are in collection, but san jose residents owe more

than anyone else. the average resident has more than 9. $000 in debt, 84% is tied to mortgage, but because incomes are higher here, people are less likely to become delinquent. researchers say wages have barely kept up with inflation in the last five years, and that's why some folks are struggling to repay their debt. well let's get a quick look at the markets this morning. jackie deangelis is live. >> hi guys, futures pointing to a higher open after a mixed daddy on monday. investors are mulling over a fewishes here, economic data, earnings reports, and also the federal reserve meeting which does start today, of course whenever the fed discusses the timing of hiking interest rates, it does peak the market's interest. look for data on home prices and consumer confidence. dow rose 22 points to finish at 16,982. snapping a three-day losing streak. nasdaq falling four points. lots of fours guys, back to you.

>> lucky number, thank you, jackie. gold rush is off. the event has been canceled because of the drought. organizers usually bring in 200 tons of dirt used to transform the old sacramento neighborhood into a scene from the 1950s complete with horses, wagons, and street performances. the problem is, it takes too much water to keep the dirt damp and then to clean it up. so officials are just calling it off. this event is usually held over labor day weekend. >> that sounds like fun. for next year or possibly the following year depending on the drought. let's check in with our meteorologist. >> panning for gold not the same without the water. kind of dusty. but you know, there is gold in them there hills. and yeah, hopefully scott's right, by next year they'll open that up. that's really the concern when it comes to the drought. what happens if we go into 2015 with drought conditions. that's when we will be talking about significant water

rationing. so of course, fingers crossed, praying for rain here as we get into next season. and right now everything's still on track for an el nino. will that bring us more rainfall than average season? that's the big question mark, but we are always looking into that for you. and we're going to let you know, as soon as we have a better handle on what's going on with your ocean current. i can tell you right now, we're still getting those bizarre currents out of the southeast and your water temperatures are still in the mid-60s for some. we'll dive into that in a minute. right now tracking showers on the radar getting into the final days of july and typically, this is the hottest week of the year for places like san francisco. we already bypassed ours here in san jose. that was the hottest stretch for us. yeah, you're not going to reach those record levels in san francisco potentially for the next five to ten days. although we will be above average, we're not talking about extreme. this is unusual, but you know what's cool about our technology here at nbc bay area?

not only we have this awesome wall, we can show you to the street level where the showers are and where they're headed. right now you can see, we're 87 comes together in robertsville here just before you get to 280. you're going to find significant rainfall taking to the north bay. look at this. if you live near mountain parkway and view eye boulevard, it's raining right now. those are the only two batches we have to show you. otherwise, just starting out mild and muggy. it's a general description for the bay area right now. low level fog, 6:09 is your sunrise, because of the midlevel clouds, it's going to be spectacular. stray showers possible for today. temps in the 80s and 0u9d. similar to what we experienced yesterday which means you'll have to use your ac, but it won't be on full blast. slim shower chance as we head through the evening hours. we'll cut that off 5 to 10%. we stand at 20 to 30% for the morning hours. temperatures right now mostly in the 60s. we're headed towards the 80s and that's it. and overall, we're going to feel a lot more comfortable once we

rooef that humidity. we're going to hold on to the upper 80s to low 90s. lose that by thursday. this is something else we're going to lose when that southeasterly pattern shifts. that's a warm ocean water. look at this, still at 64 degrees just off the coast, and santa cruz, but as you head up to the north, you're seeing the north wind return. you're back in the 60s. that's where you're going to find the cooler water. if you want the warm stuff, maybe for a surf, hang hang, scott mcgrew, i'm talking to you. san jose and san francisco for the next couple days, temperatures stay nice and level. overall, more comfortable. we'll cut it off by thursday. here's mike and your drive. better drive over the last few minutes. the big backup at the bay bridge simmered down. cleared up after that crash cleared on the approach with 880 and folks coming off the straightaway. that's better news, no metering lights yet. look at the map we're talking about, that burst of traffic heading across, up the incline and the city.

as we talked about, chances for a crash and there was a crash at harrison. there may be activity just at off-ramp. expect a little distraction. giants play the pirates tonight, shout that out in the area. there's the rest of the east bay approach. the upper east shore freeway, volume building over towards the san rafael side of the bridge. over here, we're looking at a slower drive developing and in towards livermore, typical for west 580. volume builds because it is tuesday, it starts earlier than the rest of the week. rest of the bay looking nice. northbound 101, holding steady up past 680. we'll show you at palo alto, moving northbound past university and quick look at the north bay. send it back to you. >> thank you, mike. meanwhile it is 5:21, we are hearing from a family of the 20-year-old college student killed in a lightning strike on venice beach. his uncle says it's still hard to believe it happened.

nick was always smiling. his family says he started his sunday with an 8:00 a.m. mass with his parents. >> and that does give us some level of comfort knowing that he's with god. >> so he was at the beach with friends sunday afternoon after mass when lightning struck the water, life guards found his body in the water about 30 minutes later. new this morning, what was supposed to be a three hour rail watching trip turned into more than an 18 hour ordeal. less than an hour ago, a whale watching boat carrying 157 passengers, six crew, finally returned to boston harbor. it was supposed to return 1:30 yesterday afternoon. it was on its way back yesterday when the propeller got tangled in a lobster craft. they were unable to cut it loose and trying to move passengers didn't work either. the coast guard stayed with the ship overnight providing the passengers with food, water, and blankets. divers with special equipment were used to free that ship.

teenager says she has come up with a device that would make it impossible for parents to leave their children in hot cars. that alarm would go off if the car seat starts getting hot. albuquerque teenager alyssa chavez says the invention created the hot seat working this way. put a pad inside your child's car seat. it works with a key chain, car alarm, and an app. if the child is left inside and the seat gets hot, alarms on all three will start going off. >> enough to grab people's attention around the vehicle as well as remind the parent on their key faub or their cell phone. it can happen to anybody, and i hate hearing the deaths. >> the teenager got a patten for the device and is working to raise money for a prototype. a company agreed to manufacture it. dating website accused of using its clients as part of a social experiment, kooupd subpoena defending -- cupid is

you're watching "today in the bay." so millions of people use online dating websites, but one website is taking some flak for experimenting with its users. the co-founder of okcupid.com, in one experiment they hid profiles pictures for several hours to encourage people to talk without knowing what the other person looked like. when they brought the pictures back online, many of the conversations just stopped. that idea getting mixed reviews. >> sometimes people go for generic type of person. and they date that kind of person over and over, and wonder why it never works out. and maybe it's because they're being close minded. >> the co-founder is not apologizing. quite the opposite, even saying if you use the internet, you're subject to hundreds of experiments on every site. that's how websites work. we should point out this experiment is coming out just as

>> reporter: those are the reports we are getting. as you can see san jose police are still on the scene here at this hour investigating. it's unclear if anyone is in custody. officers tell us just after 2:15 this morning, they got a call into 911 reporting five to six suspects maybe attacking someone here near plaza de cesar chavez. by the time officers arrived, they found a man suffering at least one stab wound, although scanner reports say he was stabbed once in the back, once in the neck. the victim would die at a nearby hospital. homicide detectives are working the scene. we've seen officers moving around the area looking for possible evidence. southbound market is shut down between san carlos and san fernando out here along the corridor southbound market i should say. and at this hour as we come back out here live again. it's unclear if anyone is in custody. it does appear that this scene will be affecting the morning commute, or at least people trying to get in to the downtown

core. as you mentioned at the top, this is the 22nd homicide so far this year in san jose. the 21st was just yesterday. reporting live here in downtown san jose, derek shore, "today in the bay." >> all right derek, thank you. san jose police also spending much the night collecting evidence at the scene of a deadly shooting. investigators hope it will help them find the person who opened fire around several children, killing one man. it happened yesterday afternoon on grammer c. place right off of 680 in san jose. several children were playing in the street when someone began shooting. man who was walking was killed at the scene, but it is not yet known whether he was the target. investigators are unsure whether the suspect was walking as well or driving by, but a gun was found at the scene. police say this is an area known for gang activity. the identity of the victim has not been released and police have not given us information yet about a suspect. new this morning, six people were rushed to the hospital

"today in the bay's" stephanie chuang is live at san francisco general where the six people were taken, and steph, you're hearing that one of the victims is unfortunately fighting for their life. >> reporter: exactly. good morning to you, kris. as you might imagine, one of the worst injuries was suffered by one of the pedestrians hit by a vehicle last night. in fact, upon arriving here at sf general, fighting to alive. if you look at the scene. you can see how bad this collision was. you can see there's a taxi involved, crumpled with hazard lights on as well as the suspect's vehicle. also very badly damaged. the intersection blocked off at post and jones for some hours last night. now san francisco police say it was almost 10:20 last night when they tried to pull over a van for a traffic infraction violation at post and larkin. the driver took off, sfpd says

drug conspiracy. the company charged with a knowingly deliver medical drugs and painkillers to people without prescription. authorities say fedex work on the behalf of illegal farm sis. in a statement, a spokesman says the company's innocent and plans to plead not guilty. a former san francisco state professor accused of secretly taping students while they were in the bathroom is scheduled to make his first appearance in court today. mark landis is currently unemployed, but recently taught accounting at the university. he was arrested last week after a student reportedly found a camera hidden in a tissue box in the bathroom at landis's apartment. landis facing 15 misdemeanor counts of invasion of privacy. lawyer for the man accused of impersonating a san francisco police officer and sexually abusing them says his client is being targeted because of his conservative views on immigration. yesterday in court, we heard details about that alleged crime. the prosecution says six years ago, jeffrey buga and an police

went to the -- accomplice went to a bar dressed as police officers. they told two men they were under arrest and took them to the home where they tried to sexual assault them. then they threatened them with deportation if they reported the assault. one of the victims says because he is undocumented he was too afraid to report the incident until this year. >> now, nothing has changed, he still believes herself a police officer, but now he's making a report, so it doesn't make sense. >> the district attorney's office did not comment on how this case is going. the fire has been burning 2600 achers in yosemite. one home subpoena steroid, other buildings -- 100 homes have been

destroyed. the fire only 5% contained. now it is time to look at our forecast with meteorologist christina loren. we know that if it is that broigt behind you, it is a warm start. >> yeah, mild, whenever you get the yellows over the greens a this the hour, it is mild for the bay area. although, it's nice to see a return of 55 degrees in santa rosa. that's the coolest morning you've had in over a week. 61 in oakland. you're at 63 degrees in san jose. and 61 in concord. i want to tell you what is going on out there. high pressure is the reason for this surge of subtlop call moisture. now here's the deal. you'll notice on the forecast, always scrolling here at the bottom of your screen for your specific microclimate, your temperatures really aren't going to fluctuate all that much between now and the next seven days, but what we will see is a lot less humidity as we get into the end of the week. so that's the weather story i want to focus in on. high pressure brings in all that moisture. throughout the day today, we're

dealing with a pretty fair amount, enough to keep the showers going, at least for the first part of the day. and as you can see at this point, it's not just us, it's the entire state of california getting the hit or miss very light showers. and for the most part, this morning, we're seeing the showers in central california, little bit of action here in the bay area with more significant rainfall coming through the sacramento area. as you head throughout the day today, renegade showers continue. i don't think you need to bring your umbrella unless you're blocking out sun which will play a bigger factor, but overall, use your windshield wipers two or it three minutes this morning. temps in the 60s. it's humid out there. 82 degrees on the east shore within 68 san francisco, 88 degrees in the north bay for today, and 88 degrees on the south bay side. oh, we are looking good as we head to the next couple days. temperatures stay put, that humidity's going to drop off. we're also going to bring in very rare chance for those ocean currents to really, really stay nice, at least for one more day by tomorrow though, some

how the government is responding this morning, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. well the state department has not issued a travel warnings, but there is what the cdc calls a level 2 alert, meaning if you're traveling to west africa or if you're there, be super vigilant about making sure you do not come in contact with anyone whose come in contact with this virus. bottom line, don't get on a plane and bring it back to the u.s. 33-year-old doctor from fort worth texas and woman, an aid worker from charlotte, north carolina, both were diagnosed from ebola. they are in liberia. that's where they were working with patients. although one of them had no contact with patients at all. they're trying to figure out how she was exposed. liberia shut down its borders, but that virus has now jumped to three other countries including one man who collapsed at an airport after flying in on an international flight fra

liberia. back here the state department is monitoring, providing protective equipment from the embassies abroad. the focus is to make sure that people do not bring this virus back home. there have been 650 people who've died overseas in west africa since february as a result of this virus. it's deadly and it's highly contagious, scott. >> tracy potts in washington, thank you. developing now in the middle east, the spokesman for the group that works with the u.n. confirms two u.n. staff members were killed in gaza today. it is unclear when or how they died. meanwhile gaza's only power plant was shut down overnight after it was hit with shells from an israeli tank. along with constant bombings and attacks, palestinianings dealing with power out anls. it is the middle of the afternoon now, last night was the heaviest bombardment since the conflict began earlier this month. that's video of rockets hitting

a building that housed hamas's tv and radio network. israeli war planes pounded other areas with bombs and flairs all night turning the dark sky orange. today alone, 71 people were killed bringing the total number of dead on both sides nearly 1200. new morning, another group of students who survived the ferry disaster in south korea testified in court today. 325 students were on board that ferry when it capsized and sank off the coast of south korea in april. only 75 survived. yesterday, students said they were told repeatedly to stay in their cabins. the surviving crew members including the captain are on trial facing charges that range from negligence to homicide. the white house says u.s. and european union will place new sanctions against russia. the u.s. accused russia of ramping up its troop presence on the board we are ukraine and sending heavy weapons to pro-russian separatists. u.s. says separatists in eastern ukraine are responsible for
