6:03 am
that is the latests from downtown san jose, i'm derek shore, "today in the bay." >> do we have any notion who this man was or what he was doing in the park at this hour? >> reporter: no. at this the point there were a number of beer bottles, but that's not uncommon for a city park or plaza like that. they don't know if they're related, if alcohol was involved, transients or perhaps people leaving a nearby bar. they're very, very limited on information. at least that they're releasing that the hour. >> thank you much. new this morning, six people were rushed to the hospital overnight after a van fleeing police, hit a taxi, and a couple of pedestrians. it happened overnight in the city's tenderloin district. "today in the bay's" stephanie chuang subpoena live at san francisco general where the victims were taken, and stephanie we understand that the injuries were serious for one person and they are trying to stay alive. >> reporter: yes. absolutely, good morning to you, kris. six people injured in all, one critically as you mentioned. and that would be one of the pedestrians who was hit upon arriving here at sf general last
6:04 am
night with, fighting for his or her life. you can see how the injuries could be be what when you see the scene video. two crumpled vehicles. now san francisco police say it was around 10:15, 10:20 last night when they tried to pull over a van for a traffic violation. the driver though took off. now sfpd emphasizing there was no police pursuit involved but just a couple blocks away they collided with a taxi. both flying up on to the sidewalk and hitting a person who was walking as well as a person on a bicycle. both hurt. again one of them very seriously. the taxi driver and a passenger in that taxi suffered injuries, but not life threatening. police say the driver of the van then tried to run, boarding a bus. 38 geary bus, police caught him and took him into custody as well as a second suspect. now the van we also know the two suspects were in, was reported stolen, still don't nope who the suspects were where they're from. we do know that police are

winding down which is great news. i want to kind of flatten out for you and show you three dimensionally. we don't have a lot of activity whatsoever. you can see just little flashes of green moving over the bay area, but enough to keep our hillsides nice and moist. really good news. when it comes to the situation with fire season here in the bay area, i can tell you we've officially been in the summer for over about a month and ten days, and yeah, maybe one, to retd flag warnings and that's it. that's great news. and that can all change as we get to nekd weekend. we can keep the stretch going and we cut off the humidity. that is what we're working with this morning. 6:08, beautiful start to the day here overlooking the santa clara valley. the peninsula, here's woodside. little bit of fog on the coastal side of the mountains. and ocean beach this morning, pretty shot here. nice shallow marine layer and the water temperature still in the low 60s. 62 degrees in the water here at ocean beach. 63 degrees on the peninsula right now. temperatures are going to jump into the mid to upper 80s. still going to be sticky out there by tomorrow, we'll cut
6:09 am

6:10 am
the plaza from the fairmont that was blocked for access. there are not a lot of parking lot, but you'll have to work around like a driver he talked to. it's a delay through downtown, but not much. looking at rest of the bay, smooth drive shows up for freeways, pretty predictable build there. we're talking about your approach to the bay bridge as well. no slowing new mexico the berkeley curve. let's show you the bay bridge toll plaza. we had an earlier crash there. big backup early in the commute by 5:30, things were clearing back to the normal flow, but folks bha shying away from the bay bridge. slightly lighter volume here, may send folks down to the bridge. we'll track that and look at 92 westbound. so far the drive with the taillights away from us, same pattern on a tuesday. no unusual slowing. we'll track that because any time people hear about anything over the course of the entire morning, they get shy sometimes. it's okay. now watch, it's going to back up. my fault. >> thanks mike. still ahead "today in the bay," fedex accused of a cozy

6:19 am
hot. we are going to have to deal with that humidity yet again. and everybody's asking me why is it so humid, christina loren? well i have the answer right now. and it has everything to do with this subtropical air mass, it's the monsoonal flow that we typically see this time of year. mostly it impacts the four corners region. this year the corner of that ridge has really been impacting california. and for us, we're going to see all that moisture surge to the north yet again. so high pressure sits here. you've got that clock wise rotation around it. it pulls than moisture from just off the coast of baja and brings it all the way here to the bay area, and it's that warm moist air from the subtropical latitudes coming into our neck of the woods that makes it feel so stickyicy. and that's going to be the case for today and tomorrow. you can see that here on your radar. not really enough rain for know go in and zoom it in on any of the cells. a lot of the activity is clearing up. . we're fair game for a stray shower or two as we go through your morning together.

waiting for daylight in order to process this scene, i'm going to step out of the way and over the last couple of minutes, we seen investigators out here putting down evidence markers. you can see right there near the cross walk in front of bank of america, around 2:15 a., police say they got a 911 call reporting five to six suspects maybe attacking someone here near plaza de shooech -- cesar chavez. by the time officer ace reporting lived, they found an officer with the stab wound. we are told that possibly he was stabbed in the back and the neck. now a short time later, he would die at a nearby hospital and homicide detectives are now working this scene. we've seen officer moving around the area looking for evidence. southbound market is shut down between san carlos and san fernando. this marks the 22nd homicide been the second in just 12 hours. the 21st yesterday in east san jose. officers don't believe they are connected. >> we're always concerned about violence in the city.
6:46 am
and again, no reason to believe that these are connected. the other hd occurred in east san jose, occurred here in downtown san jose. so right now, again, we're going top go ahead and take these incidents as they come and hopefully we can get them solved. >> reporter: and again as we come back out here live, investigators believe they will have this intersection at least southbound market shut down here at park avenue for some time to come. that is because again, they were waiting for daylight in order to get in here and look for any possible evidence that we are told they are also interviewing some witnesses. some who may have called this all in, but again, no one in custody, and one man has been stabbed to death, taken to a hospital where he later died. that's the latest here from downtown san jose. i'm derek shore, "today in the bay." >> thank you, derek. as derek mentioned, this homicide is the second in about 12 hours for san jose police. let's talk about the other ones. investigators looking for whoever opened fire around several children and killing a man.
6:47 am
happened yesterday afternoon on grammar si place in east san jose. investigators say several children playing in the street, someone began shooting. a man who was walking on the street killed at the scene. unknown as if he was the target. investigators in fact are unsure if the suspect was walking as well or maybe driving, but a gun was found at the scene. police say the area is known for gang activity and people who live there say graffiti in the neighborhood marks the street as gang territory. >> every other night there's some kind of fighting, shooting, drinking, fireworks, really get tired of it. and nobody seems to do anything about it. now earlier this morning, the identity had not been released and police have not given us anymore information about the suspect. and time now to check the forecast as we look live at san francisco this morning. boy those clouds are drooping kind of low. it is a muggy start to this day, but we're not going to complain
6:48 am
to christina loren about it, we're not. >> no, because everybody else will. you can read it and laugh at what others are saying about the humidity. it's actually a good place for you to vent. i won't take offense. 6:4 now, take you outside and show you what we are working with, you know what, we don't have to deal with this humidity typically here in the bay area. we get accustomed to our dry summer heat. but we've been dealing with it for the past three weeks, and this morning, it is definitely noticeable when you walk out your front door, but the benefits of that moisture, couple things to point out. a, we get these really comfortable mornings. so if you wanted to go for a bike ride, not too cold for that. you're at 65 degrees in livermore, 62 in san jose. and 61 degrees in oakland. also, it's going to take a few hours for that sun to warm up that moist air mass. it takes more energy to warm up the moisture. and that's why it takes more energy to warm up the pacific ocean than it does air.
6:49 am
it's actually really cool. we'll get into science later on, i want to start with what's happening right here. this is what we're working with this morning, shower activity, hit or miss. chances are you won't see any activity on your way to work, but if you are the one guy who's driving down 85, you have to use your windshield wipers, at least i told you about it. pacifica shows you cloudy conditions here. i want to the give you an idea of what the bay looks like. really gorgeous. also because we're in the 60s, you're also still getting those warm water temperatures. you could actually go out there to the beach right now in santa cruz and look at this, you have the entire beach to yourself this morning. so let's talk about that wind and your water temperature. because this is going to change dramatically as our wind directions change. we've had the wind out of the southeast for the past couple weeks and as a result, really beautiful, warm ocean currents. now things are already changing on the north end of the bay area. you're back in the mid-50s, but look at this. if you have the day off, you want to hit the beach, likely these numbers are going to fall
6:50 am
as we head through tomorrow, we're still getting water at 65 degrees, just offshore in monterrey. you're at 63 meanwhile in santa cruz. and you'll really notice the difference where those northerly wind have returned. 54 degrees meanwhile just to the north of the bay. so yeah, that's cool signs for you this morning. also to want talk about where we're headed because your temperatures aren't going to change all that much, but they will feel truer to form. 88 degrees is going to feel like 95 today in the south bay with the humidity out there. 88 for the north bay. by the time we hit thursday, that 88 degree reading is actually going to feel like 88 degrees. once we shave off that humidity. it's going to feel more comfortable, less sticky, more manageable, but then of course, we have to be concerned with the potential for fire danger. sop that's what we're watching for as we get into the end of the week. it's always a give and take. and the same goes in the traffic department. let's find out where you're taking off on time, here's mike. might be taking off on time, slowing a little bit. some folks nob 101 as it builds
