by the ongoing violence in gaza. this morning, the united nations is blaming israel and condemning at tack. let's get right to nbc's chief foreign correspondent richard engel in gaza city for us again. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. witnesses tell us there were no militants or weapons in this school when it was hit around 4:00 a.m. women and children were sleeping in one of the classrooms when they heard incoming fire. and the ceiling collapsed on top of them. another u.n. school struck in gaza, killing more than a dozen palestinians trying to take shelter from the war. the u.n. blamed israeli incoming fire, and told nbc news it has proof including pieces of israeli artillery rounds that rained down. israel says it is investigating, but it previously said militants fired on israeli forces from near u.n. schools and stored weapons inside them. this is why israel says it still

is bombing gaza. hamas edited and released this video claiming to show militants using a tunnel to attack an israeli kibbutz. they opened fire. enter the gate. and struggle with an israeli soldier, apparently trying to kidnap him. and then escape through the same tunnel, five israeli soldiers were killed. in gaza, many see these attacks as justified. this 16-year-old has developed a following online as the live tweeting as bombs fell. one said, this is my area, i can't stop crying. i might die tonight. she never supported hamas before, but does now. >> when i see the rockets getting to israel, i start loving them more and more and pray for them. >> reporter: israel says hamas shouldn't be praised but blamed

for bringing on this deadly war. regarding this latest attack at a u.n. school here in gaza, u.n. officials tell us they informed israel of this school's location 17 times. there are efforts under way to try and reach a cease-fire. so far without success. savannah, matt, back to you. >> richard engel in gaza, thank you very much. utility officials in los angeles are defending the response to a massive water main break that unleashed millions of gallons on to ucla campus. this as the cleanup begins. nbc's jacob rascone has the latest on this. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. the cleanup has gone on all night and it is far from over. water officials defending how long it took to get here saying they had to battle rush hour traffic, and do research to make sure they turned off the right valve. but by the time they did it, already spewed up to 10 million gallons of water. this during one of the worst droughts california has ever seen. a startling sight from the air. >> that very high pressure water

main right there is just gushing water. >> reporter: millions of gallons of water suddenly spewing from a broken water main. you can hear it roaring. from here, it looks like it is 50 feet in the air. in an instant, historic sunset boulevard transformed into a raging river. downstream from the geyser, one of california's largest universities had no time to prepare for the flash flood. the ucla bruins football field underwater, four buildings on campus heavily damaged, including the historic pauley pavilion which had just undergone a renovation. the court now more like a swimming pool. >> we have water everywhere. >> reporter: outside, water rushing into several of ucla's underground parking garages for hours. hundreds of cars left abandoned inside, including ryan gardener's. >> went down the stair well and the stair well, you couldn't even get down, it is like a raging rapids.

>> reporter: while others in calmer waters found an excuse to cool off. officials had to slowly cut off the water flow, trying to prevent new ruptures as they worked to determine the cause of one of the biggest water main breaks the city has ever seen. officials hinting that part of the reason for the break may have been the pipe is 93 years old. water officials looking at all infrastructure in light of this incident. this is as firefighters work to dewater the campus, which is closed for today. matt? >> jacob rascone in los angeles, thanks very much. natalie is here and more about the squeeze to vladimir pewten. >> president obama announced new hard hitting savnctions against russia, to get vladimir putin to end his support for rebels. the sanks target the energy, weapons and finance industries including big banks. the u.s. penalties follow new sanctions that european union

leaders agreed to earlier on tuesday. now to disturbing news out of the pentagon. on tuesday, the department of defense announced a young male was found dead near the wheel well of a u.s. multiry plane. the incident is sparking questions about security. nbc's pentagon correspondent jim miklaszewski has the story. good morning. >> good morning, natalie. the young stowaway, 12 to 15 years old, died aboard a u.s. military plight from africa to germany. as of now it appears the military still doesn't know his name or exactly where he's from. and more disturbingly, just how did he manage to sneak aboard a u.s. military plane? the c-130 is a cargo plane or gun ship is considered the u.s. military's work horse. but this week, one of those c-130s became a death trap for a young stowaway. the plane and crew made several stops during a support mission in africa. and at one of those stops the young african boy crawled up into the wheel well of the rear

landing gear undetected. c-130 hot from mali to chad to tunisia, then flew to sicily where it prerrefueled, before i arrived in ramstein, germany. during a routine inspection of the rear wheel well, the ground crew noticed an orange piece of cloth protruding from a tight seam in the metal. the boy crawled into a space so narrow, he was not visible. and it is where he died. the crew actually had to remove an outside panel from the plane's fuselage to recover the body. but the fact that a young african teen could stowaway on a u.s. combat cargo plane appears to be a dangerous breach in security. >> the aircraft is a rugged aircraft, designed to operate in austere locations. shouldn't come as a surprise to anybody that the security at some of the fields is not going to be at the same level. >> reporter: the concern here of course is that if a young teenager boy can easily slip aboard a u.s. military plane,

what about a potential terrorist? a military investigation is under way. >> we'll keep on top of that story. jim miklaszewski at the pentagon, thank you. new questions about the safety of some of the smallest cars on the road. the mini cooper countryman was only one of a dozen small cars to get a good rating in new overlap front crash tests. the tests were conducted by the insurance institute for highway safety. four cars received a rating of poor. the fiat 500 l, nissan's juke, nissan's all electric leaf and the mazda 5. the institute concluded they don't provide enough protection to the occupants compartment. the ncaa has settled a head injury lawsuit for creating a $70 million fund. the class action agreement provides money for research and medical monitoring system for student athletes. it would apply to athletes in all sports who played at any time in the past and up to 50 years into the future. and two indiana women very lucky to escape with their lives after getting caught on a bridge

trying to outrun an oncoming train. the frightening moments caught on camera. you can see the women running as fast as they can. one of them almost falls off the side of the bridge. the other trips and stumbles on to the tracks. they both disappear from sight. thankfully they were in a space directly under the train, just about ten inches or so of clearance there. they walked away virtually uninjured. apparently one just with a stubbed toe. the women faced trespassing charges, though, it is incredible when you see that video to know how close that was. >> and apparently the train operator put on the brakes, didn't have time, thought he killed them. >> exactly. >> terrifying. >> horrifying. >> what not to do. >> absolutely. >> natalie, thanks very much. mr. roker, a check of the weather. >> on today.com, an amazing photo from yosemite national park. and look at this. 860 firefighters working on this thing. its containment grown to 34%, but also grown in size to almost

6 square miles. and the danger here is one of the three giant sequoia groves being threatened by this wildfire. so we're going to continue to track this. but this fire, while the containment has grown, they have gotten it more under control, the area itself has spread. so we'll continue to watch this, just unbelievable. after three years of drought, this is what happens. on the other side of the country, we have temperatures unbelievably cold, record cold in saranac lake, 37 degrees. dulles, down to 49. knoxville, 55. birmingham, 61. atlanta, record low of 60, macon, georgia, 62 degrees. the plains, heavy flooding in denver yesterday. due to heavy thunderstorms. more of that making its way across the plains today. so we have flash flood watches from denver, pueblo, on into oklahoma city. why? because we're looking at a lot of heavy rain out of this thing. some areas could pick up another 3 to 5 inches of rain, locally up to 6 inches in central oklahoma.

purse start pulling out. it is not a complete evacuation. the doctors and nurses taking carry of nancy and dr. kent brantly are staying behind. in the last few hours, the 33-year-old doctor's condition has worsened. his mother has asked for privacy, saying their family relies on faith. >> we continue to focus on praying for kent. >> reporter: nancy only able to see her through the bedroom window. she and brantly fight the disease, the number of possible new cases grows daily, with a number jumping borders. patrick saw yes, a liberian minister, u.s. citizen, boarded a plane feeling fine, but by the time he got to nigeria, he died. his kids were expecting him home some time this august.

>> ebola came this close to coming. it missed us this time, but it might not miss us next time. >> reporter: u.s. health officials admit air travel could spread ebola to the u.s., but there's no need to panic. >> the risk of having an outbreak of ee lola in the united states is exceedingly unlikely and rare, mainly because of the infrastructure we have for good control. >> reporter: that health infrastructure in africa is not nearly as good and why ebola has spread so rapidly and why these two are among hundreds to survive. >> stephanie, thank you. >> we're joining by jeremy, nancy's mom. good morning. >> good morning. >> it must be so hard to be away from your mom as she's battling

this. what's the latest on her condition? >> we've been in contact with s.i.m. mom and dad have had an opportunity to talk with me on occasion. we're getting reports from them a couple times a day. >> i know you talked to your dad just last night. how is your mom? what is her current condition? >> she's stable. as dad put it, she's fighting through it and continuing to express a few symptoms but she's able to move around on her own and they're getting lots of fluids into her. so, she's -- she's working real hard to get through this. >> your dad is there with her, but he's unable to have contact with her. he sees her through a window. i have to ask you, because your mom was diagnosed on friday. the incubation period is about three weeks. i'm imagining your dad had contact with her during that time. how worried are you about his condition, that he might come down with ebola?

>> we're concerned. but he's been very healthy right now. as i talked with him last night, he was feeling fine. working hard. so, we just continue to hope and trust for the best in his situation. >> i guess they're monitoring constantly, taking his temperature every couple hours? >> yes. he's self-checking his temperature every six hours as directed and everything's been fine. so, yeah, he's strong and healthy right now. >> i want to make sure people understand. your parents aren't thrill-seekers. they have been in this region for more than a decade, they're missionaries. this is their calling. i understand your mom was one of the people who decontaminated workers who had direct contact with people fighting the ebola virus. >> yeah, that's correct. she was helping the doctors and the medical staff there just

containing that and serving them as best she could. >> well-being people who put themselves in harm's way to help other people. we wish your mom and your dad the best, jeremy. thanks for talking to us. >> thank you, matt. we move on to a case closer to home now. the 15-year-old new hampshire girl who disappeared last october made a surprise appearance at a court hearing of the man accused of holding her against her will. natalie's been on this story all week. >> nathaniel kibby was arraigned on federal kidnapping charges but prosecutors are saying very little as they build their case against them. 34-year-old nathaniel kibby did not make eye contact with abigail hernandez or her mother, both who sat in the courtroom feet away from kibby as he was arraigned on federal kidnapping charges. kibby spoke once, requesting a

court-appointed lawyer. abby and her mother looked on from the first row of the small courtroom as the judge set bail at $1 million. kibby did not enter a plea. according to court records, kibby has an arrest record that dates back to 1998. last year he pleaded guilty to a pot charge and paid a fine. this year he paid $1,000 fine stemming from an incident in march. sources tell new england cable news, owned by nbc news, that kibby locked hernandez in this orange shipping container behind his home, 30 miles from the hernandez's home. >> searches are ongoing right now at the kibby residence. if there is evidence other crimes were committed, those charges will be brought. >> reporter: court officials remain tight-lipped about the details of the case, instead focus on abby.

targeted nutrition to feed your active life. ensure. take life in. . good morning, 7:26. i'm kris sanchez. crews had to work quickly to put out a fierce fire in oakland. take a look at flames shooting out of a home on melrose avenue near high street. the fire pred spread to a second home. the fire took down a power line, impacting a dozen people in neighborhood. 18 people displaced by the fire but no reports of injury. the cause of the fire is under investigation. complaints about water waste are pouring in as bay area cities working to catch up with recent state water regulations. the spike in complaints comes after the santa clara water

brought by jesse ventura against the estate of a decorated navy s.e.a.l. stemming from a barroom brawl years ago. >> reporter: jesse ventura was a winner in the ring and now in a federal court. he said kyle defamed him in his memo memoir. he repeated the allegation and said he punched out ventura on a radio interview. >> then he said we deserved to lose a few guys. >> reporter: ventura a special forces veteran himself denied the whole thing happened. >> i want to clear my name. because the event and everything written about it did not happen. >> reporter: he demanded an apology but never got it. kyle was tragically murdered, shot to death in 2013.

authorities said by a troubled u.s. combat vet he was trying to help. still ventura pressed on suing kyle's estate. the jury awarded ventura $500,000 for defamation. and $1.3 million from kyle's estate for unjust enrichment from the book. a lawyer for kyle's estate left the door open for an appeal and delivered a message from kyle's widow. >> she intends to continue chris kyle's legacy of commitment to country, to family, and to god. >> reporter: the verdict is not expected to affect the movie being made of kyle's autobiography with bradley cooper in the starring role. just don't expect any scenes with a famous ex-wrestler. john yang, nbc news, chicago. >> a twisted tale.

evidence should be suppressed in this retrial because they argue that police obtained that material illegally. so his chances in this retrial could hinge on what happens later here today. michael skakel is expected to be in a connecticut courtroom today nine months after a judge overturned his conviction for the murder of neighbor martha moxley. it centers around a set of audiotapes will be admissible in his upcoming trial. >> the implication is that michael was there confessing to the crime on this tape. that's not the case at all. people will understand finally we're getting over the hump of what's true or isn't. >> reporter: they were used in the original trial in 2002. in them skakel admits to engaging in a sexual activity in a tree outside moxley's home the night she was beaten to death.

the attorneys say the jury heard a selective portion of the tape. >> it's his. quite frankly it's his and we want it back for obvious reasons. >> reporter: legal experts say the tapes could be vital to the prosecute in the retrial. >> it's an important piece of evidence for the prosecution. when you have a case that's just based on circumstantial evidence, you need every piece. >> reporter: he served time in prison for moxley's murder. a judge threw out his conviction last year. robert f. kennedy jr. praised the judge's decision with matt. >> michael skakel is innocent. he was five miles away when this murder occurred. the problem is his one crime is he had a very, very poor

take the chicken and pound it out. you want to pound it because you want to be able to, you know, cook it evenly all the way through. a few hard pounds there. >> okay. guys, how is the food? >> really good. >> simple marinade. onions, garlic, lemon juice, orange juice and you have a beautiful, vibrant seasoning fresh oregano from my garden at home. >> brynn is trying to bring the heat with the spices. we'll get those passed out. >> this is the marinade. marinade 30 minutes to an hour at home. >> what's in it? >> just lemon juice, salt, better, oregano and orange juice. the important element for me is garlic. it makes everything taste better. your breath might be a little questionable later. >> that's everybody? >> equalizer. everybody has it.

and fresh oregano. you want to marinate 20 to 30 minutes. >> let it just soak? >> let it soak. then just throw it on the grill. and if you don't have fresh oregano, you can do dry, obviously. so we have some already going. where are your tongs? >> i don't know. >> i don't want you burning yourself on my behalf. so you want to make sure your grill great is oiled down. you want to make sure the greats are oiled down so your chicken does not stick. look at the asparagus. >> you do the seasonal vegetables. >> how are the skewers? >> good. >> get some of the true skewers. >> you want to cook the chicken 3 to 4 minutes each side. make sure it is fully cooked, which is why we pounded it.

they are almost done. we take this marinade using a spoon or whatever. you want to drizzle it back over here. this is going to keep your chicken juicy and tender. no one likes dry chicken, honey. you want juicy, nice, tender chicken. the lime and the lemon juice and oranges are acidic fruits. you can stick fresh onions if you want. the other thing they are eating and enjoying over there, give us about 15 to 20 minutes on the grill. and you're good to go. >> and you made a little salsa. >> mango relish. where is our bowl? a fresh bowl here. >> it's okay. we're going to do this. when you're at home you can do whatever. it's okay. perfect. so i want you to make this, carson. this is a really vibrant salsa.

good morning. it is 9:26. i'm kris sanchez. the chinatown gangster arrested alongside state senator leland ye will be in court today. raymond "shrimp boy" chow will face charges of money laundering and plotting to sell stolen goods. his lawyer says the claims against his clients are unsubstantiated. two brothers accused in a 1989 cold case murder in the south bay will be back in court today. prosecutors want to try david zimmer and robert zimmer together, charging them both with the murder of david's estranged wife. her strangled body was found wrapped in a quilt in the trunk of her own car that was parked at san jose mineta international airport. investigators say it was that quilt that helped lead them to the zimmer brothers.

pg&e is facing a maximum penalty of more than $1 billion after it was indicted on 27 federal charges. those include lying to investigators in the wake of 2010 deadly san bruno blast and the grand jury also accused the utility of intentionally slowing the investigation into that explosion and providing false information about its pipeline safety program. pg&e released a statement saying it does not think those charges are warranted. we have a look at your weather and traffic situation coming up after the break.
