from nbc bay area, this is "today in the bay." >> good morning i'm kris sanchez in for laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm scott mcgrew. we begin with an update on the breaking affecting commuters in san francisco. crews have been working all morning to fix ab power outage to shut down major rail lines. "today in the bay's" stephanie chuang live at the church street station. stephanie, good news, muni is giving an all clear on this. >> reporter: exactly, good morning, scott. different picture from the last time we checked in here at church street station. it was packed with about 50, 60 frustrated riders. now as you mentioned that trains back in service as of about 156 minutes ago. everything returning to normal schedule. power has been restored. but for most of the 5:00 hour this morning, you had the training stopping here. inbound where people had to walk up to catch shuttle buses to the embarcadero station. a lot of these lanes converged.

ultimately causing the outage. now again, good news, it's over now, but the problem already pushed some people behind this friday morning, including people we spoke with whose work involves the stock market. >> for you. >> well the market opens at 6:30 our time and we have to be there about an hour ahead of time to be prepared. every minute late is just pushing that further behind to get ready for the opening. zbloi a lot of getting ready for the day the first hour, it pushes me back a bit. >> reporter: so again, the all clear given with the bit of good news. although people were frustrated saying it wasn't happening when it was supposed to, but thankfully the morning commute should no longer be affected by this power outage. what was a problem. now live in san francisco, stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." >> stephanie, do we know what caused this? >> reporter: we do, scott. so muni was saying the spokesman

saying saying it was a defective panto graphic. it was a part of the equipment that linked the train to the overhead wire. the power. >> right. >> reporter: that powers the trains. the crews were working on this at the junction the entire morning for some hours actually, and luckily we're able to get this back on track. >> just mechanical. all right, stephanie, thank you much. and the count down begins to opening night at levi stadium, we are now one day away from the first event at the brand new venue. but the first cleats on the field won't be the niners, it'll be the earthquakes, soccer players. morning we have team coverage about the big build up to tomorrow's event. mike inouye joins us in a few minutes with a look at traffic routes into and out of the stadium. we begin with derek shore who joins us live outside levi stadium. 44,000 folks expected to attend tomorrow's game. >> that's right. it's going to be a lot. not the capacity.

>> reporter: look at the sign behind me, it says it all right there, the seattle sounders are prepare to take on the san jose earthquakes soccer team. and tomorrow's big ticket event, the first ticketed event here at levi stadium. yesterday workers spent time making final preparations on the billion dollar plus state of the art facility. they'll be doing the same today. they'll market first major ticketed event to take place here at levi stadium since it broke ground two years ago after a lot of work. and while it won't be the 49ers taking the field, the earthquakes are excited, they've sold out more than 44,000 tickets sold. that was their cap despite the stadium's ability to house more than 60,000 fans. this all happening tomorrow, and i can tell you both teams incredibly excited for this. as we come back out here live, i'm going to bring in frank with the earthquakes. where are you guys at? incredibly stoked obviously and this is really historic event for both the stadium and you guys. >> absolutely.

this is a once in a lifetime experience. getting opening up one the premier sporting events in the world. there's a lot of soccer buzz coming off that world cup. i think they'll be treated to a special show. great to walk the stadium earlier this week. you saw the soccer stadium lines. that's the only time you'll see that here. and the players get their first look at it today. they'll be out on the field testing things out. i'll tell you what, this is one special venue. it's the real deal, they're ready to roll and we're ready to roll. >> reporter: we'll talk more in a half hour. for now, that is it from santa clara. again the 49ers will be taking the field on august 17th for a preseason game. the first major game will be tomorrow at 7:30. kind of a trial run so to speak or maybe a soft open, i'm not sure if you want to call it that, but i just did. we'll see what happens. we'll see what happens tomorrow. we're live in santa clara, i'm derek shore, "today in the bay."

>> maybe beta, being in the heart of silicon valley. you'd expect it to be tricked out, high in technology. the stadium features hundreds of wi-fi access points. one for every 100 seats in the stadium. and fans can use a smart phone app to order food straight from their seat and there are 1700 beacons. now these are cool because they'll give you directions to your seat or the nearest bathroom or the concession stand because based on your smart phone, it'll know where you are. santa clara is avoiding a repeat of the traffic nightmare last week. 28,000 people were stuck in gridlock. the city says it is waiting until after tomorrow's game before deciding on any major changes to the transportation strategy near the stadium. the 49ers say they're taking the offensive. >> this is not a normal game day experience, but that doesn't mean there's not things we didn't learn. >> team management will meet after ere game to discuss ways

driving in. and you know what, there are four parking areas with those. we talked about the red right now. 880 to 237 westbound and from 101237 e eastbound. and take both directions over to the area. it's a very popular route, but there are others to talk about. >> there are lots. vip and special access. they'll have your special directions stated on the back of your parking pass and you have an rv, i'll meet you there. parking in the blue lots. 880 west to lawrence expressway, yes a different road taking that stop. from 101, lawrence expressway north into the same area. and that's from the opposite side of the stadium. now keep that in mind, they're having folks go around the stadium in different routes. don't follow your fancy navigation program. follow what they've given you as far as instructions on the back of the pass. unusual if they are weekend's game is the great america will be open for service. even though it doesn't look like it. >> the park itself. >> during niners games, scheduled for home, have that park closed so there won't be

north bay. sizzling conditions out there. i want to show you a live look at tiburon, spectacular this morning where that fog is clearing quickly. this is an indication though of the rapid warm upcoming your way. i want to show you sunol where we have no fog to show you at this point. here, you're looking down on the east shore. very shallow marine layer, nothing above the hills to keep you cool later on today. temperatures will be hot, we have a hot weekend to tell you about as well. we'll talk about that coming up. right now let's get to the traffic alert, here's mike inouye. >> choppers over the scene of this rig. now, look at that, westbound lanes are all cleared. they have that fuel spill, then i had the directions split earlier. the fuel spill was commute direction side, and they have this, the rig blocking two lanes of the eastbound direction getting up. big rig tow and the others are there. and they're getting in lying like they're going to ride it. they're going to have to pull it out fist and then try to delight rig.

. you're watching "today in the bay." welcome back now, and happy friday to you. thanks for waking up with us. especially as we get so close to your weekend. you probably want to the sleep in. i can tell you though, good thing you didn't. because we're here to let you know, it is going to be a very hot day and mike has a couple traffic alerts. that's right, one recovering for the muni system in san francisco, better news. over here at least westbound 580 has reopened, but look, eastbound has a couple of lanes blocked by that overturned rig and actually a number of media crews. fortunately we have our chopper over the scene. and your top stories, last month american employers added 209,000 jobs making june the sixth straight month of job growth in the country. unemployment rate ticks up to 6.2% from 6.1% as more americans looked for work.

muni service is slowing returning to normal. power went out at the station where a lot of lines converged, but just about 30 minutes ago, power was restored. all lines are running and the recovery begins. the ffa restricting u.s. airlines to fly over iraq because of what it called a potentially hazardous situation there due to the armed conflict. the order comes two weeks after malaysian airlines flight 17 was shot down as it flew over rebel-held ukraine. deadly shelling in gaza. two hours after the start of a three-day cease-fire. gaza's health says dozens of palestinians were fired by a israeli tank. 15 others are reportedly injured. the israeli army is looking into the report. mainly civilians, more than 60 israelis have also died, nearly all of them were soldiers.

at least four humanitarian cease-fires have been announced, each has been broken within just a few hours. deadly ambush near the plane wreckage in eastern ukraine. ukrainians defense department says ten troops killed by pro-russian separatists. nevertheless, international investigators say they are still heading out to the wreckage of malaysia airlines flight 17. investigators do believe up to 80 bodies could remain at that crash site. the plane brought down by a missile attack last month. yesterday was the first time international investigators were allowed at that wreckage site. today death tolls could rise after a gas explosion in taiwan. five powerful explosions launched concrete, even cars into the air. at least 24 people were are dead and more than 270 are injured. among the dead are four firefighters initially sent to the scene to investigate. the ploegs hit a crowded --

explosion hit a crowded district. tropical storm bertha churning in the atlantic. warnings are in place for puerto rico and the virgin islands. the storm centered 275 miles southeast of barbados. right now, maximum winds near 45 miles an hour. bertha should pass this afternoon. and it is time now at 6:17 to check the forecast. we're going to look life at san francisco. one of the cooler spots on the map. warm and grumpy, but it won't last too long. >> make sure you get out of the good side of the bed. 60 degrees in san francisco. 61 degrees in san jose. because this heat, i can tell you, it is not going to do us any favors, everybody wants to get home on a friday afternoon, friday evening. when you add the heat, it doesn't make the situation any better, but you know what, if

you go into with that mindset, it'll be hot on my way home from work. i can't do anything about it. mild with fog and low clouds to start as we get into that all important weekend. it's going to be hot, but not as hot as today. we'll peek today. hottest day of the next seven as a matter of fact. temperatures will stay mild overnight even once the sun sets we'll be in the 80s and 70s tonight. 80s for the planes. san francisco's in the upper 60s. i took your temperatures down to the upper 60s in san francisco because i think that fog's going to stay put. at least on the coastal side for most of the day. 96 for the north bay today. east shore, 77 degrees for you. we're going to warm you up to 100 degrees in the tri-valley. drink water, seek shade. seek the extra ten minutes to find a shaded parking spot. let's get an update on that traffic alert.

couple things happening. good thing is mike inouye is your traffic man and he knows all the way around any backup around here. >> oh, you said that and there's not a great way around this one, but we'll look anyway christina. we're trying to get you the right way. just get you on the freeway again. this big rig as well as another over on that side of the rig that's down. they have to pull it away from the center divide. i think they have a strategy now and plenty of folks to help them look at it the now. two lanes are down eastbound 580, they clean up that fuel spill and westbound's restoring the traffic flow out to the maps you see out of the altamont pass. commute direction is jammed. that was the scene of the original crash. your commute direction heb a traffic break as they moved those tow trucks into place. unusual slowing there. over here we have a couple of break downs. one over on the should. the other affecting the onramp. there's a 60,000 pound truck

doing it. take dublin over to 680. that'll get you through the clear moving dublin interchange. well the rest of your bay's playing out typical friday lighter volume through the south bay. just a tiny build at north 101. peninsula, san mateo, there's no real concern. no problems at least. into the city, we had a stall southbound 101 right around cesar chavez. maybe a minor distraction and slowing there. getting into this city. in the city as we look at the bay bridge shot, we have gap spots, they're recovering from a power outage, they've restored power to the system. here's the back up at the toll plaza. fast track are a benefit for you and slow coming off the overcrossing and coming across the golden gate bridge. another note, the low clouds blocking a little bit over the north of tower. strask light. good stuff, back to you.

big rig. it looks like they'll have it out of the way fairly soon. we'll continue to cover that story for you. all right, looks like tesla's gigafactory won't be far from the bay area, relatively speaking. reno appears to be front runner for the battery factory. tesla has grading property just east of reno since june, but says that isn't a final discussion. the $5 billion factory will supply batteries for its electric cars. they could employ 6500 people. we're just a minutes away from the opening bell on wall street. gopro fell 11% after the earnings report yesterday. the first time they an earnings report since going public. here they are on their first day of trading on the nasdaq. gopro reporting a bigger quarterly los than ever before, $20 million. last year the company's net loss for the whole year was about five million. gopro will spend $34 million for the new cameras. that's where the money went.

shares falling $42.70. tech company shuttles will start paying up in san francisco today. today is the start of an 18 month test program charging shuttle companies for a stop in the city. in return, they'll be legally allowed to share designated bus stops. though some of the shuttles have to change routes to avoid the busiest stops. protesters have blocked shuttles in the past, claiming they disrupt public transit, but supporters say those shuttles do keep more cars off the road. well it's 6:26. still ahead, an update to breaking news, muni service was shut down in some spots overnight after a power outage. we'll have the latest on delays next. and sequoia trees on the brink of a massive wild fire. what firefighters are doing right now to save it. and we're back over 580 and the big rig that's overturned and the tow trucks arrived. full coverage with mike and the delays coming up in just a second.

we'll bring you updated as soon as they come into our newsroom. and the developing story in the middle east. a cease-fire between israel and hamas has apparently failed. "today in the bay's" tracy patriots joins us live in -- potts joins us live in washington, it lasted about three hours and people are dead. >> reporter: yeah, there was high hopes that it would do a lot better than we saw last weekend. and it did much worse. just within hours of the cease-fire beginning early this morning, israel says one of its soldiers was kidnapped by terrorists and after that, everything fell apart. a massive man hunt for the soldier initially. there were reports that two israeli soldiers were killed. and then the palestinians saw some of the heaviest fighting that they've seen, 40 people killed within a matter of hours from what they say were israeli tanks. and the big question is how of all of this going to affect peace talks? the whole reason for the three-day break, a moment of

opportunity, secretary of state john kerry called it was to allow the israelis, palestini s palestinians, hamas, to go to egypt and cairo, egypt was sponsoring peace talks to try to extend this beyond 72 hours. the state department said one of its experts there with the delegation now. all of that's up in the air. not clear if that'll progress or how they that will progress with the violence still happening now in israel. >> tracy potts live in washington, thank you. today people who live near yosemite national park will be ate loued to return home. firefighters say they are making progress battling that wild fire that is now six square miles big. the wild fire is 58% contained, but people from the area can return home now. there are still worries that the wild fire could move two mimes north toward a grove of giant sequoias. crews already dug fire lines around the sequoias during last year's rim fire. crews have widened those fire

lines this time around as a precaution. let's check your forecast as we look live at downtown san jose. it's going to be hot today. i think thaez a good kags of just how hot, let's check in with meteorologist christina loren. >> yeah, that sun blazing in at this early hour, not at good sign for our inland valley spots, but the best part about living here in the bay area. you can pick and choose what kind of weather you want to enjoy. courtesy of all of our microclimates. now for today, your inland valley spots will be hot, but half-moon bay, you're at 55 degrees, only climbing to about 60 degrees by lunchtime. so if you want that cool traditional bay area foggy feeling, head down to half-moon bay. other it'll be hot inland. 61 degrees start in san jose, but we're starting out the day at 66 in livermore. it's mild. we have low clouds out thereto. especially at the immediate surface and coast this morning.

it burns off quickly. as we head throughout the day, hottest day of the week, in fact hottest day of the next seven. temperatures down, you'll notice on the forecast at the bottom of your screen, not by much. it's going to be warm as we get into this week and next week, above average. things in perspective helps. i like to let people know the average temperature for san jose which is about 85 degrees this time of year. we're going to be in the low 90s for today. seasonal averages towards the middle of next week. 92 degrees for the south bay today. 68, san francisco. 96 degrees in the north bay, looking comfortable today on the east shore. a's are coming back home. 75 degrees there and we're looking good for the first part of the day in the tri-valley, we're sparing the air, 100 degrees is the forecasted high, like i said before, temperatures down and we'll tell you what's going on across the state of california, maybe you want to get away. just trying to get to work though, could be problematic for

you, traffic alert. yeah, we the issues for the bart metro system because we had power issues at the junction, those have been resolved. minor delays now, still recovering between church and embarcadero. now a picture of a tree down affecting line 41. this is near columbus, major intersection, and so the buss are rerouting. if you're driving, watch that. over there because of this big tree down. all traffic is affected right now. now other traffic we'll get to the the freeways, 580, chopper's over this. rig on the shourd. they have one of the tow trucks hooked up and dragging it away is what it looks like, that's two lanes of the eastbound 580 commute. that's counter to your main commute westbound, and that's better news they reopen the westbound lanes about an halve hour ago and traffic flowing through the area. look at the maps. we see the backup, at once forms out early in the commute, you can't clear it. slow past livermore avenue. then clearing to isabell

prompting a travel warning for americans. the cdc warning americans not to travel to three west african countries. ginnny, liberia, and sierra leon. its killed more than 700 people this year alone in those countries. the hospital in atlanta is preparing to receive an american patient with ebola. the cdc says the chance of it spreading in america is extremely low. if it were to happen, the cdc says it is well equipped to handle it. new this morning, second water issue has been reported near the ucla campus. broken pipe is leaking water at a target store in westwood. the fire department mng managed to shut off the leak after a come up hours and estimates that a couple thousand gallons of water may have spilled out. but that is still very small compared to tuesday's water main break that wasted 20 million gallons of water. meanwhile, this morning, tow trucks have streamed in and out of the parking garage at ucla campus which was flooded on tuesday. yesterday crews removed nearly

300 cars on the upper levels of the garage and that's not damage, those cars will be taken to another lot where they can be picked up later today. santa cruz officials say it'll take days to clean up anchovies that turned up dead in the harbor. the hunl school of fish swam into the harbor wrend night. and there was not enough oxygen and they died. they closed the boat ramp. it stings and the chemicals left behind not good for boats. harbor workers say this is the worst fish kill they've seen since the 1980s. it is 6:41 now. coming up an update to breaking news, tree down in san francisco, and now muni service is blocked. and more breaking news at san jose international airport. problem that's delaying flights, we'll tell you all about. live at levi stadium one day before it hosts the very first sporting event ever.

first ticketed event happening tomorrow at 7:30 with 40,000 plus fans, you gees coming in here to see the earthquakes. hopefully beat the sounders tomorrow. that's the latest from santa clara, i'm derek shore, "today in the bay." >> thank you, derek. santa clara police department says its ready for the crowds at levi stadium, the police department has hired a i did addition officers to patrol areas on event days. some officers may pose undercover as opposing fans. a command center inside the stadium includes a police briefing room and an in-house detention center in the basement. santa clara trying to avoid a repeat of last week's traffic nightma nightmare. 28,000 people were stuck in gridlock after a house event. they all tried to get into the stadium. it's going to wait until after tomorrow's soccer game befored didding on any major changes to its transportation strategy near the stadium. the 49ers say they're taking the offensive team management says it'll meet every single game trying to fine tune that traffic

flow. mike ineye joins us now. mike the 49ers have a detailed traffic plan. any time you have something new, it's going to be crazy. >> they're planning for the games, there was an open house, this is a nonstandard event as far as scheduling goes. there you go. if you're going down there. lucky enough to take me, public transit. you can take caltrans. it's a distance away, but you can hop on vta and there's a vta station that end steps away from the stadium. that's a great america station. if you feel you want to drive or need to drive, look at this, there are four parking areas, each labelled with its own color and within the areas are parking lots labelled with numbers. it sounds like a secret code and it kind of it. they do this to disperse the traffic flow planned for candle stick where you had to get off at one or two ramps. getting in towards the big lot there for the whole stadium. most people are going to be in the red parking lots off 237, see them right here. that takes you down great america parkway. and from 101, 237 east, exit at

great america parkway and take that, follow the signs through the local area. now there are other lots. vip, special access, those are noted with green and yellow and you can see those own the web with that main map. if you have an rv, 880, 237 west to lawrence. expressway, that's a different road. 101 northbound, and turn on the area. follow the signs that's approaching from the opposite side. as you see, if you use your navigation utility to the stadium, it'll tell you the same route for everybody, don't do that. use the navigation that they've given you and folks at levi stadium, they've planned it, folks approaching from different exits, off-ramps, and different parking lots. follow those directions and hopefully they can go according to plan. and hopefully that'll be a better flow of traffic. the park is open from 10:00 to 10:00 on saturday. >> this one time. >> yeah. >> typically, 4ers games will be

the rig. big jam out of the pass, but then the rest of the tri-valley moving smoothly, still an issue with the disabled rig over there. deep that in mind, slowing approaching the scene, but the rest of the dublin interchange moves smoothly towards san ramone. easy drive around the rest of the bay. i want to show you video of the big rig because we had that video in there. that was overturned eastbound. fuel spill was on the top of the screen. that's what caused all the bog downs. there's distraction because of the activity over there you've take an few minutes ago. that's why we have slowing in both directions still. all right guys. i'm sorry. back to the maps. we're talking about a unlushlly big back up over here as well. approaching the bay bridge off of this 24. the east shore freeway shows volume of traffic. this is a friday keep in mind. this is a heavier volume. the metering lights are on over to the city. and look from the emeryville camera. moved it over, you see off of the maize and off of the east shore freeway and off of 580 we have both of those roadway vs.

slow on the approach and that's the reason why you see the orange and red on our sensors. into the city itself, golden gate bridge also is slower, just on the north side with the fog coming across the bridge. not a major concern because of the light volume of traffic. in the city itself you have of course have muni issues recovering, but you're going to talk about that. over to you. >> thanks very much, mike. 6:55 now, breaking news, a rough morning for muni. first a power outage on the rail lines, now a downed tree is causing trouble for if the bus line. stephanie chuang is live in san francisco with more, and steph, it has been a mess in the city this morning. >> reporter: a little bit, kris, good morning to you. this one though, the second problem of the morning will impact muni riders, drivers, and pedestrians here in north beach. we have at columbus and vallejo where the city of department's publics work crew are trying to chop this tree down and remove it from the street here off of columbus. in the last ten minutes, its really made a big difference

here. the tree took down actually a muni line, and you can see that just behind to the right there, muni confirming that was its line. it had to shut offlines to the. pge saying none of their lines were affected. as well as the inbound bay shore kpres route delay. rerouting in this area. this is again the second problem for muni this morning. for most of the 5:00 hour. the inbound trains stopped at the church street station where people had to then catch shuttle buses to the embarcadero station. the source of that problem was a power outage that. happened at the junction where a lot of those lines converge. causing, caused bay defective graph which is what connects the train to the overhead wire for power. ultimately causing the outage. it does not know why that piece of equipment failed and is investigating that. back here live again in north beach, the tree slowly getting removed. after this is done and the crews

take the tree and the debris away, muni will have to figure out how to restore its line there. there is traffic impact with groont stockton closed as well as broadway to green. again this impacting not just muni bus riders, but the drivers in this area. and i was just talking to san francisco police who say this is a very popular pass for pedestrians to get to downtown. luckily it happening before it gets really packed and that gets closer to 8:00 in the morning. now live in north beach, in san francisco, stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." >> stephanie, thank you. san jose postal work charged with stealing mail could enter a plea in court today. hefs arrested for reportedly stealing packages with coins and gift cards and jewelry. when investigators searched his home, they also say they found about 18 pound of pot. he faces 15 years in prison. a private investigator says the santa rosa mom accused of grabbing the throat of a boy at her daughter's school left marks
