morning. >> good morning. san francisco, we have the low clouds, but really all across the bay area from san jose up to the north bay and all across the east bay, lots of gray skies right now with some mist and drizzle across the golden gate bridge in the coast. clearing skies then around lunchtime, still a little bit on the hot side. valleys today climbing into the 90s. the sea breeze will pick up in the afternoon. early afternoon game time for the a's looks good. mid-70s as the clouds try to break up and as we watch that as well as later on this evening we have opening evening for levi stadium. san jose earthquakes hosting the sounders, coming to town. should see 70s with sunshine. nice and comfortable out there at the brand new stadium out there and we'll see cooler changes ahead. full look at that coming up in just a few minutes from now. >> we'll hope everything goes without a hitch. >> thank you, rob. we are just hours away from opening night at levi stadium. tonight the 44,000 soccer fans will be pouring in for the first game inside the $1.3 billion

stadium. look at that live picture just beautiful. it's almost hard to believe the stadium is open already. the san jose earthquakes playing the seattle sounders tonight at 7:30. months of planning and preparation will be put to the test, on the field, in the stands, and in the parking lots. derek shore is live outside the stadium this morning with more on the big day for the south bay, good morning, derrick, you have a special guest. >> reporter: i do. in just a moment it is a very big day here in santa clara and the entire south bay. of course levi stadium making their final preparations to host their first ever ticketed event as the san jose earthquakes take on the seattle sounders. that is a soccer game, not a football game. it will mark the first major ticketed event since levi's broke ground about two yrs ago after a lot of work. workers spending time making final preps today on this billion dollar plus state of the art facility. we've already seen a few crew members reporting today to duty

continuing the preps for the 7:30 game. and while it will not be the 49ers taking the field, the earthquakes are very, very excited. i'm going to bring in joe cannon, he is a former player with the earthquakes. he's very involved in the team. tell me, how excited are you guys and do you believe that the stadium's ready? >> yeah, i think honestly, from a team standpoint. the team is really excited to get on the field. i think yesterday at practice, they're just in awe of this facility. and then as a franchise, we have the utmost confidence. i mean the 49ers are most of the most classiest sports organization in the country. we feel the game, even though it was capped at 44,000. soft opening, trial river, it's going to go off and be a memorable experience, not only for our fans, sports fans. >> as we look at the players yesterday, obviously a lot of excitement, but little bit of nerves when it comes to playing the first opening game. i mean you think they're going to win first of all and do you think the fans and this whole

those beacons to give you directions to your seats, nearest bathroom, or concession stands. our coverage continues online at nbcbayarea.com. just click on the levi stadium guide for everything you need to know before you go including video from the 49ers about the various parking lots. now we head over to breaking news. san jose police are investigating a homicide this morning. and they say a man was shot and killed near monterrey road and eden view drive in san jose. the 911 call came in about 1:30 this morning. officers say the man suffered at least one gunshot wound. he was pronounced dead shortly after police arrived. police have not released a suspect description. this is the 23rd homicide in san jose this year. chaos on the streets of san francisco. this morning new details on two major crashes involving muni yesterday afternoon. the first one happened when a

muni bus slammed into the back of a dump truck sending 12 people to the hospital. that was geary in japan town. then minutes later. another crash. this one in the bay view district at third and ennis. police say a big rig made an illegal left turn in front of an oncoming light rail train. that sent 11 people to the hospital. witnesses described a frantic and it of scene. about 40 people on the train when the big rig made an illegal left turn. muni says the driver was experienced, he saw the truck and tried to stop hitting the emergency brake and cutting power to the light rail vehicle in case of fire. witnesses say the impact sounded like an explosion. it took several hours to clear the scene and restore service. muni says in the last year, more than 20 drivers have made illegal turns on third causing similar accidents. >> looking at the signage, we're working on the education campaign for, not just trucks, but for all vehicles to go through here.

>> the driver of the truck was not injured. he says he did nothing wrong, but signs posted in the area is a no left turns. the crash is under investigation. more now on the other crash where a bus collided with a dump truck in japantown. 20 people were injured there. police say the muni driver swerved to avoid one dump truck then slammed into another. 12 people were hospitalized. none of those injuries are left threatening. eight others treated at the scene. witnesses on the bus say riders were thrown out of their seats. >> i was half way back on the left side, wham, and i just, a big collision of some kind. and people were all over the place. >> muni says the driver was tested for drug and alcohol, that is a standard procedure following a crash. a frightening armed robbery caught on video. now police are asking for your help in tracking down the gunman. police say this is surveillance video from tuesday night at a seve ron station on byrd avenue in san jose. the gunman is believed to be

oakland where the skies will clear and today the art and soul festival happening there. the dancers of oakland will be pmpbling an incredible vertical dance on the side of oakland city hall. if you're in the east bay today, worth stopping by, that's happening at 3:00 today in oakland. members of an east palo alto church say they've been robbed by the man they trusted most, their pastor. the head of the born again christian center church had the church property transferred into his name and put it up for sale. now is church members say he's nowhere to be found. "today in the bay's" mark matthews has more. >> reporter: pastor andre harris preached from this church for almost 14 years. a man his parishioners believed who turned his life around after eight years in prison. he was now a man of god preaching that the key to success was family. >> brings tears of joy to think about it. you know to see somebody that's back with family, that's back with a child.

>> reporter: that was from an interview he did with nbc bay area in 2009, just after he was honored by the county for his work with former inmates. what the members of his church didn't see, was that pastor andre harris was putting his wife's family on the board of the church trustees. >> our trustee board dwindled down to his family, his nieces and his wife. and so then they were able to just do things, you know, that weren't right. >> reporter: what they did was transfer ownership of the church and the pastor's house, both properties put into the names of andre harris and his wife. harris then put the house up for sale with his brother kenneth harris, a real estate broker, and his sister-in-law, rona harris notarized the deal. family had provided harris and his wife roughly $400,000 for the house and they hope to sell the church for just under a million. >> one of the ushers found out about it, we confronted him.

>> reporter: the deacon says that when the church members showed up to protest, pastor harris told them they'd all been ex-communicated. >> he says that oh no, you're no longer a member of the church. >> and i couldn't believe that that came out of this guy's mouth. >> reporter: the church members feel their pastor who worked to rehabilitate ex-cons, they feel pastor harris conned them all. >> it's horrible. >> reporter: andre harris's attorney declined our request for an interview, but i asked him and asked andre harris's brother, the real estate agent, if they knew if andre harris was still in the bay area. no comment. the lawsuit attempting to block the sale of the church is due in court in november. reporting from east palo alto, mark matthews, nbc bay area news. coming up a massive clean up in santa cruz this weekend after thousands of dead fish float to the surface. we'll tell you thousand happened, next -- how it happened, next. cloudy start for the bay area this morning including in san jose, hinting at cooler

you're watching "today in the bay." you're looking live outside at san rafael. beautiful day shaping up there. and let's take you over to sunol. where we're seeing some blue skies, a little bit hazy and gray across many of our microclimates and rob will be along in a moment to just tell us how the weekend weather will be shaping up. we'll get to our news now. the smell is intense at the santa cruz harbor after thousands of anchovies floated to the surface. now a massive clean up operation is understoodway. boat owners and -- under way. boat owners say it's ripe. massive school of fish swimmed in because of the nutrient rich waters but many suffocated because there wasn't enough oxygen left. they are being sucked up a and hauled off.

the boats are stuck until the fish is gone. that could take days. and it is a sad sight for many. >> to see all these little fish upturned with their white bellies up, it's very, very sad. >> if you let it sit, then it eats into your fiber glass. then it starts leaking. >> it doesn't end when the fish are gone, they will have to scrub is their vessels. aside from the smell, the weather in santa cruz, pretty fantastic place to visit today. unfortunate to the have that because its been a nice escape from the heat for the locations in the last couple days. but the ocean air-conditioning will be turning a bit stronger, little bit later on the weekend and a sign of a healthy marine layer, low clouds all across the five city camera views. showing you low clouds, san jose, out towards the peninsula and into the east bay in san francisco for you this morning. we'll see low clouds breaking up as we head into lunchtime today. right now, low clouds spread out

across san francisco over towards oakland into the north bay and santa rosa, patches of low clouds in the san jose. right now santa cruz, you have the low clouds and as we go through the morning, mist with some of those low clouds around the coast and san francisco. then by lunchtime, clearing skies at least inland, but plan on clouds hanging out around pillar point in pacifica for the day. valleys toasty. overall, this is typical for august. you get the 90s inland, 60s and 70s near the coast. we're about to see some cooler changes. the marine layer which has been squished down below 1,000 feet will deepen. we should see cooler changes coming up into the week ahead. here's a look back at the lacest on the drought. worse across california as we've gone from april to bay. you can see the expax of the d 4 highest level on the drought scale for california. now all across northern california affects nearly all of the bay area except for parts of marin county. between now and october again that has dry pattern we'll see

in a typical year that will keep these conditions really quite dry until we get the fall and winter rain to come back. closer to home, the temperatures we're seeing this weekend typical for this time of year at upper 80s around the south bay. temperatures cooling a couple degrees tomorrow and there you'll see san francisco not too bad. they're keeping those coastal temperatures a bit more mild overnight we've had the lows in the low 60s, but yes, cooler changes coming up as the sea breeze turns stronger. we're going to see cooling around the coast and bay. you'll see the low clouds pushed inland. not quite out to sunol but out to fremont. you do have the low clouds waiting around the central bay this morning. this is how the weekend is going to shape up. monday, we're going to see a deeper marine layer. more cooling inland by monday even towards livermore. so, some heat relief is on the way. today you'll see temperatures from the 80s and 90s inland around san jose 87 degrees.

at the forecast, good morning. >> low clouds looking back to san francisco this morning. but a little exception to the rule. those of you watching us in the tri-valley this morning, you have sunshine. high clouds there. 60 degrees, but low clouds across the bay for the morning. temperatures warming around lunchtime as the skies begin to clear across the bay. still some 90s for the valleys today, but the sea breeze will be increasing which will lead to cooler temperatures around oakland today. partly cloudy for the stay of the a's game around 1:05, temperatures in the 70s. later on this evening, very nice in santa clara and san jose. numbers in the mid-70s around game time for the san jose earthquakes hosting seattle sounders out there at the opener for levi stadium, could not ask for a nicer summer evening to open up that brand new stadium. >> it's going to be beautiful. trs minus 12 -- t minus 12 hours until the opening. between the quakes and the seattle sounders. game tomb, 7:30, and what

happens tonight will be closely watched as a trial run for the niners season. months of planning and we're about to see how things go on the stands and in the parking lot. "today in the bay's" derek shore is live outside the stadium, good morning, derek. are you the first super fan out there this morning? >> reporter: i guess so, maybe. good morning to you, yeah, and the workers actually were probably here before me and they continue their final preparations, you know, the stadium, beautiful, and the work continues just about 12 hours before the seattle sounders come in here to take on the san jose earthquakes in the first ever ticketeden event that will -- ticketed event that'll take place place in the facility. they'll be doing all of those final preparations. it'll mark that first major event since levi study yaum broke -- stadium broke ground two years ago after a lot of work. while it'll not be the 49ers, the earthquakes are excited.

that's the cap despite the stadium's ability to house more than 60,000 fans. while we will have to see what happens later on today i can tell you both teams are incredibly excited and i'm going to bring in joe cannon, a former player with the earthquakes, and you are very involved with the team. you have recommendations for some of the fans coming out here to make sure everything goes smoothly, tell me about that. >> i think with the first big event, it's very unpredictable how the crowds are going to surface and what direction everyone's coming from. so the advisory that we're giving out is just to come early, get into the stadium, gates will be open earlier than most games will. get inside the facility, enjoy it, take it in and really get the experience going. and we want ur fans to -- our fans to just be relaxed, get ready for a big game and a big moment. >> this is a big moment for you guys, you are working on an arena yourselves over by sjc, how's that coming along? >> stadium's doing great.

they do, they'll take the utmost precaution to protect workers, patients, and the community. >> the centers for disease control has advised against all the unnecessary travel to sierra leone, ginnny, and liberia. gaza city was hit by air strikes as israel is searching for a soldier suspected to be captured by militants. they hit a high-rise in the city. air strikes flat and mosque and a family home where four people were killed. the disappearance of an israeli soldier and the clashes that followed shattered an internationally broken cease-fire that was supposed to last 72 hours. the goal to open talks in cairo for a longer truce. officials say more than 1600 palestinians and 60 israelis have been killed since fighting began nearly a month ago. the water is mostly gone. now crews are finally clearing out the ucla parking structure

good saturday morning to you, we are seeing a lot of low clouds around the bay area with san jose, 61 degrees. mostly cloudy skies. mist with a low clouds in san francisco. one exception to the rule right there in the tri-valley, that's pleasanton right now where we have high clouds there. 60 degrees further inland across the east bay into oakland. mostly cloudy right now. temperatures starting off close to 60, 56 right now around santa rosa. you can see in the san francisco. down the coast to santa cruz for now. we should get some clearing out there on the south coast through the afternoon and the low clouds will break up around san jose as we move into the afternoon. so we've got low clouds for you this morning, misty skies on the coast, and the skies will turn

mostly clear across the bay. right around lunchtime and for the afternoon, still another hot day, inland valley soaring into the 90s, but the sea breeze will turn stronger and taking that marine air and pushing it a little bit further inland by the time we get into monday and tuesday of next week. so as we get the weekend started, again, update on the drought, gotten worse as you would expect it would through summer. as we go back to spring, april into may. we had that d 4 exceptional drought that expanded. latest update this week. and as we go through the bay area, you could see how most of it, except for marin county, won't be until october, november in the rainy season we'll start, hopefully see some improvement, we're seeing there around the state. you see the conditions that we're seeing there statewide, quite dry, and as we get through the weekend. it'll be a very warm weekend for areas south of san jose. you'll see the temperatures climbing into the mid-90s around saratoga and morgan hills.

san jose, 87 degrees. 60s to mid-70s for you today. san francisco upper 60s to low 70s. san jose and san francisco though, you'll start to see the temperatures drop a little bit. not so much of a change for san francisco, temperatures staying close to 70 for the weekend. san jose beginning to drop a couple degrees monday and tuesday as the sea breeze turns stronger. that's going to take an edge off the heat. still another hot afternoon, you're going to see the temperatures climbing into the mid to upper 90s. notice fremont, not too bad. 87 degrees. you have the fremont festival of the arts the next couple of days, should be cooler sunday, morning clouds, probably hanging on until about 10:00 in the morning. should be quite nice out there around fremont for this weekend. santa rosa, 85 today. if you're wondering when the heat is going to break for our friends in the tri-valley, tomorrow, lower 90s. that's the sea breeze turning a bit stronger then once the marine layer thickens up, close

237 and great america parkway. popular for sure from 880, 237 west and 101137 east, either way, take great america parkway south and follow into the red lots. and again, if you don't have to go to the red lots and chemothe instructions. for vip and special access, you will have your special routes and other people for our views they're going to be parging in the blue lots. join you there for tailgating if i can. 880 to the westbound lawrence expressway exit. 101, north, notice it's a lawrence expressway getting over and not the great america parkway. that's the other side of the stadium. now the reason they've done that he is they're trying to disperse traffic around the stadium, there've been a lot of studies to determine traffic flow and this is the best way. avoid using your navigation device and use the instructions that they have given you here. use the app, or instructions on the back of your parking pass, that's your best way over there. i hope off great time over there at levi stadium there.

you're watching "today in the bay." time now 7:50, thanks for joining pus. you're looking live at foster city. cloudy start to the day, but rob says the clouds will head away and clear out for a postcard perfect day of weather here in the bay area. this july morning. oh, august actually. i should say. way beyond the call of duty, two union city cops took a routine call and turned it into a life changing experience for an elderly woman and her neighborhood. answering the call not to just protect, but also to serve. "today in the bay's" sheryl herd has the heartwarming story of kindness. >> burglary in progress. >> reporter: he has been responding to calls for ten years. but the call to check out a

possible burglary inside this union city home was different. >> we kind of checked the perimeter to make sure, see if there was a forced entry. >> reporter: he spotted a broken window and that's what he saw blood. >> the burglar probably cut himself, and then fled out the front door. >> reporter: he was determined to find out who the home belonged to because when he forced his way inside for a welfare check, he was stunned by the broken furniture, piles of clothes, and animal feces on the ground. >> you could see from the condition of the house there's no way somebody was living in here. >> reporter: next door neighbor carroll helped solve the mystery. >> she's, you know, pretty private lady. and we don't see her much now that she lives with her mom. >> reporter: ellen owned this union city home for close to 40 years. but she hit a rough patch seven years ago. >> i had a roommate for 40 some

odd years, she died in 2007, she had a stroke. >> reporter: and then ellen developed heart issues of her own. three open heart surgeries, and now she takes care of her 97-year-old mother who lives in oakland. she's been waiting to make a move back into her home, but her health and money made it impossible. yeager wondered if she considered selling her home. >> and i said this is my home, i'm going to move back home. and he said, i can do it. and he just said, you can't handle this. >> reporter: yeager and sergeant steve mendes asked the community for help, and they got an overwhelming response. box stores and local businesses donated everything to bring aye lean's home back to its original lester. >> there is no way that a total stranger says to you, i'm going

are on, we just saw a few minutes ago these recycling bins and trash cans put in place for anybody who may want to be out here tailgating as well as some reseptember calls for hot coals obviously with the barbecues expected out here. again 7:30 today as the earthquakes take on the seattle sounders soccer team. 44,000 fans expected out here to file in and they are really requesting everybody get here with plenty of time. you can take a look at the stadium before you actually take your seat. and enjoy the game. 44,000 was the cap, but this arena can actually take up to about 65 or 60,000 fans as they get in here. and that of course is just in order to keep everything calm and make sure as their first time out everything goes smoothly. i can tell you some of the streets already in the area have already shut down. santa clara police shutting them down so there will be traffic in the area, and the recommendation again, is to come here with plenty of time. that's the latest here from

santa clara, i'm derek shore, "today in the bay." >> thanks for the update this morning. it is not all about sports at levi stadium. art lovers have a spot inside the suite tower to admire original work. curators unveiled a new art collection yesterday. 200 pieces lined the wall. there are larger than life portraits of 49ers legends plus sketches of california icons like john stienback. here we want to feature requester photos from levi stadium, post on twitter, use the #i'matlevi. southern california backyard is buzzing with search and rescue teams hoping to remove a rare find. it is a fossil of a bay lean whale that's believed to be at least 16 million years old. there are only about 20 of its kind anywhere in the world. the artifact was actually first discovered in 1978 by the family who lived there. they called a local museum, but
