while two wildfires threaten hundreds of homes in california. and an entire town is told to be ready to evacuate. we're live at the scene. and drama at sea. a group of people had to abandon ship. we'll show you the rescue, as it was videoed. we'll show you today. august 5, 2014. >> from nbc news this is "today" with matt lauer and savannah guthrie live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. good morning, everyone. welcome to "today" it's it's 7:00 a.m. on the west coast. tuesday morning. a tragic story to tell you about out of afghanistan. another deadly insider attack at a base just west of kabul. let's get to the pentagon and

jim miklaszewski. >> reporter: at least one high-ranking american military official was killed in in attack, sudden attack at this training base for afghan soldiers in kabul. according to official, the americans along with german allies had gathers with afghans at this base for some kind of event or meeting when suddenly, one of the afghan soldiers, at least somebody dressed like an afghan soldier opened fire with an automatic weapon. as many as 12 were seriously wounded. right now, the death toll stands at one senior high-ranking military official killed. according to officials we're talking about here at the pentagon, some of the wounds are so severe that that death toll is likely to rise. >> i have to ask you. there was a time we were talking about the insider attacks all the time. it seemed like it was a downward trend.

this is a disturbing tre ining different direction. >> reporter: there were steps taken to put the americans in a safer position when working side by side with armed afghan soldiers. and that did lower the death toll some what. but, you know, working side by side with armed afghan military right now is absolutely critical to the u.s. strategy. in fact, it is the strategy going forward to work with armed afghan military to train them and advise them and there is no way that -- according to military official, that you can guard against this kind of attack at all times an unfortunate incident. according to a senior official here this one is really bad. >> jim miklaszewski, thank you. breaking news on the ebola crisis as well. the specially equipped plane bringing back the volunteer just refueled in bangor, maine, it's

now on the way to atlanta. kate snow is standing by at emory university hospital. >> reporter: the big question is, will nancy reibold walk into the facility behind me? we expect an ambulance motorcade. we're learning this morning more about the experimental drug treatment that nancy and kent brantly, who is being treated here, have had that may have saved their lives. this morning, nancy will arrive at emory hospital in the fight for her life. the 59-year-old american mother contracted ebola. she has been taking an experimental medication. >> her appetite has slightly come back. as a matter of fact, i talked to

her husband. she asked for her favorite liberian meal. >> reporter: the virus was ravaging her body. so three doses of an experimental medicine were flown to liberia and the two americans decided to try the treatment that had previously been used on monkeys. brantly told colleagues he was dying. his wife asked friends to drop everything and pray. after his first dose of medicine, he made a remarkable improvement. what sit that's working? >> when you and i are infected with any virus, we make anti-bodies for the virus. that kills it. these are special aent bodies just for ebola. >> reporter: once at emory,

they'll each have a room in a special isolation unit. lab tests are done inside. any contaminated materials are cleaned of virus and incinerated. while there are no other confirmed cases in the u.s. right now, hospitals are on edge. on monday, a man with a fever was put in isolation at new york's mount sinai hospital. this morning, we expect nancy's son, jeremy, to be here to greet her. he says the first thing he's going to say to her is i love you, followed by encouragement for her. we know god is good, we trust him, he said. >> nice to have her back in the country. thank you. >> earlier this morning, we talked to president obama's national security adviser. i began by asking if u.s. officials are confident that

this can be contained to africa. >> we are actively collaborating with our african partners in west africa to help them contain and address this challenge. we have surged up to 50 workers from the centers for disease control and our disaster response teams. we are actively helping them to detect and contain and manage the outbreak. the risk to americans is deemed by the centers for disease control to be very low. and that is because of the nature of the transmission and the fact that it is largely contained now in the west african region. this is not a disease that can be communicated by sneezing or airborne or food or water. it requires a degree of intimate contact. and it requires a person to be actively symptomatic. to be contagious. and we have the protocols in this country to manage any isolate any patient who may present with those symptoms of the disease.

>> i want to move on to the after leaders summit for which you are appears today. but let's turn to the news of the day. we just learned that israel and gaza have agreed to a temporary truce, this cease-fire. but then again we've seen them collapse within minutes or hours in the last couple of weeks. how confident are you that this time it's different and the cease-fire will hold? >> well, we think it's very important that it holds because there's been a great deal of suffering in israel and in gaza. and our hearts go out to the people of israel who suffered rocket attacks and tunnel attacks and of course the horrific suffering in gaza. so we are hopeful but mindful of the record that these cease-fires haven't held for very long in the past. we think it's very important both sides remain committed to it. and more importantly that they use this opportunity of the 72-hour cease-fire to begin the negotiations that we have been working so energetically through secretary kerry, president obama, and others to get off the

ground so that the underlying causes of the conflict in gaza can be addressed at the negotiating table. >> i mentioned this african leaders summit. all of these leaders coming to washington in an unprecedented way. part of this is to encourage business leaders in the u.s. to invest there in africa. but then we hear about the ebola virus. does that make it harder to sell -- of course it's just confine topd one region, but does it make it harder to sell the u.s. businesses that africa is ready for their investment? >> well, what makes this is a unique occasion is that first of all to start, we've never had a gathering of up to 50 african heads of state with the american president in history. and we are bringing together business leaders and society leaders, faith leaders all who understand the importance and potential of africa. today's event is truly unique because we have some of america's leading ceos, some of africa's leading ceos, all of whom understand, as do

a flash flood, literally go two ins of rain. an airman get out. they rescue another cup. you can see the power of the water, literally washing a crown victoria and a pri r irksprius road. this is southern california, fiver inches of rain turned parts of the valley there into mud bogs. covering homes. one person was killed. we're going to continue to see more rain today. flood willing be a possibility in this area. stretching from the plains all the way back into northern california and northern nevada. flood watches for nevada, colorado, idaho. could be another two to four inches of rain. for the first time since 1982, we have two tropical storms

making their way to hawaii. hurricane iselle and tropical storm julio. we look for iselle to come across the big island sometime thursday as a category 1 storm. and continue on it way. then right on it heels, in time for the late week period, late weekend, early next week, we have julio. if it does become a hurricane, it will be minimal. probably a 1, because they are very good waters along this area. just to the south, much warmer air. that is more energy nfor the hurricane. we'll continue to track that. we haven't seen this in over 30 years. they're not used to it. >> california, a little bit of rain there, hoping it can help firefighters as they battle out of control wildfires. there are fears that lightning could spark more flames.

miguel almaguer is there. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. over the past 24 hours we have covered two different fire zones as crews do all they can to protect lives and properties. in this community, 70 structures are on the line. >> summer of 2014. we've got three fires burning. >> reporter: a front row seat to a raging wildfire. >> that's an angry fire. >> reporter: julian murphy watches as two massive fires threaten his property in northern california. evacuating his wife and kids to a neighbor's house. >> did you see that? >> yep. >> reporter: only to be evacuated again a few hours later. >> it just took off. i mean, there was fire tornadoes spinning up. the entire column was turning. >> reporter: the two fires sparked within a few miles of each other are bearing down on the town of burney. destroying eight homes, a local

restaurant, and a fire engine. in california, a state of emergency. 14 major wildfires. in oregon, air national guard pilots captured this spectacular scene above the gulch fire. meantime on the ground, crews attack the front lines near ashland. the fire burned right up to this ridge. crews are still mopping up hot spot. this is the fire break they've inserted. if the blaze hops it, it will make a run right up this mountain. a new study shows more homeowners are in harm's way than ever before. 1.2 million homes across 12 western states considered to be at high risk from wildfires. >> there are far more people in homes on the frontline of these wildfire risks. and the reason for this is that we've allowed more development in these high-risk areas. >> reporter: for homeowners like the murphy family, a hazard that used to be seasonal now a year-round way of life.

with if two wildfires burng here this morning, one is 20% contained, the over 0% contained. crews say they're making progress. the rain today will help. they're concerned about thunderstorms. the crews will be doing all they can to build the containment lines to snuff out remaining flames. >> miguel almaguer, thank you. natalie is here with a scare over great britain. >> fighter jets had to scramble to escort qatar airlines flight after a report of a possible device on the plane. armed police took the man off the plane with handcuffs. four people are recovering this morning, injured during severe turbulence on a flight over florida. the flight was headed from ft. lauderdale to asheville, north carolina, when it hit rough air

and went into a sudden dive. some passengers suffered minor injuries. the plane was diverted to st. pete-clearwater where it landed safely. russia is increasing its battalions on the russia/ukraine border. according to estimates, russia has battle-ready troops within just a few miles of the border. it comes as the ukrainian military has been gaining ground with separatists in the country. an incredible rescue on sunday, just 12 miles off the hawaiian island of moloka'i. all caught on gopro cameras. it's a dramatic rescue on the open seas all caught on gopro cameras. a 21-foot boat carrying four adults and four children battered by waives. >> it got scary rough real fast where waves were breaking over the bow. it happened really quick. before we knew it, too much

water was in the boat. and i rel lay couldn't steer well or maneuver. >> reporter: stranded and sinking 12 miles from the nearest shore, the eight passengers did the only thing they could. >> we knew it was going to go down, so we started getting anything we really needed like life jackets. i put my fins on and we all jumped in the water and the boat went over. >> reporter: they then detached three kayaks from the boat and tied them together, and activated a beacon that told teams of their distress and location. >> once we received the distress alert, we immediately launched a helicopter. >> reporter: hovering helicopters managed to grab the passengers from the sea. all eight escaped injury and now have the ultimate home video to prove it. >> it could have been bad. it really could have. you have to have a lot of respect for that ocean. >> and fortunately, a happy ending there. well, you know, you should not

be picking up hitchhikers, but probably okay in this case. a baby seal that needed a ride. he befriended a pair of surfers in the uk. he hopped on board the catch a few waves. hang ten. when they were done, the seal followed the surfers back to shore to wave good-bye. aw, i want to adopt that seal. >> i could watch all hour of that. >> al? >> we're all going upstairs for sardines. it's going to be great. let's show you what we're looking at today. scattered showers and thunderstorms. we have warmer weather and sunshine in the pacific northwest. showers in central and southern florida. look for rain in northern new england. and western pennsylvania. we'll have your local forecast and western pennsylvania. we'll have your local forecast

you're watching "today in the bay." a very good morning to you, it is 7:26 i'm laura garcia-cannon. mountain police looking for more possible victims of a handy man accused of sexually abusing two young girs. the 31-year-old has been living at the moffet mobile home park in mountain view where he worked as a handy man. two sisters ages seven and ten told their parents a man touched them inappropriately. detectives arrested the man on friday. police say he has no criminal record. santa clara county leaders will consider a plan to give unaccompanied children a safe place to stay. this morning, immigration reform advocates will hold a news conference urging the board of supervisors to put a system in place to support undocumented

children who have come to the concerned alone. it would give the children temporary housing for host families and community groups. thousands who cross the border to escape from violence are being held in texas and in southern california. right now i want to look at the forecast with rob. kind of an unusual day in august. >> very unusual to have measurable rainfall. .007 of rain in napa, now moving through the tri-valley and across the 580 commute across the pass, that's where the moderate shower activity is right now. just lighter rain north of san ramone. mid to upper 80s south of san jose. mix of cloud and sun. little bit later on towards this evening, and you could see santa rosa northward, slight chance of isolated thundershower today with 80s in the forecast around pleasanton then temperatures around to climb beginning tomorrow. south bay we've had another crash north 101 in the past

half. look at mapts, approaching the area, again northbound 101 finally has another crash cleared. things continue to recover actually. this is better for tuesday than we typically see. smooth drive across the dumbarton and san mateo bridge. slow 880 southbound typical out of hayward and fremont. the approach, look at the green blotches over the area. earlier rain there and the bay bridge toll plaza, no problems just the backups because of the metering lights. >> thanks so much. we'll be back with another local news update in a half hour. see you then. frpz

we begin with the recently fired director of the ohio state university marching band. he'll talk to us live if a moment. first, the investigation that the school says exposed sexually explicit and hazing rituals within the band. here's kevin tibbles. >> reporter: from superman soaring to t-rexs chomping. the ohio state marching band's fantastic formations earned it the nickname the best damn band in the land. but now, band director jonathan waters is out of a job, following the university's two-month investigation into the band's culture. in a statement late monday, an osu spokesman said the investigation revealed an environment conducive to sexual harassment. that waters was aware or reasonably should have known

about this culture and failed to eliminate it. >> it's pretty damning stuff. >> reporter: among the findings? written x-rated quizzes for new band members with questions like how many people have you had sex with. x-rated trips for band members. and sexually explicit nicknames. printed in direct ris and printed on t-shirts. waters played with the band in the '90s and in 2012 became the school's youngest band director. his attorney says waters started anti-sexual harassment and alcohol programs long before the university started its investigation. >> jon experienced inappropriate conduct when he was a rookie in the tuba section. as marching band director, he set out on his own to eradicate inappropriate behavior. >> reporter: as waters fights to clear his name, the band promises to march and play on. >> and jonathan waters is with us now. good morning. good to see you. >> good morning. >> let me ask the basic

question. do you feel scapegoated here, that you're being blamed for what amounts to apparently decades of a tradition, a culture within the band? >> indeed, this is an entrenched culture that dates back to the 1930s. you know, we have taken steps to eliminate activities in the band. and what is so shocking by this report is its inaccuracy and its one-sided nature. and so that's really what we're here to do today is to get the message out. that this report was one-sided. and i'm here to stand up for our students. >> let's talk about the report. it lays out inappropriate practices, sexually explicit names for band members. can't repeat them here. new band members ordered to simulate sex acts. newcomers to run down the bus aisles while upper classmen try to tear off their clothes. and questions about fell

bandmates. very, very sexual. were you aware of those practices? >> i was aware and i took great steps to eliminate them. we have eliminated all of those things. we've eliminated the midnight ramp. we have eliminated these rookie quizzes. let me be very clear that harassment of any type is not tolerated and should not be tolerated. and we have, as a staff, and as leadership team, taken steps to eliminate those behaviors. >> you know what the school says, though, that a lot of these changes like getting rid of the midnight ramp where they run out in their underwear. or sometimes naked and perform a ritual on the field. they say you didn't change that until after this investigation started. if you didn't like this culture which you say dates back decades, why didn't you end it on your first day? >> the culture in our band is entrenched. and because it's entrenched, it doesn't turn on a dime. so on my first day i did, indeed, engage with our leadership and our leadership team in trying to shape that

culture and trying to eliminate poor behaviors. we have instituted a wonderful program of leadership training for our student leaders as well as sex abuse training and alcohol abuse training. all of these trainings that we have instituted in our band have made it truly a better place since i've been the director. >> let me just press you on that. you're saying, it doesn't changeover night. it changes over time. you wanted change to come from within. why? you're the band director. i mean, this is nonsense, some of this. why don't you go in and say it's over. >> i have. i have, indeed. in fact, this report cites things that happened before my leadership of the band. >> you were assistant band director for ten years though. >> i was. and i did move to change those behaviors. but i couldn't effect total policy at that time. when i was director i assure you that we moved very quickly to take steps to complete these things. and i'm just very disappointed

that we didn't get a chance to finish that job. you know, all of our wonderful students, the message that i want to bring is the wonderful students who've marched in that band, the students who have sacrificed and given to the university, the alums who have given of their time, and the fans, they know that that report is flawed. they understand because as they read this report, they say this is not the band we know. >> i should mention you have a lot of support in this town. people have signed petitions. a lot of the former band members and current band members say they were not talked to for this report. they support you. what is your next step? will you sue the university to get your job back? you said this was your dream job. >> this was my dream job. i love ohio state. i love those students. i'm here to set the record straight. i'm here to point out the fact that we have taken tremendous steps to improve the culture and move the band forward. let me just put it in terms of this. you see the great performances on the field. you see the wonderful things

crashed a wedding when a photographer flying a drone lost control leading to a painful bump and a minor cut to the groom. yet despite the risks, wedding photographers say increasingly they're hearing requests for drones. but veteran photographer carl bies says the weddings he shoots is about respect and not turning it into a flying circus. >> the biggest compliment is they don't remember me photographing their wedding. i think having a drone there would leave a mark on people remembering that one sound of the drone buzzing above. >> reporter: the faa reports increasingly that they're hearing from commercial passenger pilots about drones that are in or near their flight path, and that is a safety concern. how is it we're able to fly a drone here this morning? it's because we're indoors. and this air space here is not controlled by the faa.

♪. here's savannah guthrie. >> good morning. we have breaking news this morning from afghanistan. a deadly attack at a military base by a gunman wearing a military uniform. among the victims a two star army general. two others have been wounded. we want to go to the pentagon with mick for the latest. >> u.s. dod and u.s. military officials confirm a two star u.s. major general was killed in that assault today in kabul. according to the officials, they

are not going to release the identity of that major general until sometime tomorrow officially. in addition, there were two others killed. they're believed to be perhaps afghan or even german officers that were there. the shooting occurred at the afghan national military defense academy. a training facility where the americans, other forces and afghan leadership had gathered to talk about the training regimen for the afghan military when suddenly one individual, believed to be an afghan soldier, sprayed the crowd with an automatic weapon killing the two star general and wounding at least 15 other americans. u.s. officials caution that the overall death toll could rise because of the severity of the injuries. by the way, in return fire, that gunman was also killed. no motive for that attack a. those kind of green and blue incidents where afghans attack

their u.s. military trainers have really subsided in the past several years. but according to u.s. military officials, you can never protect those troops when they're side by side with armed afghan military 100% of the time. according to one senior d.o.d. official in remarks about this incident told us this savannah is a bad one. >> standing by at the pentagon, i want to return to retired colonel jack jacobs on the phone. to pick up what mick talked about, there was a time in 2012 where afghan soldiers would turn on the coalition forces trying to train them. it was quite common, have become more rare. our withdrawal of the troops of afghanistan is predicated on training these afghan forces.

>> i spent time in vietnam as an advisor. there were incidents from time to time with soldiers turning on their own troops or advisors. it happened very rarely. almost never was it a function of the soldiers being complacent. that's probably here. frequently these things happen as a result of troops being annoyed that their assignments or not getting paid or just some personal animosity and rarely a function of there being a plant from the other side. it's very disturbing in any case. particularly so since we've spent a great deal of time and money training these troops. >> a sad story we hear about a terrible attack at a military academy in afghanistan. a high ranking army general among the dead this morning.

this vaccine that they had. meantime, little bit of a scare here in new york yesterday. a man with a high fever had recently travelled to west africa, returned to new york and went to the hospital. he had signs of gastrointestinal disorder and a high fever. so he went to new york's mt. sinai hospital and they immediately started treating him and raised concerns because of where he traveled. but they said it's unlikely he has ebola. they feel they don't believe it's actually the ebola virus. but it is raising concerns and questions. of course the cdc saying here are the things you need to watch out for. telling people what the symptoms are. >> and also putting it into realistic perspective. you can have symptoms but they don't want people to believe everything that fits into what you've heard, fever, upset stomach. >> a transmission is very

difficult. >> bodily fluid. >> you can't just catch it by touching somebody. >> it's not airborne. it's exchanged through bodily fluids. i think matt lauer said we idolize athletes, but researchers on the forefront of creating this serum, for example, that we're just learning about and other infectious diseases, they are 24/7 looking at ways to cure these deadly diseases that affect the globe. it's so intriguing. >> sometimes putting their own lives on the line. >> and people like nancy writebol who went there as a missionary and was basically helping clean and decontaminate the areas that are effected. and dr. brantly there to treat the patients. they really are heroes and deserve the best care and treatment which they're getting now. >> the other thing, there's an amazing piece of video. let's just roll it. i want you to hear this from the top. there's a flash flood in las

vegas. >> get out! get out! >> about four inches of rainfall. >> it's like a river. >> it turns this road into -- >> look at the guy. >> you see from the nearby base get out of his car. and another group of airmen rescue folks out of this prius. you see the crown vic. that prius really amazing stuff. they had flash floods in southern california yesterday. one person was killed. in the meantime, we've got these wildfires going on continuing out west. a state of emergency, 14 major wildfires going on at the same time. air national guard pilots captured that scene above the gulch fire. and there's one whole town that is getting ready that's on alert to evacuate in northern california. but they're still worried about this. because lightning strikes could

set off more wildfires. as many of these have been set off by lightning strikes. >> we see flash flooding often, but such a tremendous force of power. you wonder how much time they had. no time. >> three inches of water is enough to knock you off your feet. a foot of water is enough to move a car. >> and people think they're in suvs and they can get through that. you really can't. >> that's why it's turn around, don't drown. this became a raging river in a matter of about five minutes. >> another story that a lot of people are reacting to. ohio state university, their amazing band considered by all accounts one of the best college bands in the country. i think they might be the best. you know, there's a controversy hovering over the band after allegations that students were

hazed, sexual harassment amongst band members. the band's director was let go, jonathan waters. he's now the former band director. he was fired to weeks ago after an investigation found a culture of harassment and alcohol abuse. students mimic sex acts. just a laundry list of things as a parent it's your worst nightmare. you send your kid to college and this happens. anyway, savannah spoke to waters on why he did not stop this culture. here's what he said. >> and because it's entrenched it doesn't turn on a dime. and so on this first day, i did, indeed, engage with our leadership and our leadership team in trying to shape that culture and trying to eliminate poor behaviors. we instituted a wonderful program of leadership training for our student leaders as well

as sex abuse training and alcohol abuse training. all of these trainings that have instituted in our band has made it truly a better place since i've been director. >> in a statement late monday, a spokesperson said the investigation said waters was aware or should have known about the culture but failed to eliminate it. he was a band member back in the day. then he became an assistant director and then the direct. >> assistant director for ten years, so he knew what was going on there. i'm sorry, you're the band director. day one you just come in and you say it's done. no more. >> you say you're a scapegoat when you've been a part of that culture for so many years. >> i don't like to read into people, you get under the hot lights of a studio, you're being interviewed. but i wish he had said, parents, trust me. i wasn't aware. just something more heart felt. >> but he was aware.

>> i'm saying whatever his stance is, he's saying you can't turn around the titanic or whatever. i just needed more emotion. because what some of these students went through is frightening and they don't deserve that. i wanted more heart from him. >> pretty horrific and clear cases of allegations of abuse. all right. this happened to me the other day. has this happened to you guys? you're walking down the street -- i think this happens more to women, not guys. you walk down the street and a complete stranger says hey, pretty lady, why don't you smile. do you get this? smile, al. well, it happened to me. i was at the airport thinking i got to get home and get my bag. and a guy said with such a pretty face, you should put a smile on it. i was like, okay, creep. anyway, this was a schedule on "the huffington post." they started this discussion.

but rachel krans photographed women when they're told to smile. first, because i'm intimidated by you. another, because i'm worried about finding a job when i graduate. reasons, perhaps, why i'm not smiling. and i smile all the time, if i'm not it's just because i'm tired. which is probably what a lot of us would say. what would you respond? >> what would i write? usually if i'm not smiling with -- because i think i smile a lot probably to the point people think i'm ill. >> on the street? >> yeah. random thoughts. you're preoccupied. but usually i think -- >> but it is true. i do think about, you know, what you put out there. it's hard. it is weird though. >> because you are a stranger

west. so we may see some more flooding out there. especially anywhere from a half inch to an inch or more of rain. and in places where it has already been inundated, it's going to be a problem. we've also got double trouble. first time since 1982 we've got the potential for two hurricanes affecting hawaii. first we've got iselle 1115 miles east of hilo. also tropical storm julio. so iselle makes its way and started to come across hilo right around thursday. and then continue on. and then right behind that, we're going to be watching julio. it should be a minimal hurricane when it comes on shore, but we will continue to m and we're seeing some unusual weather of our own with showers in the north bay, lake county into northern napa county, and what's left of the showers around east bay hills have wound down for the moment. and today we'll see temperatures in the 80s around the south bay,

became a different person. that's what we all really want. i wanted to know who i was. >> you wanted to be different and better. tracy, what made you believe in him? here you were living in the basement of your family's home. you called yo urs a spouse in waiting. what made you believe he could turn all of this around and be your husband? >> i believed in the greatness in darryl. his heart has always been revealed. he has a great heart. he had issues, though. he had to make the choice to get well. there's a chapter in this called the spouse in waiting. >> what does that mean? >> that means when you are doing the right thing and you're walking the right way and your spouse has not. your spouse has checked out. and that's several people. in this book we've suffered adultery, addiction, everything. and maybe people haven't gone down that far, but we challenge reede readers to get real with themselves. even if you haven't gone down as far as we have, you can still make this work.

>> most people who go that far down the road, that road usually leads to divorce. why didn't it happen for you guys? >> well, i think because we put principles. we put biblical principles in our life and god at the center of our life. a lot of times we're so selfish, people are so selfish. it's about us, us, us. what i realized, it had had to be a me first. i had to get me well first because it's a we. i think a lot of times we come in and want this great marriage and white picket fence that life is going to go great. but there's a lot of rooted issues from childhood or something that i needed to deal with. i think when we all deal with our issues, it brings us together. and then there could be a we. it's got to be a me and then a we. >> it's a fascinating read. i think a lot of people can learn so much from your story. darryl and tracy strawberry, thank you for sharing it with us. you can read an excerpt on today.com. up next we've got all the

a very good morning to you. it is 9:26. i'm laura garcia-cannon. the fremont man accused of breaking into a home, tying up a little girl and raping her mother will be in court today. police say jamala morris was wearing a mask when he broke into an apartment in fremont and waited for the mother and her daughter to come home. it happened on saturday night. investigators say morris was waiting in the girl's room and when she came in, he grabbed her and threatened her with a gun. when the mother went into the room, morris reportedly tied them both up with duct tape. during the attack, a relative of the woman came home, chasing that suspect office. morris was eventually caught hours later. officers say they found the victim's wallet and other evidence in his home. tonight, the san jose city

council will discuss the results of a recent poll on the sales tax hike. the city talked to 1,500 people by phone and found 67% would support a 4% increase going into the city's general fund. 65% would support a tax increase if the none would help fund better roads. 71% said they would be okay with the higher sales tax if it went to public safety. a look at weather and traffic right after the break.

yesterday, his fishing boat ran aground along the san francisco shoreline. now crews are trying to haul away the boat. it's been spilling fuel for more than 24 hours. tonight, the san jose city council will discuss the results of a recent poll on a sales tax hike. the city talked to 1,500 people by phone and found 67% in san jose would support a quarter cent increase with the money going towards the city's general fund. 65% would support a tax increase if the money helped fund better roads. 71% say they'd be okay with more sales tax if it went to public safety. well, we'll take a look at weather and traffic coming up after the break.

well, good morning, everyone. thank you for joining us. i'm scott mcgrew. >> i'm kris sanchez. we're learning new details now about the boat that ran aground along san francisco's shoreline. as crews towed it out to water, the skipper's criminal history is coming to light. bob redell is live at ocean beach with the latest. good morning, bob. >> good morning, kris and scott. you can see her there behind me here on ocean beach, the paloma, 38-foot fishing vessel, still grounded here. a salvage crew was able to use that heavy machinery to drag her during high tide this morning, about 70 feet closer to shore. they'll try again to get it completely out of the water during the next hig
