it's economnomnomcial. ♪ nom...nom...nom... from nbc bay area, this is "today in the bay." well good morning everyone, happy thursday, i'm scott mcgrew. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. tlots get to this morning, let's check the forecast with rob mayeda in for christina loren this morning. check out the fog, low clouds around the peninsula east bay seeing the temperatures in the low 60s currently. as we go through the morning, low clouds and mist breaking up across the bay. cloudy near the coast, but valley temperatures today warming quickly. we'll be easily climbing to the 80s and low 90s this afternoon. closer to 90 in saratoga and morgan hills. san francisco, highs in the low

70s with numbers in the upper 80s around the north bay and temperatures near 90 around livermore and pleasanton. we'll talk about the warming trend and the latest on the hurricanes approaching the hawaiian islands coming up in a couple minutes. new this morning, russia has granted nsa leakerer edward -- leaker edward snowden three more years of asylum. snouden's lawyer -- snowden's lawyer made the announcement earlier. in may, snowden told nbc he misses america and wants to come home, but hit does not think he would ever receive a fair trial. well perhaps the last time the prosecution had a chance to argue its case ginnis olympian turned accused murder oscar pistorius. over the past five months, pistorius's past has been put on

display as exgirlfriends, neighbors, and doctors testified about him and the night he shot and killed his girlfriend vee va steenkamp. pistorius insists he mistook her for an intruder. prosecution says he shot her on purpose. for the first time in the trial, fathers of pistorius and steenkamp were in court sirting on opposite ends of a long bench. defense will make closing arguments tomorrow. this morning, corruption case involved leland ye. lawyers for ye along with chinatown gangster raymond shrimpboy chow and keith jackson there will be in court for status conference. that's where the judge establishes a time frame for the case. might set a tentative trial date. the three men along with 26 other defendants were arrested in an fbi raid in march. they fact various charges including corruption, reasonable care tiering, bribery, and gun

running. the woman behind the security breach at san jose international is on charges of trespasses. she regrets what she did. >> it is by no means an adventure or anything, because i could have gotten in much more trouble. >> on monday, hartman snuck past security and made it on to a southwest flight without a ticket. she would not say how she got on because she doesn't want others to copy her, but she ace being homeless factors in. >> i have $4.25. >> what are you going to do? >> i don't know. i'll just have, i think, i think i've been on enough programs where people recognize me, might give me a dollar or two. >> this is not hartman's first arrest. she has tried to board planes wouts tickets several times before. now that begs the question how did someone with the history of

sneaking past security manage to do it again? officials try to keep the breach quiet? we now know hartman's ability to sidestep the screening process and board that plane without a ticket would have remained a secret if a well-played source did not contact nbc bay area. tony broke that story on tuesday. >> if our source didn't contact us, would this have remained a secret? >> we would, we would not have communicated it to the general public. >> is that fair to the public? i mean they're paying for this security system, doesn't the public have to right to know when it fails? >> in our opinion after the investigation, it did not fail to the point that there was a security threat. she was screened like every other passengers here. >> it's unclear why hartman was not on a security watch list despite having successfully gotten past security twice at

course sky above it where it's just after 1:30 in the morning. quite literally the calm before the storm. we have team coverage this morning, rob mayeda tracking the path of the storm. bob redell, one flight to hawaii is already canceled. looks like you're staying here, bob. >> reporter: yeah, good morning to you laura and scott. it's this flight here at 9:05 that's been canceled. we just got off the phone with the duty manager to ask if that one's canceled, why not the 10:46? it doesn't make since that one is going and one was canceled. same situation at norman, they have two flights this morning that are still ago and one flight at oakland also showing to be on time. now people leaving the bay area headed to hawaii expecting paradise will most likely be disappointed as you're aware, the governor of hawaii declared a state of emergency as tourists and residents prepare for not one, but two major hurricanes.

first iselle, then julio, both expected to hit the island state back to back within 24 hours. >> it's very rare. and it's that 1-2 punch we're worried about. i don't think either is going to deliver a knockout, but one-two punch could be serious. >> these would be the first hurricane tops hit the aloha state. >> reporter: it killed two people, destroyed more than a thousand homes. reporting live here at sfo, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> all right, preparing there, thanks, bob. let's turn over to rob maye mayeda. these could be the worst storms in decades. >> yeah, looks to be for sure one of the two hurricanes will be hitting the islands. the other good news, the path is curving away. lepts start with the cell coming in later tonight, category one hurricane. it passes over the big island right south of hilo there.

and tracking south as bringing probably tropical storm force wind to the other island. so that is the skrel. julio, little bit of a different story, it is a stronger hurricane, category two there of winds of 100 miles per hour. watch the path here, turning to the north and away from the islands, could see a glancing blow. tropical storm force winds perhaps on islands around maui and the north shores. the second storm for now looks to largely avoid the islands on saturday. so the cell the main event we're tracking for you. back in the bay area, 50s and 60s. humidity's still high, but better today. the showers have moved off to the east. stronger sea breeze every the next couple of days that will keep at least the coastal areas in the 60s, but inland temperatures strengthening out towards livermore. highs climbing into the 80s and low 90s.

by the end of the upcoming weekend. sea breeze will turn stronger as an area forms offshore but you'll lead to the cooling trend and the seven day forecast at the bottom of the screen. today's forecast around the bay area. numbers in the mid-80s around san jose should see low 90s around saratoga, san francisco highs in the upper 60s to low 70s. and around the north bay, numbers near 87 in san rafael. pleasanton and san jose, temperatures climbing up today. todays some 90s in the area. we'll see the trend continue through the weekend. notice the temperatures here starting off at # 0 on saturday then cooler on sunday, but the stronger winds giving us heat relief towards the tri-valley. here's the check of the morning commute, early to start, but construction perhaps causing issues around parts of the bay area this morning. east bap construction, 580 eastbound only one lane from the boulevard and also on 80

illuminated, love the new additions to our bridge. how beautiful it is. this early in the morning, 4:43 right now. happening today, lawmakers on capitol hill will learn more about the deadly ebola outbreak that has claimed the lives of nearly 1,000 people. the head of the cdc and other experts will talk about the likelihood of the outbreak happening here in the u.s. concern is growing since europe has reported its first case, however, medical experts stress that ebola is spread through direct contact with contaminated bodily fluids which is why we're seeing extraordinary attempts to isolate patients. >> they'll come into an emergency room and say i have a fever, diarrhea, the first thing you ask is what is your travel history? if they say i've been to a west african country, immediately you would isolate them and protect the people taking care of them. >> yesterday the cdc upped its alert to the highest level signaling a serious health emergency it believes will last

a while. it will also send 50 medical experts to africa by next month. and today, president obama is expected to sign a bill into law aimed at helping veterans. the $16 billion measure will help veteran health care facilities hire thousands of doctors and health care workers. the bill will also make it easier to fire senior va officials. the bill is in response to reports of veteran's dying while waiting for a doctor's appointment and employees covering up those delays. bank of america will pay nearly $17 billion to settle investigations into bad mortgages. for that and the rest of the news before the bell, let's turn to courtney reagan live at cnbc world headquarters, good morning, courtney. >> reporter: good morning, scott. cnbc heard reports that bank of america will pay to set al probe into the sale of toxic mortgages before the financial crisis. now the deal isn't final, it could still fall apart, but reports say bank of america will pay $9 billion in cash and the

rest in assistance to struggling homeowners. it comes after a phone call last week between bank of america ceo and brian and u.s. attorney general eric holder. futures are higher for stocks fell flat on wednesday. weighing developments in ukraine and two mernler -- merger deals that derailed. we'll get data oon unemployment and -- on unemployment and consumer credit. dow rises and nasdaq up two points. well barnes and noble it is teaming up with google to take on amazon. book buyers can get same day delivery through google shopping express service. unlike amazon which relies on where houses. they rely on air courier. scott, we tested it out at cnbc, it's a cool service.

>> i use it maybe twice a week, i love it to death. >> wow. we need to go shopping. >> cool. >> you notice you need tooth pat, iphone, go for it. >> earrings. >> i can do that. >> let's do it as we talk to rob mayeda with the forecast. >> yeah, gravity usually always wins with those things. >> tell me about it. right now we're seeing temperatures in the 50s and 60s outside right now. san francisco very interesting. this is looking more like a summer morning around the bay. you have the fog there, 60 degrees. misty skies with the low clouds. that could impact perhaps your golden gate bridge commute or you could run into misty skies at times, but the tropical moisture that kicked off the summer showers moved off to the east. we're getting a preprooef for now for the monsoon moisture but it could be coming back later next week. meantime temperatures inland warm. high pressure strengthening, warm us up today into probably

tomorrow. then for the weekend, the sea breeze will turn stronger as an area of low pressure forms offshore. that will lead to cooler temperatures, but possibly scoop up monsoon moisture as wet head into the weekend. the changes ahead we're going to see will be that high centering again just a little bit off to the east in an area of low pressure forming here offshore that could try to scoop more monsoon moisture their way. possibly by the late sunday into monday, you'll see some changes perhaps in the seven day forecast. more clouds coming in. doesn't seem like we're going to shake the monsoon moisture. could be coming back again early next week. temperatures around the bay area, 84 degrees. at least in downtown san jose. south of downtown, climbing to 90 degrees around saratoga. highs around san francisco today once the low clouds break up. upper 60s to low 70s and north bay, we'll see highs in the mid to upper 80s today and around pleasanton and livermore, temperatures climbing into the low 90s today and the temperature trend should trend a little bit cooler on sunday. we talked that low forming

offshore, that's going to pump up the ocean air-conditioning but bring in midlevel moisture too. stay tuned, we could see scattered showers once again early next week as we get a round of monsoon moisture as we approach next monday, back to you. >> quantity we really need, thanks so much. happening now, hundreds of people in oregon are leaving their homes behind hope something will remain when fierce flames calm down. overnight firefighters evacuated nearly 300 homes, about 75 miles east of portland and told another 14,000 people to just be ready to leave. the wind whipped fires startedtize, so far, no homes have turn burned. scott's valley is selling recycled water to people outside city limits. >> it comes a as way to share the excess water to others. according to the santa cruz sental, the water would be used for irrigation and construction. money from water sales would go into the city's general fund. and today, rare albino mixed redwood tree is going to be moved because the people were

able to raise money to pay for it to be paid for. >> it is dug up and replanted at the station. the tree was blocking a construction path for a smart railway and it's too close to passing trains. transportation officials wanted to cut down the tree, but the residents were not happy about decision. after months of campaigning, the transportation agency just decided to move it. some people say it is the tallest tree of its kind in the world. interesting. the california lottery has just released a list of lucky retailers to increase your chances maybe to win. a number of them are right here in the bay area. >> this is on the lottery website. you can see the shops that have sold a ticket of $100,000 or more. an average of 400 winning tickets a week or paid out more than $4,000 a week. that includes hannah's bottle shop in santa clara which sold six $500 tickets in the last three days. >> it's a very competitive

you're watching "today in the bay." okay we're going to talk 49ers this morning. it's the harbaugh preseason style. >> jim harbaugh and the niners play their first game against his brother, john and the ravens. we don't expect many of the stars like collin kaepernick to play many snaps. but it is a big day as the regular season inches that much closer. after the game, the 9ers will stay in baltimore over the weekend to share the practice field with the ravens. harbaugh brothers say this is a great opportunity to raise the level of intensity. because last time was not nearly intense enough. >> right. even though the preseason is just getting under way. we're already counting down the days to the regular season game at levi stadium. just 37 days to go. that the game against the chicago bears can be seen right here on nbc bay area on
