s from nbc bay area, this is "today in the bay." well good morning everyone, 4:30 i'm scott mcgrew. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. let's start out this monday morning with a live look outside, good morning, san jose, nice start to the day, but there is concern as the bay area could see lightning. let's check that forecast now with rob mayeda in for christina, good morning, rob. >> good morning, right now we have low clouds and drizzle out towards san francisco. on the coast, misty skies. at noon, then we have a watch for moisture that could kick off isolated thundershowers perhaps around the coastal hilltops later on today.

the fog on the coast and later on for the interior portions for the north bay, napa county can be down to the sow la know -- solano county. for the potential for dry lightning strikes at times. closer look in a few minutes. temperatures later on today in the 80s around san jose. upper 80s towards saratoga. you see the temperatures around santa rosa today. 78 degrees. upper 80s towards pleasanton and near 90 today. for one more near livermore. going back in time here, we've gone back to losing one of those eastbound lanes. far left hand lane there, we have two lanes open through 7:00 this morning, we'll keep you posted to see if there's any delays to getting that reopened. otherwise, east bay commute and tri-valley commute around concord and livermore. travel times early of course at 4:30 in the morning but on time

from grantline to 60. weather and traffic in a couple minutes, a back to you. overnight the obama administration announced it has started giving weapons directly to kurdish forces to fight against the terrorist group isis. previously they only insisted on selling to the iraqi government directly. air strikes could continue this week as the isis threat continues. >> every day that goes bay, isis becomes a direct threat to the united states of america. >> over the weekend, the u.s. dropped thousands of pounds to food and water to refugees stranded on a mountains. heavy bombings opened an escape route to let many down. president obama says no u.s. troops on the ground. the situation is evolving. you can stay with nbc both on

air and online for the latest developments. right now on our website, surprise speech by the prime minister is sparking debate in the region. it is 4:33, san jose police are investigating the death of three people over the weekend. yesterday the bodies of two women were found in a room at the easy 8 mole to on -- motel on east street. the bodies have been been there for tefrl days. the women checked in on wednesday and housekeepers said a do not disturb sign was hanging since then. investigators are not sure but they tell nbc bay area, they do not believe the public is in danger. >> i'm just really concerned like if there's probably something going on we may not know about. there's not enough information being passed around to the families out there. >> the third death this weekend took place in the valley. on saturday, man was stabbed to death by his stepson.

police say the young man's mother was also hurt in the knife attack. san jose begins a new campaign to clear out that city's largest homeless encampment. workers will be focussed on the eastern bank of the coyote creek known as the jungle. here you see protesters protesting that idea. the plan is to build a fence around the camp. something the city says will help cut back on illegal dumps. protesters here say a fence will prevent them from getting necessary meals and services to people who need it most. >> this is a back handled way of doing -- back handed way of putting a fence around here, people have no way to have access to this area and they cannot feed the people down below. at the same time, the people down below are forced to go elsewhere to get fed. >> the city will provide access to all programs that works with its homeless response team. this morning the man accused of impersonating a police officer and kidnapping two people will be back in court.

jeffrey buga and another man went to the bar in san francisco in 2008 and told two men they were under arrest. then they say buga took the men to his house, tried to sexual assault them and said he would deport them. the man was too afraid to report it until this year. the homeless whom who snuck into a flight to san jose will be back in court today. she's still in police custody in los angeles. she was arrested last week for sneaking on to a southwest airlines flight from san jose. days later, she was arrested, again, when she returned to lax against a judge's order. homelessness and mental illness have led her to keep trying to board flights. she had at least seven encounters with police at sfo. fire crews in vallejo are trying to figure out what sparked these flames at an

abandoned building. started after 7:00 last night. now after trying to fight the fire, the fire department eventually just let it burn itself out. ironically, firefighters say the building was once used by the fire department for fire training. recently a number of homeless people were living inside. happening now, massive wild burning. even as lightning threats to set them back. the lodge fire burned nearly 9,000 acres since it was started by a lightning strike last week. eight firefighters were hurt friday when flames suddenly shifted. three of the eight are from the south bay. they were released from the hospital saturday. right now the fire only 35% contained, six communities were evacuated, dozens of homes are on the fire line. lightning is also in our microclimate forecast this morning as we take a live look at san francisco and a look at the drive through san jose this morning. dry conditions out there that could be dangerous. let's check in with rob right now, with a look at the

forecast. >> forecast does have a red flak fire warning up for lightning danger across the sierra towards the cascades around mt. shasta into parts of the north bay. in the bay area, we have a fire weather watch due to a slight chance later today of seeing lightning strikes coming up. we'll look at that in a moment. right now mostly 60s outside. we have foggy skies around san francisco and on the coast, not going to see much in the way of any fire danger. notice in the hilltops towards the sierra and into the north bay at times tonight, there is a slight chance of thunder. area of low pressure chpz just offshore, scoops up more moisture out of the south. this is the pattern we're seeing today. that'll be the slight chance we'll see for the bay area to see the chance of the thundershowers as this thing moves on then tomorrow, cooling as the sea breeze turns stronger. you notice the changes there, seven day forecast trending cooler to tuesday. 83 degrees in san jose. temperatures around the peninsula in the mid-70s.

closer to 80 in palo alto into the north bay we'll see highs in the upper 70s and pleasanton and livermore highs in the upper 80s. cooling into the low to mid-80s tomorrow with that stronger sea breeze. reminder through 7:00 this morning, the one lane of the eastbound lane is still closed until about 7:00 a.m. plan accordingly like the old version of the tunnel at work this morning. northbound 680 at king road, accident on the right hand shoulder could cause a few delays. and your east bay travel times and commute right now, still looking good, but slowing now heading into livermore westbound typical slowing as you get to see this time of morning. and there is a view of 580 through dublin, arriving on schedule as we like to say, sometimes this time of morning. 101 at 280, right now the golden gate bridge commute, lane configuration there. no problems out of the north bay into san francisco right now and

opening. 14 months could not have passed bisooner for many people. before drivers were taking mission boulevard. one person incredibly happy about today's complete reopening is the owner of a local restaurant, the steak house here in fremont. he says the closure has really hurt his business. especially during lunch, driving the crowd of what used to be 200 to more like 20. >> great it's open now because so much of my business comes from that side of the freeway. >> reporter: this is part of the bart-silicon valley project set to construct a 16 pliel extension from bart down to santa clara. the warm springs bart station is slated to open at the end of next year in north san jose station set for the end of 2017. a lot of progress going along for this progress. welcomed sight here with warren back open this morning. live in south fremont, stephanie chuang, "today in the bay."

looted. 32 people were arrested. it broke out during a vigil for an 18-year-old african american teen shot and killed saturday during a struggle with an officer. two officers were hurt, at least one person was burned. we'll have a live report on the story coming up a little later at 5:00. new cease-fire between israel and hamas held overnight while both sides try to end the violence. israeli tanks and tanks remain at the border. no records of new -- reports of new violence. they can leave their homes and shelters. high school students took the opportunity to pick up their high school diplomas. it took effect just after midnight in gaza and proceeded by heavy rocket fire towards israel. now officials say they hope to have a deal within 72 hours. well a silicon valley giant taking new steps this morning to protect your e-mail. yahoo joined forces with google to provide yahoo mail users with end to end inkrepgs -- encrypted

it was the best day for the dow in five months. there's no economic data out today, we get reports this week on retail sales, inflation, and sentiment as well as earning walmart. dow jumping 185. a judge has denied gm's motion tos did miss a wrongful death suit -- dismiss a wrongful death suit. they settled with gm last year. the case exposed how the company allowed millions of cars to stay on the road after discovering the flawed switches were linked to at least 13 deaths. they filed a new complaint in may and trial is set for 2016. in other news, shoppers haven't taken to smart phone apps to pay for purchases, mobile payment companies are turning to restaurants. reports say priceline's open table units will announce today's expanding a restaurant app nationwide after testing it in san francisco. customers enter credit card info before they dine out and can then pay the bill and leave a

tip using the app. the beauty of technology. >> makes sense, thank you much. the moon shining brighter and larger this morning. that has everyone looking up. the year's largest supermoon is lighting up the sky right now. now according to estimates, the moon is 14% larger, 30% brighter than it was at its furthest point. it occurs when the full moon tracks close toast earth. some believe it's hard to see a difference with just the naked eye during the events, but moon watchers say it was spectacular. >> it's amazing, especially if you look at that shining, then you see the moon in there. it's the perfect picture. >> the next supermoon will fall on september 9th. >> now i noticed it because saturday night, it was like it was daylight out, it was fantastic. >> big and bright, i saw a shooting star this morning. >> hey, cool. you know, we got the meteor sure, because of that super

moon, laura was lucky to see one of the meteor showers there because we have so much light in the sky. there's the view right now in san jose. gorgeous, but you're missing out if you're in san francisco right now. you have the low clouds and fog, misty skies down the coast in the half-moon bay in santa cruz. notice the south bay seeing partly cloudy skies for the morning, low clouds and drizzle. that's typical on the coast, but what will be unusual as we pass lunchtime is watching moisture coming away from the sierra that could spark some lightning, especially for parts of the north bay coastal hilltops a little bit later on this afternoon. i noticed in the future cast here, next 24 hours. low clouds around the coast and powerful thundershowers around the sierra. now some may drift further to the west right now, as long as this area of low pressure which has been spinning offshore throughout the weekend is in where it is right now just off to the west. there is that potential, but that should end during the morning hours tomorrow. this low is going to cross inland tomorrow and that'll take the chances of lightning and

thunder with it, at least way from the -- away from the bay area and transport to a clear pat faern to tuesday as the sea breeze turns stronger. as we head into tuesday and wednesday. sop highs today, probably the warmest you'll see, areas south of san jose. 83 in san jose. san francisco about 65 degrees and the cooling that we'll see relatively speaking will be a couple degrees of cooling tomorrow. then the temperatures beginning to rewound for the second half of the weekend into the north bay today. near 80 in napa, santa rosa, north later today out towards lake port. might see a stray shower or two. you'll see there for the tri-valley today, highs in the upper 80s to near 90 and a warm-up on the way as we pass the middle part of the week and approach next weekend, back to you. happening right now, help on the way for three people aboard a sailboat that got caught in the hurricane julio. sailers called for help yesterday morning. the bolt was flooded 400 miles

northeast of the island. winds reached up to 115 miles an hour. 30 foot waves. here the affects of the hurricane. the coast guard says the ships shump pumps not able to deep up with the flooding. it is expected to weaken as it continues to move north today. forecasters predict there'll be nothing more than a high surf advisory for hawaii. tropical storm iselle left its mark on hawaii. a normally calm river on the big island turned into raging waters after the storm dumped more than 11 inches of rain. the storm toppled trees and power lines as it pounded the island friday. utility crews have been working to clear roadways of debris and restore power. hundred was people spent the night in hurricane shelters. fortunately, no reports of injuries. it's the second tropical storm on record to hit the big island of hawaii. this morning bay area animal shelter is bracing for what could be a rush of turtle adoption after the success of a
