the group isis. the u.s. previously insisted on only selling to the iraqi government directly. ire strikes -- air strikes could continue this week as the isis threat continues. president obama still promising know u.s. troops on the ground. developing story out of st. louis where rye yots erupted in the -- riots erupted following an officer-involved shooting that left an unarmed teenager dead. this morning, dozens of people are behind bars and dozens of stores damaged. "today in the bay's" bob redell joins us right now with some pretty amazing pictures from overnight. >> reporter: good morning to you, laura, last night people in furgson, missouri, were gathering for a peaceful ceremony to remember michael brown who was shot and killed by police. as you can see in the video right there. that night became very violent. you're looking at the quick time convenience store which was looted and destroyed. someone set it on fire. a mob of people broke in and

stole goods from the shelves, dozens of police officers from st. louis and surrounding areas rushed to the scene to try to contain the crowd. meantime the st. louis county prosecuting attorney is looking into whether or not saturday's shooting was justified. according to the to police, michael brown, the 18-year-old who was dilled and another person got into a scuffle with a ferguson police officer. he shot brown several times, turns out brown was unarmed. his mother says her son was a good kid who was visiting his grandmother at the time he was shot. was supposed to be starting technical school today. >> he don't bother nobody. >> he was a good kid, he was a cool kid. he was always quiet. >> reporter: police have not yet identified the officer who shot brown. they will only they salesperson on paid administrative leave. we did receive new numbers overnight from law enforcement about the number of arrests, the number of stores that were

destroyed. we'll have that for you coming up within the hour. >> thank you very much, bob. two motorcyclists killed trying to escape gunfire in san francisco. now police searching for the person who pulled the trigger. >> the shooting happened yesterday evening on hilltop park off la salle avenue. the victims were riding motorcycles when someone shot at them. they tried to get away on their bikes, but crashed. both were hurt in the crash. one shot. they both died at the hospital. fire crews in vallejo are trying to figure out what sparked these massive flames at an abandoned building. the fire broke out just after 7:00 last night. at first, crews struggled to douse the flames with water. they eventually decided to let the fire burn itself out. rather than use water from the bay area's dwindling supply. now firefighters say the two story building was an old structure they used for fire department training, but homeless people often lived in. morning commute about to get easier. after a nearly a year, warren

avenue in fremont will reopen. commuters can use it as an alternative to mission boulevard to get between 880 and 680. stephanie chuang live delight on warren avenue this morning. steph, strask now out there and people are using it, right? >> reporter: that's right, we have little traffic right now. very popular kind of side road to bipass the nasty gridlock that builds on mission boulevard. you can see the cones there on your screen, valley transportation authority, how they get the opening of one lane in each direction here over the weekend. but today, we'll all be finally open. for 14 months, drivers have had to rely on just mission boulevard which was also passed with vehicles and brake lights. a lot of gridlock trying to get between 680 and 880. crews have been building the bart exthaengs will connect south fremont to santa clara. the closure led to traffic

nightmare which the may i don't ever fremont has had to deal with himself. >> i go about ten times further than i used to. warren cuts it off. >> the traffic has been unreal. i mean mission boulevard here is like a parking lot with a go slow sign. >> reporter: so great news for drivers. now for everyone wanting to hop on to a fremont to south bay train. progress means instead of 2018 the extension set opening by late 2017 is still on track. the city of fremont subpoena paying for part of the project. that's supposed to enhance safety, not just drivers, but bicyclists and pedestrians who can avoid the train. construction which includes white and mission bld is set to finish next spring, and speaking of that construction, back here live, you can see there are some crews out and about here another warren and catto the work not

done here. the warm springs bart station is set to open at the end of next year. again very good progress. now coming up in about 45 minutes for my next live report. you might not think this closure impacted business too much, but it actually did quite a bit. you can hear just how much coming up next. live in south fremont, stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." >> thank you, stephanie. it's 6:06, san mateo officials will do another round of mosquito spraying in menlo park after a couple of the bugs were found infected with a west nile virus. here's a look at the area that will be targeted. spray willing start tonight and last until tomorrow morning. truck will be going around the area spray pg insecticide -- spraying insecticide close to where the infected insects were found. they hope the spray willing prevent the human cases of the virus. moon was shining brighter and bigger overnight, isn't that pretty? year's largest supermoonlit-up the night's sky.

30% brighter, super moons occur when it tracks closer to the earth. it's hard to see a difference with the naked eye, but moon watchers thought it was all spectacular. >> it's amazing, especially if you look at thousand shines and the moon in there. it's a perfect picture. >> the next soup moon will fall -- super moon will fall on september 9th. the sunrises this morning, let's check the forecast as we take a live look at downtown san jose this morning. >> san jose is not too bad this morning. fog causing issues around san francisco and the coast. not much viewing of that super moon overnight which is setting just after 7:00 this morning off to the west. and you see san jose out of the low cloud cover. we'll see clearing around san

jose as the temperatures have been generally in the upper 50s to low 60s this morning. actually 52 in napa. that's chilly for an august morning. clearer skies around the north bay. we saw temperatures drop off even more. watch out for red flag warning as we head towards the afternoon. this is because of moisture which is unfortunately kicking off more thundershowers that are dropping more lightning and perhaps not enough rain to start to put out some of the spot fires caused by potential lightning strikes during date. we have a fire weather watch actually up for solano county, up towards lake county for the afternoon as this area of low pressure which is pulling that moisture in from the south lifts inland tonight. we will see a transition to a cooler and breezier day for tomorrow as the sea breeze turns stronger. mid-70s around foster city and the north day, temperatures in

the 70s around santa rosa. 234e8 pleasanton. through the second half of the week, the temperatures will cool off a little bit through wednesday. and then thursday and friday. the temperatures rebound closer to the 90s, again today, a slight chance tonight. areas north of santa rosa might see a late day thundershower off in the northern end of sonoma county as we go through later tonight into early tomorrow morning. the problems in the south bay. 680 southbound. that was an earlier accident. that has been cleared, but you see perhaps a little bit of slowing there. northbound 87 at taylor, we had a lane blocked, that has been cleared up, also cleared now, the 580 accident at hoppier, do you see the slowing stacking up there? it has been cleared from the number two lane. but we're seeing residual slowing. now down to 31 miles per hour. and 84 commute from livermore down to 680. down to 28 miles per hour and other commutes from the delta to the diablo valley. running a little bit slower. there's a view of 580 in dublin.

you're watching "today in the bay." and good morning, gorgeous view of a setting supermoon as seen across parts of the south bay this morning. that's clear skies in the south bay, but fog could be an issue in other parts of the morning commute. we'll look at that in a moment. what is an issue, 580 westbound at javier. the traffic volumes increase, residual slowing behind the accident. new cease-fire between israel and hamas held overnight while both sides try to end the violence. the temporary cease-fire took affect after midnight in gaza. it was proceeded by heavy rocket fire towards israel. israelis just showed up in cairo. officials hope have a deal within 72 hours. riots erupted in the streets of st. louis. it broke out during a

individualle for an 18-year-old african american teenager who was shot and killed saturday during a struggle with an officer. investigator rs still trying to figure out why a young san jose man stabbed his own stepfather in the valley. stabbing happened over the weekend. sources say it started as a family fight. it's a homeless camp so large it's known as the jungle. today the first step is to clear it all out. >> it's a controversial project because of a plan to install a fence on the eastern bank of coyote creek. that's where kris sanchez joins us live. some say the fence is a barrier for people who want to help the homeless. >> reporter: yeah, you can see the fence here behind me. they're going to install a similar one as one of the other entry points known as the jungle. between that and the clean up that is planned for this week.

the city says clean up along the banks of the creek is opposite of the homeless encampment and not meant to force folks out of their makeshift homes, but still, the homeless advocates say any action down there, even if it's on the unpopulated side interferes with services. last month san jose arrested six people who had outstanding warrants, but there are an estimated 200 more who call the jukle home and homeless advocates say they will have nowhere to go. even if this city is cleaning up the unpopulated side, it'll make it hard to deliver services and the sfens not going to help. >> this is a back handed way of putting a fence around here so people have no access to this area. then they cannot feed the people down lowe. at the same time, the people down below can't get fed. they're forced to go elsewhere to get fed. >> reporter: now city officials did respond saying they will

continue to provide access sesz to all organizations working with the city's homelessness response team. again there has been part of a fence around much of the area surrounding the jungle, but there's going to be an addition fence along with large bolders. city wants to prevent illegal dumping, but again, homeless advocates say this is going to be a deterrent for folks who are looking for services. coming up in the next half hour, we'll talk about the notice that the city put out to those residents of the jungle saying they have to be out with all of their belongings by 7:00. what happens with their belongings? we'll tell you about that coming up in a half hour. in san jose, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> thank you, kris. well let's check your forecast. live look at the golden gate bridge this morning. that's nice and pretty picture. very few cloud. >> not driving through any misty skies right now. we are seeing other changes later on this afternoon that may include a slight chance of seeing lightning in parts of the

coastal ill hilltops later on right now. we have some low clouds around san francisco, but away from the ground, marine layer is up close to 2500 feet this morning. so it's nol really squished down to ground level right now. we're seeing 50s to low 60s outside, but you notice there, the north bay, 53 degrees. so kind of a chilly start. less clouds for you this morning has helped to allow the temperatures to cool off overnight. we're starting off the morning, at least through tomorrow, the red flag warning for the west slope. northern mountains for the chance of seeing more lightning flights. moisture moving up from south to north across the mountains around mt. shasta. you see more coming up through yosemite. wrapping up through the central sierra. some may try to drift further to the west later on today. right now coast tallow clouds then during the afternoon, upper level low which has been sitting offshore begins to approach the coast temporarily. you might see some of the moisture try to keep westward

back to the bay area around the sount clock wise rotation. tomorrow, the low lifts inland, scooped up by a trough of low pressure. this is going to promote stronger northwest wind which should mean cooler temperatures temporarily tuesday and wednesday until the ridge builds back ant temperatures rebound again for the second half of the week, changes you see at the bottom of the screen, seven day forecast warmer approaching next weekend. 83 degrees today in san jose. 87 in saratoga. palo alto, 81 degrees for the north bay temperatures in the 70s. close to 80 in napa and for pleasanton, 88 degrees and livermore near 90. temperatures cooling through wednesday. and then the north bay temperatures start to warm up also.

580 commute, that slows things down. that was westbound, and you can see the things turning into the orange here as our travel times begin to slow down on your tri-valley commute heading westbound to 680 now down to 25 miles per hour and similar from livermore connecting on highway 84 down to the sunol area there on 680. there's a view this morning. traffic coming towards you. slowed traffic there down to 29 miles per hour on average around the tri-valley. this morning, 101 and mckey, previous accident there. nob has been pushed off to the shoulder. so traffic resuming on time and on schedule there. metering lights on at the bay bridge. looking towards the toll plaza, that is also causing slowing this morning. and if you notice, if you're heading from the toll plaza out to sfo this morning, now down to 27 minutes with the toll lights turned on at the bay bridge. finally mass transit still a good alternate this morning, everything running on schedule,

happening now, thousands of firefighters standing their ground against a massive wild fire burning in the county. even as lightning threat tons set them back. the fire burned nearly 5,000 acres since being started by lightning last week.

eight firefighters hurt friday. three of those eight from are from the south bay released from the hospital saturday. right now the fire only 35% contained. six communities have been evacuated, dozens of homes are in the line of fire. help has just arrived for three people aboard a sailboat that got caught in hurricane julio. their boat flooded 400 miles northeast of hawaii. wind reached up to 115 miles per hour with 30 foot waves. the coast guard says the ship's pumps were not able to keep up with all the flooding. the hurricane is expected to weaken as it continues to move north today. forecasters predict there will be nothing more than a high surf advisory. well investigators think maybe a bird was sucked into the engine of a jet blue plane as it was about to take off causing that engine to catch fire. it happened at an airport in san juan, puerto rico, over the weekend. plane headed to new york city

with 192 people on board just seconds before the plane's wheel left the runway, flames and smoke poured from the engine. >> people in the cabin began to scream that the smoke was coming into the cabin and somebody said that the flames were coming in as well. at that point, everybody began to panic. people got out of their seats, started screaming. women started crying. >> the plane eventually stopped, pass jers and crew had to slide down the morning choouts and on to the tarmac. three children treated for minor injuries. it's unclear how they were hurt. passengers made it to jfk on another jet blue plane. firefighters in the las vegas faced an unusual situation over the weekend. they were just forced to watch a house burn because ammunition made it too dangerous to fight the flame. when fires crews arrived, they heard ammunition inside the

garage. once they felt it was no long aerodanger, they fought the flame. fortunately there was no one home at the time. and look at this the, ride dozens of thrill seekers not expecting this thrill. 24 people stranded for several hours. 50 feet in the air. this happened at six flags america in maryland. you can see rescuers climbing up on to the tracks to get the people out one by one. nobody hurt. now what caused this ride to malfunction, still under investigation. 6:27, still ahead, sending texts to 911. why something so simple is taking so long to take hold.

"today in the bay's" richard jordan live on capitol hill with the latest, good morning, richard. >> reporter: good morning, this morning we are learning of a new effort in effort, the cia will now be supplying weapons to the kurds on the ground taking on these isis militants there in

iraq. this is another indication that u.s. officials are increasingly concerned about the threat these isis militants play here not only in iraq, but also to other countries around the world. we have seen some precautions being already taken by american officials. they have taken the personnel that was at the consulate in irbil, relocated them. the obama administration is working on developing a game plan to get the iraqi, rather the iraqi christians off from a mountain where they have been stranded and surrounded for several weeks by the militants threatening to kill the christians if they don't convert to islam. then there is growing political pressure in iraq against prime minister al maliki. he went on tv late last night. this is the first time he's made public speeches since the air strikes started last week. he plans to keep his post. there have been calls for him to resign. earlier this morning, john kerry

says that maliki is stirring the waters, basically conflicting efforts there and keeping isis militants and keeping that campaign going. that rebel campaign going on the ground. there are calls for maliki to step down. he says he will not do that. he plans to seek a third term as prime minister and we're learning this morning this morning that iraqi's president is slapping him in the face. he promised a new government with new leaders in 30 days. that's the announcement that the came down this morning. we'll have to see how that plays out, laura. >> so much going on, richard, thank you very much. 6:32, let's check your forecast, live look at san jose and let's check the forecast. meteorologist rob mayeda who's in for christina, good morning. >> sunny skies there in san jose, other parts waking up to areas of low clouds and mist for parts of the coast right now. 62 degrees in san francisco. 59 in san jose under partly cloudy skies. things seem calm now, already

this morning, we have a red flag warning up for the west slope of the sierra and also the southern half of the cascades down to mt. shasta this morning. this is for the peeshl for lightning strikes today. we've will some overnight into this morning as the moisture rotates around an area of low pressure which has been sitting offshore the last couple of days, and as it crosses later on this morning into this evening. there's a slight chance the activity may drop into the some of the north bay hilltops, or perhaps out towards the delta. sop a fire weather watch for that chance of lightning is up for those inland locations. up toward lake can be the for the afternoon. as the system goes on by what we're going to notice is a stronger sea breeze and temperatures will be trending cooler come tomorrow and wednesday. today near san jose, 83 degrees, upper 80s around morgan hills, saratoga, and campbell. san francisco about 65 degrees. foster city 76. and 78 in santa rosa, and oakland, 72. pleasanton 88. north bay locations, slight rask

risk of isolated thundershower to the north of napa county. north bay and tri-valley seeing the temperatures climb. approaching next weekend. livermore and the tri-valley getting into the low 90s. now speaking of the tri-valley, not so good and here, 580 westbound slowing, but unusual slowing here, 680 southbound right past stone ridge down towards sunol, you're seeing early morning slowing. 84 not much better heading out of the livermore. we had an earlier accident at westbound 580 which did slow things down. the travel times from grantline road to 680, 30 miles per hour, also from livermore down towards the road. 31 miles per hour there and from vargas road, 43 miles per hour. so the slowing continues westbound on 580 this morning from the altamont pass. we will did an accident earlier, slow traffic northbound. that was cleared off to the side, but those traffic volumes beginning to pick up this morning. metering lights are back on at the toll plaza. we should point out here at

starting this fall, yahoo mail users will be able to send e-mail to other yahoo mail users, also g mail users as well. the messages will look like none sense to anybody but the ender and the recipient. google would announce it'll begin dhoing as well. fcc wants people an norge send a text message to 911 instead of having to call. the commission is set to discuss a proposal requiring text provide offer the service by the end of the year. a few states like vermont have that technology because their emergency services are centralized. it takes a lot more coordination and space like california where cities and counties handle their own emergency services. in fact, only 2% of the country's emergency centers currently have the technology to receive those messages. well this is cool. open table is going to announce its expanding its restaurant app nationwide after testing in san francisco. they're doing about 20 san

you're watching "today in the bay." and welcome back to you and happy monday. it is a clear day this morning above the golden gate bridge. traffic looks reasonable. it's going that great monday. 6:40. this morning, three children are hurt in a drive by shooting in new orleans and 18-year-old woman and man are dead. police say they were all in front of the house when men inside a car drove up and started shooting. a two-year-old and four-year-old are in critical condition. 13-year-old is listed as stable. it happenedless than -- happened less than five miles from the french quarter. the area was devastated by hurricane katrina in 2005. zblonchts charges have been filed against the nascar driver who hit and killed another racer

this morning, as the deadline for folks to clear out with their belongings so that the city can do their clean up along the coyote creek. there is a plan to install part of a fence that you can see here behind me. it's going to be extended with boulders. homeless advocates say it'll create a barrier. however, the clean up is on the opposite side of the homeless encampment to say any action down there interferes with services. just last month, san jose police swept through the encampment arresting six people with outstanding warrants. there are an estimated 600 people who say that if this clean up happens, they will nowhere to go. but with that many people and no services like water or sewage, there have been problems with human waste and fires started by campfires or cooking stoves. if the city is cleaning up the unpopulated side, it'll still make it harder to deliver

services to people who depend on them. >> this is a back handed way of doing a, accomplishing the same thing by putting a fence around here, the people have no way to have access to the area. then they cannot feed the people down below. at the same time, the people down below won't be able to come up and get fed. they're forced to go elsewhere to get fed. >> reporter: now the city officials responded saying that they will continue to provide access to all organizations working with the city's homelessness response team. now as i mentioned, the city did hand out written notices which they have to do by law to the folks who are living in that encampment. it says they have to be out by 7:00 with their belongings. on that same notice, it says that any belongings that remain will be collected by the city, they are legally required to store them for 90 days unless they pose a hazard. folks can reclaim their belongings, but after that, they will be destroyed. . may not be much top you and i who are fortune enough to have a home, but for a lot of these
