from nbc bay area, this is "today in the bay." >> well, good morning, happy wednesday. 4:30. i'm scott mcgrew. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. in just a couple of hours, students will head back to classes, several bay area schools. the district getting under way. san jose unified, antioch unified and south san francisco unifie unified. the first day of classes at a couple of private schools. >> speaking of san jose, let's peek out the window, take a look. looks like a good day for the first day of school. let's double-check with rob m

mayeda. >> temperatures climbing into the low 80s around san jose. around south san francisco, temperatures low 70s around antioch, one of the warmer spots we'll see today. that will be seeing temperatures climbing into the low to mid-80s around 3:00 today, mostly sunny, patches of low clouds for the morning. the rest of bay, 80 san jose. towards north bay, highs of upper 70s around san rafael, santa rosa. temperatures in pleasanton and livermore, close to mid-80s. commute starting off in the east bay, everything in the green for highway 4 and 580 westbound. coming through the tri-valley, drive times 66 miles per hour from grant line road from 680. camera views from 580, westbound traffic in dublin looking good. san mateo better than yesterday after the four-hour closure. final stop, golden gate bridge,

low cloud cover at tops of the tower but no fog, getting into the morning commute, down into san francisco. another look at weather and traffic coming up. hundreds of kids who fled violence in central america will start school in the bay area and oakland's board of education has to decide if it wants to hire a specialist to help them adjust to new schools. hundreds of childrens from guatemala, honduras enrolled in schools around the bay area, including oakland, since last summer. the unaccompanied minor specialists would help students, most whom don't speak english or have parents in the country, adjust to school and southern california. the san francisco unified school district plans to hire another two or three teachers this fall. more than 340 undocumented children signed up for school in oakland. it believes 150 are all by themselves. san francisco's trying to accommodate 200 new students who

just arrived from central america. 64 students tried to take classes at schools throughout contra costa county, 19 plan to attend school in mount diablo. since october more than 62,000 unaccompanied minors entered the country. california has taken in more than 3900 since january. that's the third largest group, after texas and new york. much more back-to-school coverage all morning long. if you're on social media, share your back-to-school routine. twitter nbcbay area and also on instagram. solemn tribute to who hollywood legends are lights the famed chinese theater dimmed in honor honor of lauren bacall and robin williams. this is the eighth time in nearly 90 years the theater has gone dark.

williams and, quote, cry laughing. he showed a clip of williams' first appearance on 1981 with johnny carson. fallon stood atop the desk to declare, oh captain, my captain, you will be missed. the giants and their fans stood together in silence to honor williams as well. williams was a giants fan for decades and cheered on the team at at&t park and candlestick park. in addition to moment of silence, giants played a video tribute and displayed messages from fans. at the park, williams famous for bringing the crowd to its feet before game one of the 2010 playoffs. turned out to be a good luck charm, as giants ended up winning the world series. fans say it was an unforgettable moment. >> came out screaming and shouting, got the vibe going, brought a lot of laughter into our lives and people's lives that were more sad than his. god bless him. >> last night's tribute came on

gary garcia night. the family was saddened by his death but happy to share the night with another beloved talent from marin. the coroner says it could be several weeks before we find out if williams had drugs or alcohol in his system when he died. yesterday we learned more about his final hours. the coroner says williams' assistant knocked on his door monday around nooning, when he didn't answer she went in. she found williams hanged himself and immediately called 911. >> the caller was distraught and indicated at that time that it was an apparent suicide due to hanging had taken place. >> the core rooner says williams seeking treatment for depression. a co-star, a little girl from san jose, played a small but memorable role in "patch adams," cameron stanley was battling cancer when cast to

play the role of a cancer survivor in the film. the 6-year-old was supposed to be extra but williams wanted her in a solo scene. williams treated her like family and she left filming with a lot of fond memories and photos. like so many, stunned to hear of williams' death. >> it was hard because he was -- he was so full of life and everyone around him loves him. >> she did acting after "patch adam" but focused on working for the make-a-wish foundation. hollywood, as you said, not only mourning williams' death but the passing of lauren bacall, died yesterday at age 89. bacall, tony-award winning actress, national book award winning author, friend of the kennedys and one of last survivors of hollywood's studio age. >> you know how to whistle, don't you, steve? you just put your lips together

and blow. >> who doesn't know that? in to have and have not that young husky voice bacall delivered one of the most memorable lines to humphrey bogart. their marriage led to three more collaborations, before bogart's death. bacall said in a recent interview, their lives will always be intertwined. >> they just lit up the screen together and fell in love on camera. they fell in live while making the movie. and audiences responded tremendously to this. >> last night fans flocked to they are star on the walk of fame, many left flowers and notes. earned a tony in '71 for sftage work, later nominated for "mirror has two faces" in supporting role. nbcbayarea.com, go to home page, find out more about their lives and careers and how fans are remembering their legacies.

watching. also developing now in the middle east, just hours after 130 american military advisers arrived in iraq, france sayed it will send arms to kurdish forces battling isis militants. officials say americans who just got to the country are there to help, not to fight. >> as the president made very clear, we're not going back into iraq in any of the same combat mission dimensions that we once were in in iraq. >> the team includings marine ands special ops forces, as isis militants threat tonight kill 30,000 iraqis refusing to convert to islam. today getting a job in san francisco may get easier for some. the latest ban the box measure will stop most private employers from asking about a person's criminal history on a job

application. employers will be allowed to do background checks after the interview. the law applies to businesses with more than 20 employees. california adopted a similar policy for state employees earlier this year. say good-bye to hidden cash for now. jason buzi announced on twitter, he'll no longer make hidden cash drops. he realized only way to keep the hunts going with sponsors. he says he was approached by several big names but after a lot of thought, he decided to cancel, saying, turning hidden cash into an advertising business was not his goal or mission. he hopes to do more fun things for people in the future. well, meet the botler, a tiny robotic butler. part of a pilot program launched next week in cupertino. the general manager says the robot will not replace employees but help them by making deliveries to guest rooms,

nasdaq down 12. >> thank you much. time to check the forecast with meteorologist rob mayeda in for christina. >> seeing temperatures in the 50s and 60s outside on your wednesday morning with low clouds inland to concord and livermore, too. it's 59 right now. 64 san jose. 61 san francisco. a closer look where clouds are, into the -- over the dublin grade, into the valley. san jose overcast skies, low clouds down to santa cruz. low clouds around the bay area but rain-producing clouds across california. good news that could toss rain on fires burning near the california/oregon border and reinforce the relatively mild pattern we're seeing play out yesterday and again for today. with low clouds on the coast, showers to the north as we head toward the afternoon. tomorrow and friday, see changes, high pressure starts to build in. take the marine layer close to

does bring a strong ridge of high pressure. we could see heat, not for this weekend but towards beginning of next week, watching that closely for you, mid 90s and upper 90s in range about let's say 8 to 10 days from now. something to look forward to perhaps middle part of next week. >> long-range forecasting. 4:50 right now. five football players are free on bail, accused of taking part in an armed robbery at a frat house. students who live in san luis obispo are shaken up over what happened saturday. a 19-year-old barged into the house and pointed a gun at them. the victims tried to keep calm before deciding to fight back. >> tackled them down the stairs, actually blood right there. yeah, all of the cops came, doug piled on him. >> four other suspects were in a getaway car. police say all suspects are football players, some with scholarships. the motive could have been drugs or money, but nothing was taken

from the frat house. another brazen home invasion robbery, what's thought of as a safe section of san jose, this time a 13-year-old girl home at the time. she locked herself into the bathroom, hid in the bathtub, called her dad. >> hearing him going through drawers and stuff. >> the girl said she got into the bathtub because she didn't want the thieves to see her feet in the cracks between the door and the floor. the girl's dad, of course, called 911. she waited in the bathtub until they arrived. police dispatched at least ten police cars and caught all three suspects. >> for me, it was amazing. i told her, the same day, i was really proud of what she did. the way she handled herself. >> now we're not showing their faces because the family would like to protect their safety. this happened in the blossom hill neighborhood of san jose, an area thought to be rather safe. >> brave, young lady. still ahead, why scientists are turning to sharks in hopes of curing cancer. live to fremont.
