parts of northern california. a look at that interesting part of your forecast. now travel problems on the 850 commute towards tri-valley, dublin. a look at both weather and traffic in a couple minutes. let's take a live look outside bay bridge. wednesday, august 13th. this is "today in the bay." >> from nbc bay area, this is "today in the bay." good morning, everyone. thank you for joining us. i'm scott mcgrew. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. hundreds of bay area families getting up early this morning as they prepare for the first day of school. live look outside overlooking downtown san jose. students in san jose unified are among those returning to clasp classes resuming in antioch, south san francisco, and archbishop mitty and de la salle in concord. >> districts see an influx of central american refugees attending classes.

live in oakland, the district preparing for new additions to the student body and hundreds and hundreds of kids. >> reporter: yeah, at least hundreds are expected to attend bay area schools for the first time this school year oaklandland unified bracing for the influx considering highering privately funded consultants to deal with the minors. they would be the point person for the students having deal with new country, different language and trauma of fleeing violence in their homeland. board of education will be voting on whether to accept 45,000 from the foundation and 30,000 from the y&h foundation. 75,000 total to hire a quote/unquote, unaccompanied minor specialist to track down central american kids and monitor their adjustment. bret heart middle school, oakland international high school enrolled a large number

of students so any financial and staff help would be welcomed. >> the question for schools, how do we identify the needs of students in a quick manner so we can provide necessary resources. that comes with costs, depending when the children come, how long they stay that may impact the funding that we receive from the state. >> more than 30 3 40 undocumented children signed up in oakland. 150 are known to be unaccompanied minors. san francisco was trying to accommodate 200 new students, hiring two to three more teachers. 64 students signed up to take classes throughout contra costa county, while 19 plan to attend schools in mt. diablo. 62,000 unaccompanied minors enters the u.s. since october. 4,000 taken in by california. we've taken in the third largest

group behind texas and new york. nanette miranda for "today in the bay." as we mentioned, south san francisco unified starting school. many elementary schools returning with a focus on physical education. over the summer, the board discovered some schools were not meeting state standards, according to the san mateo daily journal. elementary school students must have 200 hour of p./e for every school days or 20 minutes a day. the district found 44% of schools meeting the requirement for all grade levels. district thinks the shift to implement common core, focus on math and language arts, allowed p/e to slip through the cracks. south bay returning to school. >> parents getting kids ready for clasp the district bracing for a very busy day. bob redell, the district bus

drivers starting to show up? >> reporter: they are. after few months off for the summer, this is their first day back as well. where you get the first sense that school is getting back into session. some of the drivers already showing up to get ready for runs starting shortly. so san jose unified, one district going back to school today, already mentioned south san francisco unified. antioch unified also going back. and some local high schools, archbishop mitty in san jose, carondelet and de la salle. san jose unified, serves 32,000 students roughly, 3,000 teachers and staff working at 42 schools located southbound here up north to downtown san jose. coming up, we will be speaking with the man in charge of all of those people in charge of the schools. talking about dr. vincent

matthews, the superintendent of the the san jose unified school district. we want to address common core standards, something they started implementing last year. in this year, something new for the high school students in the district, they only now need 220 credits to graduate, that's 20 fewer credits than the years prior. that will be an issue discussing with superintendent within the next hour. live here in san jose, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> rumble of the buses behind you. >> before we talk to rob, i want to point out, i said you need 200 hours of p/e every ten school days, that's too much. we'll find out what the actual number ipz the irony, concentrating too much on math. apparently not me. we'll figure that out. >> common core. >> in the meantime, let's check our weather. >> weather for p/e outside, nice. it can be hot around the bay

area. today comfortable. south san francisco, you don't expect heat there, 72 as we go through the afternoon. antioch, though, can get quite hot this tile of year. today mid-80s, not bad. we'll start to see temperatures climbing up, though, as we go towards the second half of the week. let's show you san jose right now. looking at close to 82 degrees as we go through the afternoon out of the san jose unified school district. schools around san jose, willow glen, temperatures approaching 80 around 2:00 today. leyland, temperatures warmer, mid-80s through the afternoon with mostly sunny skies today. temperatures light jacket should be fine as you send kids off to school. upper 50s to low 60s. a lot of low clouds out there. at least away from ground level, marine layer up. but the base of the low clouds closer to 800 feet up. to the north, if you're going head up to northern california and parts of redding or crescent

assistant knocked on his bedroom door monday around noon, and when he did not answer she went in. she found williams hanged himself and immediately called 911. the coroner says williams was seeking treatment for depression. stephanie chuang joins us. despite the sudden death and tragedy, williams remembered as a great actor and comedian by people all over the bay area. >> absolutely. his wife asked people to celebrate his life as opposed to mourning this great loss. he lived in marin county for years, took drama classes at college of marin, performed in the bay area, a regular at the throck morton. for the first time in ten years the theater canceled its tuesday comedy night, out of respect for williams. tributes continued into the hollywood walk of fame to a growing memorial at his tiburon house. jimmy fallon started with a tribute to williams, the host getting emotional and choked up

as he spoke of the legend. >> before we get into the show, we like all of you, shaken up last night. genius cheed yee comedian, acto williams passed away. unbelievable. if you ever saw this guy stand up -- if you don't know his stand up, just watch. amazing. >> very emotional there. honor how amazing williams was, rare moment for only its eighth time in 87 years, the famed chinese theater in hollywood dimmed its lights last night for one minute in tribute to the 63-year-old actor and comedian. the chinese theater where many of williams' filmed premiered, "mrs. doubtfire," scott, you know as well as i do, the reach around the bay area, including sports, williams huge fan of the giants. more on that coming up.

>> stephanie chuang, thank you much. hollywood is not only mournimour mourning williams' death but passing of lauren bacall, she died yesterday at age of 89. bacall tony-award winning actress, award-winning author, friend of the kennedys and one of the last survivors of hollywood's studio age. >> you know how to whistle, don't you, steve? you just put your lips together and blow. >> it was in "to have and have not" that a young, husky voiced bacall delivered one of the most memorable lines in history to humphrey bogart. a year later, they would marry. the marriage led to three more movie collaborations before his death. last night, fans flocked to his star on the walk of fame. bacall earned a tony in 1971 for her stage work and later nominated for a supporting role in "the mirror has two faces." new this morning, new lanes on highway 101 in santa clara

midmorning with misty skies, lunchtime, coastal low clouds, sunny breaks and for tomorrow, we'll see mild to breezy conditions. but tomorrow, we'll see a warm-up, high pressure tries to strengthen. the satellite radar, interesting here to the north. we have rain coming into eureka and crescent city. some showers can show up north of santa rosa, as the system continues to move through, it's going to keep the sea breeze going and marine layer close to 2500 feet thick, which that is ocean air-conditioning, keep us mostly mild temperatures for now, mid-80s inland, 60s, 70s around the coast and peninsula. but beginning tomorrow, we'll see temperatures climbing more degrees, 90s for parts of the tri-valley. today, near 80 san jose. upper 60s, closer to san francisco east bay. 72 oakland, 79 north bay for napa. pleasanton, livermore, climbing into the 80s for now. mid-80s around the tri-valley.

numbers climbing on up, friday into saturday, that's where we'll see highs approaching low 90s in the tri-valley and trending cooler towards sunday. closer look at your weekend temperatures. you'll see that close to 90 tri-valley, south bay locations great as kids take their first weekend off from the first week of classes. we'll see numbers comfortable, mid-80s in the forecast in the south bay this weekend. commute challenging this morning. incident northbound 101, on ramp to southbound 880 has since been cleared. issues towards tri-valley, grant line road. westbound center lane stall. you can see the backup behind that westbound 850 at grant line. the travel times from grant line towards 680 down to 50 miles per hour. slowing from livermore to 680 on 84. we'll see how the stacking up effect of the accident or problem in center lane affects the rest of the 580 commute

coming up in a few minutes. beginning of the school year brings growing concern about the safety of children who play school sports. a study found parents and copes are not doing enough to keep kids safe. former u.s. surgeon general attacher said kids need to play sports to fight obesity but parents should pay attention to dangers. in the study, 42% of players have hidden injury to keep playing, 54% said they've played injured and most kids said they've told a coach or parent they were hurt but kept playing. 33% of students surveyed said they've been hurt in a game as a result of a dirty play from opponent. 53% of coaches have been pressured by parents to put injured kids back in the game. in the meantime, the giants launching a fantasy football challenge to benefit local charities. >> giants pitcher tim hudson will host that event, part of huddy's huddle, the football

for school around the bay area. >> "today in the bay's" nanette miranda live in oakland, where more than 300 refugees set to take to classes this year. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the new students from central america will certainly need a lot of help. oakland, which is getting a large number, expected to vote tonight on whether to hire unaccompanied minor specialist. more than 340 undocumented students have signed up for school in oakland, at least 150 unaccompanied minors. san francisco trying to accommodate 250. 64 students signed up to take classes throughout contra costa county, while 19 plan to attend schools in mount diablo. children will need a lot of help dealing with a new country, different language, and trauma of fleeing violence in their homeland. the vote tonight by the board of education will on whether to

accept $75,000 in private foundation money for a point person. without it the money will have to come somewhere else. >> with a lack of federal and state funding, the worst-case scenario might be that schools would have to limit courses or course work or activities and shift teachers around. there may be an impact on how they deploy their personnel. >> reporter: in oakland, bret heart middle school, fremont high, oakland international high school have enrolled the most. california has taken in nearly 4,000 new students since january. that's the most out of any state behind texas and new york. live in oakland, nanette miranda for "today in the bay." in the south bay, getting close to the first ringing of the bell to start the new school year. the district is bracing for a big day. drivers are already there. >> reporter: yeah. you know, the world of education, you think that teachers and the students would be early risers but that's not the case here in the south bay. we've seen bus drivers arriving since before 5:00 this morning here to san jose unified school district. the bus barn here to test the buses, perform multipoint inspects and make sure that these vehicles are safe, ready to carry the precious cargo. >> exciting and nervous at the same time. >> reporter: how so? >> a lot of responsibility. you have to love what you're doing. that's my passion. kids. >> reporter: here's a list of the districts going back to school today. san jose unified, south san francisco unified, and antioch unified. in the following high schools,

instagram. the bay area homeless woman who stowed away on a flight out of san jose will be back in a los angeles courtroom today. marilyn hartman appeared in court monday, her attorney has requested doctors do a more detailed mental health exam. she was arrested last week for sneaking on to a southwest airlines flight from san jose to l.a. days later, arrested again when she returned to l.a.x. against a judge's order. the court-appointed attorney claims homelessness and mental illness led her to keep trying to get aboard planes. another home invasion robbery, in what's thought of a safe section, this time a 13-year-old girl home. she locked herself in the bathroom, hid in the tub, called her dad. >> going through drawers and stuff. >> the girl got into the bathtub because she didn't want thieves to see her feet in the crack between the door and the floor. the dad called 911. of course she waited in the bathtub. police dispatched at least ten

iraq. there is krits simple to obama's strategy here. peter king says the u.s. air strikes should be more widespread. right now the air strikes have been centered in erbil, where isis militants have a stronghold. but there are militants spread out throughout the country who believe the obama administration could cast a wider net. jack reid of rhode island says the issue is the political climate in iraq. a new president elected a few weeks ago, but the old administration, prime minister nuri al maliki, refusing to step aside. having trouble gaining control of the new government, the new president. that's one issue. also seeing international support, starting to step up. france agreed to send weapons to kurdish fighters taking on isis militants and australian's prime minister considering sending combat troops to iraq. >> contributions from many din countries.

it will take a couple of weeks before we learn whether robin williams had alcohol or drugs in his system when he died. williams' wife was the last person to see him alive sunday night, adding she said she thought he was still asleep in a separate bedroom when she left monday morning. later williams' assistant knocked on his bedroom door. within he did not answer, she went in, found him that he had hanged himself. williams was seeking treatment for depression. he's being remembered for his love of the bay area and comedic prowess. >> good morning. scott, last night, "the tonight show" host jimmy fallon paid tribute and got joked up as he described williams as a unique, one of kind, amazing, and encouraging people to watch youtube. williams' love of sports in the bay area, giants, williams kicked off the first game of the 2010 playoffs, a moment giants fans won't soon forget.

to the 63-year-old. the chinese theater is where many of his films premiered, includes "popeye," "good morning, vietnam" and "mrs. doubtfire." williams' depression, we heard from a psychologist who had an exchange with williams eight months ago, that's coming up. the death of robin williams has really hit home for a lot of people. more so than the death of any other celebrity. people -- person after person we talked to in san rafael told us how williams death brought on unique hurt. >> saying she was, you know, she didn't know why she was so affected by it but she felt like it was just a huge, profound loss and affecting her. >> came across as incredibly genuine person. you read about all of the things he's done. all of the ways he's reached out to other people he touched

mission boulevard between 680 and 880, traffic incident there has both directions unusually slow this morning. you can see how the freeway traffic is fine, it's bottle neck between two at mission boulevard between 680 and 880 this morning. as we show you 101, northbound san jose, starting to see volume slowing there. as it passes camera, traffic slows down more. 580 and dublin, traffic does slow down through livermore and stays roughly average speed of 40 miles per hour as you approach 680 and head to the south or north. bay bridge, volume picking up heading into the city but no incidents on that stretch of the bay bridge. drive times, the tri-valley, dropped down to 34 miles per hour from grant line road, 68 and lowing down 84 away from livermore. mass transit good alternative, b.a.r.t., muni, caltrain and vta on schedule. >> thank you. tonight a wake will be held for the race car driver hit and killed on the dirt track.
