from nbc bay area, this is "today in the bay." well good morning everyone, it is 4:30 on a thursday, i'm scott mcgrew. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. big welcome to school to the students returning to class this morning. it includes those in the jefferson union high school cricket, morgan hill unified, and students in st. francis high school. >> speaking of san jose, let's look outside this morning. it is going to be a great day, great day for a first or possibly second day of school. rob mayeda joins us with a look at your forecast. >> it looks good around daly city this morning. you have to look out for low

clouds and fog. temperatures in the upper 60s through the afternoon, in and around morgan hill, it's going to be warm up to 88 degrees. it'll be one of the hotter spots around the bay area. san jose, mid-80s at presentation high school as we go through about 3:00 today and final stop to mountain view at st. francis. heights today in the low 80s. that's a look at your back to school forecast. now speaking of back or back from hawaii, welcome back to mike inouye. >> thanks, rob. and you're talking about st. francis, thanks for doing double duty. and we're talking about st. francis, the other school. look at the maps, morgan hill as well. return shouldn't affect the freeways much, but i wanted to give a shoutout to the friend south of where we look throughout the freeways. all moving smoothly, typical overnight construction crews. we want to look live in the westbound direction approaching the toll plaza. we're too far west to see that,

but you see the good volume of traffic over towards the peninsula. low clouds floating around, we're going to track that through the morning, back to you. now to an update on a local story that's gotten national attention. publisher revising a sex ed book that parents say is too graphic and too inappropriate. >> last night parents once again voiced their concerns about the book which was supposed to be given out to ninth graders this year. they voted to buy the books in june, but there was huge back lash. more than 2200 people signed a petition saying it was explicit. sop included descriptions of sexual practices. many people agreed, but others stood up for the textbook. >> these are things i discuss with my future spouse a few months before we got married, not something high schoolers should be discussing. >> if you see popular movies, none of the content in the book

contains anything that our kids haven't already been exposed to. >> the district put the textbook on hold while the school, staff, and publisher work on a revision. classes sat the union high school district will get under way on monday, but we're hearing reports of students being turned away. >> one of the parents we talked to said he just brought home a, brought home, his family scheduled to move into it in two weeks but his kids cannot start going to school there until the family physically lives in the house. the children may have to start in san jose only to start again in the two weeks when they're living in their home. san francisco teachers are days away from picking up the chalk. first they'll have to vote on whether to go on strike. the vote is the result of negotiations that have not been led to a new contract. a strike 12 still a few days away though, depending on how today's vote goes, the teachers may have to take another vote

before hitting the picket line. teachers want a 21% raise over three years. district wants to give them an 8.5% raise. social media, share a picture with your back to school routine, we'd love to see it. use the #backtoschool. it is 4:34, developing now in the heart of the country. classes in ferguson, missouri, were canceled for the rest of the week in response to four straight nights of violent protests. >> everybody is angry about a lot of stuff. but we need to do it peacefully. >> we just asking people to be -- >> tear gas filled the air again last night in the small suburb of st. louis. hundreds of angry protesters refused to disperse and reportedly threw molotov cocktails. they are angry over the death of 18-year-old michael brown. the teen was unarmed when he was shot and killed after a confrontation with police last weekend. even though the violence has not stopped since then, protests and

police claim to want the same thing. missouri's kovrn is traveling to ferguson today to see the developing situation firsthand. we have new details this morning on a fire at the mall in cupertino. people inside started smelling smoke. by the time firefighters got there, they didn't see any flames, but they did see the lingering smoke in the air. because the mall's so big, firefighters called for back-up to help them figure out where the smoke was coming from. there was a fire in a freight elevator near the movie theater, but the flames were extinguished by the spinger will system. wolf road at interstate 280 was closed because there were so many fire trucks in the area. nobody was hurt. plus are scouring hours of surveillance video trying to find a glimpse of whoever beat a san francisco man to death. brian higgins found brutally beaten in the castro district over the weekend. he never recovered. at the exact time that higgins was taken off life support

yesterday, many who knew him joined hands in the park and paid tribute to his life. >> we're all in shock and a little bit freaked out by the whole situation. it seems like we don't have all the facts yet either. that somebody would hurt him seems just insane. >> higgins was a member of the radical ferries, movement of gay men searching for spiritual dimension into their salty. they do not know if this was a hate crime. at 4:36, for millions of fans, the shocking death of robin williams is still rocked. his loss was felt on broadway last night. it went dark as a salute. the lights were dimmed in his memories, though known for missouris and sand-up come dis, he starred in broadway comedies.

including with steve martin. now the daughter of robin williams is suspended her twitter and instagram accounts because of her hurtful messages. zelda williams posted her raw reactions on twitter when her dad passed away. thousands of people showed her support online. a couple sent a few hurtful messages instead. even tweeting photo shopped pictures of what they claim was her dad's body. >> this abuse doesn't aim to promote any particular value. >> twitter deactivated the counts with the negative messages came from. people should not be disheartened because they represent a small minority. also seen backlash against the police department. the coroner told the nbc bay area the department would have preferred to withhold information from tuesday's news

bay bridge, and golden gate you will find fog and misty skies. 50s and 60s outside. and the low clouds far inland out towards fairfield into the north bay, visibility at times around santa rosa down to a half mile and a few low clouds around san jose. similar trend we saw yesterday. low clouds and misty skies for the morning, then towards the afternoon, a little bit warmer than 24 hours ago, at least for the valleys today. highs making a run at the upper 80s to near 90s and the warmest spots around the bay area. san jose today near 83 degrees. temperatures around san francisco, upper 60s to near 70. for the north bay, highs in the low to mid-80s and upper 80s around pleasanton. that is an trend as we move ahead, numbers getting into the 90s tomorrow into the start of the weekend and turning label the cooler as you approach monday. so that fog could be slowing a few things down on the morning commute, with more, let's go over to mike. the south bay moves smoothly, let's look at the north bay, san rafael as part of

new details on the crisis in iraq. u.s. forces say the conditions of the country's refugees are better than first thought. about 20 u.s. military members assessed the situation in iraq and say those who are trapped on a mountain byist sit militants are doing better than initially thought and they say there are far fewer refugees than they thought. the white house considered air lifting refugees trapped, now u.s. officials say rescue operations areless likely and so are boots on on the ground. >> you are looking at ways to move on the mountain to a safer position. and that's exactly what our team is doing on the ground now in

iraq. >> while australia's the only country considering sending combat troops to the region, they sent weapons to kurdish fighters. despite briefly exchanging rocket fire across the border, israel and hamas say their truce is holding up. in cairo, both sides agreed to extend a cease-fire by five days. just minutes before the old one was set to expire. the truce will allow them to continue to negotiate end to the violence in gaza. hamas says important disagreements remain over the wording regarding security arrangement and reconstruction efforts for the gaza strip. bay area homeless woman who stowed away chose six month jail sentence. she appeared in an l.a. courtroom yesterday. she has a long history of sneakingen to bay area flights. last week snuck past security san jose and boarded a plane to l.a. without a ticket. she was arrested at lax, told to stay away from the airport.

airline. virgin america was created by richard branson, scott. >> we fly it often, thank you much. i want to check the forecast now with meteorologist rob mayeda, how are we looking today? >> more on the way of fog than we've seen in the last couple of mornings. especially across the golden gate bridge and the north bay. visibility at times down to a half mile. that could slow your commute. over the next few days, we will continue to see the areas of low clouds and fog pushed inland. high pressure will lead us to changing. they will include starting today a little bit of a warm-up and summer time spread we know and expect this time of year with the difference between the temperatures we'll see later on in san francisco. close to 69 degrees. compared to what we'll see in pleasanton by the afternoon getting up to about 88 degrees label the later on today. 83 degrees for san jose today, notice morgan hill, climbing up closer to 90 this afternoon. san francisco and the upper 60s as you saw, the peninsula generally in the mid-70s around foster city into the north bay you'll see highs in the 80s to

i want to show you the maps, traffic and weather maps were being handled by rob yesterday and today. we're following the road weather index. we have weather data on our traffic maps as well. that may be a factor anywhere north of san rafael bridge and up into navado. westbound 580, slowing cleared. the construction picked up in livermore, both directions. there's slowing into the altamont, two lanes past greenville and westbound just starting that little build as you're coming in out of the altamont pass. the rest of the bay looks nice. easy drive as you might expect. and as rob was talking about, the lower clouds clinging around the area. you see them hovering around the city. you can see the decks here or the san francisco side, however, from time to time, we've seen the tops of the towers. we're watching this as well as foster city, there's the high-rise coming off of 92 to peninsula. no delays in san mateo right
