afternoon climbing into the mid-80s to near 90 in parts of the south bay. a look at your forecast straight ahead. that fog will make the lights tougher to see on the commute. we see the lights backed up because the metering lights are on. update on the crash right near sfo, coming up. looking live outside, golden gate bridge, you can still make it out despite the fog for this thursday, august 14th, and this is "today in the bay." from nbc bay area, this is "today in the bay." and a very good morning to you, thanks for joining us, i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm scott mcgrew. overnight molotov cocktails answered with tear gas for the fourth straight night protester in the med west rage out of control sending the media running for their lives. this is all in response to the officer shooting and killing of an unarmed teenager near st. louis. here with us. and bob, what's the latest? >> reporter: good morning, scott, law enforcement has been asking the citizens of ferguson, missouri, to be patient as they investigate what happened saturday afternoon when a white police officer shot and killed a teenager who was black and unarmed. incident that many people in this suburb of st. louis believe might have been racially motivated. that call for patience does not seem to be working. >> they're firing on to the crowd. ouch. >> reporter: overnight protesters confronted police on the streets of ferguson. there are reports that some of the protesters threw molotov cocktails at police. escalated the tension with police in tactical gear. the parents of 18-year-old michael brown, the young man shot several times by a ferguson police officer have condemned the violence and the looting from earlier in the week as have police, public officials, and

local pastors. >> i know everybody is angry about a lot of stuff, but we need to do it peacefully. >> we're just asking people to be peaceful and that we are actively working to resolve this stuff. >> reporter: earlier in the day yesterday, protesters were peaceful, marching through town demanding justice for michael brown and his family. at night is when the situation has been becoming violent. media covering this event has apparently gotten too close to the action as well. you can see delight, that is an al jha zeer ra tv crew running for safety after a tear gas device was lobbed into their position. two reporters were detained. we're going to hear from one coming up within the next half hour. >> thank you much. 6:20, the ferguson police department says it'll release the 911 tapes from the shooting, but they have not given a timeline. in the meantime, a anonymous group released what it says is

dispatcher audio of that day. the police cannot confirm its authenticity. >> we're going to have continuing coverage of that unrest throughout the morning including a live report from ferguson coming up in the next half hour. also updating nbcbayarea.com. this morning in san francisco, the city itself is being sued by the family of the 16-year-old girl who was struck and killed by a fire truck after last year's asiana air crash. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez joins us live now in burlingame, and kris, the family says crews did not keep her out of harm's way. >> reporter: no, they certainly say they cannot. and that they acted recklessly and additionally they were not properly trained to deal with the disaster like the kind we saw here last summer. the parents of 16-year-old ye ming say their daughter lay on the ground outside of the reckage of the -- wreck achblgt plane and crews had several opportunities to help her and they failed each time.

television certainly a chaotic scene as we is' from video from a firefighter's helmet. the parents say they should have the training to deal with than asiana flight 214 crashed after hitting the sea wall during l d landing, the national transportation safety board has determined did was too low and too slow. the san mateo county coroner concluded that the girl survived that crash, but then died after being run over by two different fire trucks. fire department video shows the dirl covered in fire suppressing foam, but the family's attorney claims responders knew she was on the ground before that. her parents suit claims that crews, quote, inexplicably failed to evaluate her condition, treat her, remove her from the location where she lay in the fetal position. san mateo county district attorney steve did not file criminal charges against any firefighter responding that day saying it was a tragedy ek

accident. she was one of three people who died as a result of this crash. now in addition to this suit filed by the family against the city of san francisco, there are other lawsuits that are also pending about 80 survivors filed suit earlier this year against boeing which manufactured some of the parts in the asiana airlines crash. so far, it does not appear anyone has filed suit against asiana itself. reporting live in burlingame, the flights are taking off, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much, kris. we have new details on fire at valco mall in cupertino. the movie theeter it was evacuated when people inside started smelling smoke. by the time firefighters got there, they did not see flames, but did see lingering smoke in the air. because the mall's so big, firefighters called for back up to find them find where the smoke was coming from. people were told to leave. they said there was a lot of confusion. >> we just left the emergency exit and we were all standing on the sidewalk and nobody had any

clue what was happening or what should be done fre that point. >> eventually firefighters found a fire in the freight elevator near the movie theater. the flames were put out by the sprinkler system before they arrived. for a while wolf road was closed because there were so many fire trucks in the area. nobody was hurt. 6:06, time to check the forecast as we give you a live look at downtown san jose. several schools are back in session today to wrap the bay area including the morgan hill unified school district, jefferson as well as presentation high school in san jose. st. francis as well in mountain view. >> that's a lot. let's check in with rob mayeda and the back to school forecast. >> the forecast, very much like the microclimates around the bay area. daly city one of the cooler spots we'll see as kids go back to class this morning. temperatures in the low 60s with low clouds and mist. and climbing into the upper 60s later on this afternoon. and as we show you how things

look in morgan hill, it's going to be warm. looks more like summer with upper 80s approaching 3:00 today and around mountain view, temperatures climbing into the low 80s out at st. francis high school. looks nice and san jose, presentation high school should see the temperatures climbing into the mid-80s as we head towards the afternoon. the trend will be similar for most locations except in san jose where the you have the clear skies right now. it'll be the fog that'll take time to break up. fog reducing visibilities down toless than a mile currently around santa rosa. you're seeing that too across the golden gate bridge and the north bay this morning. mist at times with the low clouds, clearing and the valley temperatures today climbing into the 80s and approaching 90 here over the next couple of afternoons. including out towards morgan hill and gilroy, 38 in san jose. upper 60s closer to san francisco. upper 80s in pleasanton and across the north bay, we'll see the highs in the low to mid-80s. so the afternoon looking good, but mike that be fog can slow things down at times, especially across the midspans of the

bridges. >> so we give that warning because as we're talk about, the low clouds and fog could be issues with visibility. look, you can't see the south tower. barely to the bottom of the south tower, and the north tower you can't make out. it's right at the deck level. we're talking about the bay bridge and metering lights being on. and even in this shot, you see the low clouds blocked off. so the map will show you beth of those approaches towards san francisco. typical build on either side of the bay, but we're looking north of there, the orange blob covering up mill valley towards nevado. that weather data that's tied into our traffic system as well. talks about lower visibility. still watch for patches of fog. definitely on the area. highway 37 as well, over here, typical build for the tri-valley, same thing for highway 4, nothing unusual,

antioch, dublin, livermore, all the westbound commutes, holding steady for the slower build right now. smoother drive towards the bay. slowing for hayward down towards the san mateo bridge. in the south bay as well. we have northbound 101 showing a slow down there. 85, unusual, see the yellow stretch all the way down towards san jose. speeds are right at 59 miles per hour i should say triggering that yellow curve. we're tracking for anything going along the stretch, likely a couple slow moving vehicles may add to that. we'll look at the orange area for the live shot nor 101 at san jose. traffic starting the second burst. the first one about quarter to six and the second one 15 to 20 minutes. reminder that san jose unified is back in school sessions. so we're going to have a lot of vertically challenged, pedestrians, not you, laura. >> be nice. >> there's a lot of people out there. >> and some are walking with them. >> harder to see. i think is your point. >> just be careful out there. a policeman once told me the

the bay." and a snapshot of your morning commute and weather shows you the misty sky and fog across the golden gate bridge. valley temperatures though climbing into the upper 80s. we'll have a look at your forecast coming up. and a smooth drive across that bay bridge, but just like rob shot showed you, the golden gate bridge and the bay bridge has the fog. approach in toward san francisco and the slowing i also see in the south bay, coming up. at 6:13, here's a look at today's top stories. police in ferguson, missouri, will reveal today how many arrests they've made overnight with violent protests. the crowds are upset about an officer shooting and killing an unarmed teen. protesters threw molotov cocktails while police responded with tear gas and smoke bombs. pope francis arrived in south korea, this is the first papal visit to the country in a quarter century. he'll be in south korea for five days. and he'll take part in world youth day. of a huge catholic youth

festival. u.s. forces say iraqi refugees are faring better than first thought. about 20 u.s. military members assessed the situation in iraq and say those trapped on a mountain by isis militants are doing better than initially thought. and they say there are far fewer refugees than they thought and u.s. air strikes helped, some escaped. it is a bitter sweet good-bye for fan was candlestick park and for paul mccartney set to perform there tonight. >> what a final farewell. that's where the beatles played their final concert decades ago. stephanie chuang live at the stick right now, big show is planned for tonight, steph. >> reporter: that's right, good morning, laura and scott. the promotors handling there also handle outside lands. i understand that's when the discussion really began about him coming here for the final farewell event where you can see the sign is up here welcoming, welcome back to sf, paul. the show slated to start at 8:00 tonight.

now the beatles as you mentioned were here 48 years ago, and it seems they knew about selfies way before we do did. check out this picture, it was snapped by john lenin on stage during that final beatles concert here at candlestick park. that was on august 29th, 1966. now at the time, it was just home of the giants, the stage was behind second base. tickets did not sell out, it was 25,000 sold out of 42,000 at a cost of between 450 and 650 each. what a deal. tickets though are sold out for tonight, 49,000 people expected to fill the stadium, appropriate number, 50 to $250 a ticket. if you were lucky enough to get one, mccartney will perform for three hours. here he is on youtube showing his excitement ahead of toont's farewell concert. >> come along, be a part of it, 14th of august, candlestick park. let's do it. >> candlestick.

howling through the gap cooling thins off around candlestick for tonight. right now san francisco, you have fog, driving into the clouds, there across the golden gate bridge. expect that view coming out of maern county into san francisco. tops of the buildings in downtown san francisco now seeing fog there, setting up across the city right now. visibility in the north bay, at times, down to less than a mile, but again, the base of the low clouds this morning, pretty close to only 300 feet or 400 feet off the ground and obviously fog and issue down towards half-moon bay in santa cruz for the morning. and this is the pattern we're expecting this time of year. morning clouds followed by afternoon sunshine. fog will continue to stay on the coast. one of the reason why is at least for the coast, you're going to see much much change in your temperatures where we'll begin to see the changes will be the valleys. high pressure begins to build in, warmer days in pleasanton for this afternoon. start to climb into the upper 0u to low 90s. that's kind of a sneak preview of your weekend forecast too. 92 degrees there as we head towards saturday and sunday. but if you want to escape the

heat again, san francisco's going to be the place for you. heading into the afternoon, not bad. 69 degrees with those low clouds, pleasanton later on this afternoon, as you saw climbing up to 88. temperatures around the bay area as we head through the afternoon. 83 degrees in san jose, san francisco as you saw in the upper 60s. foster city about 75 degrees, and into the north bay, we'll have highs in the low 80s and around pleasanton. highs in the upper 80s to near 90 and livermore. that should be the way the weekend starts. upper 80s around the south bay. some cooling as you approach monday for those inland vaels early next week, mike. hey rob, as you know rob, because sir paul being in town, we're signing off on k fog which is now k paul, they're doing that paul mccartney and beatles music all day. from the east bay, a and there's some of the fog that rob was talking about as well. just above the deck, and so your drive is already getting -- all right getting into san francisco. north bay parts there, san rafael. easy, clear view of the camera.

right here at north road. look at the stop of the screen as you get over the crest of the hill. you have fog sinking in there. look at the map ts, traffic and weather systems tied together. this orange right here highlights the road weather index which says conditions are such that low clouds and fog may be factor for 101, definitely for highway 1. 37 into nevado. keep that in mind. the rest of the approach is towards the bay bridge. typical build there as well. we're looking at an issue. disabled vehicle, motorcycle in fact moves through 580, 980 transition. chp should be over there to help them with whatever they need. be careful to transition. smoother drive off 24 and approaching the maize, metering lights on. oakland cameras, southbound 880 moves smoothly past high street and coliseum. a little further back in downtown. we are watching the reports of another stall there. a big rig blocking your slow lane around the 16th. watch for slowing downtown.

nothing dramatic shows on the maps as we get back to the system, green around most of the area. hayward towards union city and fremont, we have your typical build towards the dumbarton bridge past the san mateo bridge. south bay, in routes looking standard here. northbound 101 getting read yir for the second burst to kick in. remember, schools around the bay kicking in. watch for pedestrians, trafficking is an issue around the school zones. the tri-valley we had your typical build for 580 approaching the interchange out of livermore and 84 in through livermore. mass transit, none reported as far as major delays. we'll track that for you roads and rails guys, back to you. >> welcome back again, thanks mike. still ahead on "today in the bay." walling walmart home. how a runaway teen was able to live inside the store, undetected for four days.

gestured angerly towards stewart's car. stewart apparently couldn't stop in time and hit the 20-year-old. no charges have been filed, but the investigation is ongoing. well today, lawmakers for a former boston crime boss will get his life in prison sentence overturned. 84-year-old gentleman whitey bulger was convicted on dozens of charges including racketeering, extortion, money laundering, drug dealing, and 11 murders. those charges date back nearly 40 years ago. bulger's lawyers say he should have been allowed to argue that the now deceased federal prosecutor had given him immunity. bulger fled boston in '94 and was a fugitive for 16 years before he was caught in santa monica. this morning police are trying to figure out how long a teenager camped out at a texas walmart. police say the 14-year-old ran away from home and was found more than two days later in the 24 hour store. there's evidence he visited other parts of the store, but

employee found him in an aisle of baby items. >> i'm surprised somebody hasn't already been doing it because you know they have everything you can exist in walmart. >> you can live in a walmart. police say it's not the first time the teen has run away. walmart will not be pressing charges. a follow-up now, the bay area homeless woman who stowed away on a flight out of san jose has chose an six month jail sentence instead of getting mental health treatment. mary long hartman appeared in an l.a. courtroom yesterday. she has a long history of trying to sneak on to bay area flights. last week she snuck past security at san jose international and boarded a plane to l.a. without a ticket. she was arrested at lax and told to stay away from the airport. the next day, she returned. and she was arrested a second time. 6:26, still ahead, severe job cuts at sisqo. will san jose workers bear the brunt? big change in store for

chemicals from its assembly lines. one linked to leukemia when not handled correctly. the other linked to nerve damage. it has not found any evidence the chemicals have endangered any of its workers. developing story, the crisis in iraq, this morning, some encouraging news about the condition of ref jew yes drop trapped by terrorists. "today in the bay's" richard jordan joins us live in washington with the very latest, good morning, richard. >> reporter: hi laura, about 20 military members went up to the mountain in northwest iraq to assess the situation. they say they found the people trapped there doing better than anticipated. and it looks like the steps that have been taken have been successful. u.s. special forces found fewer refugees than expected. it now appears to be farless. humanitarian food and water drops are helping to keep them alive. they conducted the sechblt air drop last night and air strikes

pushed isis militants back. >> air strikes ring appropriate given the limited mission the presidents has discussed. >> reporter: the white house considered air lifting ref jew gees trapped on the mountain, but now u.s. officials say rescue operations are less likely and so are boots on the ground. >> you look at different ways to move people who were in a very dangerous place on the mountain to a safer position. and that's exactly what our team is doing on the ground right now in iraq. >> reporter: the relatives fear there is no safe way out. >> they cannot move freely like in long convoys like with 60 or 70 vehicles, as usual. >> reporter: isis remains committed to terrorizing the religious minority. >> we cannot lose sight of the fact that this is the greatest terrorist threat we've ever had. >> reporter: a threat that requires u.s. and international involvement. and just this morning, britain announced that it will be sending some special forces to iraq, much like the u.s. support team that is already there.

france sending weapons to the kurdish fighters taking on the isis militants ound ground and germany will send over supplies. >> thanks so much. well, let's check your forecast. 6:32 as we give you a live look at emeryville and checking the forecast with rob mayeda, good morning. >> and good morning, mostly cloudy skies around the bay area right now the and drizzle in a few spots as we see san francisco and what you can see of the golden gate bridge is shrouded by fog there. midway across the towers. 61 degrees and mist falling at times. windshield wipers coming and going on the cars as they come through marin county, drop into san francisco, and temperatures around the rest of the bay area right now. 61 degrees. some of the low clouds have kind of spilled in the santa clara valley too with hazy skies and at times, north bay commute being reduced in visibility down to less than a mile. santa rosa over towards san rafael and down the coast, half-moon bay, santa cruz, highway 17 mist and drizzle at times as you head towards san

jose this morning. now through the afternoon today, we will see these low clouds eventually break up. probably towards 10:00 or 11:00 this morning for the central bay and our inland valleys, then towards lunchtime, valley temperatures out towards livermore and areas south of san jose will warm quickly into the 80s this afternoon and as we get toward tomorrow and we get closer to the weekend. that's when the temperatures start to climb up into the near to low 20s at times by tomorrow. 83 degrees today in san jose. numbers in the upper 60s near san francisco. close to 80 in fremont, pleasanton, and livermore, highs today, upper 80s to near 90. and that is a sneak preview of things to come in your weekend forecast. the weather will be trending a little bit cooler at times as we go through the weekend. temperatures again dropping a little bit towards monday, but starting to weekend at 92 degrees in the tri-valley and san jose, 88 on saturday, dropping down to 86 come sunday, mike. hey rob, starting in the south bay for this report, look at traffic flow, it's all right for north 101 and looks light at

680. bottom of your screen, right by the bushes there, we see a car over on the shoulder, its been there for a little while. there's reports of a stall in the area. we're going to say that it but i'll watch for more. same shot right by the arrow. north of there, another slow down shows up. typical pattern, again, but a stalled vehicle on the side and possibly sticking out could cause an additional slow down. nothing unusual for 87, 280, or 101 through the san jose area though. smoother drive for west 580 into the dublin interchange. build and now 680 sees the tri-valley slowing heading out of pleasanton and into in towards sunol. visibility is just fine, we're looking at 880 as well. hayward towards fremont and union city. southbound 880 shows the build coming off 288. westbound your commute away from us and in toward the little patch of sunlight we see, low clouds hovering around, not a problem for visibility across the san mateo or dumbarton bridges. wider look, we see a smoother

drive, on the peninsula side, no problems, again that south bay, not really a factor, but we are following the build as you're coming over towards san francisco and into parts of the north bay, road weather index shows the north blob there. it may be tougher to see at times public patches of fog registering on the traffic and weather systems. >> very good to know, thanks so much. it is 6:36 right now. >> let's take a live look at the big board in new york city. dow industrial 16,677 all week we've had trouble getting the markets to go much of anywhere. good news on inflation today though. >> at least it's headed in the right direction right now. 6:36, still ahead, black and orange update with amy g. out live to the golden gate bridge, low hanging clouds today. we'll check in with rob mayeda in just a minute.

you're watching 156 minutes of continuous news, weather, and traffic on "today in the bay." welcome back. the city of san francisco's being sued bay family of a victim in last year's asiana airlines crash. >> the 16-year-old girl was struck and killed by a fire truck while he was lying on the runway. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez joins us live in burlingame this morning.

kris, the family says more could have been done to protect their child. >> reporter: that's what they say, laura. they say that not only with the the firefighters and first responders not properly trained far disaster like the one we saw last summer, they also behaviored recklessly once they arrived on the scene. the family of the 16-year-old girl says that as their daughter lay on the ground outside of the wreckage of the plane, crews failed her on several occasions. and it was a chaotic scene certainly. we saw video from a camera mounted on a firefighter's helmet. the parents contend that emergency personnel should have had the training to deal with the disaster like that. asiana airlines flight 214 crashed at sfo after hitting the sea wall during a landing at the national transportation safety board determined was too low and too slow. the san mateo county coroner concluded that ming survived the crash, but then died after being run over by two different fire trucks. fire department video shows the girl covered in fire suppressing

foam, but the family's attorney claims responders knew that she was there before that. her parents suit claims that crews quote, i inexplicably failed to evaluate her condition, treat her, mark her location, oe remove her from the perilless location where she laid curled in the fetal position. the district attorney did not file criminal charges against any firefighter responding that day saying her death was a tragic accident. he was one of three people who died as a result of that crash. now as we know though, civil cases are dprimpbt criminal cases. the finding has to be beyond the shadow of a duet, in the civil case, they have to decide that it is probable that a crime happened. so we'll have to wait and see how this all shakes out. in burlingame, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." we do have breaking news that's coming out of los angeles. all lanes of the 60 freeway are closed after a fiery crash involving several cars.

this is about 15 miles east of downtown los angeles. initial records ska that tanker truck there crossed over the divide, hit several other vehicles, two cars caught fire, at least 14 people are hurt. three of them perhaps critically. we will continue to monitor this. 6:46 right now, we have new details on a confusing night for movie goers. the movie theater at valco mall in cupertino was evacuated when people inside smelled smoke. people evacuated said no one knew what to do after they got outside. eventually many of them just got in their cars and left. crews say there was a small fire in the freight elevator, but it was put out by the sprinkler system. for a while, wolf road at interstate 280 was closed because there were so many fire trucks in the area. let's check your forecast, live look outside at san jose this morning, several schools back in session for the first time today throughout the bay area, morgan hill unified school

climbing into the low 80s this afternoon and mostly sunny skies across the south bay where the low clouds might linger, closer to the peninsula and san francisco. and speaking of those low cloud. look at the golden gate bridge, 61 degrees. midparts of the towers, tops of the tower disappearing through the fog and mist. and we will see partly cloudy skies later on. viz nlt, less than a mile in parts of the north bay, you're sighing that too as you get down into the south bay this morning. you will see the low clouds break up around 10:00, but stay on the coast during the afternoon. this is a typical summer pattern for us. cool temperatures near the coastline where our inland temperatures will climb as high pressure build in today, mid to upper 80s and low 90s by friday. through the weekend. 83 degrees today in san jose. the peninsula looking at 60s to 70s. san francisco upper 60s, and for the farewell at candlestick concert tonight. we should see cool, breezy, chilly temperatures there. customary for candlestick park with the low 60s for that as we pass 8:00 tonight. north bay, highs in the 80s.

story, police officers in tactical gear lobbing tear gas. protesters and police tried to beat each other back, it all comes after the shooting death of an unarmed teen. bob redell joins us, this has gotten the president's attention. >> reporter: good morning, yes, president obama was briefeden to while on evacuation. expected to be briefed again within the next few hours some time this morning. the parents of michael brown, the 18-year-old man who was unarmed when he was shot several times and killed by a ferguson police officer saturday afternoon, they have called for peace. so have local pastors, law enforcement, but that message is not getting through. at least not when the sun sets on the st. louis suburb. few know that better than nbc's jay gray who joins us in ferguson this morning, jay. >> reporter: hey there bob, as you talk about another rough night here overnight. hundreds of protesters, more

police, dressed in tactical gear or riot gear. more than ten arrests, at least one officer injured as well. and the tear gas so was thick in areas like this one, you can still smell it. you can still feel it. you can feel the affects. look, its been four nights of chaos here, despite those calls for patience and peace that you talked about, bob. its been frustration, reaching the tipping point each night, and right now, it doesn't appear that things are going to get any better, strong police presence. its been relatively calm throughout the day, even the protests have been calm. it's when the evening comes and the night falls that you begin to see the problems here. missouri governor jay nixon, who has been criticized for silence during all of this released a brief written statement last night after midnight saying that he'll be in the area later today for the first time. he calls the situation deeply troubling. and really, bob, it is, there is still a lot of anxiety here, a

lot of tension, and a lot of unanswered questions. >> reporter: jay gray live in ferguson, missouri, thank you very much, jay. and police have defended their actions saying they've shown remarkable restraint given the fact they've been shot at and had rocks and bottles thrown at them. that's not to say that police have always been appropriate in their response. for example, there are questions as to why two print reporters were cuffed and detained yesterday while working on stories in the mcdonald's near the protest. >> slamming their soda machine, grabbed my bag, my phone, and put me in temporary restraints. >> reporter: one reason protesters are so angry, ferguson police refused to identify the whufrs shot and killed michael brown, arguing there've been death threats against the officer and it could be a while before law enforcement releases details about the scuffle between brown and the officer that led to a shooting death. the st. louis prosecuting attorney says that evidence will need to be presented to a grand jury first. and that could take a couple of weeks, scott, laura.
