from nbc bay area, this is "today in the bay." good saturday morning, take a live look at what could be a black and white picture of the bay bridge this morning. it's color. it's just gray out there. thank you so much for joining us. i'm kris sanchez, and you have a look at the forecast. >> it's looking at that picture makes me want to cuddle up in

bed, grab the blanket, oh, man, look at it again. looks so good. all right. let's talk about the weather. the fog, as you mentioned, kris, even in the city by the bay in san francisco, north bay, east bay, peninsula, south bay, everyone in fog and clouds this morning. but later on this afternoon, sunshine, temperatures comfortable, end in san francisco. it'll be a little breezy towards evening, and 73 in san francisco, and north bay averaging near 80, same in the south bay, and only warm spot is the trivalley in the 90s. overall, a nice saturday and sunday and chance of maybe a sprinkle, maybe measurable precipitation in the seven-day forecast. we are crossing our fingers, everything is crossed for that point. that's in the next report. >> thank you, anthony. we begin with a protest that begins with several arrests in the east bay. last night, police arrested several demonstrators in berkley. they were part of a group of several people who marched in

oakland earlier in the evening, gathered in a show of anger in the unarmed killing of michael brown. that started in oakland and wound up on telegraph avenue. the majority of the crowd protested peacefully, but a small group set offfireworks and vandalized businesses. you see a broken window here, one of the few smashed. protesters sprayed messages on walls with spray paint. this morning, the demonstrators left, and telegraph avenue is open. meanwhile, in missouri, tensions between demonstrators and police heated up last night. hundreds of people stood in the streets, and many people held hands in the air as police asked them to leave. a line of officers barricaded the street wearing riot gear and gas masks again. three businesses were vandalize in the protests overnight.

in 30 minutes, hear from the family of the teenager shot and killed by the police in missouri, and why they say police are trying to draw attention from the officer who pull the trigger. shifting gears now in less than 30 hours, the 49ers will play they're first game in the new home in santa clara against the bronc broncos. it's preseason on the feel, but behind the scenes, it's the super bowl. all hands on deck, tweaking the play book with traffic and parking plans after a less than winning performance at the earthquakes' game two weeks ago. area businesses are gearing up for the crowds. at the hilton, the parking lot is blocked off for a huge tailgate party. yesterday, a select group of fans, many won a lottery for the residents alone, got to see the 49ers practice at the facility. more than 60,000 people are expected tomorrow, and it will be the first real test when it comes to logistics there.

police say a lot of the problem was that people tried to get to a parking lot that was already full. after a four-hour drive, one fan got in late and stumbled around in the dark looking for her seat. >> there was a lot of people wearing staff shirts, but you asked, where's my seat, how do you get there? oh, i'm sorry, i don't know. you have to find an usher. >> nobody left early, so when 60,000 people all leave the same place at the same time, you get what you get. >> oh, the show ran until after midnight. it started late, to give fans time to get in. fans spent another few hours in another traffic jam getting out. good news? that is the last of the headache, of traffic headaches, at least, at the stick. from traffic to parking. palo alto getting stiff competition for parking. finding parking spaces is a problem, that the city government is proposing a list

of ideas to solve what is becoming a growing issue, and parking may be going high-tech. good news is that business is booming in palo alto. bad news, during business hours, some people don't want to take the time to find a spot in a city-owned parking lot, and instead, they are parking in the neighborhood. on mound, the city council will talk about a number of things to change that, and folks who live and work here say it's long overdue. >> it's a friday evening. it's insane. hardly anybody, you know, can find any space out here, and i come out here all the time. i notice that myself, i do three laps until i find something, and even then, we end up fighting for space. >> among the proposals on the table, palo alto officials want a downtown parking app, enhance the city's parking website, develop online permit sales, and revise the amount of time that people can park in the coveted spots. take a look at this video with an orange taxi cab weaving

in and out of traffic, dodging cars in the east bay. officers say the woman behind the wheel stole that taxi yesterday. she was driving the wrong way on highway 4 in martinez before she crashed into five vehicles. officers arrested her after she was treated for cuts and bruises. she was able to take the cab because the driver left the keys inside. she now faces charges of auto theft and felony drunk driving. he is getting ready for trial, a follow-up now to a former high school security guard accused in a violent attack on a teenager in a wheelchair. in this surveillance video, he knocks over the wheelchair and kicks the student in the head. this video fired up the campus, and the campus community, i should say, and led to the arrest. the judge ruled evidence to have him stand trial for felony child abuse charges. mitchell will be arraigned on august 29th. made a deal with the san

francisco da's office. four men indicted in the murder of german tourist will serve up to nine years behind bars. murder charges were dropped against them in exchange for a guilty plea on gun and assault charges in the 2010 shooting. she was celebrating her birthday and wedding anniversary near union square, caught in the cross fire of what police say was a gang shootout. the sheriff's deputy who shot and killed a boy in santa rosa last year is returning to patrol. the deputy, who has been on desk duty for eight months will be back patrolling next week. he shot the 13 -year-old andy lopez object of last year. the boy was carrying a replica ak-47 he mistook for a real weapon. they want him off the job and plan to protest in front of the sheriff's office today. still ahead, backlash for

that hate mail is having the opposite effect on the neighbor, and now there's more flags flying. we have more. >> god bless america! >> reporter: flags are going up all over this neighborhood as residents ban together to show they won't be intimidated. >> i'm so happy i live in america, and i can still, you know, put my flag up or down, on any day. >> reporter: apaperly, not everyone agrees. dean morris got a letter in the mail criticizing him for flying the flag daily. accused of being moronic and confused. >> it was just somebody's twisted idea why i should not be flying the flag all the time, and had references to, are you not happy with our black president? are you a republican? >> reporter: he was not the only one with the letter, everyone with a flag in the neighbor got the same message, incoming chase

pennington. >> i was laughing at first because i was in shock, and i was, like, well, this has to be some sort of a joke. >> reporter: pennington's shock turned to outrage. his grandmother who died three months ago, flew a flag outside her house ever since he can remember. >> she always had a flag up. she's called me to come help her put it up or take it down if she was tired or if it was starting to storm. >> reporter: dressed many red, white, and blue, pennington put up more flags today to show he's not backing down. >> i don't need it to be 4th of july to wear a t-shirt with the american flag or put my flag up because it's america the whole year, not just one day or two days a year. >> reporter: in fact, american pride has never been more on display. jodi hernandez, nbc bay area news. the california drought is creating a domino effect of issues including west nile virus season. five people in santa clara

county have been infected. the health department says those found with infection were found in the area between mountain view and south san jose. even small budles like one in a flower pot is a risk and gives them a place to breed. last year, there were two cases of west nile virus, and this year, five people have shown symptoms so far. all of them are over the age of 50. one man is still in the hospital. birdbaths nearly dried up creeks, and puddles on the site of the road can be breeding grounds for mosquitos. >> a lot of birds in the county with the virus, detected several mosquitos in the area that have the virus. >> health experts say use bug spray if out at dusk or wear long sleeves and pants. to give you perspective, 20 % of people will be affected by west nile virus, and some symptoms to look for are fever and headaches, meaning that you can

valley is underway. so, what's behind it? we have some answers. >> reporter: when cisco systems announced 6,000 job cuts this week, it hit santa clara county hard, and the county, especially san jose, has been struggling when it comes to job growth lately. >> most of the startups you see are headquarters now in san francisco. >> reporter: that's a trend watcher who points out while the tech industry is growing faster than ever, the south bay has been losing a bit of the job creating mojo. >> while the silicon valley is a great place to be in tech, maybe santa clara valley specifically is not attracting growth anymore. >> reporter: if you're looking for a job and don't want to pay for sky high san francisco housing, there are still options. for example, online tech book seller, chegg, of santa clara

who recently went public and hiring every day. >> we are always looking for technical and marketing people. >> reporter: have jobs open right now? >> yes, 50 positions, please, you know, please. >> reporter: they are hiring in the south bay, but they are also slumping and losing talent to the north. scott budman, nbc, bay area news. >> anthony is here with the forecast, a little sunnier than that, i would say. >> once we get to about 11:00 or noon, we're done with the clouds. very typical bay area weather. >> sure. it's nice in the morning to have clouds. >> of course. clouds and coffee, right? all right. let's talk about the weather forecast. here you can see we are waking up to clouds with your coffee this morning and low clouds in san francisco reporting delays, but otherwise there are comfortable temperatures, room temperatures across the board, 7 3 234 san francisco, east bay,

oakland at 75, the hot spot, that's the trivalley, close to 930 degrees this afternoon, and north bay near 80 and south bay as well. the microclimate forecast, san jose up to 81 this afternoon. and saratogo and morgan hill, and palo alto at 78. in san francisco, while we are not overly warm, it's comfortable, 67, heys valley at 67, and freemont at 79, and trivalley and livermore at 90 degrees, and danville around 86 degrees. you heard about it, yes, yesterday, the giants took on the phillies, and now today, game two, 105 first pitch, 73 degrees expected at at&t park, and a light breeze at 15 to 20 miles per hour, and, yes, heard about this as well, the 49ers' game tomorrow, and it will be warm there. in fact, a little different from

what it's been like in san francisco, closer to 80 here and northwest wind makes it tollerble against the warm sun tomorrow. again, warm across the board this weekend everywhere you go, even from san francisco to the south bay, but i want to bring you changing happening in the upcoming week. monday and tuesday, there's a system in the north meandering this way, hanging off the coast of california for a couple days, wednesday and thursday increasing the marine layer and possibly give us drizzle at the coastline, but then thursday and friday, once the system starts to move onshore, that's going to rev up the cool ocean air, and we may get a couple sprinkles out of this thing headed inland friday and saturday. overall, though, the general trend, today and tomorrow, warm days. monday and tuesday, talking about mid-80s across the board. this is for the south bay in familiar, but notice, wednesday, thursday, and friday, how temperatures decline. it's going to feel like october

around here rather than august. again, kris, temperatures coming from a 10 degree drop between now and thursday and friday, and hopefully showers will come from this. otherwise, we'll get cooler weather, which, i think, we'll take that. >> yeah. >> we need the rain, right? >> we need the rain, but it is nice for the cooler temperatures as well. the kids are in school, and those uniforms can be hot. still ahead on "today in the bay," a tough job, the man who climbs countless stairs to take out one neighborhood's trash.

houses date from the mid-1800s, and the only way in or out are the long, long stair ways. >> this is one of many unique streets in san francisco built on the emg of hills where streets were never built. that means groceries and mail come by stairs and so does the garbage. >> this is never easy. >> reporter: dave has been hauling garbage up and down these stairs -- >> up there is 170 to the top. >> for over two decades. >> we're going further down than that. >> reporter: on a place once known as goat hill -- >> now, we're going straight down. >> reporter: he fits the part. >> nonstop, pony express. yes, i used to walk up there as a kid. that's why i like this route so

showers end of the week. talking about that in a little bit. >> sounds goods. thank you very much. we have breaking news in san francisco where a 2-year-old girl was struck and killed by a car in a hit-and-run crash late last night. officers said it happened after 10:30 last night. a white mid-90s four-door sedan traveling eastbound on mission street between fourth and fifth street while it hit the toddler while in a crosswalk with the family member. the police are looking for the car described as a camry, honda, or lex yus with mismatched bumper and dark rims. anyone with information is asked to call the police. the 2 -year-old girl did die. the protest that led to arrests in the east bay last night, again, protesters part of a group of several hundred people who began marching early in the evening, gathering over anger in the unarmed murder of the teen michael brown. it started in oakland by

eventually ended up in berkley. the majority of the crowd was peaceful, but a small group broke offsetting off fireworking on the street, vandalized businesses, smashing windows, and spray painting walls. this morning, demonstrators left, and telegraph avenue is again open. tear gas canisters exploded again as the tension between demonstrators and police in ferguson heated up last night as well. hundreds of people stood in the streets, many holding hands up in the air as police asked them to leave. a line of officers barricaded the street in riot gear and gas masks. at least three businesses were vandalized in the fro test overnight. michael brown's family says the police are playing a calculated game of character assassination saying the police department is trying to put the focus on brown's alleged robbery of the market to draw attention away from the actions of officer

derek wilson. we were there as brown's family and attorney spoke to the media. >> the world is curious, why did you do that? why did you do that? of all things for the chief to talk about and release, at least release information on the justification why this officer would shoot a person in broad daylight? >> reporter: attorneys for brown's family called the decision by chief jackson nothing short of devious and said the still photos released by police do not depict the events inside the market. >> why strategically put this community and world through a day of seeing those pictures when he had a video that was a far better portrayal? >> we have a lot of freedom of information requests for this tape, and at some point, it was just determined that we had to release. >> reporter: brown's family calls the decision smoke and mirrors to distract from the real issue. >> this 1 a universal call for i surrender, and i hear my kouz

to american television. the governor of texas is finding himself on the other side of the law this morning. governor rick perry was indicted yesterday, a grand jury accused perry of abusing his powers. the case coming after the governor vetoed funding for the state's public corruption prosecutors. the governor stopped that funding after a democratic district attorney was arrested for drunk driving and refused to down. >> there's been immense amount of work that's gone into my investigation up to this point. i have interviewed over 40 people related in some way to the events that happened. >> governor perry is the longest serving governor in texas history and announced plans to step aside in january because the governor is pursuing a second run at the white house. well, it is a staple for some, especially college kids, but instant noodles or ramen, something is linked with serious

health problems for women. researchers at baylor university and harvard said those who ate it regularly likely to develop heart disease, stroke, and diabetes no matter how much they exercise. news is not too surprising since ramen is high in sodium and saturated fat. the study used 1 1,000 south coreeian subjects. we'll buy something different at the snack shack. sea world is trying to answer critics, and the park announced plans to expand the habitat for killer whales, include the one in san francisco. this home is twice as big as the current habitat. sea world is facing criticism after the documentary "black fish" suggesting the way they treat the whales led to the death of its trainer. >> it's about us giving them more opportunities to exercise, to engage, have a dynamic environment. it does not matter how big you

the g-men, philadelphia takes advantage of the mistakes to pull it out 5-3. to atlanta now, a's taking on the braves, and this one was ugly. atlanta powered by four home runs, and braves take the win, and the a's lead the west only now one game over the angels. back here at the coliseum, the raiders take on the detroit lions in the second game of preseason to the third quarter, most exciting part, the second round draft picks connects, and silver and black trail, and fourth, time running out, the third string quarterback finds butler for the touchdown, and the comeback is complete with just six seconds to play. raiders win in dramatic fashion, 27-26. still ahead on "today in the

afternoon. the north bay, warmer weather to santa osa at 8 0, and only east bay, oakland at 75, and the trivalley today, one of the warmest, livermore topping out at 90 degrees. it will be warm in the inland valleys, but comfortle at the coastline, and, yes, san francisco giants, they've got a game today, game two against the phillies, and 1:05, temperature at 75 degrees, and winds at 15 to 20 miles per hour, and tomorrow, first game of the 49 ers at home, taking on the broncos, and at 1:00, 79 degrees there. remember the sunscreen. it will be toasty and light breeze, only at 10 to 20 miles per hour. i want to take you into the upcoming week, monday and tuesday, a low to the north that's going to get cut off from the system, main jet stream, pushed towards the coast of california. thing sits off the coast tuesday, wednesday, and thursday with no place to go.
