from nbc bay area, this is "today in the bay." good monday morning to you, it is 4:30 a.m., i'm sam brock. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. we have a live look at san jose this morning. families waking up a little earlier, getting read why toy return to school. headed back to class, 11 different community colleges including city college of san francisco, colleges still fighting to maintain its accreditation. issue weighing on students minds this morning. 17 school districts are returning this morning. among them, campbell union in the south bay, and san francisco unified. let's check in and welcome back meteorologist chris nap loren,

she's got a look at the back to school forecast. >> hey, you know, it's going to be nice. a lot of little ones had trouble getting to sleep last night, i know i always did. first day of school. wardrobe picked out, i wet you do. we're starting out nice and mild. and kids are heading back to a lovely week temperature wise. we're going to be below average. 7:and 80s for the bay area today. and changes to tell you about. the humidity is going to return. we don't want any problems or the kiddos throughout, let's find out how your drive is shaping up. >> problem for the single guys for christina married, congratulations, welcome back. 580, congratulations to you as well if you're driving 580 through dublin. we had an earlier crash back at greenville, that has cleared at incident without injury. we're talking about tri-valley with an easy flow of traffic and tiny bits of slowing all the over on the right. typical pattern there. same for the south bay which is

the largest school district started thursday last week. wednesday, i guess last week. we have a smooth drive throughout the area. we're watching as laura has been talking about. around the school zones, be careful. but that's the big note with 11 more colleges coming on campus as well. we'll have a lot of commuters hitting around the area and some new to the area moving in over the weekend. i have friends with kids in college. i should be that hold. i am that hold. i'm not young, back to you guys. >> thank you very much. san jose police say alcohol was a factor in a major crash last night involving eight different cars. the fire department tweeted pictures of the crash in which ten people were hurt. it happened on east capitol expressway and on colla avenue around 9:30 last night. driver ran a red light and slammed into another car in the intersection. it rolled several times taking out other cars along the way, then coming to a rest against the light pole. the car then burst into flames

trapping three passengers inside. the driver ran from the scene. officers managed to pull the victims from the burning car. the driver was caught a short distance away. all treated for life threatening injuries. six other people were hospitalized because of the crash. no word on their injuries. it was another night of unrest in ferguson, missouri. more looting overnight in the st. louis suburb. police used smoke grenades and tear gas to disperse protesters still angry over the new details released about the deadly shooting of an unarmed teen by a local police officer. new this morning, the governor is sending additional troops to the area to quell the violence. "today in the bay's" jake grey is in ferguson with the details. >> reporter: date yos unfolded hours before the curfew took effect in ferguson. with armored vehicles, officers, and riot gear rushing in. >> i to alternative but to elevate the level of our

response. >> reporter: police used smoke canasters and tear gas to try and gain control what have they described as a dangerous situation. >> shots being fired on officers, a number of molotov cocktails being hurled, then the looting or vandalism of businesses. >> reporter: early reports indicate two or three people in the crowd were injured by gunfire. none of the shootings involving police. at least four businesses were damaged and looted. and for the first time, the violence stretched to just outside the police command post here. the call went out to every available officer to rush back to the area where dozens with shields, batons, and wearing gas masks. others with weapons drawn worked to lock down their compound. as another night of violence was unfolding, so was a new picture of what happened the day michael brown was shot and killed. attorneys released this stretch from a private autopsy hired by

the brown family. the 18-year-old was shot six times. adding to the hard ache, frustration, and anger for a family and community already seemingly pushed past its limits. now the brown family and the doctor who performed the autopsy are expected to speak publicly about the results a bit later this morning. jay gray, nbc news, ferguson, missouri. new this morning, one person is dead, four others hurt from overnight shootings in east palo alto. happened after 11:30 last night. when emergency crews arrived. there were so many victims, crews had to call for back rup help. it happened on hunter street in east palo alto. across the street from the elementary school on university avenue. lawyers for pge will be back in the courtroom answering to criminal charges against the company resulting from the deadly san bruno pipeline explosion. last month, grand jury indicted and issued an indictment against

pge accusing it it of it 27 charges including willingly violating the pipeline safety act and on sfruxs the investigation into that explosion. state senator jerry hill whose district includes san bruno says one of the key issues moving forward will be the close relationship and ties between the cpuc which oversees pge and the utility itself. >> it's clear that we have to see the u.s. attorney making some actions and headway, and that's what they're doing. and i think more importantly, in the long run, is that we need an independent monitor. someone, the city of san bruno has been asking for many years now. we someone independent other than the city commission. >> pg referred back to the earlier statement, quote, we do not believe that pge employees intentionally violated the

safety pipeline act. disappointing start to the first game out of levi stadium. the niners shut out by the broncos. dismal 34-0. many fans left early not sticking around to see the whole thing. they are happy with the new digs. >> the views good. you can still see the player's numbers, and all the visibility is good. the facility's nice in terms of the bathroom, and accessibility to the food. i really like it. >> getting into the game wasn't a problem for fans. hiccups apparently ironed out. vta planned to get 10,000 to and from levi stadium and managed to do. . with fans leaving the early, it was not tested on the back end. it would have been prepared if fans had stayed. >> we had trains lying in wait and they were ready to go, and we deployed them as we needed and people started coming out of the stadiums. >> parking at the stadium not as smooth. traffic flows on the freeways, but city streets, it was

gridlock. >> an hour 15 and hour 30 minutes from the time we got off the highway until we got into the parking lot. >> others complaining lots were too far away from the stadium. levi is working out the kinks. the stadium ran out of the hot dog,s with beer, and nacho. most fans pretty understanding however knowing the new stadium is actually a work in progress. it is our pleasure to say that we have welcoming back now a refreshed, exuberant christina loren to look at what's going on for what is for many of you your first day of school. >> first day of school. people watching the game, yesterday, it was so hot you guys. if you're going out to levi stadium for any of the games, make sure you're prepared for the heat and i left at halftime. it was that bad out there. temperatures in the 60s. if you or your little ones are headed back today. what a gorgeous day we have in store for you and really most of this week is going to be cooler

than average and nice. 50s and 60s. a little bit of patchy fog up in the north bay, drizzle along the peninsula, but here in the south bay, nice and clear for the most part. we're going to see the clouds thicken up throughout the morning hours. cooling clouds. look at your temperatures for today as a result. 76 degrees on the east shore today. and 64 degrees and beautiful san francisco. meanwhi meanwhile, the north bay today at # 0 degrees. so some subtle changes for the first part of the week, then unfortunately towards the end of the week, we're bringing back the monsoonal moisture. chance of thunderstorms, we'll talk about that. right now flashing lights. let's check out the drive, here's mike inouye. >> nothing unusual over there. over here the bridge, looking at the span and you can see the low clouds just touching the tops of the towers. as far as visibility goes for drivers, not a concern. but the clouds thickening up a little bit over the course of the morning.

laugh at the same time. stop what they're doing and pause for one man and deliver a standing ovation. people are reportedly gathering in places like cliszy field and justin herman plaza to pay their respects. en event comes on the heals of a trabt at glide memorial church in san francisco. the house was packed there yesterday with people paying that are respects to the oscar winning actor and comedian. he was a supporter of many loam charities including glide. the reverend thanked him for lifting people's spirits and reminding all of us to smile. >> it was just a good laugh and a good soul. so you know, what he said and what he did and how he did it. >> as you probably know, williams dayed monday on his tiburon home. hollywood looking to put together a tribute worthy of that acting lejtd at next monday's -- wejd at next

in san jose. mostly clear, but we are going to see the low clouds come down throughout the first part of the morning, coastal drizzle getting that this morning along one, but no problems just yet. mike and i will keep tabs for you. san jose nice and clear here. overcast to start all across the board as the low clouds taking up for the next couple hours. 81 degrees, cooler than average. 77 on the peninsula. and san francisco can hit about 66 degrees really comfortable conditions, even right by the water, but still cool enough for a jacket for the first part of the day in the city. 83 for the north bay, east shore's 70s straight up and 87 in the hot spot, tri-valley not breaching that 90 degree mark. first part of the week, low clouds will keep us cooler than average, then subtle changes midweek. temperatures fluctuate just a little bit. creeping up to about 82 degrees by thursday in the south bay, not by much. then friday, into the weekend, we're talking about a return of the monsoonal moisture. maybe showers, and it will feel

humid. dry heat for the first part of the week with the monsoonal humidity creeping up wednesday, thursday, into friday. overall looking good. closer look at your specific school district if you're starting school for today. and the forecast for that coming up, right now back to you sam and laura. >> christina, thank you. new morning, wikileaks founder julianne assange will be leaving in london soon, but he didn't say when or where. assange has been holed up in the embassy for more than two years. he fled there to face extradition to sweden where he's wanted for sex crime charges. ecuador granted him refugee status but british authorities have refused to let him leave the compound. assange told reporters he's suffered is health issues. happening right now, iraqi officials say the kurdish fight verse taken back the country's largest dams two weeks after being captured by isis militants. troops were backed by aerial support, but did not specify

whether ugs air strikes were involved. it is a significant victory against isis as the dam's supply and electricity. over the weekend, president obama cut his vacation short, returning to washington where he authorized air strikes to protect the dam. republicans and democrats alike are backing the president, but they also want more answers. >> i think that what's going on in iraq is horrific, and it warrants a response. question not just put our heads in the sand and pretend it doesn't exist. >> we're missing a critical question here which is what is our mission? what is the yits's mission, what are we trying to accomplish here? >> it should be noted, dozens of air strikes were carried out over the weekend. at 4:50, happening now, hot, dry weather is fuelling a fast moving wild fire burning near downtown los angeles. fire broke out yesterday afternoon in the ankless national -- angles national forest. this morning, 200 people were forced to evacuate the most popular campground in the

forest. 400 acres burned sending a plume of smoke visible across the basin. state route 39 is closed at the base of the mountain. the fire son-in-law 5% contained. plans to clean up a lake filmed with traces of mercury are moving forward. the santa clara valley water district is discussing ways to split up the lake to improve water quality. the district announced they'll take soil samples later this month. the district seflting two alternatives that leave the lake mostly in tact. one alternative divides the area where the creek, large lake, and new space public the other option involves a large open park space divided by a creek and smaller lake, and it should be noted we're talking about almadon lake. 4:51, this is the news that we like to deliver to kids. why stanford university says it'll pay your kids to drink milk shakes, coming up. wow, i should get in on that. i'm listening sam, golden gate

>> we work for you. fear the cougar. live look outside right now, it is 4:54 on your monday. we to want thank the crew. you just heard from at the middle school for the happy welcome back video. santa clara one of 17 school districts in the bay area headed back to school this morning. a number of community colleges are also going back to class. christina loren is back. she'll have your back to school forecast in just a few minutes. stanford university researchers are looking for volunteers to participate in an obesity experiment by drinking chocolate milk shakes. children age four to eight are needed for the study. looking at how the brain responds to pleasurable foods. researchers say just the anticipation of food can be more pleasurable than eating the food itself for people with obesity. researchers say that could be leading many to overeat.

anyone wishing to participate can call the lab, the number is there on your screen. and over liqueurs you raccoon found himself in a sticky situation in santa cruz. >> animal control officers were called out yesterday when the raccoon got its head stuck in a train cover. there you see it. the vet sedated the animal and someone cut the metal away. the raccoon was freed. he reportedly recovered quite quickly. shelter workers set him free ras night after a meal of grapes and water melon. he is clearly living right. >> no kidding. now at least. let's see if you're going to get caught up on anything. >> watch out for the raccoons and the drain covers. over here we're looking at, well nothing on, this is 880 at the truck scales. the truck scales picking up just as much traffic as the freeway. it's light right now out there as you might expect on the maps down to the south bay, no delay.
