this as a warehouse burns down in the east bay. alcohol in a smash car. new details about the eight car hit and run that sent eight people to the hospital overnight. serial stow away out of lockup. why she was released more than 100 days early. and instead of cranking the heat for the final weeks of august, we have comfortable conditions to tell you about. little bit of a warmup towards the midsection of the week then muggy conditions will return soon. i'll give you the time line in your microclimate in moments. we have that fire sam showed you just off of 880. we have the slow down, and now a new issue. stalled big rig for some folks, that's going to cause slowing on the bay bridge. let's kick things off right now with a live look at the golden gate bridge where things are moving smoothly for now. it is monday, august 18th, this is "today in the bay." from nbc bay area, this is

"today in the bay." and a very good monday morning to you, thanks for joining us, i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm sam brock. breaking news right away firefighters are putting wire on -- water on a warehouse fire. this is all happening at the intersection of san leandro boulevard and stone street south of 98th avenue. you can see here, smoke in the picture, things have gotten down a bit from moments ago where when there were huge flames. there they are. unclear at this point what happened and exactly what type of warehouse is on fire. we do know that firefighters had to call for backup twice. more information on that coming up throughout the morning. it is 6:01, new details stemming from a major crash in san jose involving eight different cars. the fire department tweeted out pictures of the crash that injured ten people. it happened on east capitol expressway around 9:30 last night. "today in the bay's" stephanie chuang joins us live from the scene this morning, stephanie, the roads are still closed this morning? >> reporter: that's right, good

morning, laura. almost nine hours later, and the intersection here still closed. of course the hope is they'll get this back open before the traffic builds. you know capitol expressway gets very busy. county workers are trying to clean up the debris. at one corner, there is a pile including a tire, car door, and this is all from a crash involving ten vehicles, police say 20-year-old driver was driving here on and run this red light, hit another red light. it's already been replaced this morning, then that car rolled over several times hitting several other vehicles. police say the driver tried to actually run from the scene, but it didn't take long before police caught it him. meantime, the black mercedes sedan went up in flames with three people still inside. we spoke with a man that says his car crashed into him. other witnesses tried to help other guys still stuck in the mercedes. >> when i got off my car, the

guy was -- the car was in flames. >> and some other people trying to get the other person out. they couldn't get him out. >> reporter: but san jose fire department was able to get that man out. two other passengers were able to get out by thimss from that -- themselves from that mercedes. firefighters did doctor have to cut open the car. the response altogether included seven ambulances and one air ambulance. police say the three passengers in the mercedes were in good shape. they are expected to survive. there were six other people taken to local hospitals treated for different injuries from complaints of pain to broken bones. back here live again, the debreen clean up still happening. we learned that the driver again, man in his 20s has been treated and released from the hospital. we also understand that he's been arrested on dui felony dui

and again, working to try and clean up this mess. it does look much better from when we first saw you guys at 5:00 this morning. we'll keep you posted throughout the show. live in east san jose, stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." >> stephanie, thank you. new morning, one person is dead, three others injured in an overnight shooting in east palo alto. the shooting occurred just after 11:30 last night when emergency crews arrived, they had to call for backup to help with all of the victims. in addition to the person who died, three others were injured. but we have not yet been told of their current conditions. we were organizally -- originally informed that four people were hurt, now they say it's three. this is near perdue avenue in east palo alto. right across the street from the elementary school on university avenue. 6:04, a serial stowaway is out of jail this morning. mary long hartman served only three days of her 117 day

sentence. she was arrested earlier this month after boarding a flight from sjc to lax without a ticket. the l.a. county sheriff's department says she was released due overcrowding. a judge put her on probation and told her to stay away from the airport. the next day she was back where police arrested her again. she admitted to violating her probation and said she preferred to go to jail rather than except mental help. it's not clear where she is now. time to check the back to school forecast this morning as we take a live look outside from san jose. a peek at downtown. a lot of districts headed back to school today. back in session. let's check the forecast now, here's meteorologist christina loren. who we welcome back as well. >> thank you, don't miss the bus kiddos, watch the clock. we have a good looking day shaping up for you. work, maybe you still have time

off before your kids do head back to school if you want to get them out doors today, fantastic conditions to do so. it is back to reality, the school year starting today, and in san francisco, comfortable conditions. 60 degrees right now. at about 8:00 a.m., through the front door of the school, it's going to be comfortable. holding strong with the temperatures in the low 0u all the way into lunchtime in the city. 65, hey, if you are waking up in the city taking your kid to school, keep your jacket with you. temperatures will be in the mid-60s. it will be cool enough for that. hard for me to believe i'm telling you to bring your jacket as we're getting into the end of august. that's the case, only right at the immediate coast. for the north bay today, getting spoiled in wine country at 83 degrees. 70 on the east shore. we are keeping tabs on the warehouse fire for you. coming up in just a minute. 87 degrees for the tri-valley, nice warm finish out there. but not hitting the 90s. as we get into the first part of

the week, onshore flow on strong. cool ocean air all week long. little bit of a warm-up, maybe one to two degrees. through the midsection of the week, then it's going to feel much warmer as we get ood surge of that subtropical moisture. i'll talk about that in the next report. s a promised first, here's mike inouye to help you get to work and school on time. the first concern you mentioned, fire, warehouse fire in oakland, let's get a shot from the coliseum camera, typically trained on the freeway. you see the smoke, you also see the water pouring on to that. that's just a few blocks away, if that. heard of no delays for the bart system yet, been checking with them as best we can. nothing to rely on the twittersphere also. this is off of 880, no delays there. you know what, avoid the 989 avenue off-ramp. if it's closed by time you get there, we have heard it of new closure, go completely clear of the area. again this is san leandro street south of 98. this will get more crowded as the commute is building.

smoke visible as the sun comes up as well through the area. now the bay bridge, lower deck getting out of san francisco and approaching treasure island. reports of a substantialed big rig near the off-ramp. there's low clouds and fog in the area as well. just for the time being. no major concerns, but again that big rig is the big areas you're getting out of san francisco. you are moving out of city so far. smooth drive into the city with the metering lights on and slow down, not berkeley, westbound 80 through the freeway. no other big suprises. we have the slow down for the tri-valley, and now south 680 through sunol and northbound 101 shows that build just off of the freeway, you guys talked about the fire you mentioned with the report by stephanie chuang. that's near oklahoma middle school. talking about schools coming back online again, give a note for the neighborhood by the airport, still have that intersection closed from the major crash overnight. >> thanks so much. christina mentioned not missing buses. we've done that. got to rem nins on the first day of school. 6:08, still ahead on "today

involving eight cars. three of those vehicles caught fire. people had to be rescued from within them. ten people were hurt in all, some of them with life threatening injuries. the driver who caused that crash ran away. how francis wrapped up his -- pope francis wrapped up his trip today. north and south to find a way to make peace in korea. south korea and the u.s. begin joint military drills that north korea warned would bring a merciless preemptive strike. developing story in ferguson, missouri. the national guard is now being called in to deal with ongoing unrest and violent protests. as this behavior continues, police say folks were looting stores overnight and throwing molotov cocktails at police. the police in turn responded with tear gas and smoke canisters. some protesters say the uptick in violence may have been linked to an overnight curfew imposed city wide.

the highway patrol captain in charge says the curfew is not to blame here. >> this incident began three and a half hours before the curfew was started. and i believe the continued resolve of a good people of this community will ultimately triumph over the few people bent on violence and destruction. >> now some background here. the protests of course fueled by the death of 18-year-old mike brown. he was an unarmed teenager killed by a police officer. a medical examiner hired by the family released his autopsy report and it shows that brown was shot at least six times including twice in his head. all of the bullets were fired into his front, none in the back. the justice department will conduct its own autopsy as well. and another one also being conducted by local officials. president obama will be briefed about unrest in ferguson today at the white house. at 6:14, new morning, wikileak's founder julianne assange says he'll be leaving the embassy in london soon.

he's been holed up for more than two years. he fled there to escape extradition to sweden where he is wanted for sex crime allegations. ecuador granted him refugee status by british police refused to let him leave. during a news conference this morning, assange told reporters he has suffered health issues recently. well new this morning as you're well aware of, back to school today. 17 school districts, and 11 community colleges were all back in session. and that means a crowded commute for us all. >> everybody hits the roads. let's check in with bob redell this morning, he's with the new superintendent in the south bay. >> reporter: today and running through the rest of the week, one of the largest groups of students here in the bay area will be going back to school. roughly 270,000 kids in 31 districts here in the south bay who all fall under the per view of the office education. and there's a new man in charge of that office. we're talking about supervisor

john gundry. two weeks on the job, comes to us from southern california. moments ago we spoke to him about what he thinks will be the number one challenge in his job. >> california is well known for underfunding its schools. and even though we're doing better after the passage of prop 30 and under the governor's new local control funding formula budget, we're in a better situation. all that did was avert disaster. it didn't give us the kind of funding we need to provide the best we can for all of our kids here. >> reporter: he is the fourth superintendent in recent years. his three predecessors were pushed out by relatively short terms. we asked him if he's feeling the pressure. he is, but he plans to be here until he retire us. here in san jose, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thanks bob. 6:16 right now on your monday morning. time to check your forecast as we give ewe live picture of -- you a live picture of san jose a lot going on on this monday. people are out and about,

christina. >> they are. they are. and if they don't get out and about this week, they might be kicking themselves through the final week of august. i can tell you, this week's looking good. we're going to stay level. looks like all the way through next wednesday temperature wise. we've got a good seven to ten days of a sweet stride of weather for you, bay area. and you know what, kids headed back to school. get ready for the day's heat, not going to be too bad. you want to prepare for summer weather. temperatures mostly in the 60s, we're at 60 in livermore. 60 degrees in san jose. 80 today. not bad, but warm by our standards. 55 in san martin, in san francisco, about 65 degrees. this is the reason why. full deck of clouds overhead. i want to show you the difference though from downtown san francisco where you have that thick marine layer. very shallow marine layer over montana hamilton and the south bay to kick off your monday. temperatures here are going to be about 50 to 20 degrees warmer than what we're expecting in your coastal spots. this is what we're working with,

cloud cover right now extending all the way through the delta. getting a little bit of the delta breeze even into the sacramento valley for the first part of the day. overall, looking good. here's the weather maker, area of low pressure offshore, it's to the north right now. what's going to happen is it'll start to sag to the south through the next 24 to 48 hours. strong onshore flow and ocean air transported all the way inland. we're going to start out overcast then once that fog burns up, we'll get the cool westerly flow. breeze, cool ocean air moving inland. these are highs today. hard to believe we're getting into the end of august. 77 degrees on the peninsula. 76 today on the east shore, and # 0 degrees up in the north bay. comfortable conditions. i have to tell you though, temperatures are going to stay put. but a we get into the end of the week. they're going to feel warmer as we boost up the monsoonal moisture. even the slight chance of thunderstorms, best chance over the higher elevations, thursday into friday. we're going to keep tabs on that for you. couple days to watch it. that's what we're expecting as far as the weather goes.

really no major changes until the end of the week, we'll keep you updated, right now your drive, say good morning to mike inouye who is a busy man this monday. wave lot of folks -- we have a lot of folks on the raep because of the school week starting. look at this, tri-valley has seen a good slow down for west 580. saw that burst cake in about 20 minutes ago. it's holding steady down towards sunol. just getting in towards sunol and fremont. there's your tri-valley, good volume there. also unexpected. this fire of course that we're tracking, we don't expect the fires. this is just off san leandro street. let's look at the camera, we see the smoke. you see this, this is just off of 880, it's also not far from the bart track fwhobs delays reported by bart system and no slowing on the freeway's, 98th avenue from what i understand is open, stay completely clear of this activity. now let's get a live look at the toll plaza where you have the

metering lights on. going back in towards the maize, low clouds, visibility's just fine on the east shore freeway which is moving slower in past weeks. again the volume building through the area. golden gate bridge shows you where we have an issue. more fog to the north side. you can't see the south, that is an issue getting to and from into san francisco. but the volume across the span itself moving nicely. no delays reporting. however caltrans has a single problem in belmont. north and southbound trains right now at least 101 and 102 are experiencing 25 minute delays and that could cascade if they don't fix the single problems by the next time the train comes through. the rest of the bay moves smoothly. again the slowing for the tri-valley and the castro valley. there's the north bay with low clouds. those are the only issues right now, back to you. >> thanks a lot. starbucks favorite, this one maybe the apex of the pyramid is making a comeback with a twist. >> already on monday, some customers reason able to get their hands on the pumpkin

the third quarter of last night's exhibition game. he was sitting on the stadium's second level. emergency crews responded quickly, taking him to nearby o'connor hospital, but they couldn't save him. in a statement, the team said in part we would like to extend our con denlss to -- condolences to family and friends. it was a disappointing start to the first game out at levi stadium. the niners shut out by the broncos. disease ma'am 34-0. many fans left early, not even sticking around to see the whole thing they do say however they're happy with the new digs. >> the view's pretty good, we got, you can still see the player's numbers, and all the visibility is good, the facility's nice in terms of the bathroom. and accessibility to the food. so i really like it. >> getting to the game wasn't a problem for fans provided they took vta. the agency planned to get 10,000 people too to and from levi stadium and did it with few problems. with fans leaving early, the system was not tested on the

it's actually pretty much been extinguished. at this the point, unclear authorities are saying what happened or what type of warehouse fire stwal occurred. we know that firefighters had to call for backup twice just to be able to contain the flames. "today in the bay's" bob redell is heading to the scene. he'll have an update coming up momentarily. 6:31, and this morning, the u.s. is stepping up its bombing strategy in iraq. today u.s. air strikes helped regain control of a dam in mosul will was controlled by isis militants. brian moore jiens us live. -- joins us live on capitol hill. why was this important? >> reporter: laura, this is the biggest dam in all of iraq. critical piece of infrastructure for a couple of reasons. one of which is that isis terrorists could have used this to flood nearby towns, kill unknown numbers of people, but they also could have used it to cut off electricity to a wide swath of iraq including baghdad

where, of course, the u.s. embassy is and that could have put u.s. personnel and facilities in danger. and that's why president obama told congress he went ahead with this action. the president did notify members of congress, republicans and democrats alike are saying that they are in approval of what the president is doing right now, but a lot of them believe the president is going right up to the edge of his war powers, and that you really need to get not just advice, but also consent from congress on further military action here. this turn of events though in anamosale was -- in mosul was critical, it could not have been carried out with u.s. air support. it helped kurdish troops get in and secure this critical piece of infrastructure, laura. >> good to note, thank you very much, brian, live from washington. >> thank you. 6:32 on your monday, time to check the forecast as we give you a live peek outside at the golden gate bridge. lots of school districts back in

session today. here are just a few. west contra costa unified school district, and palo alto unified. let's check that forecast with meteorologist and school reddy aficionado, christina loren. >> you need a bell. >> i do. my mom's a teacher, so we used to get that at breakfast time. yeah, enzwlie, enzwlie while you're -- enjoy that, enjoy that while you're eating your wheatties. if it's your alarm clock that went off, good morning. beautiful conditions coming your way today. all across the bay area. and the reason why, all of of that fog coming in off the pacific ocean. area of low pressure just to the north, strong onshore flow. and that means temperatures aren't going to climb that much as we get into this afternoon. let's talk about your school day forecast. focussing in on the south bay. you'll be in the 70s all the way between 12:00 to 2:00. you'll climb from the midup toer 70s then as you make your way home from school today. comfortable conditions for you only reaching about 80 degrees in the south bay.

and really, you can tell what's happening, the weather story right here all this fog in pacifica, that's going to keep your temperatures down to 56 degrees. meanwhile, little bit of fog to show you in pleasanton. not much, shallow marine layer and 86 degrees. you'll burn off in the pleasanton, tri-valley area by right around 9:00 a.m. you're going hold on to the fog until lunchtime. temperatures are comfortable all across the board. they're going to remain comfortable for the next couple of days. 77 degrees, perfection on the pence lan today. 76 for the east shore, 64 degrees in san francisco, and 80 degrees comfortable in wine country. now as we get into the end of the week, we have changes to tell you about, isolated thunderstorms, and muggy conditions back in the forecast. we'll talk all about that coming up. right now though, over to mike inouye tracking a couple things that could slow you down this morning. >> that's right. one we were worried about christina is not a factor. this is the water being poured on by the three alarm fire. right here, those are the bart

tracks and just a couple of seconds ago, actually a minute and a half ago. i did see a train traveling through that smoke uninterrupted, no delays reported. getting you out to the maps, this is off 880 near the off-ramp. also open, but you know, you might to want use haguenburger and stay clear, there is clearly activity there, we see the fire hoess and the ladders extended in the area. we're that canning that, meanwhile the rest of the bay traveling through the area moving smoothly approaching the bay bridge where we have the metering lights on and slower drive into the city. earlier stalled big rig might be causing a bit of a slow down towards treasure island. it's just affect accident the off-ramp at treasure island. we track that as well. bay bridge toll pla zab za, all lanes are backed up and filled including the 880 overcrossing and the low clouds, they're not affecting your view of the east shore freeway as you travel on that east shore freeway. now back out to the maps, smooth drive on the approach, also in the north bay, there's fog approaching the golden gate bridge. keep that in mind.

happening now, hot, dry weather is fueling a fast moving wild fire burning near downtown los angeles. that fire broke out yesterday afternoon in the angeles national forest about 25 northeast of the downtown area. this morning 200 people have been forced to evacuate the most popular campground in the forest. 400 achers that burned sending a plume of smoke visible across the los angeles basin. state route 39 is closed at the base of the mountain. the fire is just 5% contained. plans to clean up a popular south bay lake filled with traces of mercury are moving

forward. the water district is discussing ways to split up the lake to improve that water quality. the district announced it'll begin taking soil samples later this month. it is evaluating two alternatives that leave the lake mostly in tect. one would be dividing the area with a creek and a large lake and a new park space. the other option involving a large open park space divided by a creek and smaller lake. new form of solar energy is having an unwanted side effect. it makes some birds ignite in midair. california's energy commission is setting birds at a solar plant in the mohave desert. it is owned by google and two state energy companies. it works with concentrated sun raies to produce energy. the u.s. fish and wildlife service is asking the state to hold off until they can figure out what is causing the birds to die. >> bizarre. 6:41 on your monday, coming up next, was michael brown shot in the back? new information about the teen's death as violence continues to

cool today. where we have the shallow marine layer burning off. you can see here over the santa clara valley. definitely warm, but not bad. about 80 degrees and that's it for today in san jose. so let's look at the bay area from space. and you can see where the low clouds are at this point, they extend all the way around the inner bay making their way through the delta this morning. that's going to keep temperatures down even into the upper 80s. no 90s on the map. onshore flow stays firm. i'm going to say through about thursday. area of low pressure just offshore. that's going to keep the flow in place. things are going to change. rapidly. thursday into friday, high pressure comes back, it's going to pull up subtropical moisture and that means that muggy feeling is going to return to the bay area. thursday, friday, and saturday are the days that i'm really focussing in on for that, but that moist air mass just couple days away at this point from really impacts places like santa cruz and areas to the south. dry heat for us today.

always good to talk to you. i have an update on the national guard troop on the way in. they've made it to the area. and we expect to see them any time now 80 guardsmen, and their primary focus initially will be to zhur area, the police command -- secure this area, the police command center. that's where the problems were last night. police say two molotov cocktails were lobbed at officer in this area. area that was a clean zwoen no real problems until last night. when it happened things were locked down immediately. there was tear gas issued, i can attest to that. there were also armored vehicles, the officers in tactical and riot gear that all moved in. being played out for a couple of hours here. we are told by police that there were at least six people armed in the crowd. two maybe three people injured by gunfire, officers not involved in any of that, and four, maybe five businesses that

were damaged and looted, one of them burned and so a violent night last night. one that a lot of people may have been the worst since this started in the eight, nine nights that they've had to deal with this. and there's concern that it's going to be escalate as we move forward and so that's run of the reasons the governor has moved these national guardsmen in, laura. >> thank you very much, jay, for the very latest. michael brown was shot at least six times, including twice in the head. this according to the latest autopsy. the rest of the bullets struck his right arm. all of those bullets were fired, koorgt mexicos on to his -- according to medical examiners in his front side, not the backside. there were no gun powder on his body. all of this per a private autopsy conducted bay doctor hired by brown's family. the justice department meantime will be conducting its own autopsy and another one will be done by local officials.

and today at the white house, president obama is scheduled to have meetings about the unrest in ferguson, including the briefing by attorney general eric holder. we of course will continue our kovrng during our 11:00 a.m. broadcast including any remarks the president may give. and we are constantly updating our website as well, nbcbayarea.com. back now to our breaking news. the latest updated that we have for you, at least one firefighter injured while battling a massive warehouse fire that tore down actually the warehouse earlier this morning in oakland. >> let's go right to "today in the bay's" bob redell, just arrived on scene, what's the very latest there, bob? >> reporter: well laura, sam, as far as the oakland firefighter is concerned, it's a minor injury, taken to the hospital as a precaution. the person's going to be okay. you're looking a flee alarm fire that's been burning for two hours right now. there's three structures involved. there's a building that's down a ways. that's where the fire started just before 5:00 this morning. it then spread to the warehouse. the carpet depot warehouse which you can see, it destroyed and

there's a house on the backside that also caught fire. so the fire department right now whoo they've done is they've take an defensive posture in a since they're not going to go inside anymore because they realize there's no point in that. it'd be too dangerous. they have five lines dumping water, three lines from the air, from the ladders, two from the ground, and they give you a sense of just how much water is being dumped. if you look in the foreground and look into the trainage area, you have this river of water that's going all the way down san leandro. right up against the bart tracks. so that's quite a lot of heat they're trying to get rid of. a lot of flames. there are reports what the battalion chiefs, there were squatters inside the one building. they have not been able to find those people. and again, those are just reports. things that people have been coming up to them and telling them. one of the challenges was the

downed power lines. you can see them in the foreground. they are no longer charged, but when the fire first started, they were electrified, the fire department had to wait for pge to come out and shut those off, as a result, there's roughly around 5,000 customers in this area that are without power and will be without power for quite some time until they're able to fix this. so again, three alarm fire contained, certainly not out, destroyed their carpet depot, possibly another building and a home on the backside. one firefighter injured, minor injures i mentioned. chief reiterated that person was taken to the hospital just as a precaution. live in oakland, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you, bob. check back in with him when he has concrete details. in the men time, new information stemming from a major crash in san jose. last night involving eight different cars. the fire department tweeting these pictures of the crash that injured ten people. this all happened on east capitol expressway. this around 9:30 last night.

"today in the bay's" stephanie chuang joins us now live from the scene, stephanie, we understand that the capitol expressway will be open in mere minutes. >> reporter: that's right, good morning to you, sam. that's the good news because of course it is heavily traveled on this capitol expressway. you can see here that the street sweeper has been suckering the area -- circling the area. the county workers are just walking away now. it appears in just minutes this intersection will be back open. police saying that the driver male in his 20s sped through this intersection running this red light. and that's how it all happened. just after 9:30 last night. the mercedes then hit several vehicles as it rolled over starting a chain reaction that ended with at least ten vehicles, or eight vehicles damaged, ten people hurt. police say the driver ran from the scene but didn't get far before they caught him. the mercedes went up in flames with three passengers still inside. two got out, but one guy was trapped, firefighters had to cut through the car to save him.

we spoke with a woman who lived adjust few hundred feet from the scene who was getting ready for bed. >> right away we ran out and there was people standing around already trying to figure out what had happened. but what we had seen were several cars, and it was really surprising because of the car on fire. >> reporter: and closer look at the wreckage. san jose fire department tweeted pictures of the crumpled mercedes. the three passengers are expected to survive. there were six other people trited for different injuries from complaints of pain to broken bones. again, you can see capitol expressway getting ready to reopen. we also know that the driver, the man in his 20s has been arrested for felony dui. both alcohol and speed believed to be factors in the crash. live in east san jose, stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." 6:57, final check of the top
