is @nbcbayarea. authorities in marin county are investigating reports of a missing plane in novato. bob redell joins us with the latest. what do you know about the plane making an emergency landing a at nearby airport? >> reporter: the faa called the marin county sheriff's department reporting that there was a pilot in a beach craft bo nanna za, come frk brookings, oregon, around 9:30, this pilot reported aircraft he was having engine trouble. shortly after that emergency radio call, he disappeared from radar. he did mention he was going to try to land at nas field which is in marin county. they checked the field, they never were able to find him there before his aircraft, but there is a wild fire burning right now in unincorporated marin county. the fire department is on the scene. they've been fighting this wild fire, it's about roughly 30

acres, and they are still trying to confirm whether or not that wild fire might be related to the aircraft that crashed in marin county. but right now, there's still no confirmation that those two incidents are related. it's just the fact that the faa did receive this emergency call and then that pilot shortly disappeared afterwards from radar. so again, trying to locate that aircraft. they were that this pilot is the only person on board. we are just moments away from the fire, we will have a live report from the scene hopefully within the next half hour. meantime, reporting live in marin county, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> one quick update we just got off the phone with the marin county sheriff's department who said they may have found something, not sbeerly sure yet, it's possible they have discovered something in this crash, more later. 5:03, now on to new developments in ferguson, missouri, where the smoke is clearing this morning after another violent night. and another strategy from law enforcement. the national guard is now on the

"today in the bay's" kris sanchez joins us with more on that and the arrests overnight. kris, some people from california among those taken into custody. >> reporter: yeah, we're trying to track those people down, we know they are the among the 31 people arrested overnight. also folks coming from new york. that according to the captain of the highway patrol who is in charge of security in ferguson. the national guard also on the ground though keeping his distance for now. this is new video from overnight, unrest in ferguson as protesters once again garpted. -- gathered, some throwing bottles of liquor. in an overnight press conference, ron johnson said that while two protesters were shot by other protesters, dplis not fire a single shot. instead he said police used bull horns, flash grenades, and armored vehicles to push them back. in some places, captain johnson said officers came under heavy gunfire. police did lift that midnight curfew, but urged peaceful

protesters to stay at home because of the small number of violent agitators who says he says are using the crowd to insight chaos. >> i want the good people to come out and protest tomorrow during the daytime hours. make your voices heard where you can be seen, and we are not the cover for violent agitators. that is my suggestion. >> reporter: now the captain ron johnson also warned the media, journalists are just getting too close to the violence. in this video, you can see a photographer getting malox poured on his face, that eases stinging and burning from tear gas. here's today, grand jury could begin hearing evidence against the officer who pulled the trigger. that could happen as early as tomorrow. u.s. attorney general earthquake holder could arrive in ferguson to meet with officials including the fbi regarding an independent federal investigation. and we could hear more details

from the independent autopsy that was completed yesterday, along with the third autopsy ordered by the u.s. justice department. again, the curfew is lifted and no one expects that the protests are over. we'll bring you more updates in the next half hour. >> that's amazing. >> thank you so much, kris. san hose neighborhood is on edge after a hit-and-run crash, the second in the area in as many days. the latest was last night. somebody crossing center was killed by a car at balfour drive as well. "today in the bay's" stephanie chuang joins us live in san jose. dangerous events on the same road. what are witnesses telling you this morning? >> reporter: well good morning to you, sam, first i want to say that we are on central road. this is what witnesses were talking to us about. there's a lot of vehicle traffic here we're at 45 miles an hour and foot traffic. now a block down where the hit-and-run happened, there was no crosswalk, but there is a crosswalk where sunday night's hit-and-run victim was struck

and killed. neighbors here say there needs to be more measures to help keep people walking here safe. for last night's hit-and-run, the father of the victim was on scene. he was very emotional, understandably, one police officer walking him to a car to try and help him sit down nap hit-and-run happened about 8:15 last night on a street with shops on one side and homes on the other. witnesses rushed to call 911. we spoke with one of them. man who saw both hit-and-run accidents, both within 24 hours, and says now the city must step in to boost pedestrian safety. >> i saw, there was a big accident here and i saw a broken bicycle on the side. >> reporter: and this is the second hit-and-run on the stretch of center road. just before 10:00 sunday night, police say a black or dark colored sedan struck and killed 51-year-old man of san jose while he was crossing can the road. police say it could have been, is that he was on his bicycle when died at the hospital the

next morning. his family tells nbc bay area he just finished visiting them and was heading home when the tragedy happened. investigators saying they are also searching the area for surveillance video to help, but coming up in our next live report around 5:30. hear from the family members of one of these victims who really asking the public for its help. live in san jose, stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." >> hopefully they of a-end the people responsible, thank you. in the 49ers are trying to figure out how to help their fans deal with the santa clara heat before sunday's preseason game. according to the mercury news, excessive heat may have played a role in the death of a fan last weekend. the fan suffered is cardiac arrest, but witnesses say he was sitting in a sun baked part of the stadium that many fans had already abandoned. the paper says heat-related illness accounted for a majority of 60 emergency calls from the stadium during the game and two people were taken to the emergency room. the team told the paper they're

trying to cool down the stadium, but encourage fans to treat a trip to levi stadium like a trip to the beach. charity in santa clara county is taking another step toward helping undocumented children from find host families here. catholic charities of santa clara county will hold an information session tonight at their headquarters on the road in san jose. they are working on a proposal to bring 50 undocumented children to the county to give them a place to stay as the federal government processes their immigration status. organizers will hold a question and answer session for anybody interested in helping out. all of this starts at 6:30. it's 5:09 right now, christina was telling us we have a nice day ahead. >> it should be spectacular, christina, you have your eye on the prize toward the weekend. are we building up to beautiful weather this week? >> that's what we do, you have toe work through the weekend. here in the bay area this time of year, we will be the envy of the nation with the temperatures are going to be cooler than average. even when we heat you up just a touch towards the end of the

week, definitely going to be nice out there. only talking about the low 80s in the south bay. i want to talk about what's happening out there, weather story is onshore flow. a couple things from the satellite imagery this morning. we have thick low clouds from marin county through sonoma county this morning. the very tops, tippy top os of the santa cruz mountain peeking out. and a shallow marine layer. there's a live reflection of that. the thick pea soup fog settling if he san francisco. i want to take it easy this morning. the fog is thicker than it has been in several days. you're going to find visibility down toe a mile in some spots and drizzle out there this morning. might have top use your windshield wipers to take it easy. temperatures are comfortable, you don't need the jacket. 64 degrees to start. 73 degrees to finish out there. east bay conditions just lovely out in the tri-valley, will be on the warm side, but only bumping up the numbers into the mid-80s for today. 76 on the peninsula, and 80 degrees for us here in the south bay, just a gorgeous day shaping

up as that westerly flow increases. you can open occupy the windows later on. things are going to change. i'll talk about that in my next report. first though it's a traffic tuesday, let's say good morning to mike inouye. indeed it is a traffic tuesday. this is a crash that happened west 80, ashby avenue, the off-ramp, from eastbound 80. there's your commute heading toward the bay bridge, heading out of berkeley and into emeryville. all lanes blocked for three minutes. traffic is flowing past the scene of a crash. we'll show you the map, the backup not that extensive. it continues to build up towards university avenue. of course use san pablo avenue if you want to. the surface street, more traffic there. the rest of the bay towards the bay bridge toll plaza. no for concord, khan dord boulevard may have electrical work right in front of the christian style skool. there was an overnight crash that hit a power pole. there's traffic control, one lane is blocked, but still too

trying to make it to san carlos when he reported engine trouble around 9:30 last night. the pilot said he'd try to make it to nas field in novato, but air traffic controllers lost contact with the plane shortly after that. search crews set up an incident command post at petaluma point in hick's valley. they're searching in the area to see if there is any wreckage. "today in the bay's" bob redell is on his way to the scene. he'll join us with an update as soon as he arrives. one of entertainment's more familiar voices has died. don pardo health care the voice for nbc and saturday night live since 1944. he did all the introductions for saturday night live, he also announced game shows like the price is right and jeopardy. pardo died yesterday in tucson, arizona, he was 96 years old. >> pretty great history there. facebook is clearing up

confusion in people's news feeds. the bbc is reporting facebook will tag stories posted in user's feeds as satire. apparently to prevent them from being mistaken as real news stories. some stories from sites like the onion and daily mask provoked angry comments. it is only a test and facebook did not say whether the trial will be rolled out permanently across the site. the onion responded to this idea with a is a teerl article titled, area facebook user, incredibly stupid. we don't think that applies to us and we refuse that very notion. for a quick check of the markets, let's check in with havrpson pierson at cnbc's washington bureau, hampton, good morning. >> reporter: >> how you doing, yeah sam, start first with the futurer, they are higher after stocks rallied on monday. nasdaq at a 14 year high.

i have to tell you, we have such a spectacular day, and i am not kidding can around when i say spectacular. i don't like to throw that word around loosely my friends, as we get into today and tomorrow, considerate fact that we are now in late august and temperatures will only ramp up into the upper 70s for today with cool ocean air moving in just about all day long. so we're starting out of the upper 50s, low 60s out there. area of low pressure is the reason why. for us it's going to provide a strong onshore flow transporting the ocean air all weekend long. delta will get heat relief today. things change as high pressure takes control. pulling up the subtropical moisture as we get into the midsection and the end of the week. yeah, that can be a hilt sticky throughout, overall not too bad. temperatures will only nudge up by a few degrees. it's going to feel warmer because of that humidity, overall, not too bad. i'll show you the numbers in moments. 2i6r degrees for right -- 62 degrees for right now in the

south bay. 80 degrees, straight up, 76 on the peninsula. temperatures only coming up a couple degrees for thursday and friday when we bring in that humidity. we might get a few showers out of subtropical moisture. it's traffic tuesday. first let's check the drive and say good morning to mike inouye. >> good morning, christina. it is traffic tuesday, heavier volume but heavy through berkeley in through emeryville. here's the reason we have your fast lane or at least the hov lane as well as the right lane blocked. this is just after you've passed the off-ramp for westbound 80. funneling down to the three middle lanes here because of the crash with vehicles on both sides of the incident. on both sides of the roadway. we're looking at your map and slow ore drive develops before you get to university avenue all the way through the area. and look at the slower drive developing, just before university until past the scene. again san pablo, that's okay through berkeley, again the surface street you have to get there and get back, so you may to want stick it out because traffic is flowing.

they have to get enough crews there to remove the cars though. the rest of the maize and bay bridge approach, easy drive. the bay bridge toll plaza has no real backup to speak of. crash just reported here at west 580 at 680. i'll get you more details on that. the rest of the bay pretty smooth drive as well. just like the south bay and the vta, rest of the agencies, no delays reported for the agencies, guys, back to you. >> thank you very much, mike. pair of mosquito foggings slated for the bay area tonight. they will be fogging in the shaded area on your screen starting at 8:00 tonight. that fogging area is right next to be delasalle high school. fogging is expected to last several hours and in the south bay, it'll start at 11:00 tonight in the area on your screen. it's part of sunnyville, central expressway, and highway 85. fog willing last until about 2:00 tomorrow morning.

latest round comes just days after santa clara county health officials announced five cases of people infected with west nile virus. two people suffered serious complications. last year, just two people in the county contracted. the port of san francisco is trying to figure out about what to do with an empty parking lot once considered a prime piece of real estate. authorities tell the examiner that piers 30 and 32 are in danger of collapsing within the next decade unless they complete seismic retrofit lg. they estimate the price tag for all of that could reach $87 million. san francisco has had several big plans for piers 30 to 32, including hotels and condos, new arena for the warriors, you'll recall. even a cultural museum. all of the projects have fallen through the cracks. the port says it does not have the money for the repairs right now, so it is still considering all of its options. it is 5:21, coming up, the new study that looks at just how

"today in the bay's" bob redell joins us live from the scene. the plane was headed from oregon to san carlos when it reported engine trouble? >> reporter: correct, this was around 9:30 last night. the emergency contact from the pilot it's a small aircraft saying that it was having engine problems. shortly after that radio call, disappeared from radar. he mentioned he was going to try

to land at nas field. people had gone to the airport, not been able to locate the aircraft. we just arrived on the scene, an area that was burning overnight, 30 acre wild fire. this is where the fire department believes they have found wreckage, said they cannot confirm yet if this is related to this aircraft, but they believe they have found the wreckage and that when that plane crashed, that would have caused this wild fire. now it's hard to tell if it's still burning, we don't see any flames. faa believes that this person, this pilot was the only person on board the aircraft, again, flying from brookings, oregon, to san carlos on the planes. reporting engine trouble around 9:30, disappearing from radar right after that, and unfortunately, it sounds like he may have crashed. reporting live here in marin county, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> prayers are with him, thank

you, bob. plus are looking for two different drivers involved in separate hit-and-runs at the same san jose neighborhood. both collisions happened within 24 hours of each other. stephanie chuang joins us live at the scene at the latest crash. steph, some neighbors say more needs to be done to protect pedestrians there. >> reporter: that's right, good morning, sam. it's 45 miles an hour here for the speed limit on center road which is pretty popular. for last night's hit-and-run, which was a block down, there's no crosswalk. but there is one here where sunday night's hit-and-run crash happened. and neighbors saying there needs to be more measures put in place here because there's so much foot traffic. you see the shopping plaza behind the cross walk there. it's very popular. so two hit-and-runs in 24 hours on the stretch of center road. just before 10:00 sunday night, police say a black or dark colored sedan hit 51-year-old son wynn of san jose. possibly on his bicycle when died at the hospital the next

morning. family's telling nbc, family members telling nbc bay area he had just finished visiting them and was heading home when the tragedy happened. they are asking for the public's help. and asking for the driver to surrender. >> you should just turn yourself in, what you did isn't right. think about the person that you hit and his family and who he has around him. >> reporter: you can see how family members of course very impacted and the father of last night's hit-and-run scene, the victim was on scene. very emotional. one police officer walking that father to a car trying to help him sit down. than hit and run happened around 8:15 last night on center road which stops own -- shops on one side, homes on the other. investigators are looking for footage. now, coming up in our next report, about half an hour around can have, hear frr neighbors about -- from neighbors about what they want done here to help keep people

safe. and maybe stay dry. live in san jose, stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." >> steph, thank you very much. plus are worried a bay area martial arts teacher accused of molesting a 17-year-old may have other victims as well. jorge tejada was arrested last thursday, police just released details this week. tejada is an instructor at the wellness, that's a martial arts studio in palo alto. female student who is now an adult says that last year he put his arms around her, grabbed her face and tried to kiss her. she managed to get away, but police are looking for more possible victims than what is a very upsetting potential. they are going to let us know if they have an update and we'll bring that to you. tribute to robin williams keep pouring in around the bay area. mills valley theater will hold a comedy hour in his honor. williams performed many times over the years. these are pictures of him there. they plan to honor his life tonight at 8:00 with an

unofficial tribute. >> honk for robin williams. >> yesterday devoted fans organized a last curtain call for williams. at 1:00 p.m., groups across the country like this one in san francisco stood up and cheered. tributes continue online as well. someone started this petition on change.org to rename a classroom in williams's honor. it was the setting for scenes of the movie flubber, starring williams back in 1997. today san jose city council members will put the finishing touches on plans to turn hotels into homes for people who don't have anywhere to live. kris sanchez joins us live. it is the final step in making all of this happened. >> it's a domino effect and the planning commission has been saying this for a while, they voted to make this happen. so today the city council in full will consider the same proposal. they think that this will be an effort to get folks on the road to more permanent housing.

the council will move on whether or not to change the zoning code to allow people to use existing hotels and motels for temporary housing using vouchers from the city. homeless advocates say this could safe the city money. people who have housing have better health and more able to find employment they say. we last talked with city councilman sam ricardo who is running for mayor about this plan, he said making hotel space available is not a temporary solution. >> the idea is to bring in another party who can provide the case management and the other services that are needed to ensure we have a pathway to success. >> it is estimated that san jose has a homeless population of more than 3600 people and growing. many of them staying encampments like this one called the jungle. over by happy hallow park and zoo. the city's report says the plan could help hotels in the zoned areas because many of them have suffered from crime and blight and vacancy rates.

hotel owners are not so sure, but the planning commission has given. a green light, this is possibly an go. >> no problem it's -- question it's a problem here. the city of santa clara may soon do away with plastic bags. the city council will consider an ordnance tonight banning single use plastic bags. santa clara of course would join a growing list of cities in the bay area and across the state of california getting rid of the kinds of bags. tonight's meeting starts at 7:00. live look outside at the south bay this morning, students in sunnyville are headed back to class today. let's check in with meteorologist christina loren, it's going to be a nice way to ease into the classroom, good weather. >> yeah, really nice weather. so nice in fact teachers in sunnyville can open up the windows. good to moderate air quality and temperatures are only going to ramp up into the 70s along the peninsula. gorgeous day shaping up. for us here in the south bay, 62

more about the changes and who could see showers as we get into the end of the week and your weekend. first though, let's check your drive, traffic tuesday, alert, good morning. better news for the berkeley crash. we have all lanes cleared now westbound 80. look at all this. all lanes cleared of the crash, but not clear of traffic. this is university. the backup from golden gate field all the way westbound until you get to powell then loosening up. that means more traffic heading over toward the bay bridge toll plaza. there is a slower drive into berkeley. especially the cash lanes to start the backup. we'll see the metering lights turned on. over at the golden gate area, easier drive, but we have a crash south 101. watch it, the golden gate bridge itself moves smoothly. that's good news for the commuters into and out of the north bay. we'll look at the maps. rest of the bay pretty smooth drive. there's a new crash on fremont, back to you guys for now. it's 5:39, we continue to

developing news, another night of violent confrontations in ferguson, missouri. these are night vision images of what happened overnight. police and protesters squared off once again in what has become a very familiar sight. overnight smoke canasters and tear gas tossed into the crowd by officers. "today in the bay's" jay gray has been in ferguson since this started more than a week ago, what's it like there this morning? i guess you're glad to see the sunrise? >> reporter: absolutely, good to talk to you. things do calm down in the morning hours. there's always that tension that hangs here. that concern about what's to come here. and it turned into a vicious

cycle really. police and protesters clash tonight, the tear gas comes out, so does the smoke canisters, there were shots fired last night. police say a lot of the shots fired at them overnight. they were also plagued by people throwing bottles and rocks and other items, a couple of officers were injured, nothing significant. they were treated then released on the scene. two people were hit by gunfire last night in the crowd. that's from other people who were there. there were two buildings that were burned. 31 people in all arrested overnight. and officers say this is all a result of a smaller group within these protesters that seem to be causing all of the problems. and a lot of them not even from this area. in fact, they tell us last night many of the people arrested are not from ferguson, there were people from as far away as new york and los angeles. and they're really frustrated about that. and the idea here is that they want these protesters to have a

right to be there to help them as they try policing here. going as far as saying look, if you're going to protest, maybe your voice can be heard during the daylight hours if possible. that's because they feel like this criminal element as they call it is hiding behind the message and the darkness of night here, laura. thanks for the latest. new this morning health officials are reiterating their warnings to stay away from african countriesed a the number of people's lives claimed by ebola continues to arrive. deaths have risen to more than 1200 people. some entire villages have been quaranti quarantined, others are limiting access to food in many cases. remains a of the victims of malaysia airlines flight 17 are being returned now to their families.

malaysia's defense minister sies the remains of at least 16 people will be flown back to the country. flight 17 was on its way from amsterdam to kuala lumpur last month when it was shot down over an area of eastern ukraine controlled by pro-russian separatists. victims remains were taken to the netherlands for identification. happening now, hundreds of people are out of their homes this morning pushed out by flames burning near yosemite national park. the junction fire started yesterday as already burned more than 1200 acres of grass and trees. at one point, 13,000 homes were in the line of fire but its been reduced to 500 that the hour. number of hotels at the town of oakhearse about 60 miles away have been evacuated. right now, firefighters are stimtrying to stop that fire from spreading. we are joined now by our acclaimed meteorologist for the microclimate forecast, christina loren, christina, obviously so many fires all over the bay area these days. what is i guessry.

>> at a timing, the dry conditions? >> definitely. if we go to next year, it could be worse. the red flag warnings in the bay area, it's so moist, onshore flow, the thick low clouds, we have high humidity levels in the morning. up to about 95% in fact where we get that full saturation in san francisco, but as you get out into the east bay, obviously drier out there in the evening hours our humidity it is falling to about 30, 40%. so that hasn't been the case, and that's actually been helping firefighters knock down whatever it does develop or precipitate as you like to say quickly. that is what exactly happened. local heroes throughout, we tip our hats to you. 60 degrees in concord, 61 in oakland this morning, and 61 in beautiful san francisco. what a gorgeous day all across

the bay area, not too hot, not too cold. temperatures today are going end to up in the mid to upper 2340u6 places like -- 60s in the places like san francisco. we'll show you what it looks like right now from space looking at the bay area. and of course in san francisco. known r its iconic fog. area of low pressure is bringing in that onshore flow. as we head through the afternoon hours, fog's going to burn off at about lunchtime, but the cool ocean air will continue to move jib land. you can open up the windows in your home and gorgeous conditions on the way for the next couple days. then things change. high pressure takes control. pulling up the moisture from off the coast of baja. we have moisture available too, tropical systems could provide quite a bit of moisture if we see any shower activity, best chance over the higher elevations in the south bay. and we're really bullseyeing friday into saturday for that. of course a couple days to watch that and we'll keep you updated.

65 in san francisco, 76 on the peninsula, and # 0 degrees in the south bay. taking you to the end of the week, and temperatures stay steady. although the humidly will creep up. it'll feel like the mid to upper 80s thursday, friday, saturday as well. we'll lose the abundant sunshine. overall, not too bad. . very slow westbound 80 through berkeley as you go down to powell. then burst of traffic now relief as all lanes have cleared and there's the toll plaza, metering rights on. typical schedule for a tuesday, but it's backed past the west grand avenue onramp. slower drive on that approach and jammed up through berkeley. san pablo avenue is the alternate. and it's a surface straight to and it will be crowded as well. may just to want stick it out, very slow drive from golden gate field down to powell. rest of the bay hasn't rippled back. still moving smoothly and 24 not

an update now to breaking news, marin county sheriff's department is investigating reports of a small plane crash near novato. bob redell has arrived at the scene. it's so foggy it's difficult to see the fire on the ground. but crews are still looking for any possible wreckage. the faa tells us a single engine plane was flying from brookings, oregon, trying to make it to san carlos when the pilot reported engine trouble at about 9:30 last night. the pilot said he would try to make it to nas field in novato. air traffic controllers lost contact with the plane. bob redell talking to sheriffs right now. we will have an update in minutes. pricing war heats up in the wireless world.
