>> this is the book that a lot of celebrities would like to write but have no guts to do it. new unrest and chaos in the missouri city once again sparked by the police shooting of michael brown. for the first time police were backed up by members of missouri's national guard. but the troops kept their distance from the protesters. this as attorney general eric holder prepares to travel to ferguson to meet with investigators and community leaders. we'll talk to michael brown's parents in a moment. but first nbc's ron allen is in ferguson. good morning to you. >> good morning to you, matt. yes, police say they were targeted by a small criminal element using the protest as cover. they made 31 arrests. there is that new twist. many were from out of town, they say, from as far away as california and new york. police rush in. a strong show of force. firing tear gas to disburse a

huge crowd. making dozens of arrests. police track down, they say, when their units came under attack. >> i listened under the radio and heard the officers who were under gunfire. we can't have this. >> police tried yet another tactic. with the national guard as backup. curfew. more officers on foot, trying to give the protesters a designated space. >> these are the rules. you can march a quarter mile in that direction, a quarter mile in that direction. this is the stretch of road where some of the worst violence has happened in the past few days. the protesters's loudest demand, arrest under darren wilson who shot and killed brown. >> why hasn't he been processed like anybody else? like anybody else. that's all we're asking, man. if he is so innocent, what do he have to be afraid of the law for? he is the law. >> earlier brown's family released reports of an autopsy they commissioned. graphic details. six gunshot wounds, two to the

head. >> all of these gunshot wounds were survivable except for the one in the top of the head when it went through the brain. >> while brown's family claims he was surrendering, police insist he physically assaulted the officer. it may take months to decide whether to charge the officer. >> we want to do it as expeditiously as possible, but we don't want to do it quickly. we want it to be very thorough. >> now offering support to the brown family is the mother of trayvon martin writing, i wish i had a word of automatic comfort, but i don't. police in ferguson fight an uphill battle to keep the peace. and police seem very focused on as much intelligence as they can about the protest. one reason they may have arrested so many people. names, addresses and phone numbers to follow up on. matt? >> ron allen, thank you very much. michael brown's parents joining

us with their attorney. good morning to all of you. mr. brown and ms. mcspadden, my condolences on the loss of your son. >> thank you. >> a 10th straight night of violence in ferguson. the national guard is there. still the violence ended just hours ago. what will bring peace to the streets of ferguson? >> justice. justice will bring peace, i believe. >> only if that justice results in the arrest or charges being filed against officer wilson? is that what it's going to take? >> yes. him being arrested, charges being filed, and a prosecution. him being held accountable for what he did. >> mr. brown, do you have faith in the system in this matter? >> yes, i do. >> do you think it's worked so far? >> no.

>> so what gives you the faith that it will work eventually? >> eventually justice will prevail. >> i want to ask you about the autopsy that was conducted on behalf of your family by the doctor. i don't want to go into great detail. but we do know he was shot six times. did you learn what you think you needed to know from that autopsy that gives you a clearer picture of what happened to your son that night? >> no. >> what more do you need to know? >> why? >> why? >> why? what was the cause for that? >> excessive force. >> the excessive force. >> unnecessary. >> i want to ask you -- >> nobody deserves that. >> let me ask you about that force. ben, let me bring you in on this one. the st. louis county prosecutor

said police shootings are different from other shootings because officers by law are authorized to use force. and he said you have to determine whether the level of force in each case was appropriate or excessive. ben, based on what you saw in that autopsy performed by dr. bodden, are you confident that this was excessive force? >> i think clearly this was excessive force, matt. in fact, you look at the autopsy and the witness accounts, when he put his hand up and surrendered. and all the witnesses say police continued to shoot, it's going to be an issue that comes before this prosecution, praying that he is arrested, matt. the jury is going to have to decide what is the amount of necessary force to use. because all the witnesses said it seemed like an execution-style murder. and that's why there is so much unrest, to say you can't do this to our children in broad

daylight. >> ms. mcspad spadden and mr. brown, you say you were looking for justice for your son. do you think this continuing violence in the streets of ferguson night after night runs the risk of overshadowing that search for justice. in some ways, does it detract from justice for your son? >> no. no. >> i think that it does somewhat. because it is a distraction. but we won't lit it distract us. we have to remain focused and strong and the violence needs to stop. maybe they will remain the locals. >> we need to keep the focus on michael brown jr. that's what we need to keep the focus on, michael brown jr.

>> mr. brown, ms. mcspadden, ben, thank you so much for your time this morning. i appreciate it. >> thank you, matt. >> a dangerous new wildfire is raging in california near yosemite. the flames burning near a propane company leading to the evacuation of 13,000 homes and businesses. >> it's not a lot of great news. there's no relief in sight. we have more rain to talk about. we'll show you what we're looking at. just to the east we have monsoonal moisture making its way into the southwest. that's not getting into where they need the help the most. we have a high fire danger in central and southern california. and adding to that, we have extreme to exceptional drought for the entire state of california. there's no relief in sight.

the jet stream is up to the north. so that's not helping. and the other big story we're watching in the southeast, this upper level high pressure going to be watching temperatures rising up into the upper 90s from oklahoma city, st. louis, thursday, 95 in atlanta. 92 in houston and atlanta. with humidity levels that are going to bring the heat indexes well into 100. it will top out by friday. a lot of dangerous heat, especially for the elderly and the young throughout a good portion of the southeast and the plains.

turn the tide against isis or was this one isolated victory? >> bill neeley in iraq, thank you. fighting between israel and hamas fighters in gaza. the new violence flared just after they said to extend another day. a southern california community is on edge after police say they uncovered a mass shooting spot at a high school. south pasadena police arrested two teenagers monday who they say planned to kill three staff members and gun down as many students as possible. the suspects did not have any weapons, but police say they were trying to get them. a school staffer noticed something suspicious and that's when he called police. school is scheduled to resume on thursday. a frightening scene in los angeles monday night when an suv plowed through a crowded pizza shop. this happened at a little cesars

>> maybe call one daniel. >> stick a middle initial in there. >> reporter: both candidates passed on that option. the key letters here may not be "a" and "s" but "r" and "d" since the balance of power in the senate may rest on dan sullivan's face-off with mark begich this november. so is america's state big enough for two dan sullivans? >> absolutely. >> reporter: we did send the other dan sullivan campaign an invoice for $100,000 for using my name for campaign purposes. haven't seen a check yet, but we're hoping. >> we might have an invoice that's a lot larger for him just because of all the advertising that's gone into the senate race. >> reporter: these dan sullivans are pretty good sports. we had to ask could they actually be related. it turns out the mayor dan sullivan, a popular irish pub owner in anchorage is actually into genealogy and he offered to go back to ireland and do research, as he put it, pub by pub. other dan sullivan may take him up on that.

she now knows what he looks like. she hopes by releasing the tape she and the police can find out who he is. you know that eerie feeling that somebody's watching you? in this case, it was more than a hunch. a peeping tom caught on tape eyes right up to the window of a woman's bedroom. >> to all of a sudden realize that there's been someone watching you and you don't know for how long, it's incredibly scary. >> reporter: the victim doesn't feel safe sharing her identity with the peeping tom still on the loose. >> he seems to know when i'm home and when i'm not. the incident when we caught him on camera, i had literally just got home maybe ten minutes before. >> reporter: she and her neighbors say they started noticing strange things around their bright neighborhood a few months ago. >> i heard little noises. but when i would look, it was like houdini. he'd be gone. >> reporter: she thinks her

boyfriend even saw him one night. a man saying he was looking for his puppy. that's when they decided to set up cameras. when she was in the shower feet away, this is what those cameras caught. >> and i saw that it was a face. it was instantly i wanted to throw up. and it was a moment of panic. >> reporter: with no one in the bedroom, the man leaves. but not before giving the camera a clear view. a picture his victims hope people will share on social media and that someone will recognize. >> this creep, this man took that from me, the sense of home i had in my apartment. i don't know if i could get that feeling back, that sense of security. i do want to go home. i miss being home. i miss sleeping in my own bed. >> reporter: police have includ increased patrols in the area. by the way, this wasn't a sophisticated surveillance system.

we are back now at 7:43 with what the faa says is a reoccurring problem in this country. the illegal use of drones. they say they could be jeopardizing your safety every time you fly. and this morning there's a new concern. terry sanders has the story this morning. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. i'm in florida where marksmen like to take aim at these. they're called clay pigeons. but now there's a new twist on this sport where folks are taking aim on drones could be illegal. old school skeet shooting meets new world drones. but the faa says these shooted drone gatherings are illegal. an investigate came badge in hand who asked we not identify him as he was there to shut them

down. >> the faa rules that you cannot use drones in a commercial process. >> reporter: a commercial process because shooters are charged a fee to participate. but organizers say the faa is overstepping its authority. >> it's a form of intimidation. it's bullying. it's trying to bluff people with sternly worded letters and the occasional fine to try to enforce something that they don't have the right to enforce. >> reporter: in march of this year, a federal judge did rule there was no enforceable faa rule on low altitude drones. >> aren't they just toys with batteries? >> they're not illegal drones in your mind? >> absolutely not. >> reporter: shooting at drones that cost $45 to rebuild continues. at a nearby airstrip, pilots said they had no idea drones were aloft much less that anyone was shooting guns skyward. >> it concerns us because you

lot of celebrities dream of writing, they fantasize about writing and don't have the guts to write. where'd you find the guts? >> you know, i spent my life in sports and entertainment and news and then in the entertainment side really kind of helping destroy people. i mean, that's what those shows were about. you die by drugs or get caught with drugs, that's the only time we brought up recovery. and so i thought if i'm going to write about -- by the way, i rip nobody more than myself in the book. >> you rip other people though. you're tough on coworkers. >> i am. and sometimes coworkers can be tough. but i -- yeah. you know, i wrote the book so people could know that there's a way out. even for me. >> let's get to the elephant in the room. the voice mail, the scandal that brought you to a standstill. it was all about let's go get some drugs and hookers and whatever. you were extremely drunk when

awhile. >> up until around 11:00. >> then you go home and i stay out. and i got fascinated in chicago. but the drinking scene in the news business is always good. just because you have a few drinks doesn't mean you're an alcoholic. one for me was not too many and a thousand was not enough. >> and it seemed it started with the music scene but then your fame, the money, the access to the parties and celebrities fueled it. you talk about spiraling downward. you're in an l.a. lakers game one night and you run into your good friend and mine maria shriver and she screamed at you. >> she did. mariah carey once grabbed me and said enough. i was down to 130 pounds. she said enough, enough. and maria who had been through this in her own family said you've got to take care of this. i had a lot of people on my side and still do. but the message is real. i had lunch the other day and

was told there's a solution to all of this. it's the only disease that people don't admit they have. >> four rehabs you mentioned. the last one at hazelton which is where robin williams went before his death. what worked the last time that didn't happen in the first three times? >> first time i didn't listen. helicopters all over the place and howard stern playing the voice mail. second time was about getting a suntan at betty ford. third time i didn't care. but the fourth time -- when i got there i was almost dead. i mean, i almost flatlined on my own property in nantucket. i drank a lot that day. and they said, look, you're not going to live. unless you change your life and take a good look at yourself, you're not going to live. that's what i did. >> in the midst of your drinking and you write openly about this. you left your wife. and you say you're haunted by the guilt. and your son was there too. broke his heart. you're haunted by that decision

found elevated levels of pcb, toxic chemicals often used in the window caulking of older schools. it can leech into dirt, dust, and air and can over time can cause cancer and immune system problems. >> pcb disrupted the function of hormones in our bodies. especially thyroid hormones. they can cause inability for children to perform well in school. >> reporter: when malibu teachers had worries about their health, they tested in ten random classrooms. four came back over the federal limit for pcbs. did you just assume the district and/or your school would say let us get right on that, we want to clear it up. don't worry. >> absolutely. >> reporter: and the district says it is. the school is planning to remove the caulking in those four

rooms. and do periodic monitoring of air and dust for pcbs in every classroom. it says so far tests show no elevated levels. but many parents feel that's not enough. >> the problem is for me is that they haven't tested the source. >> reporter: so the malibu school district says we did test the air and the dust in the other classrooms and we're good. we're going to take out the caulking in the four. everything else is safe. let's go to school. >> right. and i think that air testing is a great piece of the puzzle. unless they're testing every day, how do i know every day it's safe for my kid? >> reporter: some experts say while air and dust testing is a good way to determine pcb exposure, levels can vary week to week depending on conditions. >> in the short-term it may be appropriate to do monitoring, but in the long-term, schools need to eradicate the pcbs from these building materials. >> reporter: and it's not just in malibu.

how to handle pcbs has become a national controversy for schools. under federal law, they're not required to test for pcbs at all. >> why wasn't there follow-up testing done -- >> reporter: at a rally last week crawford offered to pay herself for all the caulk testing at malibu high. >> i look ten years down the line. what if my kid, god forbid, had a problem? how could i live with myself if i knew that it was a possibility and i still sent them to school there? >> reporter: in a statement the school says ensuring our students are safe and healthy is the first priority. and using federal epa standards, our schools are safe for students and employees. and the epa agreed. saying the district's plan address this human exposure pathway of greatest concern. namely air, dust, and soil. and until those tests show a problem, epa does not recommend additional testing of caulk.

a very good morning to you. it is 8:26. i'm laura garcia-cannon. the ntsb now on the way to examine the wreckage of a small plane that crashed and exploded on impact overnight near novato. the pilot on board died. the faa says the single engine plane was flying from brookings, oregon, to san carlos when it started having engine problems. the pilot was trying to make an emergency landing when that crash happened. let's check that morning commute now with mike. how's it looking? >> we have oakland, which typically has traffic. and we look at it, it has traffic adds typical. northbound 880 slows around the call skpeoliseum and tonight th playing. we see a slow drive from san leandro all the way up towards the area, about 45 miles per hour on average.
