14th and september 17th. new video in this morning, inside of levi stadium, bird's eye look where crews are hard at work laying new sod on the field. this is of course a live image you're look at. this is going on right now. crews had to rip out most of the grass yesterday after it got torn up during last monday's preseason game. bob redell is at levi stadium this morning. the big question, is that field going to be ready, it's hard to believe in time for sunday's game. >> reporter: but the 49ers are confident that will be the case. now a source within the city of santa clara, sam and laura, terms us that the sprob not with the grass itself, but rather the sand surface underneath. the 49ers have not said what if anything they're going to do to correct the sand problem just that they will be ready for sunday's preseason game. now if you look live from the chopper view over levi stadium, you could see there's not much field there. there's a lot of that sand, then you have these lines of sod. they have a lot of work to do. they start within the past hour
6:15 am
or so of installing new sod. there's five truckloads of sod that pulled up here early this morning. they are now in the pros of rerolling out the grass, laying it down. one of the drivers tell us us of the sod trucks that this is bandara bermuda blend of grass. it's grass that the 49ers chose officially because of its durability and low water needs. >> it has the ability to recover a little bit quicker. it keeps its color greener longer into the season, and it's lateral grow so that it makes that network where the cleat plants in holds up nicely without wear traffic. >> reporter: that's the 49ers head grounds keeper when we spoke to him months ago about four months ago after the initial installation of the sod. but you can see the grass hasn't held up so far. you can see the team tore up a huge section of the field yesterday, talking about the organization having to take out
6:16 am
a big section yesterday morning so that the new sod could be installed this morning. now the problem with the playing surface was very evident during the 49ers open practice wednesday afternoon. pieces of the turf came up, a couple players got caught up in the divot, it was so bad that coach harbaugh moved the practice to the training field out of fear that his players could get hurt. again, source within the city blames the sand for the sod not properly taking root over the past four months. the team says they will have the field ready for sunday's game which is only 48 hours away. and here we are friday morning, and you've got half of levi stadium, it's just dirt. it's just sand. but they are confident that they are going to have this ready again in just over 48 hours from now. reporting live here in levi stadium in santa clara, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> that's amazing because if the problem is with the field itself, with the sand, you could have the continues, same continuing problems. >> needless to say, they have their work cut out for them.
6:17 am
>> counting down the days until the big regular season home opener. that game just over three weeks, 23 days away to be exact. 49ers welcomed the chicago bears. and you can catch it all right here on sunday night football on september 14th. the storied history of a bay area high school football team hits theaters nationwide this morning. >> don't let a game define who you are, but the way you live your lives through that. >> that speech came after delasalle had fits 151 consecutive game winning streak snapped. it highlights what led up to the game for the concord high schoolers including the death of clarence kelly. also forms on the head football coach that led that team during the 12 year winning streak. he's played by jim cavisil. >> reporter: hardest part of playing him is he's alive. you know, you can play jesus,

getting those warmer than average water temperatures, 60 to 65 degrees just offshore. typically we're in the upper 40s to low 50s in the water this time of year. that's unusual. and looks like that's going to hold up through next week as well. now when it comes to your temperatures, staying put all across the board by the end of next week, that's where we're going crank up the heat just a touch. still no extremes in the forecast, we're not talking about records, and i think this month subpoena going to go down as cooler than average. speaking of which, here's mike inouye. >> all right. thank you, christina. i'm going to keep that and show the kids later when they think, well they think i'm not cool. these are the metering lights, they have this backup here and they send everybody loose on the bay bridge. the crash just past there cleared from the roadway as well. you see the backup here and at the toll plaza itself. look at the maps, nothing unusual for the friday easy drive out of the maize and just a little slowing on the approach.

do not have a playing surface. you're looking at a live shot inside levi stadium where about half the field has been toorn out. you can see there are grounds keepers in there right now. what they're doing is they're rolling out new sod that we saw about five truckloads of new sod being delivered here this morning. and based on our conversation with one of the delivery truck drivers, the team will be reinstalling the same kind of sod, it's a strain of grass that the team has chosen becaused it needs lelsz water and can handle the rigger was an snvl game -- nfl game. yesterday the organization tore up the huge section of the original sod. we're talking about a section that's roughly 100 yards long by maybe 25 to 30 yards wide. a very large chunk of the field taken out because of problems with the playing surface. these are problems that became apparent during wednesday's open practice with when a couple players slipped during maneuvers as pieces of the field came up. there were divots. apparently the sod hadn't taken
6:57 am
properly, taken root yet, even though it was planted about four months ago. a source tells us that the grass isn't the problem, it's the sand surface underneath. now given that the original sod did not take root over that four month time period, it's not clear why the team thinks the new sod will take root in time for sunday's game which again is only 48 hours away. and here they are within the past couple of hours startsing to reinstall the middle section of the field. again, they did an initial install about four months ago, it did take root, but apparently not properly because you had divots, you will parts of it coming up. now they're trying it again and the team again expressing confidence that this field will be ready for sunday's preseason game. reporting live here at levi stadium in santa clara, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> wow, if they can pull that off. i have a lawn they can work on. thanks a lot, bob. >> as you mentioned, it's a systemic issue with the grass.
