5:00 am
and we're going to see a murky overcast start to your day, but then the clouds will give away to a gorgeous afternoon. a lot of people headed outdoors for this weekend, afterall, it's a holiday weekend. i'll have the forecast for that coming up in moments. and we'll focus on the bay bridge for two incidents now. one getting into san francisco, the latest as you head out of the city as well. and looking live at downtown san jose there and it is a nice mild start to the day, it is tuesday, august 26th, and this is "today in the bay." from nbc bay area, this is "today in the bay." good morning, and thanks for joining us, i'm kris sanchez in for laura this morning. >> and i'm sam brock. we have breaking news to tell you about this morning, nearly two dozen people are out of their homes in san francisco after a fire at an auto repair shop. that is where we find derek shore live from balboa park, derek, i understand this spread
5:01 am
and wreaked havoc for folks living there. >> reporter: yeah, wet just got updated -- we just got updated numbers. 23 residents were displaced. that was seven homes, two dogs without a home this morning. i'm going to step out of the way. firefighters say they received a call just after midnight about 12:30. heavy smoke and flames here at this auto body shop at that repair shop, the flames quickly spread to a nearby apartment building as well as a nightclub. luckily, everyone was able to get out safely. >> we saw the police officer and that's it. >> no damage appears to be in and around the repair facility. and that's where we're conducting specifically our investigation at this time. >> reporter: and that is exactly where firefighters say they believe this fire started. at least preliminarily. tlefs a lot of combustibles,
5:02 am
obviously items in a repair shop that could be quite problem if they were to ignite. and that is why they were so corn concern and called this a three alarm fire. at this point, the red cross has stepped in to help those displaced residents, two docks, 23 people as we come back out here live. firefighters have cleared the way here both on san jose and ocean avenues making way for the morning commute. muni lines in the area have not been affected. we're live in san francisco, i'm derek shore, "today in the bay." >> at least a good of bit news there on the public trngs, thank you, derek. more now on the coverage of the south napa earthquake. the young teenager crushed by a fireplace in sunday's quake is doing better in the hospital this morning. 13-year-old nicholas tim season listed -- nicholas dil seasylan critical condition. he fractured his pelvis. he was sleeping on a mattress on the floor while his best friend slept on the couch.
5:03 am
her nephew managed to turn himself around and crawl through the door allowing him to escape without any injuries to his head. his best friend recalled those scary moments. >> he starts yelling my name. and then i yelled his. and then i saw the brix coming down on him. >> it was a shock to see. i mean, it's a blessing he's so young and was able to move so fast. >> after the quake, dylan underwent ten hours of surgery. doctors say he will walk again. but he does have a long road to recovery. piles of furniture, pieces of walls, trash, and once treasured belongings all piled up high outside napa schools and parks. people have been picking up since sunday's quake and many have much more work ahead of them today. let's check in with "today in the bay's" bob redell who is live in napa, and bob, i was out there yesterday as well, i saw
5:04 am
some signs of progress. what are you seeing? >> reporter: well, i've got to tell you, there is definitely a lot of debris outside napa union high school. one of the 12 dez flated drop off sites for people who lost items during the quake. and you can see, this is beyond the dumpster, the single dumpster. looks like you have debris from, what is that old wood from the inside of maybe an old house. you've got furniture, television sets, a toilet, but then when you also look at some of the items, you have mattresses, chairs in good condition. you have to wonder if some people are just taking advantage of the situation, throwing away things that weren't damaged during the earthquake, but something they've wanted to get rid of and didn't want to have to deal with the hassle of taking it to the dump. this is something the city will do to help out its citizens. napa valley public schools are closed for a second day today. which is one why reason -- reason why the parking lot is
5:05 am
empty today. there are still cloegsd locations so the officials can to inspect them for damage. now the napa boys and girls club will be open so parents who have to work can drop off their kids there. the school closures do impact 18,000 students. the coombs street pith street is close -- remains closed. 70 buildings in napa are red tagged and more than 200 buildings are yellow tagged. red tag means no entry, yellow tag means moderate damage, limited entry. unless people go in there and clean up glass and that sort of thing. then they have to get an engineer or to give them final clearance to come back in. most of the destruction as we've seen is in the downtown napa area where all the historical structures are. where they have set up chain link fences around those locations so that people don't get too close because there are still bits of that structure
5:06 am
stone, stonework, brickwork even a part of a roof that are in danger of collapse. again, if you have debris that was damaged, trashed during that earthquake, which happened just over 48 hours ago. the city has the 12 drop off sites here being one at the napa union valley high school. reporting live here in napa, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thanks bob, ifrs gladded to see -- i was gladded to see the fence -- glad to see the fence going up, people were getting too close. >> ab slusolutabsolutely. the earthquake was not the big one, the scientists say a 6.0 is considered a moderate quake, however, they say there is a 5 to 10% chance of an aftershock of a 6.0 or higher in the next seven days, and a 16% changes of a magnitude 3.5 in the next week. >> this is 6.0 certainly doesn't fit the e category of the large
5:07 am
one. what is surprising is that its taken 25 years to have a magnitude six or comparable in the bay area. >> scientists best guess where the big one could acur senior along the hayward fault line. there is a 3% chance there, butd scientists also say that based on the faults history, it is overdue as well. scary words there are. the quake of course a powerful reminder to be repaired. at an earthquake supply store in san rafael yesterday, people were stocking up on emergency supplies. one woman was there to pick up a kit for her son, his preschool requires each child to have a emergency prepared kit they keep with them. getting it gives her a peace of mind. >> if i can't get to my son in an emergency, at least they have everything that they need to take care of him. in case the big one hits. >> experts suggest in addition to keeping supplies in your
5:08 am
house, keep some in your car too. that includes things like food, water, flashlight, and even a survival whistle. napa wineries with leaning on each other right now in the quake of this devastating earthquake. this new video shows just some of the damage that wineries in napa are still discovering today, days after the initial quake. yesterday, many wineries reopen for business. even as more reports of damage were flowing in. but it's a critical time for them, the peak of the harvest season when the tourists roll in. yesterday the nonprofit trade association, napa valley visitor ins launched a programs to help each other get through the crucial time. on the program, wineries can ask for help or they can offer. >> a lot of barrels were damaged, and we can replace some of those. the barrels where are racks were steroid, all bent up. equipment such as forklifts. >> it's beautiful to see that they are more than happy to help out their competitor. >> yeah, communities coming together in times of crisis
5:09 am
always see emboldening. napa valley people say other wineries are offering storage space and equipment. >> bob redell of course has live reports. he will continue to do so on the clean up efforts all morning long. any time we're not on air, you can check out our website, nbcbayarea.com and just search napa earthquakes. >> harvest parties put on hold so they could help theirselveses and each other. >> that's great to see everybody come together, because obviously the higher purpose here and some nice weather to help folks in the recovery would be good as well. christina, how are things looking? >> good, especially up in wine country, spoiled again with the below average temperatures. it'll be nice day up there. 63 to start in oakland. 52349 san carlos, and 58 degrees in san jose. so, as we get into this afternoon, temperatures are going to be really comfortable, and then that change kicks in by
5:10 am
tomorrow. so let's dive right into your forecast. on shore flow is going to be strong for today and for us, that means we're going to get the cool westerly breeze. you can open up the windows in your home and probably don't need the ac today. heat surges tomorrow and thursday. high pressure builds, and for us, we're going to see near 90 degree readings all across the valley spots. then as we head throughout the end of the week, take a look at this the, the rem nanlts of what is now -- remnants of hurricane marie coming up to the north and potentially getting sucked into our westerly flow. for us, few subtropical showers. right now the best chance looks like saturday into sunday and in the south bay within we could see thunderstorms. this is what we're watching right now. it does look like this is still quite a way's away from the bay area, but that could change. we're keeping an eye on that for you. overall, it'll feel more muggy around here starting tomorrow. 828 degrees in the south bay for today. enjoy that. we're going to hit a comfortable
5:11 am
reading out there in the north bay between 85 to 87 degrees. peninsula looking comfortable around 72 for you. and yeah, out in the tri-valley, not too hot, warm sunshine, 87. we'll talk about your weekend coming up. first traffic tuesday, a lot of kids back in school, here's mike and the drive. some of the bigger kids, we'll talk about them in a second. west 80, stlfs a stall blooking the slow lane. so just watch that, that is not yet cleared from the chp report. getting over from san francisco, heading over towards treasure island. let's show you on the maps. we're talking about a disabled vehicle. and they didn't report seeing anything, they have cleared the area. we'll track that anyway. jiebts play tonight, that's one issue you're going want to the watch post work traffic through the area. derek shore koint continues his -- continues his report over here. overnight fire, we had disruption to the traffic flow, but all lanes have cleared.

5:13 am
5:14 am
you're watching "today in the bay." welcome back.
5:15 am
it is 5:14 now. now when it comes to crime rates in san jose, there is good news and there's bad news. we'll start with good news of course in the first six months of this year. there were fewer serious crimes reported compared to the first six months of last year. according to a new report, the number of homicides dropped dramatically this year compared to last year down almost 21%. but reports of rape and robberies jumped up by 18% and 7% respectively. so even with fewer murders, total violent crimes rose by almost 4%. meanwhile, serious crimes including murder, rape, robbery, and assault, decreased overall by 9%. more than two million bean bag chairs were recalled following the deaths two of kids. the zirps on the chairs can be opened by children that can crawl inside, get trapped and suffocate and choked. that happened to a 13-year-old boy from texas and three-year-old child, girl if from kentucky.
5:16 am
they are made by ace bio and told by several stores including walmart and online at amazon.com. even if you have a different brand of bean bag chairs been you should make shoor your kids cannot unzip them. bill aimed at fighting cell phone theft is now law. governor brown signed a bill requiring cell phone makers to install kill switches begins in july of next year. the kill switch allows the owner to remotely disable it. it is meant to deter thieves by turning stolen cell phones into nothing more than a brick. >> going to get into the head of the perpetrator that is not worth his time, trouble, or risk, because the item he's thinking of steals will be worthless. >> more than three million americans had smart phones stolen last year. nearly double the thefts in 2011. scott mcgrew points out, the world's most important phone maker has it. >> that's right, kris. the newest iphones have the feature, the ability to disable the phone remote lil as mark
5:17 am
points out, that not beginning to stop it from getting stolen, but it will make it useless if it is stolen. well the tech world is abuzz over the sale of twitch to amazon. it is the biggest deal amazon ever made. about a bell dollars. twitch is a video system allowing people to broadcast their video games for other people to watch as they spectator sport. twitch was started by this guy. you may remember him from justin tv where he broadcast his life over the internet. what started as a web cam attached to his hat became a billion dollar company twitch, only in san francisco. well speaking of big booming markets, with the s&p 500 crossed 2,000 for the first time monday. though it closed slightly lower than that point. lots of good data today, including consumer sentiment could help push it back over the bench mart. the nasdaq once again at a 14 and a half year high. that's half a year, six months,
5:18 am
separates now from the dot-com boom and nasdaq 5,000. do you remember that? the pen kl of the go, go 90s and we are darn close. kris, you'll remember, we have government go 90s and that was followed by the oh my god, what have you defense attorney 2,000ss. >> for a billion dollars. >> the world's gone mad. thank you very much. >> enjoy the wealth while it's here and plan for the future. >> put turned your ma stress. 5:18 now on your tuesday morning, i remember when twitching used to be some sort of weird, spastic motion, now it's watching people play video games. we can watch you right now, tell us all about what's going on on the weather front. >> and later on, i'm going to try to get some twitch, i play zelda parking lot of my day, every day devoted to playing it. and i did a really cool move yesterday, spin attack, rolled into a tree and a roof if i fell out. you probably know that sound if you're a geek, if you don't,
5:19 am
you're cool. we have negative four in livermore. you're probably wondering what does that mean? that's the temperature difference between 24 hours ago and now. so overall, i want to start with today because it's starting to feel more like fall out there. that's right, the unofficial kick off of fall arrives on monday. the official start is until the 21st of september. but, it's going to start to feel more like fall as we head into the next couple of weeks. days are getting shorter, and yeah starting to see some of the leaves falling off. 58 degrees in santa rosa, 60 in san francisco, and 58 degrees to kick off dmat san jose. so i want to start with a live picture of emeryville. this is where we're really going to watch for the weather story of the day. the low clouds are going to start to settle in throughout the next couple of hours. by around 7:00 a.m., you're not going to see the top towers here of the bay bridge because that fog is moving in quick. you can see that here in san francisco. the fog is going to be held back by the santa cruz mountains, so
5:20 am
overall, well westerly flow today to keep the ocean air coming in and the temperatures nice and comfortable. we have this area of low pressure, its been kind of sitting here and will continue to do so throughout the next 24 hours. here it is, you can see that counterclockwise wrap, it's driving in the the cool ocean air. the breeze is going to build in this afternoon. >> you can probably get by, just about everywhere, you might need it in the tri-valley for today. and in places up in the north bay. overall temperatures work like this, 78 degrees on the east shore. 87 not a bad day in the north bay, but still a little on the warm side. warming up more towards the warm section. bringing a shower chance this weekend. we'll show you what's bringing in that shower chance coming up. first though, here's mike and your drive. looking here towards 580 westbound. look at all these cars.
5:21 am
you know what, for folks who drive this area, for me who looks at it, it's a standard flow. tuesday, expect of a heavier volume. although we have slowing developing down below 60 miles per hour through dublin out of livermore, back here there's a reason for a lighter flow. there's a disabled vehicle around greenville and over there at the altamont pass off of grantline road. there's a crash further back for folks heading to 580. once you get into livermore, it's a smoother drive. the rest of the bay, there's a look at your drive and no big surprises. live shots though, al low alto, live camera shot northbound here, university of past willow and just around the area, reports of a car fire somewhere around the southbound side around willow, i scanned the camera and i moved it up in the area. we don't see smoke or lanes blocked. i'll continue to track that. we'll get more information as c hosni mubarak heads through the area. another live look at 101 across the golden gate bridge, smooth drive southbound, much more
5:22 am
traffic than about a half hour ago. i was concerned it was so light, there's no disruption on either side of the bridge, and there's what we expect to see coming into and out of the north bay. we had the cash lanes off to the right, couple of cars waiting there. left side will start the same thing. increasing in volume, and down the east shore freeway, we had an earlier fender bender, sounds like everything's over to the shoulder in san pablo. should have a smooth drive, right now i'll continue to follow that closely, back to you. >> thank you, mike. mexico's president is the in california today on a two-day visit to talk about immigration. he was welcomed by governor brown yesterday. today, governor brown will be playing host at a luncheon in his honor if he sacramento. he will then address the legislature at the state capitol. yesterday, mexico's president talked about the need for u.s. immigration reform and said those who reject devotion here in the country will be proven wrong. hispanics currently make up the largest of any racial or ethnic

is "today in the bay." good morning, thanks for joiningings us -- joining us, i'm sam brock. >> and i'm kris sanchez in for laura garcia-cannon. fire crews on the scene from an overnight fire in san francisco. the fire spread to two apartment buildings. "today in the bay's" derek shore is live near balboa park with the latest. derek, you were able to get firsthand looks at some of the damage there, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, firefighters are still on the scene. it appears to be a mop-up situation at this hour. we were able to look inside. you can see this apartment building right behind me, and under it is a night cluck as we look at the video, you can see a lot of water filling that nightclub. firefighters were in there trying their best to mop it all up, of course they had to use a lot of water in this fire. they say they got the call after
5:32 am
midnight around 12:30, arriving to find heavy smoke and flames which quickly spread in an autobody repair shop or autoshop just next door. the flames spread to the apartment building and the nightclub, and they were forced to knock it down quickly raising this fire to a three alarm. luckily everyone was able to get out safely. the next step of course is the clean up and the question is how it all started. >> there was a lot of combustibles. all of that will be looked out to rule out anything suspicious. it's under investigation. it's preliminary. >> reporter: as we come out here live. you can see a restoration company showed up here to assist the fire department with the their clean up. we saw the owner who owned the building, the apartment building above, she was obviously very distraught to see her property in such shambles.
5:33 am
23 people have been displaced by the fire. seven families as we're told, and two dogs all being assisted at this hour by the red cross. we're live in san francisco, i'm derek shore, "today in the bay." >> all right. thank you very much, derek. also new morning, just a couple of hours ago, people living in a peninsula neighborhood were finally allowed to return home after police arrested a suspect who barricade himself inside an apartment building with a knife. around 9:00 last night, san mateo police evacuated the area. the people living in the apartment complex were told to shelter in place. police say the suspect was acting erratically before he ran into the building. several hours later, at about 1:00 this morning, police finally arrested that man, and he is a suspect in an assault with a deadly weapon pa that happened on sunday in the same area. this all happened south of highway 92, sam. kris now to the continued coverage of the south napa earthquake. napa valley public schools are

5:35 am
occurred during the earthquake. >> reporter: and also perhaps people taking advantage of the situation. good morning to you there, sam. this is outside of napa union high school. one of 12 designated drop off sites that the city has set up the dumpsters. you can see the dumpsters are not enough to contain what people are actually dropping did off. this is the remains a of it looks like a concrete fence that someone dropped off, we've seen a lot of flat screen tvs, furniture, then we're also seeing items that clearly have not been damaged, but are old and it seems to us that there are people who just didn't want to take it to the dump, so they're taking advantage of this situation to get rid of things they've been wanting to get rid of, but didn't have the opportunity until this happened on sunday morning. we're talking about the earthquake. just over 48 hours ago. now across town, at the napa vel mobile home park, this is where four homes burned to the ground and where natural gas line fires daked more. few people are crossing their

fingers, hoping, praying that today is the day they get water again. the water line that serves the community ruptured during the shaker leaving residents without water and natural gas ever since. to make due, they've grabbed buckets of water to the swimming pool just to flush the toilets. >> the toilets get a little ripe after a while. so yeah, we're using it for toilet water. >> reporter: and in the meantime, no word on when the natural gas lsh tushed back on. salvation army has been kind enough, they have a canteen set up located inside the napa valley mobile home park. that's where they're providing three meals a day for people until they can get their lives back up and running. again, you've got 12 drop off sites at schools and parks. this one being at napa union high school. clearly the city, i don't know if you can read it, but on the sign, it says earthquake debris. by our estimate, looking at some
5:37 am
of the items dropped off here, does not seem like everyone's following that rule. reporting live in napa, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> maybe everybody didn't get the memo, bob, swimming in debris up to his shoulders, thank you so much. north bay churches were also damaged and that's affecting more than just the worshippers there. scott mcgrew continues our coverage now, scott the quake means some people are going to have to go hungry. >> reporter: kris, there's a church that serves free lunches and it is in danger of collapsing. the first baptist church hands out hot heel meals every day. its been doing so for nearly # 00 years. as late as yesterday, everything was normal. there was such a thing as a free lunch. 171 people were fed, but then some saw bricks up high. the damage was so serious it red tagged the building even shut down near highway 29 just in case that church collapses. >> we had a lot of damage in our
