investigators sifting through wreckage. debris is still piling up all over the county. >> this morning we have team coverage. bob redell checking in with agencies helping to team up and help victims. let's start with nanette miranda who joins us live at napa high school where classes are starting back up today. we hear an earthquake drill is the first thing on the lesson plan. >> reporter: of course, anybody can use a refresher course at this point. i want to point out that the debris here at napa high school has mostly been cleared. take a look behind me, crews are working on the very last pile over there with the bulldozer running. this is certainly a lot less, a lot fewer piles than what we saw yesterday when there were piles of this stuff along the parking lot. since this is off to the side it appears napa high will reopen as planned. napa high had been a dump site for quake victims, many residents lost personal items like furniture, electronics,

things outside their homes. all of it destroyed beyond repair ace result of sunday's shaker there are dump sites throughout the city of napa, the city says, using napa high as a site was probably a mistake since classes are set to resume today. all but one napa unified campus will resume classes. everywhere else is safe. >> some of the minor repairs include replacing windows that have broken, some cabinets have fallen that need to be fastened to the walls. there are some cracks, they're not structural or dangerous cracks but cracks in sidewalks and things like that. >> reporter: so the first thing students, as we mentioned, sam, will participate in earthquake drills today. as i mentioned, it's a refresher clasp they'll be practicing taking cover and evacuating in

case of additional aftershocks. only school left not open today is stone bridge charter school. they will be back in session next week. they found significant cracks in the walls and the sidewalks there. live in napa, nanette miranda for "today in the bay." >> debris-filled parking lot there. thank you. bob redell off to napa with a look at relief efforts that are under way. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning to you, laura. here in the downtown area, you can see some of the most significant, visual damage from sunday's 6.0 shaker, you can see historic structures made of brick and stone crumbled. those businesses will take a while to recover. you know it's the same situation for many homeowners who also had their lives turned upside down, like crystal, who moved into a red cross shelter. she found staying in her house was too stressful. all of her belongings were thrown about. yesterday's 3.9 aftershock, 24 hours ago, that tossed her bed about the room, that was her

final straw. she left home, doesn't know when she's going to return. there are others who are like her, red cross is serving several hundred people throughout the area and the salvation army, deployment of five canteen trucks. a sense of the demand, they serve 1000 hot meals on sunday. yesterday it was double that. 12-year-old joseph newhouse relying on their kindness and generosity of two pg&e workers who visited his home, he says he'll never forget. >> said, do you guys want anything from walmart? and i said, yes. and they bought me a remote control helicopter, like $50, and an ipod and a bunch of clothes. all of the clothes i'm wearing now is from them in approaching 400 people we've assisted throughout the community. we continue to do damage assessment to find out what communities are hit and needed. we found out there are opening a shelter in vallejo.

>> reporter: sunday's quake hit hard the napa valley mobile home park, several homes burned or damaged. we'll update you on how residents are coping there within the next hour. live here in downtown napa, bob redell, "today in the bay." we will have continuing coverage for you of the quake recovery all morning including a look at a large sinkhole that has opened up in one napa neighborhood. get updates on nbcbayarea.com. new this morning, overnight police cars filled the streets of normally quiet south bay neighborhood. investigators were called to west san jose just after 9:00 for a stabbing. this happened near the lawrence expressway and saratoga avenue. kris sanchez live in san jose where investigators are putting together exactly what happened. what do you know at this point? >> reporter: well, we know the parking lot was more crowded last night around 9:00 than it is this morning. let's show you the scene here. talking about the parking lot

that serves a large number of businesses here, lucky's supermarket with office max and other businesses. the police spokeswoman tells us the person stabbed here expected to survive. the violent crime comes one day after the department released statistics showing an uptick in total violent crime in the first six months this year. it's required to submit to the fbi total violent crimes increased by 4%, crimes like rape and robbery. driving that number down, though, fewer homicides, fell from 24 to 19 this year. overall, serious crimes fell by 9%, crimes that are felonies other than murder, rain, robbery, assault. the stabbing will count towards the figure for the second half of the year and specifically, for the stabbing, san jose does not have a suspect or a motive. kris sanchez, "today in the bay." 6:06.

time to check the forecast. as we take a live look outside. look at that, the sun is up, yet the lights still imlumnated on the bay bridge. >> that was a quick turnaround from 20 minutes ago when it was dark. now it's light out. >> it's funny you can't tell when the sun comes up in san francisco because we get so much fog. on clear mornings like this you see that. and we have a really warm day ahead for those spots that haven't had any fog so far this morning. let's start with that. actually, we're going to talk about aftershocks first, because it's more important than your forecast for today. it's easy on you. temperatures staying in the 80s to low 90s. this is something that's been on everybody's mind. i want to put your mind at ease a bit. over the last 12 hours, this is it, 2.0, 2.5 happened at 10:56 the last one. we had 3.0 about 12 hours ago.

today's top stories, 6:14. u.s. officials trying to verify information about death of an american man they believe fighting with isis in syria. investigators say they were aware douglas mcarthur mccain was in syria to fight with the militant group, blamed for beheading an american journalist. police in san jose looking for whoever stabbed a man near a shopping center near lawrence expressway in saratoga. the victim is expected to survive. since the ground shook, for the first time most students in napa will return to school. the first thing on the lesson plan, earthquake drills. spectors deemed nearly all campuses safe. some needed repairs like replacing broken windows or

fixing cracks in the sidewalk. uber admitting to something called operation slog. scott mcgrew joining us now. is what slog supposed to be? >> uber says operation slog is a program to educate people about the benefits of driving for uber. its competitor lyft says it's a i program to slow lyft down by encouraging independent contractors working for uber to call and cancel lyft rides. the news website says it has documents showing thousands of canceled rides, allegedly placed by u bechber contractors using r phones. uber says, yeah, it's called operation slog but that stands for supply long-term operations growth and never intended to slow lyft down. we are getting reports time warner cable is down nationwide, not just television, but

los angeles. she was arrested days later, trying to get past security again at l.a.x. >> one might say she's sneaky. new questions about a heroic act by a college football player, so he says, usc right now investigating a story told by senior cornerback josh shaw. earlier this week, shaw said he sprained both ankles after he jumped from a sick floor balcony to save his nephew from drowning inside of a pool. usc called shaw a hero initially but now the school's saying it received calls contradicting his story. shaw named team captain hours before he was hurt. >> new details about a young homeless man who else supreme courted miley cyrus to the vma. he has a warrant fought for his arrest. >> my name's jesse, i'm accepting this award on behalf of the 1.6 million run aways and holeless. >> 22-year-old jesse accepted an award on behalf of miley cyrus

ten minutes in santa rosa where we're getting sunshine. this is tiburon. taking a live look at tiburon. what i'm talking about when it comes to shallow marine layer, it's so shallow you can make out the golden gate bridge here in the distance now i want to take you to the golden gate bridge and show you what that looks like. you can see, clear from bottom to top. as we head throughout the day today, that's going to mean a warmer than average day. we have been getting spoiled with below average temperatures all month long. this is what we're working towards. sunrise time, 6:34, boom, nailed that current time. throughout the afternoon, sun and clouds at the coast. burning off, if we have anything out there. we do have a little bit of patchy cloud cover, especially sonoma, amarin county coastline, that will burn off 9:00, 10:00. abundant sunshine at the coast. this evening, sun will set at 7:49. highs today, 84 for the south bay, 82 on the peninsula.

and 70 degrees in san francisco with more changes coming your way for the weekend, including a chance for showers. we'll talk about that coming up. first let's check your drive. good morning, mike. >> good morning. toward fremont, live look southbound 880 with headlights past the truck scales and tesla and mission boulevard. volume start to increase here. look at the issue as we look the bay, nothing unusual except for the big slowing, we talked about, heading to and patting by that san mateo bridge, high way 92. we see relief as the crash at dakota and thornton cleared, we see traffic and the jam starting to clear and ease into traffic as it let loose toward the mission shot we just showed you. to the east, first, look at southbound 680 as well, approaching there was an earlier crash that made its way out of vernal. that's a little shift in the

into new video over night of a storm surge in southern california that flooded streets in seal beach, water cleared 2 1/2 foot wall and flooded ground floor apartments. orange county sent 23 firefighters and two bulldozers to clean up all of the damage. take a look at radar here. no flooding may be due to hurricane marie which is churning in the pacific 900 miles south of l.a.

christina loren has been following that storm. lifeguards have been on alert all week as hurricane brings big swells to the coastline in orange and l.a. counties. several beaches are already closed as a precaution. authorities in oregon do not suspect foul play in the drowning of a family of four. the family was having a picnic near a lake. on monday, the body of a 3-year-old boy found face-down in henry hag lake. bystanders couldn't revive him and investigators could not find his family until yesterday. divers found bodies of the mother, grandmother, uncle not far from where he was found. investigators think the family was swimming but not clear what happened next. new video taken, could reveal more about what happened that day. investigators say the instructor, charles vacca, teaching the 9-year-old how to shoot an uzi. they say after firing a single shot, the instructor turned the

"today in the bay's" kris sanchez live in san jose where investigators are put together the pieces. what do we know about what happened? >> reporter: well, good morning, sam. we can tell you the victim is expected to survive but it happened in a park lot bustling with people. just after 9:00 when some of the stores closed. some of the stores like lucky's grocery store stay open later than that. the scene last night, around 9:20 when it happened. police spokeswoman says the person stabbed is expected to survive. however, the violent crime comes one day after the department released statistics showing an uptick in violent crime in the first six months of the year compared to the same time lastier. according to the statistics, they're required to submit to the fbi total violence of crime

navato. highway 37 slower than previous weeks. we have seen this monday and tuesday. seems like more folks heading out of vallejo across 37 than up 121 to avoid napa because we hear about the activity. it's a couple of streets closed, mostly main street downtown napa, avoid the area if you see cleanup work in that portion of the bay. smooth drive toward the bay bridge toll plaza. unusual slowing southbound 880 from 238 blending in with backup because of the crash at decoto. clear for south 880 into the south bay. extra slow southbound 680. over in toward the sunol area, we have a crash early at the center divide. no other problems for the tri-valley. south bay with the build. northbound 101 slight build toward 68 on slower toward 880. send it back to you. this morning, napa still recovering after that big

magnitude 6 quake. hundred of buildings damaged. inspectors sifting through the wreckage. debr debris piling up over the county. >> bob redell checking in with the agencies, teaming up to help victims. let's start out with "today in the bay's" nanette miranda who joins us live at napa high school with classes finally starting back up today. and, we hear an earthquake drill is the very first thing on the lesson plan. >> reporter: well, i need a refresher course on what to to when an earthquake hits. knowing teenagers, napa high students are probably bummed that the piles of debris that littered their parking lot is mostly all clear. therefore, they have to go back to school today. crews worked all day and into the night to clear and haul away the trash. the crews are working on the very last pile right now. this is video shot within the last hour. the debris is from quake victims' homes,

itself. officials designated this as a dumping ground. city leaders later acknowledges the location was a bad idea because classes are scheduled to resume today. all but one school in the napa unified school district except stone bridge charter school is back in session after inspectors deemed them safe. >> one of the first things our teachers will be doing is going through earthquake drills to remind students and practice the normal procedures, if there were a strong aftershock. >> reporter: here's the last pile. again, even if this is -- this pile isn't clears in the next few minutes, it is far enough to the side it won't interfere with classes resuming today. elementary and middle schools are scheduled to have a shortened day today. high school students have a full day. nanette miranda, for "today in the bay." we did mention that bob redell is also in napa this

morning. it's been a busy last couple of days for him. he's been on the ground level looking at relief efforts. what do you have this morning? >> reporter: good morning to you, sam, laura. based on what we've heard from the city and a private contractor, it's going to be weeks, possibly months, before these buildings are fixed here in the immediate downtown area. some might have to come down. just over 100 buildings that have been red tagged, another 500 yellow tagged and over 100 water lines need fixed. water and power is on at napa valley mobile home park. residents waiting on natural gasp recall it was a gas line rupture after sunday's 6.0 quake that burned and destroyed several home there's. many other homes yellow or red tagged because of structural damage from the shaking. last night that community met to figure out how to move forward. most residents looking for information how to rebuild. questions about insurance, contractors, and of course security. all of those issues leaving
