jihadist killed earlier this week in syria. u.s. believes as many as 100 americans may have joined the islamic state and are concerned they could get radicalized, trained, and come back to the united states. now coming up in 30 minutes. nbc si tracy pots will have a live report into that reported killing and the late ers on attempts to free another american held captive in syria. downtown san jose may feel safe they are morning after police took down a violent gang that targeted innocent people. "today in the bay's" reporter joins us live from downtown san jose this morning with a story that you will see only on increase bay area, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, vicky. there have been a lot of victims of assault and robbery this year alone in downtown san jose. you may recall a few months ago, we reported about the takedown of a crew that police dubbed spangish language for snot nosed kid. the suspects were between the ages of 11 and 17.

they would walk up to unsuspecting people in the downtown area and in the words of police, deliver a knockout punch. the suspects would then rob the victim. police arrested nine of the gang, but the violent assaults continued. and the mo was the same, people were being sucker punched as they walked through the downtown. the midnight shift began keeping a more vigilant eye own were able to catch the suspects after one of those violent robberies. this crew called itself the squad. it was four males, both adults and juveniles and for weeks, they wreaked havoc on innocent bystanders. >> come from behind or the side, just vicious, vicious blows. and once they're down on the ground, the assault continues. one individual is continuing the assault, whether it's hands or feet, and the others are rummaging through pockets and removing all the personal items from the victim. >> reporter: police ask people to walk in groups and keep a

vigilant eye so you don't become a victim in case there are other crews out there. police say they will do their part, but this takedown of the squad was done not by ab specialized unit, but by the beat officers asienledded to the downtown area. live in downtown san jose, "today in the bay." >> thank you. turning now to the 6.0 earthquake in south napa, we're learning that damage may be worse than we first thought. nannette miranda live in napa, nannette, the city hopes the tourists will still come despite all the damage. >> reporter: that's right, many doors are open despite what people are seeing. except for this business behind me. this is a multiwinery tasting room. as you can see, it suffered damage, lots of bricks and stones have fallen, but a sign outside says we're down, but not out. and that's the message

businesses want to get out that tourists should still come and enjoy the region. businesses are worried that with the widely circulated images of fallen buildings and toppled wine barrels that the images could encourage people to avoid the area. visitors spend more than $700 million a year when they're here. so locals hope they still come because tourists money will help with earthquake recovery. >> a lot of places are open and not everything's closed. we're having napa valley wine fun and good times. come on down, we're still going. >> reporter: city the of napa has new numbers released yesterday. initial estimates are $300 million in damage that's not including public buildings and infrastructure like water lines. 632 structures have been tagged so far. of those 116 were red tagged. the rest yellow tagged. and more than 40 aftershocks rattled the napa area yesterday.

now that $300 million price tag in terms of damages are just initial estimates. it's estimated that it could be as high as a billion dollars when it's all said and done. live in napa, nannette miranda for "today in the bay." >> thank you. breaking news now out of the black rock desert. a woman died this morning at burning man's festival. according to the festival's blog, the woman died after falling under a bus. that bus was carrying passengers at the time. the woman has not been identified and right now it is not clear what made her fall, but organizers of the burning manifest value say they are now working with the sheriff's office. they will be providing more information and we'll bring it to you when it becomes available. also happening now, southern california bracing for another day of strong surf. this is new video taken overnight at seal beach where life guards reported waves around 15 feet high. yesterday, the waves turned dangerous. this is the video of a lifeguard rescuing a 60-year-old man who

could not make it out of the water on his own. the high surf warning is in effect again today, but the waves should calm down by tomorrow. time now to check on your forecast, first a live look at sunol, little misty out there. time is 6:06, we'll bring in meteorologist christina loren, good morning, christina. >> good morning vicky, scott, everybody at home. little fog in sunol bodes well for a cool start to the day. san jose we don't have much cloud cover at all to talk about. still dark here though. i want to show you what it looks like meanwhile in pleasanton, mostly clear, low cloud cover. this is one of the hot spots as we get into the your afternoon. but really, on shore flow still occurring we've got a full deck of clouds overhead. want to do a little drawing here and show you what we are working with in terms of the on shore flow. this afternoon, we're going to see that on shore flow strong. just about until 10:00 a.m. after that, we're going cut it

off and the sky will clear rapidly. as a result of that rapid warming on the way, 63 in the east shore area right now. we're at 60 san francisco, and 56 degrees, a comfortable start to the day. refreshing out there right now. as we get into your afternoon, 93 in the tri-valley. 84 degrees for the south bay, and the pence lea, another -- peninsula, another warm day, 84 degrees, but fog free, even know. looking live at oakland, looking good here this morning. we're going to check on your drive with mike in just a moment. here's what we're looking towards the surf in the bay area. we don't have a high surf advisory. we are expecting rough seas and dangerous rip currents. if you are planning on going to the beach, go to a guarded beach, swim with a buddy, that's a good idea, and really never turn your back to the ocean. today is one of the days you want to have your guard up. 68 to 73 degrees on the local beaches today. we're talking about potential for four to eight footers from from time to time. and the swells are going to be coming in fast as well.

pg serks figuring -- pg&e is trying to figure out how someone broke into the substation in san jose. this is the same substation hit by a sniper last year. investigators say the burglars stole some construction equipment. next week, federal researchers will start testing an experimental vaccine that could prevent ebola in humans. they'll test 20 healthy adult volunteers to see if the virus is safe and triggers the right response in their immune system. so far, ebola killed more than 1500 people in west africa. and happening today, a busy stretch of 280 is shutting down for safety upgrades. >> we're talking about the northbound lanes of 280 at the 101 interchange into downtown san francisco. lucero benitez from telemundo 38 joins us live. this closure begin agent 2:00 this afternoon -- beginning at 2:00 this afternoon. >> reporter: good morning scott and vicky, that's right,

starting at 2:00 this afternoon, this portion of interstate 280 will be shut down and although its been a long time coming, and this project is finally moving forward, it's good news for drivers in the long run, but not so much for those who will be traveling along interstate 280 during this three day weekend. and today, there's already a light up sign letting drivers know of the closure. its been here for a few days because it's right here on northbound interstate 280 at the 101 interchange where caltrans workers will be repleasing the hinges as part of the seismic upgrade to make it safer for driving during the closure, drivers will have to take a detour on ho to highway 101. caltrans will work along the stretch of the highway because the less traffic is expected during labor day weekend, but giants fans who plan on heading to the at&t park in the next few days will have to use a public transportation or alternate route to avoid heavy traffic. meanwhile, southbound lanes here on interstate 280 will not be

affected and this portion of interstate 280 is expected to reopen on tuesday at 5:00 in the morning. live in san francisco, lucero benitez, "today in the bay." >> thank you. redwood city placed new restrictions on outdoor water use. residents will not be allowed to use drinking water to clean driveways or sidewalks unless the hose has a shut off nozzle. also, fountains that don't recirculate will not be allowed like sprinkling will be restricted to two days week. violators could be fined up to $500 a day. this morning environmentalists are contesting a plan to allow loggers to remove burned trees after last year's rim fire. the highly awaited decision came amid a standoff over environmentalist and the timber industry about what to do with the dead trees. environmentalists say the blackened trees and new growth beneath them create a vital habitat for animals. supporters say logging would pay for replanting the forest.

afternoon, complete sunshine from the coast all the way through your inland valleys. temperatures today will reflect that, 848 degrees for the south bay. the peninsula is at 81 degrees. we're going head to the 80s on the east shore. 93 degrees there, and san francisco, stretch of 70 is coming your way or just about at 70 degrees. you're going to get warmer readings today like yesterday on the bay side. in fact, about five to ten degrees warmer on the bay side of the city than what you can expect on the ocean side. at 91 degrees out there in the north bay for today, live look at oakland, shows you it's a little overcast out there for now, we're going to get a really pretty sunrise and those pictures will start coming in as we head through the next 20 minutes. we'll show you those. this is what we're working right now. you can see, this is tropical storm marie. as it continues to move north over cooler water. losing steam, just an area of low pressure, by the time it imfacts us on sunday. we're expecting it for it to come far enough north to get sucked into the westerly flow

and that could translate to a few light showers. looks like the best chance will be in the higher elevations of the south bay. overall though, we are counting on those waves for today. could get pretty rough out there if you're a mariner or somebody who likes to fish, just keep in mind, we do have some really rough currents for today and that'll be the case through the weekend. then that'll start to ease by monday. overall though, looking comfortable for your holiday weekend, it's going to feel like summer for the unofficial end. i'm sad to see it go, mike, but i'm not sad to give my ac a break, how about you? >> not sad to give myself a break because the kids are in school now. little time in the afternoon. got to do the grocery shopping. got to get to work to pay for the groceries. westbound, the sign lit up, talking about that closure lucero just reported, i'll recap that just in case you missed it. for right now, maps and the slowing to the smooth moving san mateo bridge. slower southbound approaching 92 and continuing down towards union city out of hayward. typical pattern here and the castro valley.

same thing for the entire tri-valley. nothing unusual. live look out there, we have our camera and we did show you this. vicky talked about the low clouds, christina talked about fog coming through, but the drive is moving just fine. slowing just a bit because of the volume of traffic heading into this area. back to your maps, south bay with northbound 1011, slowing here and 856 showing more traffic. right now southbound shows about 59 miles per hour. it's very light traffic flow. but the northbound commute should kick in shortly. heading across the bay, smooth drive into the city right now. lucero talked about the closure from 2:00 p.m. today. 280 northbound is closed from 101 up to at&t park. that's only the northbound side. southbound out of the city is open all labor day weekend and continues that flow, but until tuesday morning, we have a closure there for the northbound side of 280. you'll take 101 up to cesar chavez and make your way over towards the ball park. service streets will be congested. allow extra time.

cal train will take you to the stadium and bart will have no problems into and out of city. the north bay will take a quick look through san rafael. building the volume just a tad bit. similar to this shot, back to you. >> thank you. follow-up for you, ufc football captain josh shaw has been suspended from all team activities indefinitely after he admitted to making up a story about how he hurt both of his ankles over the weekend. shaw claims he sprained his ankle jumping off a second story balcony to save his nephew from drowning in a pool. the press ate that story up and ufc trumpeted him as a hero. yesterday shaw admitted the entire thing was a lie. usc's head coach says quote, we are extremely disappointed in josh. nothing in his background led us to doubt him. so how did shaw really sprain his ankles? police are investigating whether shaw was the man seen shimmying down the side of a building after an apparent break-in at

his girlfriend's downtown apartment. plus police say shaw is not a suspect far in that break-in. a newark memorial high school teacher says she didn't mean it when she tweeted terrible things about her students. chris that hogs was slapped with a reprimand and has apologized for posting several tweets about violent things she said she wanted to do to students. the interim superintendent of the district told the paper there is an investigation into the tweets, but for now, she is still teaching. see if you agree with the teachers and parents saying this is not okay. in one tweet the teacher says i already want top stab some kids. is that bad? and another one, so happy to be done with school for ten days, but especially to be away from the ones who truly try my patience and make my trigger finger itchy. she told the paper she was kidding and never thought people would take her comments on twitter seriously.

indian ocean south of where they have been looking. investigators say a failed satellite phone call from the plane suggests the aircraft mach turned south earlier than previously thought. they didn't say what speed that phone call came from or why they're only getting that information now. the plane disappeared in march with 239 people on board. take a listen, chilling audio that was recorded just moments after a robbery suspect and a film crew member for the show cops were killed in a shootout. >> cops cameraman hit. he's not conscious, he's slightly breathing. >> the cops crew was riding along with police in omaha when officers got into a shootout with a robbery suspect. the shows audio supervisor bryce dion was caught in the cross fire and shot and killed by an officer. the suspect was also killed. and the suspect's weapon turned out to be an air soft gun painted black. and this is the first time a member of the cops production

staff has been killed in the 25 year history of the show. dion was recently in san jose filming an episode of cops. committee investigating the scandal involving new jersey governor chris christie and the george washington bridge is trying to get its hands on the cell phone records of a christie staffer. according to the new york times, the committee has subpoenaed a cell phone carrier hoping to find a text message conversation between the governor and his staffer. critics say christie and his administration orchestrated traffic crippling construction on the bridge to get back at a political opponent, then tried to cover it up. this morning, the bay area mother accused of attacking her daughter's bully at school may finally find out if she's going to be charged. she was arrested in may after investigators say she went to the elementary in and grabbed a 12-year-old boy by the throat. she has been back in court several times, but in each

morning. russian hackers may have been involved. but be the motive is unclear. the new york times says sensitive data like info on checking and savings accounts were stolen. jpmorgan not commenting. and apple may unveil its long awaiting iwatch on september 9th. the same day it's expected to launch the new iphone 6. reports say the smart watch will feature apple's health kit. rival samsung unveiled a new smart watch today, the gear f which can make calls without using a mobile phone nearby. there is word this morning that a second american may have been killed fighting with the militant group isis in syria. let's get right to "today in the bay's" tracy potts who is standing by live in washington, d.c., what have you learned? >> reporter: we're learning from someone who informed nbc, an official, source of nbc that apparently that second person was killed in the same incident where another american was killed over the weekend.

it appears mccain was not alone. this morning there are reports a second american has been killed fighting with isis militants in syria. the concern -- >> foreign fighters could go over there, get trained, then come back to their homeland. >> reporter: the u.s. believes as many as 100 americans may have joined isis. the behead r of james foley raises concerns about another american hostage. he made a direct appeal to islamic leaders. >> as a mother, i ask them to be merciful and not punish for matters he has no control over. i ask you to use your authority to spare his life. >> reporter: the white house is working to bring sotloff to bring him home, but not pay ransom. >> it only puts greater risk at lives of other american civilians. >> reporter: curtis is now home, he was held by dampbt radical

weather as of yesterday, we bent above average and we are going to go a little bit warmer for today. we're starting out with more 50s out there. 59 degrees in half-moon bay. 57 in san martin, that's three degrees cooler than yesterday. in san francisco, meanwhile, a taste of the mid50u6 and even the ummer 40s depending on where you're waking up with us in the north bay this morning. this is something that we've been telling you about really in passing, the los angeles area, big surf for us, we're going to get a little bit of the rough seas as well. and especially at our southern facing beaches. so if you're headed towards santa cruz today. you really, really want to take caution out there. dangerous rip currents, we're also talking about big waves crashing, four to eight footers, and temperatures will be warm on the sand. in the water, you're at 62 degrees. never turn your back to the ocean, and like i said before, keep in mind, we have those dangerous rip currents. that's really al note for

mariners and fishermen out there for today. as we get into this afternoon, kind of a warm day, 84 degrees for the south bay. 81 on the peninsula. 91 degrees in the north bay with changes coming your way for the holiday weekend. now you can see our temperatures are going to stay pretty steady, but we have a slight chance for rain. i'm going to talk about that in my next report, but first, i want to check your drive. here's mike inouye. there's a slight chance you might slow a bit towards the bay bridge toll plaza. yeah, probably, yeah. the metering lights are on. we continue with the backup which extends. no drama out of the made, just your typical build. we will look at oakland, 880 nob, northbound 880. the top of the screen into the 90s off-ramp if that's your exit. use caution. maybe one lane blocked by activity out there. southbound picks up the volume,

taillights blowing a bit towards the san mateo bridge and continuing through hayward. over here, 580 westbound. you see the haze, thabs not a problem as far as visibility for drivers. as that continues to light up with the sunrise, we're going to have a tougher time to see, it's a smoother drive just flowing. sunol, 680 here also haze. low clouds southbound 680 slows in through pleasanton. this shot here around the golf course and into the south bay. and san mateo bridge shows a smooth drive to the peninsula which has no delays right now. south bay a build for san jose. and the sign over on the right, it does talk about the closure, 280 northbound from 101 towards at&t park. starts 2:00 p.m. this afternoon. extends possibly until 5:00 a.m. on tuesday. they're doing the hinge repair work. i'll walk us through that coming up. >> thank you. back to school, everybody's getting back into the routine. >> of course, of course. >> appreciate it. we are just checking the latest numbers on the big board, dow industrial down 78 points

provide more information when it becomes available. this morning, a high surf warning still in effect for most of southern california. >> we have new video showing waves crashing along the pier in keel beach. some swells are as high as 15 feet. >> the high surf is stretching through l.a. and orange county this morning. surers are expected -- surfers are excited, but life guards are concerned. we are live in seal beach with more on the dangerous waves, good morning. >> reporter: vicky and scott, good morning to you guys. yeah the waves are still crashing here at seal beach. they've been doing it for the past 48 hours or so. i wanted to show you what's been constructed to protect homes in the area. these berms run for miles and mile along southern california. they are essentially sand levies built to protect homes in front of me from the ocean behind me. so far, they have taken a beating, but for the most part, they have held. now as you mentioned, over the

last 48 hours or so, we have seen some epic waves out here in southern california, and in some areas reaching 25 feet tall. it's a major draw for surfers from all across this region as well as thousands who have flocked and flooded to the beach to look at these incredible waves, but surf life guards told us conditions like these haven't been seen in 25 years. and they're warning everyone to please stay out of water. of course not everyone heeding that warning. the conditions here are extreme, they are dangerous, we have seen damage in terms of homes. we have seen buckling of floors as well as boats that have been tossed ashore, and piers ripped apart. there's still major concern all across this region. the peak waves passed us, for the next 24 hours, we'll continue to see big steps roll in. the threat will continue all the way up until friday. crews say they are going to have all life guards and all emergency personnel on deck here as the next 24 hours again will be quite critical, guys.

>> yes, they will, miguel, thank you so much. let's take you out to another picture, this is a lifeguard station in malibu that has collapsed because of these very, very strong waves. >> very serious weather out there. and a little choppy out here as well, let's bring in christina loren with a look at what it's going to be like in the bay area. >> yeah, we're going to see big waves here for today as well. nothing like down in socongressional, they're closer to the storm system. here in the bay area, we're talk about some pretty big waves by our standards. possibly up to eight feet from time to time. and we're expecting our peek here this afternoon, keep that in mind. probably one of the days better off to stay out of the water. we are counting on dangerous rip currents out there. and really it's our rough seas that are going to be a bigger factor. not near the shore. we have a note for mariners out there, small craft advisory is in place for today. as we get into the weekend, we're going to see good sized

waves, up to about four feet, then by monday, back to normal. 59 degrees in concord. 59 degrees to kick off the bay in half-moon bay. right now that fog is already fading. and the sun just came out about 15 minutes ago, you can see that here, still foggy, point reyes showing you a beautiful live look. you can see the ocean. you're not completely fogged in. even up there in the north bay coast. 91 degrees for the north bay today. 69 degrees in san francisco, about 81 on the east shore. comfortable conditions for you. 84 in the south bay, that's ac territory, and 81 degrees on the peninsula, out in the tri-valley for today, about 93 degrees. that's going to be the hot spot across the bay area. here's what we're going to get next from the same system that's driving in the big waves. whatever is left of what is now tropical storm marie will continue move to the north, potentially as we head through your sunday, we get some of that moisture headed our way as our westerly flow starts to pull it in. what we're really looking

towards is the potential for some light showers over the higher elevations of the south bay. like i said before, best chance looks like sunday. although we have a 5 to 10% chance through your saturday as well. so here's what we're working with, overall temperatures not budging that much as we head through the next couple of days. we will peak to 85 degrees. saturday, beautiful here in the heart of the weekend. 85 degrees then, and there's a lot going on across the bay area as we get into this weekend. for instance, on sunday, the oakland pride is taking place, 10:30 a.m., comfortable conditions out there. lots of color. also, here's somethingest that pretty cool. typically you have to go to places like sosilito to see the fine arts. on monday, you can head to the fair. upper 60s, what's more american than a fine art fair? that's a pretty bay area. >> nothing is more american. forefathers said that.

looking like a smooth drive. look how light it looks right here. 101 to 680. this is a different patterns. 101 and 680 with light slowing in the area. it's 87 from capitol, we had a good slow down, starting to smooth out now, there are no zinlts reported here for 280 or 85. those are the three freeways seeing the most change in the commute. i'm going to get half an hour. this is the typical flow, southbound 880 sbroo fremont. southbound 680, towards sunol. those are the directions when we see the build for traffic. up to at&t park, the northbound side of 280 closes where the continuati continuation. they use northbound 101 to san francisco and use cesar chavez on the morning. if you're heading up towards the

ball park or use mass transit, bart will take you nearby from the peninsula or the east bay. cal train will take you right to the stadium and no delays reported for any of these systems. golden gate bridge, easy drive right now. view shows you you can see across the span, no fog in this shot, but in some patches. looking towards oakland, easy drive pass the coliseum. tonight there's a raider's game. you'll have postgame traffic there. back to you. >> mike, thank you. members of a dangerous street gang who attacked innocent people in downtown san jose are under arrest. "today in the bay's" damian trahio joins us live and damian, we're proud to say you will only see it on nbc bay area. >> reporter: police had their hand fulls with the violent crews, first busted a group back in april and may. police dubbed that group the snot nosed kids. the group was between 11 and 17 years old. they would flirt with women

downtown to distract them, that's when a female member of the crew would walk up and in the words of police, deliver a knockout punch. suspects would 911 rock the victims. police on the regular beat arrested nine of the members this year, but the violent crime sprees didn't end there. violent assaults kept happening downtown. police discovered there was another group, four men, both juveniles and adults, they call themselves the squad and their mo was the same, walk up to unsuspecting victims who happened to be walking downtown and cold clock them. >> come from behind or the side. just viciously, vicious blows. once they're done on the ground, the assault continues. one individual is continuing the assault whether it's hands or feet, and the others are rummaging tlul his pockets and removing all the personal items from the victim. >> reporter: the suspects would take off with watches, purses, and other items. but a vigilant midnight shift took down this second crew,

again calmed the squad. the sergeant spear says his officers just got tired of writing all of these police reports about the robberies happening downtown. so they're taking now a proactive approach. we're live in downtown san jose, "today in the bay." >> damian, thank you. two boys face burglary and animal crewty charges after police say they ditched school and went on a crime spree. it happened in san jose's valley where one police say they beat a dog to death with a golf club. the 13 and 14-year-old broke into at least four home ngts neighborhood around their school, leland high. they were caught on a couple of surveillance cameras. check out that video. they were wandering from backyards and hopping fences when eric mckenzie and his family came out, they found two locked outside and a third badly beaten. they did not take anything, but they continued breaking into homes until one person caught them and held them until police got there. pg&e is trying to figure out

how someone managed to break into the substation in san jose. despite recent security upgrades, this is the same substation hit bay sniper last year. this happened around 2:00 yesterday morning. investigators say someone cut three giant holings in the fence surrounding that substation and stole some construction equipment. the substation is currently undergoing upgrades to address security concerns triggered by that sniper attack last april. pg&e says its preliminary investigation suggestings human error as the cause of the security breach, even though the alarm went off. local and federal investigators are still looking for those responsible for last year's sniper attack. they're looking at if surveillance video provided by pg pg&e. it destroyed 17 transformers and caused $15 million in damage. the vandals cut fiberoptic phone lines operated by at&t. pg&e and at&t are offering a combined reward of half a million dollars for information

that leads to an arrest. earlier this week, investigative reporter tony uncovered mistakes by the santa clara county office involving the attack. you can watch it right here online. go to nbcbayarea.com and click on the investigation's tab. turning now to the south napa earthquake in just a few hours, the napa valley food bank will begin handing out canned food to people who were hit hard by that south napa earthquake. this as we learn more about how bad the damage really is. "today in the bay's" nannette miranda is live in napa, nannette, four days after the quake, a better picture of what is still needed there in napa. >> reporter: well that's right. the picture is becoming clearer on just how much damage sunday's earthquake caused as you can see behind me, there's a lot of debris remaining in the area. here are some new numbers rel leased by the city of napa. the initial estimate is $300 million in damage.

632 structures tagged, of those, 116 red tacks and the rest yellow tags. and more than 40 aftershocks occurred yesterday in the napa area, the largest being 2.6. the clean up continues even four days after the 6.0 irk as you -- earthquake as you mentioned. people and business ves better ideas of what needs to be replaced and rebuilt. who's going to pay for that? so few californians have earthquake insurance, just 12%. brown valley is a private development in the area, bridges are closed and damage is obvious. a lot of anxiety here as to where the money for repairs will come from. >> is it going to be the homeowners and what not who has the insurance? the hoas and various areas of the city and the county? so we're just waiting to see that, and it's a concern for the neighborhood. not just ours, but city wide. >> reporter: it's surprising to see the number of californians who have earthquake insurance is
