fire burning along highway 150 near fruita. a lot of work ahead of them. new video from the fire overnight. flames coming close to the roadway it stopped traffic, but lanes have been reopened this morning. fire officials believe this fire started after a car crash yesterday afternoon. so far, no injuries or damage has been reported. mike inouye joins us now with a look at the labor day weekend traffic, that of course a main thorough fair, it's scary because people can't exit. there's nowhere to go. >> you could get off the casa i get, but that would be right in the area where the fire is. eastbound 152, i chuckle because there's one lane right now, and i remember getting through the area as well with casa, the reconfiguration was enough of a an adjustment. if you haven't been there for a few years, they have changed the roadways making a smoother flow. right now this fire making an issue for eastbound. they hope to reopen both lanes

later on in the morning as they get a little bit more of a handle on the situation there with that brush fire. a smoother drive slower in between 101 and i-5. if you're heading towards l.a. and disneyland. we would suggest that being universal owned or consider that as your route to the south land right now. the rest of the drive moving smoothly. but we will focus on another issue getting into san francisco. this is for locals, be an issue all weekend long. northbound 280 is closed from 101 all the way up to at&t park. let me show you the video we have, just after the closure yesterday, but already begin busting up the roadway, and we have a slow drive past the area as folks see what's going on as early as this morning. but southbound 280 is open and again this is video from yesterday when it was well lit. right now we're seeing a smooth drive across the golden gate bridge with no problems, but again getting into the city, near 101 from the peninsula will be an issue. getting in from the north bay is not a problem because of traffic

flowing light right now. the bay bridge toll plaza has a drive right now. it's a lighter flow on the east shore freeway. we have one crash up in richmond, the albany area, and a little slow down there from an earlier crash. >> triple-a says more people will hit the roads. >> a lot more this year because we've adjusted after the higher gas prices. >> they've come down. >> thank you. >> extra report. >> i feel good now, thanks. now continuing coverage of the south napa earthquake, overnight, crews were on oak street cutting off gas services to this house which was just red tagged yesterday. firefighters say the man who lives there was trapped when the house suddenly shifted from its foundation. he wasn't hurt, but firefighters did have to help him escape the house through a window. small businesses in napa hoping for a successful labor day weekend. >> not everything's back to normal, but wineries, retailers hoping that the earthquake won't but the at dmp damper on the last holiday weekend of the summer season. is live in napa with more on what they're doing to make sure people know the welcome mat is out? >> reporter: good morning to you there kris, the hotel on the outskirts of downtown, they've had a restoration company working around the clock to get them open in time for check-in later today. you're looking at the equipment that this company's been using. those are wet vacs, they've been trying to vacuum up, sop up all the water that burst from the sprinklers when the 6.0 shook. i just spoke with the property, they do plan to be open in time for check-in later today. now we know of only two other hotels that are still shut down, the andaz napa, we saw that being yellow tagged earlier this week. and in the napa valley, marriott hotel and spa, it's not clear when either location will reopen, the napa tourism office tells us that 98% of the hotels are up and running. same goes for 95% of restaurants

and wineries. including the st. berry winery which lost a few hundred bottles of wine during sunday's shaker. one of the most heavily damaged winery in the region in spite of that, the winery tells us that tomorrow, sunday, monday are looking to be very busy. they know this because tastings are done by appointment. they think they've done such a great job of cleaning up their winery that'll be hard to tell there was ever a quake there. >> on friday will be our first hit, so at 7:00, our grapes will arrive. people visiting us in the morning around 10:00, 11:00, 12:00 will get to see the sorting table and our first wine coming in. >> reporter: you might recall earlier in the week, napa valley wine train was shut down temporarily because of concerns over possible track damage that they have since alleviated that.

that is back up and running. a very popular attraction here in wine country. it is the labor day holiday weekend and lot of the region plans to be up and running. as you come here live, you can see the workers, this is what the restoration company must be shift change or they're taking a break, but you can get a sense of how many people have been in there trying to get this hotel back open after the water damage caused by sunday's earthquake. and again, this hotel plans to be back open within the next several hours. reporting live here in napa, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> all right. we heard you gathering information as we speak, thanks, bob. >> i think we should send bob up there for the weekend, and we should join him, just for the reporting of it. maybe christina loren too. tell us more about the potential of aftershocks perhaps. yeah, it's looking better this morning. but i think a lot of people are going to go up there and show their support to the residents of napa. and that's a good way to show your support, spend your tourism

dollars up tr there. through the next two days, this is the latest from the usgs, the probability now less than 10%. less than 10% for a 5.0 magnitude or larger. that is good news. also we're always taking a look at aftershocks, over the past 12 hours, we haven't had anything above a 2.0 for the west napa fault or even adjacent fault. that's good news. i want to remind you to bring the sunscreen, it is a little bit on the warm side, but not as hot as it could be. this isn't that bad, temperatures are going to be feel summer like for the unofficial end of the season. now this is what we're tracking, some changes in your forecast for today. courtesy of subtropical mire kreepg up from the remnants of hurricane marie moving all the way into the bay area. you can see that steady stream of moisture coming in, you're going to feel that today. it'll feel sticky, we're also getting shower activity, very light, nothing measurable. a lot of this is verga, which is

dissipates before it hits the surface. and actually getting a little bit of moisture over the pass where that fire is this morning. we'll have more coming up for you. 62 degrees south bay. 63 on the planes, the east shore, comfortable conditions for you. we're headed towards the 70s. like i said before, you'll notice that humidity. we have a better chance for showers getting into your holiday weekend, not a washout, right now back to you scott and kris. >> thank you christina. just, 15 people hurt after a bus crash in chicago. this is new video this morning. the shuttle bus apparently hit a concrete median on a nearby interstate. at least ten ambulances are on the scene. that crash blocked traffic forcing some people to the walk to the airport on what is one of the busiest travel days of the year. disturbing discovery near morgan hill where someone dumped a burned body. the investigation had roads nearby closed for part of the day. witnesses found the body on a

at grace church. police say the woman was stabbed at least once. investigators now reviewing surveillance video from homes across the street to try to find the suspect. google releasing new information this morning surrounding its secret drone project. right now the company is testing drone deliveries in australia as part of project wings. google says it made more than 30 successful drops including a first aid kit, candy bars, and a dog street treat. san jose police getting rid of its armored vehicle following backlash from ferguson, missouri. this one's used by the redwood city police department. critics, including president obama say local police departments are becoming too military rised. san jose police facing criticism for the recent drone purchase decided keeping the vehicle wasn't worth the potential damage to the image. the armored vehicles sparked a debate in recent weeks.

police in ferguson used them to control the crowds of the shooting death of the unarmed black man. new restrictions on thousand uses a controversial license plate raider. "today in the bay's" reporter joins us live from outside the police headquarters, and damian, there's growing concern about how the police are storing that information. who's information they're storing and what it might be used for, good morning. >> reporter: yeah, it's highly controversial here in the city of los altos. but yeah, a lot of police departments in the bay area and across california continue using this technology on license plate readers. in this case, how does it work? patrol car cruisers through a neighborhood and the system reads a license plate of every car it comes across. police say it allows them to detect any vehicles used in crimes or perhaps stolen cars. officers says it saves time in calling dispatch for one suspicious license plate. this.

allows them to get immediate hits on suspicious vehicles. now here in los altos. it authorized the storing of information for only one year. in a recent report on the protocols and use of this technology. the chief told the city he plans to store the information indefinitely for crime fighting purposes. the dispatch newspaper here in this town reports in the last fiscal year, the readers scanned almost 136,000 plates, and of those, only 68 got hit for suspicious vehicles. again, it remains controversial here, but the chief says this is going to allow him to fight crime a little bit better. we're live in los altos, "today in the bay." menlo parking day immediate action to the new water restrictions. the city is calling for residents to cut back their water use by 30%. that is 10% more than what the state wants. many residents say that is just too drastic. city officials say the state was forcing the city to quickly make

up their own water ordnance which wasn't updated since the 1990s. it is going to affect more than 16,000 people. >> whether it's 20% or 30%, ths is serious. >> city officials say they had no choice but to quickly implement a plan. they are working again on lowering the requirement. they promise to educate residents on reduction before citing them. lawyers hope to move forward against a lawsuit on a proposition to tax sugary drinks. they plan to put measure d on the ballot in november. two residents filed a lawsuit opposing the attacks saying it is biassed and misleading. judge will hear arguments from both sides later this afternoon. well, let's check your forecast. live look at the eastern approach at the bay bridge, that's pretty this morning. we saw a lot of lower hanging fog, is that going to burn away? >> some of it is. then we're going to see midlevel and high clouds pretty much all

day long. more clouds than we typically see on an august afternoon in the bay area. you made it to friday. its been kind of a rough week for us here in the bay area with that 6.0 magnitude earthquake. up in the napa area on sunday? we haven't had any significant earthquakes above 2.0 for the last 12 hours. we would like to keep you updated on that. when it comes to the drought, we have the latest monitor yesterday and improvement there from that subtropical moisture in the mohave desert, the one place that showed improvement from the thunderstorms was out in the desert. how do you like that? they're getting more rain than us here in the bay area. as you know, the rainy season is just around the corner, and by september 30th, typically, we pick up a half inch of rain in the north bay. sop yeah, hopefully going to see that rain start as we get into next month which is just a couple days away now. 57 in san martin, temperatures are going to be comfortable for the first part of the day, but it'll be sticky, got to remind you about that.

especially if you suffer from the frizzies. going to feel that for today. 85 degrees in the south bay, added humidity on the peninsula. 72 degrees in san francisco, 87 up in the north bay. hot and humid there. fair weather on the east shore, and 9 degrees, a little muggy throughout in the tri-valley area for today. no triple digits as you know, it could be worse. it if you're getting out of town this weekend, let's talk about what where bay area residents like it go. low 80s to mid-70s all weekend long. russian river valley good as well. temperatures comfortable there. little on the hot side by saturday afternoon. close to the mid-90s, but overall, jump in the river or hey, hit the beach. couple warnings for beach goers this weekend. temperatures will be warm on the water, and even in the water we're still getting the unusual currents where stemps are in the mid-60s. typically we're at about 54 degrees in the water this time of year where it's 64 right now. that's in santa cruz and

monterrey earlier this week, we had a 68 degrees water temperature. it's unusual. if you're going to get throughout, watch out for rip currents. temps stay steady in the south bay and in san francisco all the way through the beginning of next week, here's mike and the drive. we have a problem, this is a lighter friday commute, but here's the issue, northbound 280 is closed. and that happened yesterday afternoon, you know about that or you should if you're heading into san francisco. it's closed for that work. the repair work for the hinges. your alternate is northbound 10 1d where we just heard about a three vehicle crash. north 101 at cesar chavez. blocking your slow lane. that's one less on your only free getting north in through san francisco. that will be an issue until they clear that and chp hasn't arrived on scene. this just happened. cesar chavez, mary poe is a, those are the two or three areas where we can go back and forth between third street. if that's where you're headed, the other areas where l have

more traffic flow because of the traffic necessary as there is that closure for northbound 280. we'll track the crash north 101. the rest of your bay moves as you would expect on a friday, it's a lighter flow of traffic and just a little slowing shows up. not a problem as far as the volume of traffic. over here towards the tri-valley, 580 westbound with the headlights coming towards me and it's a light volume right now. steady speeds on the 50 to 55 mile per hour range all the way out of altamont, that's a great flow of traffic. christina talked about tahoe, eastbound 580 for some folks heading over to i-80. it'll start in the afternoon because it is labor day weekend, expect that to be a shift earlier than the typical friday. and bay bridge toll plaza, we have no backup because it is a friday here. more folks heading in about midday, and that'll continue to build throughout the day. and there may be a shift in traffic because of that closure for 280. any time anything happens. people just tend to change their routes anyway. they think they're helping, sometimes they're not. and we're looking at the south

they evacuated several communities close by. we have video of the eruption. massive column. smoke there out of the volcano. nearly a half inch of ash. this is prompting flight delays. it is one of the most active in the region. it most recently erupted last year. >> you can see it from so far away. malaysia airlines is laying off 6,000 workers following a double passenger jet disaster. now the staff production represents 30% of the current work force. the airline will be completely owned by the government. investigators continue to scour the indian ocean for flight 370 which of course disappeared back in march, and then in july. 298 people were killed when flight 17 was shot down over eastern ukraine. this morning soldiers are surrounded by rebels and we suspect real russian troops in the eastern part of the country. and now russia's president

vladimir putin calling on the rebels to let the soldier goes. putin's statement came several hours after ukraine accused russia of being is its territory with tanks and troops, nato and the u.s. make the same accusation. this is the image released by nato. it says those are russian combat forces engaged in military operations inside ukrainian territory. russia denies it saying the troops are volunteers. we have video of pro-russian forces in eastern ukraine. the leader says 3,000 volunteers from the russian army joined the ranks. israeli police say they have found the bodies of an american hiker. aaron suler in's body was found in a wooded area where he had gone hiking with a friend. israeli police say there's no evidence of foul play. initially sulfur's family was concerned he disappeared due to attention between israel and hamas. well the 9/11 memorial plaza

session, they're concerned he might do it alone. >> reporter: yeah, but the president says that won't happen. what he needs are other countries to back him up. >> i don't to want put the cart before the horse. we don't have a strategy yet. >> reporter: the u.s. has hit more than 100 isis targets in iraq, our people are there, military, diplomats, but in syria, where isis is strong, president obama says it's too soon to order air strikes. he's asking the pentagon for options. and sending secretary of state john kerry back to the middle east to get other countries on board. >> right now, those structures are not in place. >> reporter: with congress still out of town, lawmakers feared president obama would order air strikes in syria without congressional approval. >> that's not what's going to happen. it's going to be important for congress to know why that is, in part because it may cost some money. >> reporter: experts wonder whether air strikes would even work. >> it's not going to be enough in my judgment to push them out

refugees are children. let's check your forecast as we give you a live look out at san jose in the south bay this morning. we begin our three day weekend with meteorologist christina loren, good morning. >> can't say that enough. good morning. good morning to you. three a day weekend, fall. we want fall around here. we need rainfall afterall, and you know what, we're tracking some for the unofficial end of summer time. go figure. we have showers today, few showers onts way for tomorrow -- on the way for tomorrow and sunday as well. we're not expecting a washout, don't cancel your plans. this is awesome moisture coming up from that remnants of what was once hurricane marie. that the point, it's extra tropical storm marie, and really not showing any significant krirkists of organization. this falling apart. as we showed you all week long, the moisture is coming our way. you'll notice right when you walk out this morning, we're tracking the batch of rain on the way to the north bay and a

live bodega bay at 9:00 a.m. this morning. we're tracking the showers on shore throughout the today show. otherwise, we look good for more of the activity as we continue through the daze today and tomorrow as you can see that steady stream of moisture moving right into the bay area. this is going to continue to funnel in until finally we get a little area of low pressure that digs south as we get into next week. we're counting on the muggy pattern today, tomorrow, and sunday as well. you'll notice, plenty of midlevel clouds out there today. 85 degrees for the south bay. 79 degrees on the peninsula. san francisco's at 72 degrees. and we're looking at about 87 degrees in the north bay for today. meanwhile, fair conditions on the east shore, 75 for you and 89 degrees out in the tri-valley. so, we've got your weekend forecast coming up. stick around, we're going to get to that in just a minute, back to you, scott and kris. >> thank you. now a reminder, there's a busy stretch of interstate 280 in. san francisco closed right now for seismic upgrades.

caltrans shut down the northbound lanes of 280 on the extension for the entire holiday weekend in fact the closure from 101 interchange to the king street exit, 280 of course one of the most popular routes headed into san francisco from south and at&t park. the giants are home all weekend. caltrans says everything should be back open tuesday morning. mike inouye joins us now with a look. let's don't forget, they are happened memorial day. >> yeah, and fourth of july holiday, happened in the same area, they just didn't get all the hinges repaired. we have had a problem on the alternate. 280 closed, your alternate is the northbound 101. more trafgs already yesterday in the evening, and this this morning, we have slower drive, but in that only alternate northbound, we had a crash at cesar chavez blocking the slow lane for 15 minutes. that was enough to stop the slow down and complicate things.

maybe send it back to these folks approaching 280 and 101 northbound where there's another crash northbound 101 as you're approaching 280. that is a second crash for the area in just 20 minutes. we're watching for that to clear from the roadway, but we do see it slower drive developing into san francisco again as scott said all weekend long nap closure will continue. now the rest of the bay is showing your typical friday pre holiday weekend drive lighter. the bay bridge toll plaza shows you no problems, no issues defense attorney the east shore freeway after it cleared at buchanon, that. ed very early in the commute and cleared past golden gate field. we'll look at dublin and westbound 580 through the central valley into the bay area smooth drive westbound with just a few headlights. eastbound, we'll see more slowing starting early afternoon as folks make the getaway to the central valley. san jose looks like a smooth drive, right now throughout the silicon valley, easy flow of

traffic like you see here. heading south from here, continuing on towards the south land in towards l.a. we have an issue over at casa de frulta. maybe fog around gilroy. probably going to clear, but you see the low clouds, biggest concern, fruita over to i-5. only one lane open because of the brush fire we're talking about. folks heading to l.a. via i-5 from 101. that'll be a concern now. they hope to have all lanes open later on. but right now traffic control for safety's sake. >> have another cup of coffee. >> there you go. >> we get a lot of of that. let's take you out live to the big board in new york city this morning. dow industrial's up 134 points, we had a rough day yesterday, but it looks as if we're going to be able to close the week on the positive. dow at 17,093. >> short trading day today. >> that's a good question. no trading on monday. >> okay.

welcome back, joan rivers remains hospitalized in new york this morning after going into cardiac arrest. the 81-year-old's daughter melissa released a statement this morning saying her mother is resting comfortably. she did not elaborate on her condition. the comedian was rushed to mt. sinai hospital in new york city yesterday morning after going into cardiac arrest. she was having a minor surgical procedure done on her vocal cords. tony stewart will speak publicly for the first time since that crash in which he struck and killed fellow driver kevin ward your junior. stewart is expected to talk about his return to the track ahead of this weekend's race at the atlanta motor speedway. the three time sprint cup series champion sat out the past three races since his car hit ward earlier this month. stewart is expected to race this weekend. it is 6:41, coming up is napa ready for the holiday weekend? we'll look at the quake and how

street cutting off gas service to this house which just was red tagged yesterday. firefighters say the man who lived there was trapped when the house suddenly shifted from its foundation. now he was not hurt, but firefighters had to help him get out a window. another napa neighborhood will be without water for several days while crews work to repair a new sink hole that opened up four days after the quake. it's about two mimes from napa's stores downtown. the sink hole was most likely triggered by a water main break like the others. >> so everyone's busy this morning getting the hotels and the wineries damaged in the quake ready for the labor day weekend. small business owners wants everyone to know napa is open for business. of red wine that smashed, came crashing down during sunday's 6.0. that poured into the winery gardens. >> the garden has become an attraction of itself because people have seen reports on the earthquake know that the wine flowed down into the garden. $4 million worth of wine. they're curious and the that. >> reporter: the tourism office telling us they expect most everything to be open. the westin hotel, they are going to be open in time today for check-in. the only hotels that are still shut down that we know of are the andaz, that's downtown napa, we saw that getting yellow tagged earlier in the week. napa valley marriott hotel and spap. napa valley wine train. that was shut down earlier in the week. they were concerned about possible damage, but that is back open and will be open for this labor day holiday weekend.

here. this is the other big issue for the bay area. this is the big issue all weekend. north 280 is closed from 101 up to at&t park for the weekend. and well we do have the 101 as your alternate, using cesar chavez, going through the the ball park tonight, up to at&t park where there is a game, that will be one of your reroutes. city streets will be crowded as we were the last time we had that closure over on the fourth of july. right now cesar chavez, another back towards 280. already in the slower drive, there've ban couple of fender benders that's been an issue there. that'd be the option and get you around any problems. if you're coming over from the east bay. the bay bridge shows this. look how light the traffic is and no problems. oakland, a quick look past the coliseum. you have speed throughout the freeway. the golden gate bridge the issue, maybe low clouds sinking down right at the deck, but the not a major problem. we have a light volume out of the north bay. remember, as we've been talking about. napa has a couple of streets closed, but they are open for business. keep that in mind.

back to you guys. new this morning, police requested the psychological evaluation for bait area woman arrested for several times trying to sneak on to flights. last night, marilyn hartman gave an interview from jail cell, jail facility rather in phoenix where she was arrested earlier this week. police took her into custody after she was found loitering near baggage claim. in her interview, she says she knows what she's doing is wrong, and she wants to get arrested. >> why has the government allowed me to get past security points new mexico i force the -- until i forced the issue in february and had to beg to be arrested? >> earlier many month, hartman was able to fly from san jose to l.a. without a boarding pass. san jose police are searching far suspect after finding a woman's body inside a parked car at a church. passer by called police around 11:00 last night to report that finding. the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. police say the woman had been

stabbed at least one time. her identity has not yet been released. now the body was found in grace church's parking lot on aborn road. investigators are reviewing nearby surveillance cameras. this is now san jose's 26th homicide of this year. and new restrictions this morning on the use of license plate readers. "today in the bay's" reporter is live outside of police headquarters, growing concerns about how long this data is stored and how police are going to use it. >> reporter: that's right. you know, television not new technology, its been used far quite a while, and its helped recover a lot of stolen cars, but it remains controversial, especially with the latest decision here in the town of los altos. the city initially said it would be stored for only one year, but in recent report on a protocols and use of this technology, the chief told the city he planls to store the information

indefinitely. here's how to works. the patrol car cruises through a neighborhood and the system reads the license plate of every car it comes across. police say it allows them to detect any vehicles, views, and crimes, and detects stolen cars. officers say it saves time in calling dispatch for one suspicious license plate. the dispatch newspaper here reports in the last fiscal year, the readers scanned almost 136,000 license plates of those, only 68 got hit for suspicious vehicles. so again, remains controversial, especially lay it part where the chief says he plans to hold on to the license plate numbers that the readers scan throughout the city indefinitely.
