smarts well beyond his years. >> it's quite a story to tell. we want to get to the top story. britain is on edge after officials raised the threat level to severe, meaning an attack is highly likely. we are in london with the latest. kelly, good morning. >> reporter: lester, good morning. british officials say there's no evidence or intelligence to suggest there's a specific or imminent attack. with 500 citizens traveling to syria and iraq to join isis and 200 now back, the threat, they say, is real. britain awoke to a new fear splashed on every headline. terror alert high, the highest since 2011. a terrorist attack, the government warned is highly likely. >> what we are facing in iraq with isis is a greater and deeper threat than we have known before. >> reporter: isis has the

world's attention and they are using it, posting yet another violent disturbing video. this time a kurdish soldier. >> this is the golden era. >> reporter: they have given tips on how to join the fight. >> this is james foley. >> reporter: the killer spoke with an accent. >> there are gaps in our armory and we need to strengthen them. >> reporter: britain hasn't been hit since 2005 when they bombed the journd ground and a bus killing 52. last year, a british soldier was slaughtered on a london street in broad daylight by two islamic extremists. >> they are beginning to posture and threaten the west and western interest. literally hundreds or thousands of fighters with passports that give them easy access.

>> reporter: passports that allow them to travel to britain and beyond and the u.s. >> i don't anticipate there's a plan to change that level. >> reporter: the department of homeland security said in a statement officials are deeply concerned about the threat posed by isis. they know of no specific credible threat to the u.s. lester? >> kelly, thanks very much. >> we have a terrorism analyst for nbc news, he worked as a consultant. nice to have you hear. >> thank you very much. >> the question many at home have is just what does it mean for us here in the u.s. the threat level has not been raised here. >> face it, the uk has more of a problem than we do. they have 500 to 600 nationals that traveled to syria. about six times as many americans have gone. they are not far from france where 900 french nationals have

gone to syria. there's reason for concern here. we are seeing not just britain and french nationals, but americans. an english language magazine geared toward encouraging westerners to travel to syria and seek training with isis. >> one of the difficult things about tracking down the people, the westerners is there's not a specific profile of those that are going to join the fight. >> a lot of people think of 9/11 hijackers. these folks do not look like nine hijackers. look at shannon connolly from colorado, a 19-year-old woman converts to islam who decided to join isis. adam, a 20-year-old american from california. look at the folks going there and dying. mccain, he's folks that don't fit a particular profile. >> they don't fit a profile. we are seeing a terror threat level in the uk for a couple

reasons. what is that going to change when you stee elevated threat level? >> one of the reasons they are elevating is the fact you saw the video coming out, the execution of jim foley, it's a british national speaking with a british accent. they are putting them front and center. is this a warning something is on the horizon. >> that is -- on the surface that's why the threat level is raised and the proximity of the uk and the sheer number of people. is there something else that your gut tells you why now and why this level? >> look, there are more indicators out there that we haven't been talking about. the norwegians raised their terror level to the highest there is. why? a group of individuals, europeans, trained in syria were returning on norwegian passports. why would a group of individuals

trained in syria be traveling back to europe with fake passports? they were extremely concerned. this is not a threat limited to norway. there are individuals out there, not a large number, but people trained in syria and would like to carry out terrorist attacks here. they are asking for what explosives to build, the bombs to build. that's going on right now. look, is it more of a concern? yes, it is. we should understand, this is a conflict that has more western recruits than any jihadi conflicts we have seen. in yemen, we were talking about yemen, a handful of western operatives. here, we are talking thousands of people. it's a big difference. >> a sobering reality. i appreciate your time. >> thank you very much. president obama is taking a lot of heat these days over something he said about isis and going after them in syria. the administration spent 24

hours in a fair amount of damage control after the president admitted the u.s. has no strategy for responding in syria. kristen welker is at the white house for more this morning. good morning. >> reporter: lester, good morning to you. the no strategy comment played into the hands of the republican critics who said he lacks clear vision. the white house argued the remarks were taken out of context. it posed one more challenge as the president grapples with multiple conflicts abroad. president obama returned to the white house late friday after a night of fund raising in the middle of two foreign policy crises in ukraine and the middle east. throughout the week, the obama administration launched air strikes in iraq. it is the spread of isis in syria that poses his latest challenge. >> we certainly have done planning and execution inside

iraq. the syria component is new. >> reporter: they went in damage control. mr. obama said there was no plan yet for dealing with syria. >> i don't want to put the cart before the horse. we don't have a strategy, yet. >> reporter: critics pounced. >> to say we don't have a strategy is shocking given the severity of the threat. >> reporter: they launched a press to clarify. >> the president does not believe just pursuing a military strategy is a substitute for the comprehensive strategy that will be required to arrive as a solution to the problem. >> reporter: as isis makes gains in syria, releasing propaganda videos and recruiting westerners, it is mounting on the president. >> we are not ready today to deal with isis. it is a long-term challenge, it is an international challenge. we have to get on top quickly. >> reporter: he condemned the

escalation by russia in ukraine president putin continues to flex his muscles. 5,000 russian troops crossed the border. with president obama's approval ratings sagging, he thooz deal with both crises. the president could announce new sanctions against russia next week. as for syria, secretary of state, john kerry is traveling to the middle east in the coming days to build a coalition of allies to confront the spread of isis. in an op-ed, what's needed is a quote, global operation. lester. >> thank you very much. time for a look at the rest of the stories. a dramatic mine rescue is going on. two dozen gold miners were trapped after a mine caved in in

nicaragua wednesday. most of them are dehydrated but in good condition. a start to the holiday weekend. oregon coast, a 9-year-old girl died after a hole in the sand caved in on her friday afternoon. she was buried in three to five feet of sand. a hole she dug several yards from the water. people, including her family came to the rescue and dug her out, but it was too late. tony stewart will race tomorrow for the first time since the tragic crash that killed a fellow driver. he began practicing in georgia. he's broken the silence about the death of kevin ward jr. >> it's been one of the toughest tragedies i have had to deal with professionally and personally. >> the police investigation of the crash is expected to take at least two more weeks. comedian joan rivers is in serious condition. her daughter, distraught, released a statement saying her

condition remains serious. she is receiving the best treatment and care possible. rivers was rushed to the hospital thursday after going into cardiac arrest. the family is back together in that controversial case of a woman in phoenix who left her kids in a hot car during an interview. she's regained custody. >> i have been holding my breath three days. >> reporter: it's the decision she was praying for. >> mommy, can we go home? mommy, can we go home. i can tell them let's go home. that is wonderful. >> reporter: thursday, the 35-year-old mother regained custody of her two children after an incident that gained attention because of this mug shot that went viral. she left her kids in a hot car while she went to a job interview in scotts dale, arizona. she couldn't finds anyone to care for them. >> go through with it.

on friday, america's biggest retailer, walmart, opened two new clinics in georgia, making a move to deliver primary care to the 5,000 u.s. stores. >> you will have to have an op pointment to get all of these things done? >> no. >> reporter: opening up clinics in the rural areas to where there is not as much access to care -- >> reporter: and with the walk-in care costing average $40, this could be a game-change canner. >> it could have ripple effects and challenge hospitals and doctors to consider their pricing as well. >> reporter: there are nearly 2,000 retail clinics in target, walgreens and cvs. they are staffed by nurse practitioners or physician assistants and most are open seven days a week, and some have evening hours. they are commonly used for treating colds and flu, and infections and minor sprains and for getting some vaccinations. but experts caution that retail

speeds, mega drop and bustling winds, but it is over in a flash. >> how was that? >> reporter: oh, a amazing. after traveling of nearly 100 miles an hour, and i can tell you sit terrifying and crazy and something that i am in no rush to do again. plenty of people love that kind of thing, but if like me, you not an adrenalined a dick for air speed, take a rickety train ride down a mine shaft for a big bounce down below. there is a complex of narrow paths and nets suspended in a huge cavern. it is physical and awkward and very funny. amazingly, you can jump up to 80 feet in here if you dare. i can tell you that it quite a workout. there are three trampolines one above the other connected by fast and furious chutes, and then you wouns around the course to go up the pathways and sliding down the tunnels and

businesses welcomed holiday travelers. rooms are yellow tagged due to water damage, some are available for the guests, and they are making the most of it. the wineries are organizing a bus load of volunteers to help clean up today. over at the first united methodist church, there was a barbecue on the lawn. the church is off kilter and lost part of the facade after the earthquake. they will need financial and physical help in the weeks to come. there's information on the website on how to help. new details about two bay area police agencies with explaning today after admitting they cannoting the for all of their guns. they went missing from the sheriff's department, and according to an audit, the napa valley department does not know what happened to the rifles, and missing two high powered

before we get to all that, we want to get a look at the mornings top news stories. jenna has that inside. >> good morning. britain remains on high alert after prime minister david cameron raised the threat level to severe. that means an attack is highly likely. kelly is in london with more. good morning. >> reporter: the headline on nearly every paper this morning, a terrorist attack highly likely in the uk. british officials say they have no intelligence suggesting one is imminent. the only visible change is a bigger police presence. behind the scenes, british officials are working this weekend on a plan to protect against their own citizens. fighters for the terror group, isis, who return and may want to do harm here or in europe or the u.s. 500 british passport holders have gone to syria, some have been killed. about 200 are back. there's talk of laws to strip

he is 9 years old and already has a story to tell. a fourth grader in houston is held a hero this morning after stopping an alleged carjacker. mark potter has the story. >> reporter: for this 9-year-old home safe and sound, it wauz night to remember. it began as he and four other kids were driven home from school in a private transport car. police say when the driver got out to get fast food and left the suv running, a stranger jumped in and took off. he said hey. i was like, wait, you are in the wrong car. she's like, i know. i'm stealing this car. i was like, oh. >> reporter: the driver went so fast, it woke up another child who had fallen asleep before the
