today because of the remnants of marie. we'll see more of the filtered sunshi sunshine, not full on blue sky, however, though, as we head through monday, temperatures are going to surge, talking about the hottest locations like livermore close to 100 on monday. rem nanants spread today keepin the humidity in place. there may be sprinkle activity, down near the santa cruz mountains and the 101 corridor. overall, the filtered sun, semis not too bad, however, chilly in the north bay, 52 right now, hard to believe they'll be in the lower 90s this afternoon. 86 in the south bay, and east shore averaging in the mid-70s. we have the breeze, but monday, it's hot, and we'll talk about that in a bit. >> anthony, thank you. new this morning, the search for a missing elderly woman in the east bay. the search and rescue team is

looking for a missing resident, the 77-year-old, who walked from her home on if the head drive noon on wednesday. the family called for help after searching for her for several hours. she suffers from dementia and speaks limited english with a heavy russian accent. officials say she was last seen in a dark shirt and pants walking near marsh drive. she's described as 5'5" and 150 pounds, light brown hair and brown eyes. continuing coverage of the south napa earthquake. look at this video. it was taken by cameras at the yard that houses the the napa valley wine train. the cars shook violently on the track and transformers exploded in the background. the quake forced the destination to shut down last sunday and monday. it's been reopened after the tracks, train, bridges, and the

trusles all passed inspection. reopening is the word everyone wants to hear this morning. there was celebrating last night as businesses welcomed holiday travelers. they popped champaigne at the west westin hotel. some rooms are available for guests this weekend and they are making the most of it. the staff at the san francisco winery is organizing a bus load of volunteers to go to napa to help with cleanup. at the first united methodist church, there was a barbecue on the lawn as the church is leaning off kilter an lost part of the facade. commissioners know it's a long jurn noi to recovery. >> i just love the church so it was really disturbing to see what happened. i feel so much better now that i see everyone. it's -- it's hard. but, you know, we'll be fine. >> napa strong is a hashtag on

a high school track coach accused of unlawful sex with a minor this morning. lopez look worked at san jose high school, facing three felony charges, a campus assistant as well as the track coach. they are asking for more potential victims to come forward. a walnut creek police officer on the wrong side of the law. thompson accused of attacking a woman with a baseball bat while off duty. police arrested him two weeks ago after receiving calls about a masked man. after the arrest, they found a badly beaten woman hiding in the bushes and found a ski mask and baseball bat inside thompson's car. >> we'd gone to bed, and started hearing something banging, and something similar to a car door slamming, but happening over and over again. it's been quiet over there. no real activity at all.

so bizarre for this neighborhood. >> so far, no charges filed, and police are not giving out any kind of motive for the attack. all they've said is that thompson's deceased relative was the owner of the home in the neighborhood that was recently vandalized. new details about new bay area police agencies with explaning to do after add admitting they cannoting the for their guns. according to a recent audit, the napa county sheriff's department does not know what happened to one of the m-16 rifles. meanwhile, missing two of the high powered weapons, and the guns were provided by the department of defense as part of a special program. that program provides military-style weapons and equipment to a variety of law enforcement agencies nationwide. the counties are now among nine california agencies that have been suspended from the program until they can account for the

clouds spreading in from the center of the low, and they're going to continue to spread in for the rest of the week, and, in fact, today and tomorrow, expect filtered sun. here's the component to the forecast, each morning, today and tomorrow, there's potential for light shower activity, see that now detected in the santa cruz mountains, corridor of 101, morgan hills, and point reyes and san francisco. it's more of a sprinkle activity, i don't think it'll be a heavy shower activity. temperatures right now, really chilly in the north bay, 52 degrees, 63 in san francisco. blue sky in san jose and high clouds i was telling you about looking at them all day long. again, we comet to see the high and mid level clouds in the bay, see the humidity today like it was yesterday, but it'll feel tropical out there. south bay averaging 86, peninsula at 78, san francisco at 72. north bay and the trivalley,

this is where we see warmer temperatures, 91 in the tri-valley, napa, away from the water, you'll be hot today, even in the east shore, not too bad there, 75, that's really where you want to be. clouds will be out by tomorrow afternoon as humidity decreases. all because the remnants former hurricane marie moves out and skies clear, high pressure builds in so for monday temperatures soar. in fact, we're talking about napa close to 100 degrees by labor day. most comfortable weather it san francisco. 74 today in downtown. sunday, 73. cooler skies clear, and monday, fog in san francisco, but plenty of sun by the afternoon, and that's when the warmest day comes, 76 in san francisco. again, a quick recap of what we look at over the next couple days, temperatures hot today, cooler today, skies clear,

the instructor from the greater good science center in studio with us this morning. hello, and thank you for being here. >> thank you so much for having me. >> you can tell us about this. it's not a traditional class. it's a massive open online course. 82,000 people signed up, and why is there a great interest? >> it's true, over 80,000 people signed up. people are interested in the science of happiness today because we live in a time when what we believe to be the sources of happiness are available to a lot of people, and so maybe it's the right spouse, the right number of children, the status that we get from the job that we always aspire to have, and we find that people who have jobs, either ourselves or the people we know, are not necessarily as happy as they thought they would be. we're looking, like, what is it? what else do we need to do or need to know to figure out how to be happy ourselves? >> interesting you say i think here in the silicon valley, especially, we have a little of the fear of missing out, and you

see those outer symbols of wealth or class that indicate happiness, but the science is not showing that. >> that's right. that's right. we are, unfortunately, organisms that habituate and adapt and situations do not keep us happy for long. they are fun, create enjoyment, but we are not happy for long. what we learned from science is what really, really matters is how good we are at connecting with people, how often we find occasions to be kind, and how well we interact with our meaningful and authentic community. >> in reading the course description online, one of the points you make is being happy is not just good for you physically and emotional, but part of the greater good that contributes to the well being of the people around us. >> that's right. >> we're also very social, and we are sensitive to the kinds of emotions and experiences and expressions of the people around us emit. if i'm, perhaps, a leader in the

organization, and i exude a joyful, optimistic attitude, that's the way the workplace feels, on the contrary, if i'm hostile and domineering, the workplace suffers from that. your happiness offers something to the entire community. >> you mentioned this, we are creatures of habit in the research it says 40% of happiness depends on hats and activities. you're going to teach students how to develop habits. tell us how. >> a big component of the course, we call haeptness practices, activities that have been shown by scientists to change levels of happiness so come of them might be, for instance, taking on a habit of being more graceful. trying to say thank you more often, reflect on how other people's actions really benefit you on a day-to-day basis. it's been show that gratitude or people who are grateful are healthier, are happier, and have more satisfaction in their social relationships. >> that's great.

to continuing coverage of the south napa earthquake, and new images from the morning. look at this video. it was taken by camera at the yard that houses the napa valley wine train. the cars are shaking violently on the track, and watch, transformers exploded in the background, caught on that surveillance camera. the quake forced the popular tourist train to shut down last sunday and monday, but now it's back open. the train's tracks and bridges all passed inspections. plans to celebrate the weekend are underway in napa and started with businesses welcoming holiday travellers. corks flew last night while some rooms have water damage, hotel guests make the most of the stay in san francisco. the staff is sending a bus load of volunteers to help clean up in napa, and over the first united methodist church, a congregation held a barbecue. the church lost brick from the facade and suffered structural

the pilot of the single engine plane landed in a field next to highway 4 in discovery bay. it happened before 6:00 p.m. when the pilot reported end gin problems. fortunately, the plane landed safely, no one was hurt, and the plane is registered to a florida man on its way to the concord airport. officials are on the ground in africa searching for a way to stem the ebola outbreak ravaging the western part of the continue net the spread began last year and became an epidemic spreading to many countries. in a news conference yesterday, the virus has become a crisis in sierra-leone, but it is possible to fight the outbreak. >> there is time to avoid ka tas troe fe, but only if immediate

action is taken at every level. >> according to the world health organization, more than 1500 people have already died from the outbreak with hundreds of new cases being discover each week. an attorney for the actor and comedian tracy morgan sis the former "saturday night live" star is struggling to recover from an automobile accident in june. he relies on a wheelchair and may be months before he's able to walk again. he said that it will be a month before morgan is assessed cogniti cognitively. he was hit by a walmart truck on the new jersey turnpike breaking his nose, leg, and several ribs. morgan is suing walmart for negligence. more news ahead, the giants offense erupts as the a's may have lost more than just a ball game last night in anaheim.

stays with us through the day for tomorrow, and then the skies clear out monday, and we're talking about femmes surmging. in fact, if you think it's hot today and tomorrowing wait until monday because temperatures in the inland valleys are close to 1 00 degrees for places like the tri-valley and north bay. mean while, we have cloud cover from the former hurricane marie, spreading clouds this way, but the thing about it is we won't have organized cloud cover, just high and mid level clouds, you see it right there from the center of low pressure in from central and northern california. closer to home, the radar, we have a little bit shower activity detected across the mountains this morning and down through the corridor of 10 11, morgan hill, and if you travel that way, there may drizzle activity and sprinkles, but that's all we'll get from the activity from the remnants of the former hurricane marie. we have high and mid level

clouds in the bay. because of that, 62 in the south bay, san francisco looking good. fog is clearing, and this is really indicative of what's headed our way today because we're already starting to clear out and see plenty of sun and strong onshore breeze today, and high and mid level clouds with us all day long. not a full-on blue sky, but comfortable. 86 in the south bay today, you'll be at 78 with the added humidity there, comfortable in san francisco with temperatures in the low 70s. tri-valley low 90s, and the hottest is the north bay, the napa wine country, drink water and loose fitting clothing to alleviate the heat trapped closer to the body. more events this weekend, oakland pride festival in downtown oakland tomorrow at 10: 30 with the parade kicking off, temperatures comfortable, fill tiltered sun, and topping out at 76. if you are looking for other things to do, cooler weather, want to get up into the

the bay. a live look out there, beautiful skies, called the most significant attack on our nation's power grid. sometimes labeled an act of terrorism. this morning, controversy from inside the santa clara county sheriff's office surrounding decisions after an incident in san jose. here's the chief investigative reporter. >> this is a serious attack. this was a debacle. compromised from the start. >> reporter: two of the first responders on the attack last april. are you putting career at risk by talking to us? >> absolutely. >> reporter: they asked us to disguise identities and change the voices. they fear retaliation. >> reporter: why are you doing this? >> this is important. >> reporter: it started shortly before 2:00 a.m., a 911 call of shots fired.

the security camera video shows what happened. the flashes of light, bullets from a high powered rifle, exploding through 17 giant transformer, the attack lasted 19 mibs causing more than $15 million in damage. a major incident that could have created a significant blackout in the bay area. >> it was a big deal. the sheriff's office refused to recognize that. until about 8:30 or 9:00 the next morning, we decided to wait until daylight. it's embarrassing. as an embarrassment and disservice to the citizens of the county. >> reporter: frustrations on described as a lack of resources after deputies and the incident commander on scene asked for more help when the shots were conned. >> when we asks our supervisors who tell the administration that we have a problem and the administration decided you really don't have a problem,

administration immediately arranged for additional sheriff's office resources assigned to this accident. >> a letter to a congresswoman about a critical incident filled with truth? >> filled with myth. filled with credit where credit is not due. >> reporter: the letter included over1600 hours of overtime and over 100,000 dollars in overtime expended to investigate the incident. >> we spent $1600 in overtime and $100,000 well after everything is over. what does that mean? it means you sent bodies and spent money because the media got there. >> they are not the only sheriff office employees questioning what happened. nbc bay area had this e-mail written by sergeant gonzalez, the first supervisor on site that morning talking about insufficient staffing on scene and includes it was pretty

demoralizing for my deputies and felt left out to dry that morning. >> do you have a moment? >> reporter: the sheriff declined a request to address concerns raised by the first responders. but recently, he did agree to answer our questions outside the county administration building include including questions on the memo sent by the sergeant. >> he said he asked for additional staffing. it was not granting. >> he has his interpretations how the call should have been handled. i'm not going to second guess that, but i looked over the facts, and i believe that case or call was handled appropriately. >> reporter: the undershall have stands by the accuracy of the letter to the congresswoman. >> did you mislead the congress with this letter? >> no. >> reporter: why would three members of the staff say you've done that? >> i don't know why. >> reporter: although the letter is questioned, they pointed to e-mails from three supervisors involved in the response.
