good morning. happy monday. i'm betty nguyen. developing in the middle east, a dicy truce and it just got dicier. israel goes on a massive land grab, seizing 1,000 acres near bethlehem, the biggest grab in 30 years. the problem, many palestinians live there. reports claim israel's move is in part pay back. in june two jewish teens were kidnapped and killed by hamas in that area. many worry this could hurt peace talks. >> instead of something thenning the palestinian authority, th il is showing its other side. a new staggering stat. it will take 20 years to rebuild gaza following the recent conflict. the price tag, $6 billion. also developing this morning, lawmakers are turning up the heat on president obama to take action against isis militants in syria. this latest call to action comes as u.s. air strikes continue to

target isis in iraq. i'm joined by nbc's tracie potts in washington. what can you tell us about this push for the president to act? >> reporter: the concern, and we heard quite a bit of this over the weekend, betty, the concern is this threat from isis is not going away. some lawmakers fear if the u.s. doesn't act, that threat could get worse. wait is the official word from the white house, but some republicans argue there's no time. >> we can't wait forever. the longer we do wait, the stronger isis becomes. >> reporter: even some democrats worry about waiting too long? >> he's very cautious, maybe in this instance too cautious. >> reporter: president obama says he has no strategy for dealing with isis militants in syria. >> the president of the united states is either in denial or overwhelmed. he's either in denial or overwhelmed, one of the two. >> reporter: the policy, republicans argue, has been to defend iraq but not to engage in

syria. >> that is a decision. that is a policy. that is a strategy and it's not working. >> reporter: democrats fear rushing in too soon with military power could be a big mistake. >> if we simply come in and start bombing isis, we run the risk of forcing sunnis into their camp. we have to have the right targets and the right support in order to be effective. >> reporter: the president wants to build a coalition of allies first. >> we can't be sheriff of the whole world. it's france, the brits, other countries need to work with us including countries like saudi arabia and that region. >> reporter: one big concern, how many americans are fighting with isis and whether they're planning to bring that fight back home. but the president has said don't expect any action, military action from the u.s. before congress gets back to work, betty. >> tracie, thank you so much. it could be the first test of the nfl's tougher rules. san francisco 49er ray mcdonald

has been arrested for domestic violence, accused of beating his pregnant fiancee. it happened during mcdonald's 30th birthday sunday. right now he's off on $25,000 bail. if found guilty, he will sit out six games. it could be more since the alleged victim is pregnant. so keeping our fingers crossed. that is a quote and coming directly from the family of joan rivers. the comedian remains in critical condition at a new york city hospital. reports say doctors hope to have her out of medically induced coma by tuesday. the 81-year-old has been hospitalized since thursday. she stopped breathing during throat surgery at a clinic. in louisiana, a federal judge has temporarily blocked a restrictive new abortion law but the ruling has created ambiguity. the law requires doctors who perform abortions to have admitting privileges within 30 miles of their clinic. the law can still go into effect today but doctors and clinics

cannot be penalized for breaking it until after a hearing on a permanent ruling. advocates say the law could shut down all five abortion clinics in the state. lawyers say the judges ruling is unclear. they're not sure if it applies to doctors at all five abortion clinics or the doctors at the three clinics whose lawsuit challenged the new law. severe storms are putting a damper on labor day plans in the northeast. three new york beachgoers were hospitalized after being struck by lightning while garden state drivers drove through flooded roads. let's get a look at the labor day forecast. hopefully a little sunnier and bright today. >> sunny and bright no matter what. it's your birthday. i have a cake, flowers and presents waiting on your desk. >> give me sunshine. >> you don't even care? >> i development thank you very much. >> i don't. it sounds great. i'll buy your breakfast yesterday was a rough day.

we actually got confirmation of a very weak tornado in worcester, massachusetts late last night. they confirmed damage to some trees there. it didn't hurt anyone or do any property damage. that's great. it was hot as could be yesterday. on top of that, it was humid. it was 96 in d.c. with the due point into the 70s yesterday. it was one of the hottest, steamiest days we've seen east of the mississippi and still very humid. those numbers in the 60s near 70. that's a very humid air mass. we're going to do it again today. it's going to be sunny in a lot of areas. we still have the heat and that much humidity. we will get the afternoon storms. by far the worst storms out there this morning have been rocking and rolling through kansas. now making a run through joplin and springfield. some of the storms have weakened near the quad cities. i think chicago will be okay today. forecastwise, with so much humidity in the air, we will get showers and storms. it's not going to rain out your entire day. for a half hour or hour, a good

so leading the news in "usa today" oil tanker vanishes with $100 million cargo off texas. the kurdish ship was carrying oil when it finished. the coast guard says it may have moved out of antenna range or could have technical problems. in news day, banning russian-made ak-47s sets off a u.s. buying frenzy. the ban was put in place as part of sanctions against russia, but shortly after gun buyers began wiping out inventory across the country. it was a loud, low sound and then silence. that is how witnesses described the single engine plane crash that killed five people yesterday near denver. the ntsb doesn't know if it

happened during take off or landing but are investigating. aftershocks still shaking the ground in california's napa valley. yesterday a 3.2 magnitude quake hit the area. one of several stemming from that 6.0 quake last week. newly released video shows the original event shaking a train on its tracks. the corvette museum in kentucky is seeing record attendance, partly because of the sinkhole that swallowed eight cars back in february. now it's official, they are going to have to fill it in. the owners wanted to keep some of the hole as a tourist attraction. they say the cost outweighed the benefit. so what would it have been like to drive 100 years ago? for starters, you would be driving a steam-powered vehicle. two brothers drove their 113-year-old antique steamed car to the grand canyon. the journey started off from flagstaff, arizona and took three days. a modern day car on that trip only takes two hours.
