like yesterday for quite some time. on shore flow returns inland, and temperatures are going to drop like a rock. and then weevil see a nice -- we'll see a nice stretch of weather. full forecast is just moments away. and traffic rolling like a rock, no, rolling stone, it's moving. 580 busy. we'll show you what's better niez coming up. monday for a lot of people despite being tuesday, september 2nd. a lot of people having that labor day off. hope you enjoyed it. this is "today in the bay." from nbc bay area, this is "today in the bay." and very good tuesday morning to you, thanks so much for joining us, i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm sam brock. we have breaking news to talk to you about this morning coming from danville, crews capped a gas leak there. allowing people in one neighborhood back into their homes. that leak was started by a car that charactered into a home -- crashed into a home. this happened off of interstate

680. "today in the bay's" stephanie chuang is live in the neighborhood and steph, you're now hearing an arrest was made in this crash. >> reporter: that's right, good morning, sam. we do know from danville police that the driver was arrested. but the good news this morning is that people who live in this neighborhood here were allowed back in their homes within the hour after pg&e crews were successful in capping this leak. you can see that, so the crews are still here. what they're doing now is trying to work to get the connection back on for this one home. but, it took about three hours for them to work on this. we're told this happened at 12:40 in the morning, when a car, and audi crashed into the left side of this house. rupturing a one inch gas main that caused this free flowing gas. this leak to happen. we did speak with the homeowner just minutes ago, he described hearing a lot bang and getting woken up in the middle of the night. >> he was awake, he seemed to be

pretty calm. and surprisingly, but, he was very apologetic, but apparently he missed the turn and, you know, my house dead ends to another street. and apparently he missed the turn and it was late at night and he said that he possibly fell asleep. >> reporter: the good news of course is that the man and the other person and dog in that house okay. you heard what the homeowner said the driver told him, but you see in the video that police did give him a field sobriety check and again, we know that he was arrested, but are working to confirm exactly for what. back here live, again crews working to just get the gas back to this house. the gas uneffected for the rest of the neighborhood, and the best news, of course, is that everyone is okay even after what could have been a very dangerous situation here in the danville neighborhood. stephanie chuang, "today in the

bay." >> thank you, stephanie. and we're following more breaking news. this time in san francisco. a man is in kus dhi morning frr -- custody for breaking into the indonesia consulate overnight. bob re dejoins us live with the latest -- redell joins us live. >> reporter: this happened about an hour and a half ago. this is the site of the consulate. you can see the window where this young man broke into again around 3:30 no morning. from what we've gathered from our conversation with police and someone with the consulate, apparently this man might have been high on something. and they're looking at the surveillance footage from the consulate and they say it shows him running into this, the building, breaking a window and ending up on the second floor. the impression they got that was he was paranoid. anyway, he was in a rush to get in the building. ended up on the second floor. didn't take anything and the

alarm system that alerted police to the fact that there was a break-in. they showed up, they did take this man into custody. he seemed to be cooperating with police. he is gone right now, and again the only damage, only thing of significance is the broken window. he didn't go and rob the place. and they're trying to figure out exactly was he being chased by someone or was he just on something and being paranoid and ended up inside? reporting live here in san francisco, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thanks for the latest, bob. 5:04, a boy was injured after being hit by a bullet on his property. >> kris sanchez, what went down? >> reporter: the seven-year-old is recovering at uc davis medical center. he is recover dprg a wound to the chest. the sheriff's investigators say he wasn't shot, but he was injured bay piece of bullet that ricochetted. it all appears to be a terrible accident. spokesman with the el dorado

county sheriff's department says the boy and father were shooting targets at a range they set up on their property. the sheriff spokesman also says that at no time were guns aimed at any person as the seven-year-old and his dad were firing at tarkts about 40 yards away. >> parents were watching, and the boy was using a single shot 22 volt action rifle. dad was right there and all the sudden, the boy complained of pain in his chest. dad looked down, saw a little hole in the t-shirt. >> reporter: the father checked his son and found that he was bleeding from his chest. the father immediately took his son to nearby fire station from which he was air lifted to uc davis medical center. no one noticed any ricochets, but it does appear that's how the boy was injured. he is expected to survive. his condition has not been updated this morning. this comes about a week after that nine-year-old girl in arizona accidentally shot and killed an instructor there. again, bringing up debt bait

over kids and guns. we have specifics coming up in the next half hour. >> looking guard to that, let's hope he's okay. >> thanks. now to continuing coverage of the south napa earthquake, the red cross will be back out in napa this morning offering help to those affected by that earthquake. hundreds showed up at the red cross service delivery center in napa yesterday looking for financial help or for clothing and temporary housing. others wanted to talk about the quake and what they had to experience. the site will be open daily from 10:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the napa valley marriott hotel. open and ready for the morning commute. late last night, caltrans crews wrapped up seismic retrofitting work on northbound 280 between the 101 interchange and the king street exit in san francisco. finished just before 10:00 last night, that's seven hours ahead of schedule. crews replaced two bridge hinges as part of a seismic upgrade. magical transition there, mike, as we saw hectic nature

there on 280, now it looks good for a look at the rest of the commute, let's check in with mike inouye. >> it is magic how they got that roadway and made it all refixed, took more than that. closed it on 2:00 thursday and reopened last night at 9:40. as sam said, traffic is moving nicely right now and great difference for this morning's commute where on thursday and friday evenings and mornings, we saw big backups. all the way into the city. this morning, not as extensive of backup. it'll still be crowd up into san francisco. we'll take you tout south bay where a more urgets issue is going on right here. the traffic flow light. look at northbound 87 right around alma, reports of a fire and it's going to quarter acre from what we understand. now there are train tracks as well as a few apartment buildings. we're concerned for the folks in the area. no delays reported for caltrans yet. no reports of lanes closed, but we have a camera pointed in the area, i want to see if we can

see anything going on with the fire. there's a glow right here. now this is being shot from the our camera at 280 and 17th, it's quite a distance away. you see traffic flowing again, we'll let you know, but this is right up on the freeway. 87 itself, northbound may experience delays from smoke even. we'll track that. meanwhile at the bay bridge, the backup is gone. cash lanes have all opened. now they're ready without any delays of the east bay. over to you guys. >> i'll take it. >> right over to christina. hey, good morning to you, traffic tuesday, and that's a good look so far. 60 degrees in san francisco. 61 in san carlos, and 62 degrees to kick off the day in beautiful san jose. so yesterday was hot, you may have had a little difficulty getting to sleep last night, but the good news is, the fog has returned. and yeah, it's going to make for a really comfortable day. temperatures dropping by about ten degrees from yesterday's highs in most cases. i want to show you a live look

here, san jose, we're still mostly clear at this point in the south bay, but that's all going to change throughout the day today. cool with widespread clouds at about 7:00 a.m., mostly cloudy as you head throughout your afternoon though, back to average. the clouds will take a while to burn off, kind of stubborn at the immediate coast for today. between about noon and 3:00 p.m., you'll get enough sunshine. take it out far couple hours if that's what you're looking for. pleasant temperatures as we get into this evening, 7:26 is your -- 7:36 is your sun set as we get closer to the official start of fall. hard to believe we're already in september. temperatures like will make it feel like september. 72 degrees on the east shore. 66 in san francisco. and 79 degrees today on the peninsula. so, we have a little bit of a change to tell you about. chance for some showers as we get into the week. talk about that coming up, right now back to you sam and laura. tv snacking, do you eat a little? >> do i eat a little?

and san jose city college, and last but certainly not least, my alma mater, st. mary's starts classes today. study hard, make me proud. new this morning, police in the nashville area are on the lookout for a dozen teens who escaped from a youth detention center. 32 teens escaped from the woodland youth development center late last night when they crawled under a weak spot in the fence that surrounded the yard. about half were caught overnight, but 17 still on the run. all of the teens have committed at least three felonies. staffing at the detention center is light during the overnight hours. no word yet if the escape was planned or spontaneous. detroit's historic chapter ix bankruptcy will be moving forward today with a courtroom show down over the city's plan to get out of bankruptcy. now the city plans on telling a bankruptcy judge it wants to pay pensioners more than a financial institutions it owes money to. also would like to preserve the institute of arts and cut more than $7 billion in debt.

detroit leaders must prove to the judge that this plan to reinvent to 1.4 billion over the next ten years is fair and equitable. more than 80 people are expected to testify in the courtroom trial that could last through the middle of next month. meantime, nals detroit, hearing is set to take place today over the right to water service. the people's water board coalition is asking a judge to issue a restraining order against the city for months detroit has dealt with past due water bills for both residents and businesses by cutting off their water supply. the stoppage of service created problems and unsanitary conditions in many parts of that city. the fbi is now involved in the investigation into the theft of hundreds of nude or risque pictures of celebrities from apple's icloud service. scott mcgrew joins us now. some of the dlebties didn't know they were using icloud. >> laura, lots of people don't. pictures that you take, you think that are only on your phone are often uploaded for

your convenience to apple's photo stream. taken right off your phone and you may not even realize it. in some cases, they were pictures, those celebrities thought they had deleted, gu again if you don't realize they're being sent to a backup service, deleting them off your phone may not make a difference. the idea that nobody understands thousand works was the gag behind that summer move "sex tape," the movie they made is sent to the cloud and eventually everyone they know. so that was the celebrity's number one mistake, putting intimate pictures up in cyber space. the second problems is a security issue. chief among was this was find my iphone feature, you can try pass words over and over until you connected. apple fix the the flaw this morning but allowed bad guys to access your apple accounts. there is a defense, called two factor authentication. if you turn that on, nobody can

mess with your apple accounts without knowing a special one time code sent to your iphone that you absolutely ought to be using. meanwhile, for a quick look at the markets, let's talk to jackie deangelis, good morning, jackie. >> good morning to you, scott. well the future's pointing to a higher open on wall street. the markets coming back from a long weekend. on friday, the s&p 500 index closing at a record high for the 32nd time this year. the s&p had its best august in 14 years while the nasdaq had its best since 2012 and the dow since 2009. data today on manufacturing and construction spending. that'll move the markets around. closing up 18 points on friday, 17,098, nasdaq up 22. meantime, gm is reportedly set to launch cars that can pick up on distracted driving. the automaker will use technology to track eye and head movement to alert you if you're not paying enough attention to the road ahead or watching

livermore, and we have a full deck of low clouds all the way oemp the san francisco bay this morning. although we are still waking up, mostly clear at this the point, down in the south bay as we head throughout the day though, this onshore flow will strengthen and the low clouds will come over the santa clara valley. keeping us really nice and comfortable for the second half of the day. low clouds burning off in the south bay about 10:00 a.m. you'll very many to wait until lunchtime. fog and stun 66 degrees today. we'll hit about 83 degrees here in the south bay becoming sunny flout the day today. along the east shore, room temperature today with a nice cool breeze. really increasing by this evening. that comfortable breeze will intensify, that means you can open up the windows in your home even out in the tri-valley, get that westerly wind. as we head deeper into the week, changes to tell you about as we head throughout tomorrow in particular, we're going to cool you off, bring in a thicker cloud cover to start the day,

and as a result of those clouds thickening up each morning all the way through friday. we're going get a better chance for drizzle. area of low pressure just offshore as we head throughout your friday. so it all works like this temperature wise, we're out of the 90s and even close in the triple digits. at least for the next seven days. temperatures stay comfortable, low 80s for us here in the south bay, all week long, we hit that sweet stride on friday, the coolest of the day week, that is the one and only chance of really tracking for the measurable drizzle and over the morning hours. as we head throughout the week at san francisco, just beautiful weather as you know, fall is just around the corner. the 22nd of this month, and things are going to change quickly. we should be getting our first shower statistically speaking before september is through. let's check your drive, here's mike inouye. also cooling things down a little bit over here in san jose. we had that fire burning, now we see flashing lights, but the glow has gone down from what we hear, they're mopping up the fiertd right now, this is 87, you see that, there are flashing lights over there. let's show you where this is.

of an emergency. save the children, almost half of the states in this country are not ready to deep families together or reunite them if and when a disaster strikes. the group that promotes children's rights evaluated states based on guidelines created after hurricane katrina. among the issues examined here, the krietd tier ya for states evacuation and relocation plans, including how the state planned to reunite children separated from their families. plans for evacuating children in child care, plans to help children living with disabilities, and the multiple disaster plans in place at k-12 schools. now california is one of the states that meets save the children standards in all four of those criteria. new study out this morning finds breast-feeding can affect your baby all the way through first grade. according toing a series of new studies published by the american academy of pediatrics, the benefits of breast-feeding last until, at least age six. studies found babies who breast-fed exclusively for at least six months were less

likely to suffer from ear, throat, and sinus infections at six years old. breast-feeding appeared to protect against food allergies. what mom's ate while breast-feeding affected their children later in life. >> a lot of the taste preferences that children develop during the first year, a lot of eating habits may be more important than we first thought. >> six-year-olds breast-fed as infants drank fewer sugary beverages and ate more fruits and vegetables. eating in front of the tv has been link told overeating and obesity, now researchers are discovering what you watch askts how much you eat. >> bizarre. here's how to works, monitoring a small group of college students, researchers had them view an action movie, talk show, or action movie while no sound while snacking. the people watching the action movie ate almost twice as many as though watching the talk show. those watching a silent movie ate one-third more than talk

passenger. the fight started when a woman started to recline her seat and the woman behind her got upset. >> the woman sitting next to me knitting just reclining her seat back. the woman behind her started screaming and swearing. and then flight attendant came over haen that just exacerbated what was going on. and then she demanded that the flight land. she starting swearing at the flight attendants and demanding that the flight land. the flight attendants spoke with the captain while somebody was blocking her path to the cabin. and then few minutes later, announcement came on that we were diverting to jacksonville. >> wow, all that because of a seat. out passenger was escorted by police. the rest of the passengers made it to palm beach safely. >> that can be irritating when someone pulls their seat back, but not to that level. the dutch artist created a

crashing into a home and causing a gas leak. it happened early this morning on midland way just off of interstate 680. "today in the bay's" stephanie chuang live in the neighborhood, and steph, the neighborhood was evacuated, but everything's okay now? >> reporter: it is. and that's the good news this morning. good morning to you, laura. residents back in their homes this morning. but firefighters and police left about half our ago. pg&e crews are still here. the crash happened where you see one worker, but they actually had to work at the front of the house, about three hours it took them to actually cap the gas leak, and that happened around 4:00 this morning, and that's when people were allowed back into their homes. now you can see in the video, where the car, the audi crashed early this morning around 12:40 to the left the house hitting a gas main and causing a leak. frmpts called on scene, immediately cleared and the ignition sources and evacuated six homes, that's 15 people who were let back in more than three hours later. we spoke with the homeowner who

says he was woken up in the middle of the night by a loud bang. >> and i jumped out of bed and ran to the, through the backyard to the side of my house. and there was a car that was smashed into the side of my garage. and all i heard was gas spewing out of the meter. >> reporter: as he says the driver was conscious and able to get out of the car safely. danville police, as you can see in the video did give the driver a field sobriety test and eventually arrested him. the car was towed about an hour ago, away from the scene. and pg&e crews again now still working, what they're doing now is trying to connect the gas back to this specific house. every other houses in the neighborhood is just fine. pg&e crews could be here for another couple of hours. very chaotic moments as the homeowner tried to get the driver to safety.

live in danville, stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." >> thanks, stephanie. we're following more breaking news this morning, man right now under arrest after breaking into the indonesian consulate just hours ago. "today in the bay's" bob redell joins us live from san francisco, and bob, we know behind you there's a busted window. do we know what kind of state this man was in when he broke into the building? >> reporter: from what we've gathered, sam, from police and the consulate, it sounds like this man might have been high on something, paranoid, and was being chased, or at least felt like he was being chased. around 3:30 he ran to this location here on columbus, he hopped this fence and you can see he broke that front window npds made entry. surveillance footage shows him racing up to the second floor the way that the consulate described to me, he was trying to get away from something. the security alarm alerted they arrived. they took this young man into custody. he seems to be cooperating with

police. we saw him on the back of the car, he seemed calm, consulate telling us nothing was taken, the only damage is this window out front. they're trying to get a better idea of why this man broke into the consulate here. the thought being that maybe he was high on drugs. bob redell, "today in the bay." >> bob, thank you very much. it's 5:34, once popular surf instructor accused of lewd acts with two minors could spend the rest of his life in prison. this morning in santa cruz, sant superior court dylan grinor is expected to plead guilty to dozens of charges. those include child molestation and possession of child pornography. he is also accused of secretly taping girls changing in the dressing room of his surf school. santa cruz police say he wrote a letter apologizing to victims and the community after his arrest one year ago. police are now investigating a deadly crash involving an amtrak train in oakland. now we're told nobody was on

board the train that was hurt when it slammed into an suv. the driver however inside was killed. this crash happened just after 10:00 last night neither intersection of san leandro and high street not far from the bart station. still unclear at this point what the suv was doing on the tracks in the first place. strask flowing again on northbound 280 just in time for your commute. the roadway was closed on thursday for seismic upgrades. caltrans crews finished the work late last night, seven hours thankfully ahead of schedule. santa clara county listen host workshops on its new system for south bay restaurants. the new system came in part due to our recent investigative reports, local rauntds not keeping their health records readily available. starting october 1st, restaurant owners will now vu to post plaque kartds showing a color code score. green is passing, yell slow conditional, and red is failing. faed's workshop will be -- today's workshop will be held in

cupertino this afternoon at 2:00. san mateo county officials will be spraying for mosquitos after some were found infected with the west nile virus last week. parts of redwood city and menlo park are set to be fogged this evening. the area is mostly industrial and bordered by kenfield avenue in redwood city and eversnon menlo park. it'll take place between 9:00 tonight and 5:00 tomorrow morning. can feel a little sense of fall in the air, can't you? >> yeah, more fall i guess, we know it's coming and hopefully less humidity as we go forward. >> yeah, its been sticky out there. and yeah, we are already starting to see some of those leaves fall off the trees, it has everything to do with the amount of daylight and not temperature some people tend to mix up. 62 degrees in oakland. 62 in san jose, and 59 degrees in san martin. as the days get shorter, our temperatures cool off and for today, we are going to see a really nice day. dropping those numbers by about

to see if they have any adverse affects. if deemed safe, the trial will exfoond larger group to see if it produces a strong immune response to the virus. the vaccine showed promise in animal trials. it was supposed to start later this fall but it is being fast tracked because of the overwhelming concern in west africa. seven-year-old boy from northern california recovering this morning after getting hurt at his family's backyard shooting range. kris sanchez joins us from the newsroom with the latest on the boy's condition and how did all this happen? >> reporter: to be clear, the el dorado county sheriff's investigators say he wasn't shot, but injured bay piece of bullet that ricochetted. it appears to be a terrible accident according to that spokesperson for the el dorado county sheriff's department. he said that the boy and his father was shooting at targets at a range they set up on their rural property. the spokesman says at no time were they ever aimed at any person as the seven-year-old and his dad fired at shots at

targets about 40 yards away. >> parents were watching, and the boy was using a little single shot 22 bolt action rifle. dad was right there and all the sudden, the boy complained a pain in his chest. dad looked down, hole in the t-shirt. >> reporter: according to the el ra doe county sheriff's office, the father found that the son was bleeding from his chest. he immediately took him toe a nearby fire station from which he was air lifted to uc davis medical center where he remains this morning. investigators say that no one noticed any ricochets at the time of the incident that the it appears that is what happened. the boy is expected to survive, though his condition has not been updated this morning. statistics for you, 45 children have been accidentally shot to death this year according to the center to prevent gun violation, they were shot, shooting ranges are generally considered it safe
