police in hayward are investigating a heinous crime there. elderly man beaten and left in a park. this all happened on sunday night at the kennedy park near the boulevard, "today in the bay's" kris sanchez joins us live in hayward where police, kris are asking for help to find the person who committed this crime. >> reporter: right, they're trying to help people jog their memories, giving more detail because this is really a shocking crime. elderly man deliberately hit and left there without any stance until his also elderly wife came and found him. here's where it happened around 2:45 on sunday afternoon here at kennedy park. it was near the pavilion picnic area. police say it was there that a group of ten to 20 people were gathered at what may have been a birthday party. hayward says the victim, 70-year-old elderly man entering the area looking for can and other recyclables when a woman approached him and had a conversation with him. it was after that point, that a man also came up to him and
5:02 am
punched hip in the head with enough force that the man fell to the ground, lost consciousness, and has not returned to consciousness since then. police say that to make matters worse, the party there continued, 10 to 20 people continued to have their party while the man needed help. the suspect appears to have gotten away. now, here are the details that hayward police want you to know. the suspect is described as an african american man, about 6'0", weighing somewhere between 180 and 200 pounds. now after punching that elderly man, hayward police say he left in a beige car. that 70-year-old victim remains in the hospital. he has not regained consciousness. so hayward police say they do have one witness, they'd like to have more, they would like to give this man's family peace and find out what precipitated the whole thing. kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> thank you, kris.
5:03 am
it is 6:02, also new this morning, police have arrested a man they say robbed a store in san mateo and pushed around an employee with a gun. the robbery and arrest happened on wednesday, but police just released information about it. they say 23-year-old ta harry turner walked into a store on gum street in san mateo, pulled out a gun and demanded merchandise. then turner forced an employee into a storage room and stole cell phones from the store. police arrested turner later that day and reportedly found the cell phones in his car. fire crews are still outside in a building, outside a building in san francisco's mission district this morning. more than 12 hours after flames were first spotted there. that fire at the building of the intersection of mission and 23rd street sent black smoke pouring all over the city, and it took crews hours to handle it. now investigators are trying to figure out if it is safe enough to go inside the building and find out what caused that fire.
5:04 am
stephanie chuang joins under the circumstances live from san francisco, and stephanie, we understand firefighters still need to be vigilant this morning, hot spots, are they still a concern? >> reporter: absolutely. good morning, sam. definitely concern that any flare-ups could reignite everything behind me and that's why there are five fire crews on scene. the store had plastics and flammables as merchandise with luggage and plastic bags, clothes, there's a crew in the back, but there's also debris. two crews on the rooftops on either side where you see one set up here to the right, and also, two crews on the ground where they've got nozzles, in fact, overnight they've had to put out a couple of hot spots earlier this morning. took firefighters a couple of hours to get a handle on the five alarm blaze, that started around 1:00 yesterday afternoon with thick smoke pouring through the streets. one of the biggest challenges was keeping the fire from spreading, a brick wall between the buildings did help. now firefighters say people who were around sheltered in place and allowed firefighters to
5:05 am
focus on putting the fire out. >> that is amazing, the time of day did help, the people that wered in were able to get out right away. and we didn't have a concern then of life. it was just the property we were trying to protect. >> reporter: two firefighters and two neighbors went to the hospital after suffering smoke inhalation, but no life threatening injuries reported. chief joanne hayes white says the department doesn't inspect these buildings unless there's a complaint. there were two filed for this building. once in 2009 when the own her to widen an aisleway, and one last year when a citation was given for an issue that was called reasonable life safety. so back here live, you're looking at the second floor, there are two holes there. a lot of the merchandise that ended up on the ground fell from the second floor where items were stored. so, not all the debris you see here was on the first floor. investigators may not be able to
5:06 am
get back inside, engineers will be out here this morning to derp the integrity of this structure. meantime, the streets here between 23rd and 24th on mission will be closed for many hours, only muni allowed through. coming up in a half hour, ma what neighbors had to say about the history of this store. live in san francisco, stephanie chuang, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much, stephanie. it is 5:06, bay area lawmaker is hoping to use money from a landmark fight against pg&e to make sure future disasters like the san bruno explosion do not happen again. the earmark the majority of $1.4 million for pipeline improvements and safety measures. his bill would also prevent p gerks ge from passing the cost related to pipeline modernization on to customers. the bill would create an independent monitor to oversee pg&e and fund the trust for california. 2010 explosion destroyed san

5:34 am
that's because the roof could kblaps and the second floor also gave away to some of the merchandise on the ground you see had fallen from the storage area. there's still a concern a flare-up could reignite the fuels. crews have in fact put out a couple of hot spots overnight. now the five alarm fire started around 1:00 yesterday afternoon with thick black smoke pouring through the streets because of all the burning plastic. one of the biggest challenges and successes for fire crews was keeping the fire from spreading. brick walls between the buildings did help them. two firefighters and two residents went to the hospital after suffering smoke inhalation, but no life threatening injuries reported. now one neighbor tells us she's been worried about this store for years. >> i stopped going in there because it's a hazard waiting to happen. someone's going to get killed in there. there's a store you can't walk down a walker or stroller, then they shouldn't have a license. >> reporter: fire chief says the department doesn't usually

5:38 am
they'll be singing the delta breeze praises throughout in the sacramento valley today because this is going to help to keep them nice and cool. now we have a lot of fog that you might be wondering why don't i see it from the shot of the golden gate bridge. well that marine layer is about 2,000 feet this morning. the golden gate bridge is 746 feet, also the tallest skyscraper in all of san francisco, the transamerica pyramid, that's just over 1,000 feet, and so that cloud bank is even situated above that this morning. above the oakland hills, which are elevated at 1500 feet, and yeah, the only place you're going to be above the fog, mt. diablo in mt. hamilton where you're above 3800 feet. we're going keep tabs on this. overall, fog burning off by 10:00 a.m. for the bay area and comfortable temperatures for today. weekend looks good too. we'll talk about that coming up, first here's mike inouye. it is friday morning, we expect the lighter volume. we have the backup building
5:39 am
toward the end of the parking lot. but no drama here. look at your maps, we're talking about getting into the city via the bay bridge. so does the north bay, there's that fire, the second one sam told you about. likely traffic control in the area, but not a big deal for your morning commute. lower drive develops for the dublin interchange. the disabled big rig blocks towards the slow end, greenville, bigger issue. we'll end with a quick shot, easy drive for the south bay, we'll be back right after this quick message.
